STANLEY, HENRY M] ANONYMOUS.
London: Seeley & Co., n.d [ca. 1880]. Henry M. Stanley’s own copy; bound into sixteen separate sections, each bound and stitched into plain brown wrappers with paper labels on the front covers with the dates covered within noted in ink. Each wrapper has an inked letter at the bottom corner identifying its place in the order. Stanley himself signed the collection at top of the first page of text, and, for the most part, the 185 worthies signed in the months of their births, some noting the year they were born, some noting the date of their contribution, and some doing neither. Generally in very good condition; a small number of pages are detached or nearly so; one signature (not included in our count) is blotted out; in a worn cloth clamshell box with the bookplate of Carroll Wilson and the clipped entry for the item from a 1950 Scribner’s catalogue, apparently the most recent occasion on which this collection appeared on the open market. Stanley was a reporter, explorer and politician. The term “adventurer” might as well have been coined to describe his life. Stanley was a name the illegitimately born young man John Rowlands took on shortly after his arrival in America, where, perhaps uniquely, he served in the Confederate Army, as well as in the US Army and Navy. He became a highly successful reporter and African explorer, returning to Britain where he entered politics and was eventually knighted. One can only speculate on why he chose to break the cloth bound Birthday-Book into this format, but this cataloguer suggests that it was done so that, when going to a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOEHRINGER, C.
Athen, ca. 1880. Original photograph, cabinetcard, albumen print, 16,4 x 10,6 cm. Olga Constantinovna of Russia, later Queen Olga of Greece, (3 September [O.S. 22 August] 1851 - 18 June 1926) was Queen of the Hellenes as the wife of King George I and, briefly in 1920, regent of Greece. A member of the Romanov dynasty, she was the daughter of Grand Duke Constantine Nikolaievich and his wife, Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg. She spent her childhood in Saint Petersburg, Poland and the Crimea, and married King George I of Greece in 1867 at the age of sixteen. At first, she felt ill at ease in the Kingdom of Greece, but she quickly became involved in social and charitable work. She founded hospitals and help centers, but her attempt to promote a new, more accessible, Greek translation of the Gospels sparked riots by religious conservatives. On the assassination of her husband in 1913, Olga returned to Russia. When the First World War broke out, she set up a military hospital in Pavlovsk Palace, which belonged to her brother. She was trapped in the palace after the Russian Revolution of 1917, until the Danish embassy intervened, allowing her to escape to Switzerland. Olga could not return to Greece as her son, King Constantine I, had been deposed. In October 1920, she returned to Athens on the fatal illness of her grandson, King Alexander. After his death, she was appointed regent until the restoration of Constantine I the following month. After the defeat of the Greeks in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-22 the Greek royal family were again exiled and Olga spent the last years … [Click Below for Full Description]

GEORGE I of GREECE.
ca. 1880. Original photograph, cabinetcard, albumen print, 16,4 x 10,6 cm. Photograph no 1204. George I (born Prince William of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg; 24 December 1845 - 18 March 1913[1]) was King of Greece from 1863 until his assassination in 1913. Originally a Danish prince, George was born in Copenhagen, and seemed destined for a career in the Royal Danish Navy. He was only 17 years old when he was elected king by the Greek National Assembly, which had deposed the unpopular former king Otto. His nomination was both suggested and supported by the Great Powers: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Second French Empire and the Russian Empire. He married the Russian grand duchess Olga Constantinovna of Russia, and became the first monarch of a new Greek dynasty. Two of his sisters, Alexandra and Dagmar, married into the British and Russian royal families. King Edward VII and Tsar Alexander III were his brothers-in-law and King George V and Tsar Nicholas II were his nephews. George's reign of almost 50 years (the longest in modern Greek history) was characterized by territorial gains as Greece established its place in pre-World War I Europe. Britain ceded the Ionian Islands peacefully, while Thessaly was annexed from the Ottoman Empire after the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). Greece was not always successful in its territorial ambitions; it was defeated in the Greco-Turkish War (1897). During the First Balkan War, after Greek troops had captured much of Greek Macedonia, George was assassinated in Thessaloniki. Compared to his own long tenure … [Click Below for Full Description]

UJFALVY-BOURDON, Marie de.
Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie,, 1880. Le Ferghanah, Le Kouldja, et la Sibérie Occidentale. Impressions de Voyage d'une Parisienne. Folio. Publisher's de luxe binding, signed Charles Magnier at the tail of the spine, red hard-grained morocco, matching red cloth boards, title gilt to spine with ornate Islamic-style panels, boards similarly elaborately blocked in black and gold, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece and numerous other engraved illustrations, many full-page, 4 full-page maps, one in colour. A little chafed on the cords, and at the head and tail of the spine, corners a little bumped, some foxing as usual, remains very good. First edition. Marie Ujfalvy-Bourdon was the French-born wife of the Hungarian ethnographer and linguist Károly Jeno Ujfalvy, professor of Central Asian Geography and History at the École des langues orientales vivantes in Paris, and in 1876 she accompanied him on his expedition, which was sponsored by the Ministère d'Instruction publique et des beaux arts, through Central Asia, producing on her own behalf this handsome, and well-illustrated popular account. Their route took them through most of the former khanates of Central Asia, just recently absorbed into Russian Turkistan - Tashkent, Samarkand, Ferghana, Kokand, and Kuldja - before visiting Omsk in Siberia and returning to Moscow via the Urals. The superb binding was designed and executed by Charles Magnier who became renowned for his edition bindings at this high point for French book production.

BROGI, Giacomo.
Firenze, ca. 1880. Original photograph, cabinetcard, silverprint, 16,5 x 10,8 cm. Natalija Obrenovic (15 May 1859 - 8 May 1941), née Keschk, known as Natalie of Serbia, was the Princess consort of Serbia from 1875 to 1882 and then Queen consort of Serbia from 1882 to 1889, as the wife of Milan I of Serbia. Of ethnic Romanian origin, she was the daughter of Russian colonel Petre Kesco and Romanian noblewoman Pulcheria Sturdza. A celebrated beauty during her youth, she was later regarded as one of the most beautiful queens in Europe. She was born in 1859 in Florence, Grand Duchy of Tuscany (now Italy), as the first child of Russian colonel Petre Kesco (1830-1865) of Bessarabia, and Moldavian Princess Pulcheria Sturdza (1831-1874). Her father was the son of Ioan Kesco, a Marshal of Nobility of Bessarabia, and Romanian noblewoman Natalia Bal?. Natalie grew up in Danuteni, Bessarabia and Iasi, United Romania. After she became orphaned by both parents, she was taken into the care by her maternal aunt, Ecaterina Moruzi. She married her second cousin, Prince Milan Obrenovic IV of Serbia on 17 October 1875. A delegation from Romania, which included members of the Romanian noble families Moruzi and Catargi (to whom Natalia was related), attended her wedding ceremony.[8] She had two sons with him, the future king Alexander, born 1876, whose godfather was Tsar Alexander II of Russia, and his younger brother Sergei (Sergej), who died just a few days after his birth in 1878. When Prince Milan proclaimed the Kingdom of Serbia in 1882 after securing international recognition, Princess Nata … [Click Below for Full Description]

A monument to a few generations of bibliophilic taste and practice now dampened by the passage of time and the disinclination to dismember other books to produce plump, Grangerized laps-full of text and illustration.
