1880. 68 pg journal filled with poetry and watercolors of flora. There are a total of 25 poems in the journal, as some cover multiple pages, however this is a watercolor piece on every page depicting various flowers. At times one can see the pencil the artist used to sketch the flowers before using paint. The poems are reinterpretations of old stories, for example "What the Old Man Does is Always Right" by Hans Christian Anderson. On the front inside cover, it album has been self -titled, "Monty, Getty, with the Author's Love." The artist has number each page themselves and created an index at the back of the book listing each poem and its corresponding page. Some of the poems included are "The Tame Seagull", "The End of Two Black Beetles", and "The Story of a Greedy Crow". 9" x 7 1/2"

- Oeuvre d'ANTIGNA E.P. Trollope, Anthony
London: Chapman and Hall, 1880. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes in the original cloth. This book was never reprinted in its original triple decker form (Sadleir). It is the last book of Trollope's wonderful Palliser series. The six books of the series follow the lives of Plantagenet Palliser, later the Duke of Omnium, and his wife, Lady Glencora. She is one of Trollope's most memorable characters, full of life and personality. The book is bound in dark blue-green cloth with block design on front cover, and spine with gilt title, author, and publisher. The bindings are in very good condition with some bumping to boards and spine edges. The interior pages are quite clean with the usual aging to the page margins. In Volume I the rear hinge is cracked, although the binding is otherwise tight. There is a diagonal tear across the top right of the first page of each volume, with a few words from the first four lines of the recto missing. Volumes II and III are tender but holding tight. Very nice except for the odd tears to the first page of each book. Volume I: 320 pages; Volume II: 327 pages; Volume III: 312 pages. This set may require an extra shipping fee. LIT/010913. Very Good. Wilson, John Albert
Thompson & West, 1880. First Edition. Hardcover. As an architectural depiction of early Los Angeles County, along with Wilson's comprehensive description of the county's townships, this book has no equal. It has come to be known ever since as simply the Thompson & West. J. Gregg Layne in his Books of the Los Angeles District, describes it as "one of the rarest of that fine early series of California county histories [...] complied from the newspapers of the county from 1854 to 1880, as well as city and county records, and from interviews with many early pioneers." Among the estates and residences depicted is a veritable who's who of notable Angelenos, including those belonging to Mrs. Phineas Banning, Don Manuel Dominguez, J.E. Hollenbeck, H.M. Newhall, John Rowland, and W.H. Workman. Includes a full-page colored rendition of H.H. Lloyd and Co's map of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona and 86 lithographed plates, including two two-panel. 11" x 15"; 192 pp. Original dark brown cloth binding over the original black sheep spine, with gilt titles and decorative blindstamping. Small tears to the extremities of a few pages, with a smudge to the border of the map and the opposing leaf. Ink presentation inscription to the Ebell of Los Angeles from Katherine S. Parker, a longtime member, on the Table of Contents leaf. A short tear to the fore-edge of that leaf has been neatly mended. Two additional mends have been made to the verso of the title page. A pair of unobtrusive Ebell ink stamps appear on the front pastedown. The leather has been archivally refurbished. Light fading al … [Click Below for Full Description]

Friedrich Nietzsche
1880. Der Wanderer und Sein Schatten (The Wanderer and His Shadow) Friedrich Nietzsche Chemnitz, 1880 First Edition, First Issue in Original Wraps. UNCUT and complete! Wrapper edges and spine darkened. Upper spine and front corner through the first few pages chipped. Old seller pencil notes on rear wrapper and title page. Interior pages brightly beautiful. Very Good. A spectacular copy of one of Nietzsche's scarcest titles and the last installment in the Human All Too Human trilogy. Printed in an edition of 1000 copies, of which "Only 192 copies of this book were sold in this first edition, first issue state before the remainders were sold to E.W. Fritsch of Leipzig in 1886 - and then reissued with a new title page."(Schaberg) All of Nietzsche's works in original, unrestored wraps are of utmost rarity. And to add even more gravitas, this copy is hand-marked by the publisher on the front cover corner for special presentation to Nietzsche's closest associates: "Gratis im Auftrage des Verfassers" [Free on behalf of the author] 'Nietzsche remained respected in his professorial position in Basel, but his deteriorating health, which led to migraine headaches, eyesight problems and vomiting, necessitated his resignation from the university in June, 1879, at age 34. At this point, he had been a university professor for ten years, and had just less than another ten years of productive intellectual life remaining. From 1880 until his collapse in January 1889, Nietzsche led a wandering, gypsy-like existence as a stateless person (having given up his German citizenship, and not having … [Click Below for Full Description]

Among them are photos of the "colored" Normal school, the building in which Jefferson Davis was imprisoned, the U.S.S. Maine and the U.S.S. Columbia. The album has held up very nicely in its dark-blue, ribbon-tied card wrappers, with circular exterior-shot of Fortress Monroe affixed to the front panel. [Click Below for Full Description]
