[Click Below for Full Description]

Bundy, J M [James A Garfield]
New York: A.S. Barnes & Co, 1880. First edition of Bundy's illustrated biography of the 20th President of the United States. Octavo, original illustrated cloth, illustrated with engravings including tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Garfield, rebacked. Presentation copy, inscribed by Garfield on the front free endpaper, "Compliments of J.A. Garfield, Mentor, Dec. 2, 1880." Garfield inscribed the present volume precisely one month prior to winning the 1880 Presidential election on November 2nd. This win marked the sixth consecutive victory in the presidential election for the Republican Party, its longest winning streak in American history. In very good condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. This work was published prior to the now commonplace practice of presidential biographies and autobiographies. Exceptionally rare and desirable signed by Garfield. James A. Garfield was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination six and a half months later. He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting House member to gain the White House. On July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington D.C. by Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed and delusional office seeker.

Charles Van Benthuysen & Sons, 1880. [NAMIBIA - AFRICA].
Ad 1: Official publication, presented to the British Houses of Parliament, containing correspondence concerning the German settlement at Angra Pequena or Lüderitz, Namibia. The correspondence starts with four letters written in 1880, the first letter including a translation of a German article expressing the German interest in the region. The following letters and telegrams were written in 1883 and 1884, starting with letters from July 1883, asking whether the rumours that a German trading company has bought Angra Pequena harbour are true. The land had indeed been bought by Adolf Lüderitz (1834-1886), who founded a trading post at Angra Pequena and renamed it Lüderitz. The majority of the following letters discuss the British attitude towards Germany and the new settlement, including evidence of British claim and authority in the area and orders to send gunboats to the bay. The folding map shows a large part of Namibia's coast line.Ad 2: Official publication, presented to the British Houses of Parliament, containing a letter by the Earl of Derby, Colonial Secretary, concerning Lüderitz, with four appendices, including letters and statements from 1867 and 1868. It becomes clear that Britain doesn't have a solid claim on the territory.Ad 3: Official publication, presented to the British Houses of Parliament, containing further correspondence concerning Lüderitz from July to November 1884. Some letters deal with the official statement of the German government to treat Lüderitz as a German protectorate: German South West Africa; others with the exact boundaries of the territori … [Click Below for Full Description]

1880. Helena, MT. Very good. Small collection of original photographs of The Kessler Brewing Company of Helena, Montana. Although undated, all the images were captured in the late 19th century, likely during the 1880s. Located on Helena's far west side, The Kessler Brewing Company was originally founded by Charles Breeher as the Ten Mile Brewery in 1865. Nick Kessler, a Luxembourg-born entrepreneur who turned from gold prospecting to trade and manufacturing, bought out Breeher in 1868 for 345 ounces of gold dust and some additional gold coin. Among Helena's first industries, the brewery was enlarged between 1868 and 1874 and with the installation of the first carbonic ice machine west of the Mississippi, it emerged as one of the most modern brewing establishments in the northwest. At its height, it brewed over 200 barrels and produced more than 24,000 bottles a day. Kessler survived two World Wars, Prohibition, and a pair of devastating 1935 earthquakes before ceasing production in 1957. Each of the five photographs is mounted on period mat board. They include: An image (7 ½” x 4 ½”) of Kessler employees, many with pints in hands, posing alongside wooden kegs outside the brewery, circa 1880. The imprint of Helena, Montana photographer Arthur Canning appears on the verso of the mount. Another period example of the this undated image can be found in the collection of the Montana Historical Society. Photograph (7” x 5”) of a cooper surrounded by barrels inside the Kessler Brewery. Another 7” x 5” photograph, this one of two workers filling barrels inside the Kes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Darwin
John Murray, 1880. 1st Edition. In Darwin's penultimate work he aims "to describe and connect together several large classes of movement, common to almost all plants" (Introduction). This text is interesting in that it "contradicted the results of Julius Sachs, stimulating an argument that disintegrated into a nationalistic contest between Darwin's old-style country-house observations and the new laboratory-based physiological research emerging in the German states" (ODNB). 7 ¾" x 5". Green cloth boards, gilt titles on spine, presumed original brown endpapers. Half title, page of advertisements for Darwin's previous works, full title, copyright, [v]-x contents, [1]-592, [1]-32 publisher's advertisements in rear. Charles Darwin
John Murray, 1880. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Title page dated 1880, two lines of errata on page x, advertisements dated May 1878. Condition: 1 ½" wrinkle to cloth at head of spine, cloth at head and tail of spine bumped, all corners bumped, fore-edge corners at head starting to fray, gilt titles on spine remain bright and intact. Strigils and Sponges - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1880
STRIGILS AND SPONGES Ets vervaardigd in 1880 door Paul Rajon naar de aquarel van Lawrence Alma-Tadema (Opus CXCVII). In potlood gesigneerd door Alma-Tadema en Rajon. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm (druk): 38 x 22,6 cm. Prijs: Euro 1.450,- (incl. lijst)

Brontë, Anne]; [Brontë, Charlotte]; [Brontë, Emily]
Yorkshire, 1880. Commemorative tobacco box carved from the wood of the Brontës' Haworth church in Yorkshire. From 1820 until 1861, the Reverend Patrick Brontë occupied the parsonage at Haworth. His six children, including the novelists Charlotte, Emily, and Anne, grew up in the shadow of the old church. Although the last of the Brontë children died in 1855, Patrick Brontë survived to see Haworth become a site of literary pilgrimage, as readers from around the world came to pay tribute to the authors of Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. In 1879, amid considerable public controversy, the old Haworth church was torn down and rebuilt: "parts of the wooden interior were saved as relics. . . . oak from furniture and rafters was recycled into many items, such as urns, vases, salt boxes, candlesticks, paper knives, picture frames, tobacco boxes, spittoons, tatting shuttles, and at least one 'escritoire.'" See Deborah Lutz, The Brontë Cabinet. A handsome literary souvenir, testifying to the Victorian passion for the Brontës. Polished brass and oak tobacco box, measuring 6 inches high, base 3.75 inches in diameter. Printed paper label reading "Haworth Church" affixed to interior of lid; fitted brass weight inside jar. A few barely visible hairline cracks to wood.

ACL p. 323..
