DURAN FRAY DIEGO.
Escalante, 1880. Used. Raro. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Daniel Clark Sanders
Wright and Sibley, Montpelier, VT, 1812. FIRST EDITION, 1880. 319 pp. Full calf leather with gilt "Indian Wars" title on spine. Binding in nice condition, text is toned. The last page of text is only about 15% there, with the rest provided in facsimile (see pic). Previous owner signature and inscription on ffep and rear pastedown. A very rare Vermont Imprint and Indian War History title. A scarce work on the history of the Indian Wars in New England, written by the president of the University of Vermont. "This book aroused bitter criticism because of its strictures on colonial bigotry and cruelty to the natives." - Streeter. The book was long believed to have been suppressed by its author because of his mortification at the attacks made on it by reviewers, and both Field and Church give long accounts of its supposed destruction. While there certainly were bitter reviews, and the work is quite rare, more modern bibliographers, notably Marcus McCorison in VERMONT IMPRINTS, have suggested that the suppression story may be exaggerated. Later writers have also praised the book as one of the best written histories of the Indian Wars of New England. Howes S84; Church 1306; Streeter sale 727; Field 1351; Sabin 76366; Gilman, p.240; McCorison, Vermont Imprints, 1420; Pilling, Algonquian Languages, p. 441; Pilling, Proof-Sheets 3474. I've done my best to describe the diary, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

Bois-Reymond, Emil Heinrich Du, deutscher Physiologe (1818-1896).
Berlin, 7. III, 1880. 4 SS. 8vo. Erteilt an "Hrn. Loewe in Giessen. Handwritten Confederate Soldier Diary of W.L. McKay, 18th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, C.S.A. 32 pp. Handwritten Confederate Civil War Diary in red leather book with raised bands and "Record" in gilt on front cover. This diary was written by my W.L. McKay, who served as a Confederate soldier in the 18th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, C.S.A.. It is a full account of his time in the war, and the story begins in 1861. It appears to have been written a short time after the war, though no date is given for when it was written out. The diary itself is a red and gold hard-cover "record book." Besides his 32-page account of his experience in the war, the diary also has a newspaper clipping from 1903 pasted inside the front cover, a list of books in a handwriting that is different than WL McKay's (I think it might have been added by one of his children) a Tennessee confederate flag painted on paper and tucked in the pages, and a poem by CB Harwood transcribed by hand. It looks to me like several different generations added things to the diary over the years. McKay begins his account by listing all of the names that he can remember who were members of the 18th infantry. He also draws an interesting diagram of the fortifications the "rebels" built. His company surrendered at Fort Donelson on Feb. 16, 1862 and he became a prisoner of war. He recounts that the "Yankees" transported the prisoners north to St Louis, aboard the steamship "Alexander Scott". Some of the men took an oath of fealty to the US government at this point, and again, he lists the names of those who took the oa … [Click Below for Full Description]

1880. Frauds Exposed; or, How the People are Deceived and Robbed, and Youth Corrupted by Anthony Comstock. New York: J. Howard Brown, 1880. First edition 8vo with 576 pages of text and illustration. The book is in good condition with fraying to top and bottom of spine. Both hinges are strong and intact. This is the author's first book. In 1873, Comstock created the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, an institution dedicated to supervising the morality of the public. Later that year, Comstock successfully influenced the United States Congress to pass the Comstock Law, which made illegal the delivery or transportation of "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material as well as any methods of, or information pertaining to, birth control and venereal disease. George Bernard Shaw used the term "comstockery", meaning "censorship because of perceived obscenity or immorality", after Comstock alerted the New York City police to the content of Shaw's play Mrs. Warren's Profession. During his career, Comstock clashed with Emma Goldman and Margaret Sanger. In her autobiography, Goldman referred to Comstock as the leader of America's "moral eunuchs". Through his various campaigns, he destroyed 15 tons of books, 284,000 pounds of plates for printing 'objectionable' books, and nearly 4,000,000 pictures. Comstock boasted that he was responsible for 4,000 arrests. And he was also partly responsible for 15 suicides. But alas one of his own books has survived! An important historical remnant in the original binding from the creator of American censorship. inv#20374. [Attributes: First Ed … [Click Below for Full Description]
