DARWIN Charles
Holograph ms. in ink. Bifolium printed stationery with integral blank. 8vo. Very good with an old fold. Down, Beckenham Kent, 11 June, A rare unpublished letter by Charles Darwin. This document not only displays his ongoing cordial relations with his publisher, but is proof of the deep public interest held in Darwin's account of his time on the Beagle and his encounters with indigenous population of the New World including Australian Aborigines. This warm letter to John Murray asks for permission to reprint sections from his 1860 work, A Naturalist's Voyage: Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of HMS ?Beagle? Round the World. Darwin is actually writing on behalf of R.F. Charles of the City of London School. R.F. Charles wrote to Darwin on 6 June 1880 requesting permission to use these selected exerpts in his Relfe Brothers Model Reading Books (London 1880-3). He specifically asks after three passages: ?the corrobery [sic] dance of the Australians?, ?Tierra del Fuego, account of? and ?Horsemanship of the Guachos.? Darwin explains that the extracts will ?be used for educational purposes; but I cannot of course grant permission without your consent, as the book is your property. I hope, however, that you will oblige me.? Apparently R.F. Charles had previously applied for permission to Murray himself, though was refused. Permission was evidently granted in the wake of Darwin's intervention as the three extracts appeared in volumes 5 and 6 of the series. In the capacity of naturalist and companion, Charles Darwin … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUGO Victor
- Michel Lévy, Paris 1880, 15,5x23,5cm, relié. - - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

Mattei, Count Cesar [1809 - 1896].
Nice: Printing and Stereotype Offices V.-E. Gauthier and Co., 1880. 1st Edition in English. [2], 6, 235, [5] pp. Frontis, "C. Mattei". 3 views of human figures, pp. 236 - 237. 8vo. 7-1/8" x 4-5/8". Modern brown quarter calf binding with marbled paper boards. New eps. Binding - Fine. Textblock - VG+ (occasional po pencil underlining & marginal notes). Item #33872 Electro-homoeopathy is a derivative of homeopathy that originated with Count Cesar Mattei of Bologna. The name is derived from a combination of electro (referring to an electric bio-energy content supposedly extracted from plants and of therapeutic value, rather than electricity in its conventional sense) and homeopathy (referring to an alternative medicinal philosophy developed by Samuel Hahnemann in the 18th century). Electro-homeopathy has been defined as the combination of electrical devices and homeopathy, however some contend that it is the therapeutic use of homeopathic preparations of certain "electric bio-energy" herbs that is intended by the term. The discipline is regarded as distinct from traditional homeopathy, which relies on serially diluted remedies of substances that cause similar symptoms to those as it is attempting to cure; electro-homeopathy, however, does not directly follow the "law of similars". Mattei studied natural science, anatomy, physiology, pathology, chemistry and botany. He ultimately focused on the supposed therapeutic power of 'electricity' in botanical extracts, making bold, ultimately unsupported, claims for the efficacy of his treatments, including the claim that his treatments … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BINDINGS - VAUGHAN). DAY, LEWIS F.
London: B. T. Batsford, 1880. FIRST EDITION. Housing a master craftsman's tract on the principles of design and ornamentation, this is an extraordinarily fine and beautifully crafted binding by someone whose considerable importance in the bibliopegic world is underestimated because he signed very few bindings of his own. Alex J. Vaughan studied at the Camberwell School of Art, where George Sutcliffe was one of his instructors, before serving in the First World War. After leaving the army in 1918, he went to work for Sangorski & Sutcliffe as a gold finisher and designer. According to the late director of that bindery, Stanley Bray, "Over the years [Vaughan] was at S & S he designed many of the semi-extra bindings, and was very useful going out and interviewing clients. He remained with S & S until the great slump of 1930, and left about 1933." Vaughan himself became an instructor at Camberwell, served as an examiner for the City & Guilds Bookbinding examinations, and wrote a still-valued practical guide to the craft, "Modern Bookbinding: a Treatise Covering Both Letterpress and Stationery Branches of the Trade, with a Section on Finishing and Design." DNB tells us that Lewis Day (1845-1910) "belonged to the same school of artist-craftsmen as William Morris and Walter Crane, and his influence on contemporary ornament, if not so fully recognized as that of those two artists, was considerable. An important educator in design, many of the best-known designers of his day were taught by him and benefited from his belief in natural forms of ornament and high standards of craftsman … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: privately printed. First edition, first issue; 4to, pp. [4], 33; original yellow printed wrappers bound in; contemporary olive buckram lettered in gilt on upper cover; extremities browned, mild red ink transfer on the upper wrap, a number of erudite pencil annotations; very good copy. Penzer, noting that the yellow wrappers contained a printed half-title, is frequently misinterpreted as suggesting that there is a half-title page. This is not the case. There is no half-title page, only the half-title as printed on the front wrapper. The first two issues of this title were published by Bernard Quaritch, the first issue omits the Quaritch name and the date from the title. The two issues together did not comprise more than 200 copies, "and Messrs. Quaritch state that under a hundred were sold." Ostensibly translated by Burton, he in fact was its author; written in 1857 under his nom-de-plume Hâjî Abdû Al-Yazdi but it was not published until 1880 by Quaritch. Penzer, p. 97. Casada 84.
