SANDEMAN, Edward Fraser.
London: Griffith and Farran, 1880. Octavo. Original green diagonal-fine-ribbed cloth over bevelled boards, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board in gilt and black, blind frame to rear, brown coated endpapers, top and fore edge untrimmed. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few small pale markings to boards, mild foxing to fore edge and advertisements, a few trivial spots to title page and text. An excellent copy. Folding map frontispiece. First edition of this "rather interesting account of a tour throughout South Africa from march to October 1878. The author, who was in search of health, started from Pietermaritzburg, and enjoyed some good shooting en route; amongst other places visited were Spitzkop and Lydenberg, and there is an excellent description of these goldfields at this period, together with notes on the Boers and natives" (Mendelssohn), as well as the Sekukuni campaigns. The game he hunted included springbok, blessbox, klipspringer, reedbuck, wildebeest, lion, buffalo, and giraffe. A handsome copy of this "well-written work that ably describes the terrain [and] climate and encounters with native tribes and wild beasts" (Czech). The author (c.1856-1894) is recorded as an officer in the Royal Perthshire Militia (gazetted lieutenant 1874). Czech p. 246; Mendelssohn II p. 267; SABIB IV p. 126. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Doré, illus ] Cervantes Saavedra Miguel
London: Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, [c. 1880]. A very early issue of this wonderfully illustrated Cervantes. With 118 spectacular illustrations by by Gustave Doré. Royal 4to. (32 x 25 cm), half green morocco by Maclehose of Glasgow, green cloth boards, upper cover titled in gilt, spine with raised bands, gilt rules and lettering, marbled edges and endpapers. xxviii, 737 pp. A very handsome and sturdy copy, as fine and fresh and bright, the binding is very strong and well preserved, beautiful and of fine craftsmanship. AN UNUSUALLY HANDSOME COPY. VERY SCARCE IN SUCH WELL PRESERVED CONDITION. Gustave Doré was one of the greatest illustrators of his day. He was born in Strassburg in 1832. In 1848, he moved to Paris where "his facility as a draughtsman was extraordinary." He was a prolific worker and his subjects were usually religious or historical. He died in January of 1883. His grand and magnificent style is a perfect complement for Cervantes heroic tale. This great tome presents one of our favorite printings of the Spanish classic and, because of the weight of the text block, is usually found broken and loose. This copy is as sturdy as one could hope for and is especially handsome as well.

Signed autograph letter of Guy de Maupassant to Countess Potocka, 26 lines in black ink on a sheet of laid paper headed "GM 83 Dulong Street".Maupassant evokes the episode that marks his entry into familiarity with the countess: the famous story of dolls. Following a lost bet, the Countess Potocka sent Maupassant rag dolls representing the ladies invited to a future dinner. By play, Maupassant took six of them and stuffed them with the belly of cloth before autograph dedication of the author them back to the countess. In a word that accompanied the mail, Maupassant boasted of having them all engrossed in one night. To get out of an evening that he would prefer to spend with the countess he had to "[...] make diplomacy, employ the ruses and machinations of the most skilful. In spite of everything, he will only be able to: "[...] save around eleven o'clock or eleven thirty. In order to know the guests who will be at the party, he asks Potocka: " I'll have to give six dolls back to me ". A little joke that reflects their level of intimacy. He regrets to have committed for this evening which prevents him from going to the countess's house: " Do you see where I am? The evening for which I had engaged should not begin to be pleasant until midnight, all guests left. At last, he proposes to: "[...] scream, like the brother-in-law of your friend:" To me camphor and water lily "! Both substances were used as anaphrodisiac or to calm nervousness.Despite his lack of desire, he will have to go to this dinner but he plans to offer: "[...] to God, and to you, this sacrifice which will seem … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Bonfils, Félix).
1880. Oblong album (445 x 315 mm) with 71 large albumen photographic prints, mostly ca. 22 x 28 cm, signed and captioned in the negative (in French and English), mounted on both sides of the album's leaves. Includes a three-part folding panorama of Jerusalem from Mount Olivet, measuring 82 x 21 cms. Ornamental endpapers printed in gilt. Original auburn morocco with gilt upper cover. All edges gilt. A rare and unusually massive Palestine souvenir album containing 71 photographs by the renowned studio of Félix Bonfils (1831-85), the French-born photographer who had come to the Levant with General d'Hautpoul in 1860 and remained active in the East. Based in Beirut, Bonfils produced thousands of photographs depicting Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Greece and other parts of the Ottoman Empire. In the early days of western tourism to the Middle East, his works soon became popular as souvenirs. The photographs were available both separately and as individually arranged albums, but sets of this scope were uncommon, very few exceeding fifty images. The sumptuous binding which the owner chose underlines that this was a luxury souvenir for a more than ordinarily wealthy traveller. It features landscapes and city views, famous sights such as Jaffa Gate (Bab el-Khalil), sites sacred to the three religions (Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Church of the Flagellation, Al-Aqsa Mosque, Mosque of Omar, Wailing Wall), but also sights outside Jerusalem, including Hebron, Bethlehem, the Dead Sea, the River Jordan, Jericho, Wadi el-Kelt, Khan-el-Ahmar, Bethany, Nazareth, and Emmaus. - The photographs occ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bronte, Charlotte, Emily, & Anne
London: Smith, Elder, and Co, 1880. Finely bound set of the works of the Sisters Bronte. Octavo, 7 volumes. Bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards. Gilt titles and tooling to the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, marbled edges, illustrated. In near fine condition. A very nice set. The Brontes were a nineteenth-century literary family associated with the village of Thornton in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne are well known as poets and novelists. Like many contemporary female writers, they originally published their poems and novels under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature.

Brentanos, New York 1880 - These books are from the library of J. Alden Weir and were rebound by his daughter Caro Weir Ely, artist, print maker and bookbinder. The books have been profusely illustrated with stiff photos, most in brilliant color, corresponding to scenes described in the books (appropriate corresponding text is underlined in pencil). A note on a blank fly leaf ("Cora Rutherfurd (sp) - from May 3rd 1914 to June 13th 1914") indicate the source of the photos. The books are undated, but Hathi Trust has 187? and the Tauchnitz copyright edition is dated 1884. The books have marbled end papers and 271, clear, minimally toned pages (gilt edged all around) bound in tan Morocco with with three raised bands on the spine and the boards embellished with a coat of arms on the front and a rose on the rear. A few of the photos of people have them dressed in cloth. These are an exquisite, unique set. (an assumed first edition) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dickens, Charles [1812 - 1870] Brougham, John - Assumed Playwright LeMoyne, W[illiam] J [1831 - 1905] - Actor
Boston: Boston Job Print, Alden Street, (n. d.). 1st printing (presumed), ca 1880. Not found in Bolton. Age-toning to paper, with small diagonal crease to upper right corner, otherwise VG+.. Single sheet broadside, 10-1/4" x 4-3/8", 17 lines of text. A playbill advertising LeMoyne & "His Celebrated Company", with "the entire Company in both Pieces." as appearing at Bangor Maine's famed Norembega Hall, erected in the mid-1850s. Le Moyne an actor of some repute, who, after the Civil War, "returned to the stage where he remained active until the dawn of the twentieth century. He appeared in a number of plays based on the works of Charles Dickens [as here] playing such characters as Fagin, Captain Cuttle, Uriah Heep, Squeers, Plummer, Dick Swiveller and Caleb. In Shakespeare's Hamlet Le Moyne is said to have played every major male role except that of the prince himself. Over his career Le Moyne performed with companies headed by legendary actors Edwin Booth, Edwin Forrest and Charles Fletcher, and in producer Daniel Frohman's Lyceum Theatre Company." [Wiki] Brougham's Old Curiosity Shop [apparently] first performed in Boston, 1866 (cf. Bolton OCS 10); we find no record of this performance in Bolton [nor whatsoever of "Uriah Heep, the 'Umble"... perhaps a bespoke piece tailored strictly for LeMoyne?].

Verdi, Giuseppe.
Large 8vo. Title page, (1) f. dramatis personae and table of contents, 307 pp., with 6 additional pp. bound after p. 124. Plate number 3603. Contemporary half morocco with giltstamped spine title. Marbled endpapers. First French edition: a precious copy signed by the composer during the first performance in French. The signature "G. Verdi" is in the upper right corner of the table of contents beneath the stamp "Souvenir of 22 March 1880". Verdi undoubtedly offered his closest collaborators copies of the score on the occasion of the French staging of the opera, directed by the composer himself at the Palais Garnier in the presence of the entire Parisian world of art, literature, finance, and government. - "Aida" was composed for the inauguration celebration of the Suez Canal, based on a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, and was first staged at the Cairo Opera House (in Italian) on Christmas Eve, 1871. The editorial history of the score is a complex one: the work was first published in Italian by Ricordi in 1872 and then reissued the same year in France (again in Italian) by Léon Escudier, who immediately produced several adaptations and instrumental or vocal arrangements (in French). The French première (in Italian) took place in 1876. On the occasion of the performance in 1880, Verdi gave more prominence to the ballet parts, and Escudier published six pages of additional music, printed and numbered separately and inserted between pages 124 and 125 of the original score. With this addition, also present in this copy, "Aida" reached its definitive form. - First and last pages … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Darwin.
