Publishers' Original Binding,Very Scarce Overall Condition: Good Only This book weighs 1 KG when packed UK Postage: £ 3.99 US Postage: £ 22.99 EU Postage: £ 16.99 European Postage: £ 17.99 Asia Postage: £ 22.99 Worldwide Postage: £ 28.99 DESCRIPTION In the very scarce first issue large paper copy, of which only forty were printed. The City of Dreadful Night is a study in melancholia and the introverted mind. It is a city of the mind, but real: a real unreal city. Nobody knows how they got there because the place itself is lost in a trackless wilderness of savage mountains, ravines, and bleak moors. Even the sea into which the River of the Suicides flows is called Ôshipless'. From the hills, the city is a nocturne in lead and faded gold: a line of faint light marks where the city broods in its own endless night. On the skyline, like congealed grief, looms the city's goddess, Melencolia. In day time the city shrinks till it's no bigger than a human heart but it is always there, a place of despair peopled by a sad brotherhood of monks and kings, priests, drunks, artists, poets, soldiers. It is a brotherhood, being inhabited mainly by men. Few women are there and, says the poet thankfully, fewer children. Nor are there many elderly men, which may suggest that the people afflicted this way either grow out of it or die young. (Thomson wrote the poem in two stages, when he was thirty-six an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shelley, a nephew of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, made several trips to Africa, where this family of birds is found. The latter is rendered perhaps more striking from his being acquainted with this family of birds in their native haunts; and his notes upon the sun-birds inhabiting Prince's Island have been incorporated in my work." Abbe, Ernst
S.Ber. Jena. Ges. Med., 1880. [Click Below for Full Description]

Facsimile. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America in Congress. Benjamin Tyler - Giles Lithograph printing of the Declaration of Independence. Durham and New York: The Giles Lithographic and Liberty Printing Co. for Mess. W. Duke, Sons & Company, 1880 (?). Very Good Condition. Approximately 20 1/4" x 27 1/4". Metal trim on top and bottom. Minor Edge wear and apparent of previous folding. This print is of the famous facsimile originally published by Benjamin Tyler in 1818. Tyler's documents were the first to produce the Declaration in script and included facsimile signatures of the signers. "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the facsimiles exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every capital as in the original. The signatures are curiously exact imitations, so much so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them from the original." (Bidwell, 1989). Tyler's documents are among the most sought after printings of the Declaration. The Giles lithographs are the only exact reproductions of Tyler's work. These lithographs are scarcer than the originals, with one potentially found at the New York Public Library and the American Antiquarian Society.

He issued annotations of many of Shakespeare's contemporaries, somewhat rescuing from the neglect by eighteenth century scholars. His Shakespeare edition was originally published in 1857. William Shakespeare; Alexander Dyce (ed.)
London: Bickers and Son, 1880. Fourth edition. In contemporary tree calf by Southeran. With engraved portrait frontispieces to five of ten volumes. Alexander Dyce (30 June 1798 - 15 May 1869) was a Scottish dramatic editor and literary historian. In 1857 his edition of Shakespeare was published by Moxon; and the second edition was issued by Chapman & Hall in 1866. He also published 'Remarks on Collier's and Knight's Editions of Shakespeare' (1844); 'A Few Notes on Shakespeare' (1853); and 'Strictures on Collier's new Edition of Shakespeare '(1859), a contribution to the Collier controversy, which ended a long friendship between the two scholars. By the time of his death, Dyce had collected a valuable library, containing many rare Elizabethan books, and this collection was left to the South Kensington Museum (Victoria and Albert Museum). His wide reading in Elizabethan literature enabled him to explain much that was formerly obscure in Shakespeare. While preserving all that was valuable in former editions, Dyce added much fresh matter. His 'Glossary', a large volume of 500 pages, was the most exhaustive that had appeared. Complete in ten volumes. CONDITION In tree calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, though with one board detached, and some slight rubbing to the other joints. One other joint starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, aside from the odd spot and some offsetting to the title pages. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.

1880. Nice book...really big, nice book. The Poetical Works of Lord Byron with Illustrations...Published in Philadelphia by Porter and Coates sometime in the late 1800's. The book is in excellent condition, clean, crisp and has all three gold gilded page edges...can't see it to well in the photos but the gold glistens as seen in person. It measures 10" high by 7" left to right and is 2-1/2" thick...due to its having 984 pages. I have searched the web to find another exact copy, never found one like this, found lots of others in varied stages of wear and priced all over the place so my price here is "guess" so if you like it...make an offer.

Estes and Lauriat. Very Good/Near Fine--upper hinges starting, boards still soundly attached. Wear along hinges and extremities of boards. Bindings quite firm and sound. Attractive private bookplate of Oliver Kendall mounted to pastedowns. Lacking one plate, the frontis to Volume 1 by R. Swain Gifford. Contents in superb condition, no foxing or spotting. The American Art Review: A Journal devoted to the Practice, Theory, History and Archaeology of Art. Boston: Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, 1880-1881. The complete run in two volumes, including the first volume, and the second volume (in two divisions, paginated separately, but bound together.) A sumptuous production, featuring many original etchings bound in, by artists including James Smillie, Paul Rajon, Thomas Moran (2 etchings), Peter Moran (2), J.M. Falconer, Albert F. Bellows, S.J. Ferris, R. Swain Gifford, Frederick Stuart Church, Kruseman Van Elten, Stephen Parrish, Anna Lea Merritt, Eliza Greatorex, and Charles A. Platt. There are about 135 full page plates among the two volumes, of which about 50 are original etchings. There may be some confusion on this point, as the table of contents specifies "original etching" only for those works conceived and etched by the same artist (i.e. pinxt. and sculp.) However, many works bound in here (listed merely as "etched by"), are clearly original etchings in terms of process, execution and printing. The distinction of "original etching" vs. "etched by" employed in this work is merely that the latter was made after a painting by another artist, but is still an original … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wilson, John Albert
First Edition. Hardcover. As an architectural depiction of early Los Angeles County, along with Wilson's comprehensive description of the county's townships, this book has no equal. It has come to be known ever since as simply the Thompson & West. J. Gregg Layne in his Books of the Los Angeles District, describes it as "one of the rarest of that fine early series of California county histories [...] complied from the newspapers of the county from 1854 to 1880, as well as city and county records, and from interviews with many early pioneers." Among the estates and residences depicted is a veritable who's who of notable Angelenos, including those belonging to Mrs. Phineas Banning, Don Manuel Dominguez, J.E. Hollenbeck, H.M. Newhall, John Rowland, and W.H. Workman. Includes a full-page colored rendition of H.H. Lloyd and Co's map of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona and 86 lithographed plates, including two two-panel. 11" x 15"; 192 pp. Original dark brown cloth binding over the original black sheep spine, with gilt titles and decorative blindstamping. Small tears to the extremities of a few pages, with a smudge to the border of the map and the opposing leaf. Ink presentation inscription to the Ebell of Los Angeles from Katherine S. Parker, a longtime member, on the Table of Contents leaf. A short tear to the fore-edge of that leaf has been neatly mended. Two additional mends have been made to the verso of the title page. A pair of unobtrusive Ebell ink stamps appear on the front pastedown. The leather has been archivally refurbished. Light fading along the extremities of … [Click Below for Full Description]
