John Murray, 1880. 1st Edition. Hardcover. In Darwin's penultimate work he aims "to describe and connect together several large classes of movement, common to almost all plants" (Introduction). Green cloth boards, gilt titles on spine, presumed original brown endpapers. Half title, page of advertisements for Darwin's previous works, full title, copyright, [v]-x contents, [1]-592, [1]-32 publisher's advertisements in rear. Title page dated 1880, two lines of errata on page x, advertisements dated May 1878. Condition: 1 ½" wrinkle to cloth at head of spine, cloth at head and tail of spine bumped, all corners bumped, fore-edge corners at head starting to fray, gilt titles on spine remain bright and intact. It is a natural extension of 'The Innocents Abroad' as a travel narrative, a return to the Old World. As a cultural document, it is also a natural continuation of the great popular movement of tourism, wherein the 'innocent' becomes a 'tramp'. Alain René LE SAGE
1880. Bon Etat. [Click Below for Full Description]

VERDI, Giuseppe 1813-1901
2 pp. Octavo. Dated Busseto, July 16, 1880. In French (with translation). Verdi thanks Peragallo for depositing 30,000 francs on his behalf; if he should travel to Paris next winter, he would not need to take money with him. He goes on to mention his opera, Aida. "... I see in the papers all the Parisian parties and, alas there are too many! ... and I wish for everybody that it will all be parties and banners! I'm enchanted by the news you give me for Aida... " Slightly worn, soiled and browned; creased at central fold with minor abrasion and repair; small portion of blank upper left corner lacking, not affecting text. "Between February and early April 1880, Verdi and his wife were in Paris to oversee a production of Aida, which featured Gabrielle Krauss, Rose Bloch, and Victor Maurel. It was a resounding success. After Verdi and his wife returned to Italy, Emmanuele Muzio, the conductor, sent them astonishing box-office figures, which surpassed nearly every record set at the Paris Opéra." Phillips Matz: Verdi, pp. 652-53. Luigi Peragallo handled Verdi's French and Belgian accounts until 1881, when Verdi sued him for fraud. Item #24247. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[EMERSON, Ralph Waldo] HAWES, Josiah Johnson & SOUTHWORTH, Albert Sands
@1880s. Photograph. Not examined out of the frame but appears to be Fine. Fine portrait of Emerson, image size 8-1/2" x 12-1/2" matted and framed to an overall size of 15" x 20". On the rear of the frame are two labels from Holman's Print Shop of Boston, circa 1940, on which is stated the following: "This photograph was in J. J. Hawes' studio at the time of his death and was stored with the rest of the contents until 1934, when it came to us for sale. It is a photographic copy of a daguerreotype portrait made by Mr. Hawes in the 1840's. The negative was a collodion-process plate ('wet plate'). This print could have been made as late as the 1890's, but more probably dates from the 1880's. When Mr. Hawes made the copy of the daguerreotype is not known." Southworth and Hawes produced some of the finest daguerreotypes of the 19th Century. Among their subjects, besides Emerson, were John Quincy Adams, Zachary Taylor, Daniel Webster, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Hawes died at the age of 94 in 1901, operating his studio up to the end. During the Depression his daguerreotypes were dispersed among a few museums and private collections.

1880. A coquettish modern woman (likely meant to depict the "big city") twirls her parasol, unaware of the target placed dead-center. This poster was created by the C. Burckardt printing firm, and is part of a larger series of posters that were produced during the 1880s and 1890s. The company was based in the Alsatian town of Wissembourg, along the French border with Germany, and was also known for their cutout puppets, puzzles for children, educational charts, and religious depictions. These posters were created during a time that the Alsace region belonged to Germany, when the town was still called Weissenburg. All posters in this series have been printed via stone lithography, in multiple panels. While the subject matter of these posters vary from common Alsatian characters, to wily animals, to figures plucked from the Commedia dell'Arte, all have a spirit of playfulness that cannot be denied. They visually represent a time of relative peace along the French and German border, between the Franco-Prussian and First World Wars, in which these images would bring much joy to carefree adults and children alike. Perfect for all areas of home and office. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted and linen backed. We have decided to minimize the amount of restoration of this poster, in order to preserve the integrity of the image. This allows for minor tears and handling along the edges, and toning of the paper in areas. This image is of the actual piece; please zoom in to closer inspect it. Tipografia Giannini, 6. Cisterna dell'Olio. 6, 1880. Edizione originale in carta forte. *** [English translation available upon request. WATERS, Thomas J.
[?Shanghai], 1880. Big-Game Hunting in and around Shanghai Lithographed map, dissected and laid down on linen in 24 sections, with contemporary hand-colour in full; preserved in original publisher's green cloth slipcase. Compiled by Thomas Waters (1842-1898), "expressly for Sportsmen" (slipcase label). Waters was an Irish civil engineer and architect who carved out a successful early career in Japan, designing the Imperial Mint in Osaka and the headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Army. He worked briefly in Shanghai in the 1880s, before going out to Colorado to join his brothers in silver and gold mining. This map also appeared in cyanotype, probably originally drawn up as part of Waters' bid for the commission to construct a new waterworks in Shanghai. Waters was a strong contender in the competition, as he had experience in the field: he was partially responsible for the construction of Japan's first sewer system. Rare: OCLC locates only two institutional examples, those in the BnF and University of Chicago.

ART XIXth ALEXANDRE ANTIGNA Rare COLLECTION 73 PHOTOS ALBUMINOUS Ca 1880 E. The description of this item has been automatically translated. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. [FRENCH ARTS XIX - REALISTIC SCHOOL] ALEXANDRE ANTIGNA 1817-1878 Movement: Realisme Masters: Norblin, Paul Delaroche Alexandre Antigna, born March 7, 1817 in Orleans and died February 26, 1878 in Paris is a French painter. BIOGRAPHY Admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1839, student during a year of Sebastien Norblin then During seven years of Paul Delaroche, Alexandre Antigna is above all the painter of the humble, as evidenced by his most famous works: Lightyear (1848, Augustinian Museum of Toulouse), L'incendie (1850-1851, Orleans Museum of Fine Arts) or The forced halte (1855, Augustinian Museum of Toulouse). In the 1850s, his painting After bath (or Les Baigneuses, 1849, Orleans Museum of Fine Arts) is scandalous in his hometown. Very quickly classified among the realists and close to Gustave Courbet, Antigna still stands out from the master of Ornans by the poetry and religion of which he permeates his subjects. From 1860, more serene, he is illustrated in particular in portraits of Aragonese, seascapes and many scenes in Brittany. His subjects also deal with discrimination between city dwellers and poor villagers in the nineteenth century. In 1861, he married Hélène-Marie Pettit, also a painter, granddaughter of Ambroise Rendu. Their son, André-Marc Antigna, is a painter and miniaturist. The brother-in-law of Alexandre Antigna, the art critic Eugène Loudun, pre … [Click Below for Full Description]

1880. An unsuspecting guitar player becomes a shooting target. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters. Width: 26.5 Height: 65

London 1880. A bound copy printed from the original 100 part serial, but undated, unpriced and with no publisher mentioned, so presumably a slightly later printing. The book is firmly bound in brown half-leather with matching cloth boards and simple gilt titles and banded decoration to the spine, it has been neatly re-backed onto similarly toned leather, preserving the original endpapers and pastedowns. Externally it is slightly bumped and rubbed. The text block is browned with chipping to some page edges and neat repairs to the gutters, all the illustrations seem to have tissue guards, quite foxed and tattered and mostly loose so possibly an addition from an earlier owner. One of the more famous Victorian Penny Dreadfuls, based upon the notorious and prolific criminal of the same name.

Charles Darwin
John Murray, 1880. In Darwin's penultimate work he aims "to describe and connect together several large classes of movement, common to almost all plants" (Introduction). This text is interesting in that it "contradicted the results of Julius Sachs, stimulating an argument that disintegrated into a nationalistic contest between Darwin's old-style country-house observations and the new laboratory-based physiological research emerging in the German states" (ODNB). 7 ¾" x 5". Previous owner's bookplate affixed to paste-down endpaper, front hinge starting to crack, second free endpaper has glued bibliography slip from prior bookseller that caused creasing to that page only, which also has prior owner's signature, pages still uncut page 217. Text is free notes or other markings. Front and rear free endpapers have some spotting. Overall a tight, attractive copy despite light wear. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
