A.G. BELL PHOTOPHONE INVENTION PHOTONICS
[SCIENCE, FIBER OPTICS, PHOTONICS, ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL] "POPULAR SCIENCE MONTHY" October 1880 New York. D. Appleton and Co. 1880. First Issue. Octavo (5.75 in x 8.25 in) 152 pp. In printed wraps. Cover reattached at left margin with a portion of another cover which was missing (as shown) Minor wear as shown. Overall, very good . This rare issue of Popular Science Monthly features the important article by Alexander Graham Bell entitled 'ON THE PRODUCTION OF SOUND BY LIGHT' which is the text of an address he had delivered a little over a month prior. This article describes the experiments Bell and his associates discovered which led to the development of his 'photophone'. The photophone is essentially the 19th century precursor of modern fiber optic technology which forms the backbone of the world's telecommunications industry. __________________ The photophone is a telecommunications device that allows transmission of speech on a beam of light. It was invented jointly by Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant Charles Sumner Tainter on February 19, 1880, at Bell's laboratory at 1325 L Street in Washington, D.C. Both were later to become full associates in the Volta Laboratory Association, created and financed by Bell. On June 3, 1880, Bell's assistant transmitted a wireless voice telephone message from the roof of the Franklin School to the window of Bell's laboratory, some 213 meters (about 700 ft.) away. Bell believed the photophone was his most important invention. Of the 18 patents granted in Bell's name alone, and the 12 he shared with his collaborators, four were for … [Click Below for Full Description]

PEACOCK, William & Co.
London, : William Peacock & Co., [1880s]. London, : William Peacock & Co.,, [1880s].. Geography & History. Scotland. Double-sided engraved jigsaw, hand coloured, one side a map of Scotland by Gall & Inglis, the other portraits of the monarchs of England from William I to Victoria, one piece with some loss, engraved key sheets; all housed within original wooden box with sliding lid, pictorial label on top. Peacock & Co was a well known manufacturer of dissected maps and puzzles, founded by Edward Peacock, a Baptist minister and carpenter. His “Peacock Puzzles” were inspired by the games and maps produced by his previous employer, Edward Wallis. He founded Peacock & Co in 1853, and was succeeded in 1861 by his son, William, who expanded it to become one of the world's most prolific producers of wooden jigsaws. The Peacocks used existing maps for their puzzles - the map of Scotland used here was produced by John Gall and Robert Inglis, a team of Scottish map publishers based in Edinburgh.

Midhat, Ahmad Effendi; Davis, Rev. Edwin John, translator
Alexandria, Egypt, 1880-1881. Alexandria, Egypt. Good with no dust jacket. 1880-1881. Hardcover. This is the 1880-1881 first draft manuscript translation by Rev. Davis of the Turkish proverbs collected by Midhat. (The final version of Osmanli Proverbs was published in 1897/8.) It is an octavo, 168 ff in a servicable black shagreen binding, with note at the beginning (i.e., the rear) "This Book was translated by me in the years 1880-1 at Kom el Dikk in Alexandria when I lived, Edwin John Davis, Chaplain. Jan. 3, 1893." and then "There are many mistakes in the translation as I find when working at it now. March 1893" The book that he was working from is a very scarce original copy of Midhat's book of proverbs published in Istanbul about 1878. There is no title page but Davis has writen the publishing information in Anglicized Turkish on the blank. The Turkish proverbs are within borders and the author's English hand written translation and notes are on the side and on the facing page. Davis also includes small sketches of Turkish objects and life, such as a man bringing a copper tray of food, tools, a coffee pot, etc. The Turkish pages are numbered (in Arabic) and Davis has numbered his pages separately, ending on No. 168 (apparently corresponding to the number of bordered proverbs). Black binding is a bit worn but still sturdy and serviceable, the interior is clean and nice with only Davis's notes. Small bit of foxing/browning, but nothing to speak of. At the front end paper is the bookplate of Guy de Guinzbourg, collector of proverbs and purpo … [Click Below for Full Description]

The City of Dreadful Night is a study in melancholia and the introverted mind. It is a city of the mind, but real: a real unreal city. Nobody knows how they got there because the place itself is lost in a trackless wilderness of savage mountains, ravines, and bleak moors. Even the sea into which the River of the Suicides flows is called Ôshipless'. From the hills, the city is a nocturne in lead and faded gold: a line of faint light marks where the city broods in its own endless night. On the skyline, like congealed grief, looms the city's goddess, Melencolia. In day time the city shrinks till it's no bigger than a human heart but it is always there, a place of despair peopled by a sad brotherhood of monks and kings, priests, drunks, artists, poets, soldiers. It is a brotherhood, being inhabited mainly by men. Few women are there and, says the poet thankfully, fewer children. Nor are there many elderly men, which may suggest that the people afflicted this way either grow out of it or die young. (Thomson wrote the poem in two stages, when he was thirty-six an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shelley, a nephew of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, made several trips to Africa, where this family of birds is found. The latter is rendered perhaps more striking from his being acquainted with this family of birds in their native haunts; and his notes upon the sun-birds inhabiting Prince's Island have been incorporated in my work." Abbe, Ernst
S.Ber. Jena. Ges. Med., 1880. [Click Below for Full Description]

Facsimile. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America in Congress. Benjamin Tyler - Giles Lithograph printing of the Declaration of Independence. Durham and New York: The Giles Lithographic and Liberty Printing Co. for Mess. W. Duke, Sons & Company, 1880 (?). Very Good Condition. Approximately 20 1/4" x 27 1/4". Metal trim on top and bottom. Minor Edge wear and apparent of previous folding. This print is of the famous facsimile originally published by Benjamin Tyler in 1818. Tyler's documents were the first to produce the Declaration in script and included facsimile signatures of the signers. "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the facsimiles exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every capital as in the original. The signatures are curiously exact imitations, so much so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them from the original." (Bidwell, 1989). Tyler's documents are among the most sought after printings of the Declaration. The Giles lithographs are the only exact reproductions of Tyler's work. These lithographs are scarcer than the originals, with one potentially found at the New York Public Library and the American Antiquarian Society.
