Robert Cape
British West Indies, Venezuela, Newfoundland: (1880). British West Indies, Venezuela, Newfoundland and Labrador, 24 January 1880 - 24 April 1883. Manuscript fair journal of a mariner attached to the Royal Marines Light Infantry [RMLI], Robert Cape, who was serving on HMS Fantome with the North American and West Indies Station, featuring several shipwrecks, an onboard arrest, a trial war battle at sea, and the transport of a suspected convict of a notable Irish politician. 8vo. 91 pages in manuscript, plus 1 pencil drawing. Vellum boards with blue ruled outline, original mauve and blue marbled endpapers, authorship inscription to front endpaper. Indication of moisture to boards, some separation to hinge, otherwise in very good condition, internally bright, a pleasing account in a neat hand. An enviable seafaring commission to patrol the West Indies would enable this steadfast mariner to visit on numerous occasions the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad, Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Turks, Bermuda, Antigua, Saint Christopher [Saint Kitts], Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, and more. Innumerable voyages and tasks were performed between various Caribbean ports - many exquisite and some rustic - and the island of Bermuda, which consumes the vast majority of the volume, with some brief descriptions of assignments in the Labrador regions and South America. Sounding surveys were performed; crews were rescued from wreckages; two criminals were detained; storms were overcome, and notable Navy Officers visited the vessel. Special missions took him to Atlantic Canada and to Venezuela. From island t … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAUPASSANT Guy de
- S.l [Paris] s.d. » [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Autographed letter-card from Guy de Maupassant to the Countess Potocka, 20 lines in black ink, headed "GM 83, rue Dulong". Berggren, Guillaume (and others)
Istanbul and Athens, 1880. Oblong album (370 x 284 mm) with 47 large albumen photographic prints, generally ca. 20 x 26 to ca. 22 x 28 cm, mostly signed and captioned in the negative (in French), mounted on both sides of the album's leaves. Original half calf binding with burgundy cloth covers, title gilt to upper cover. All edges gilt. A rare souvenir album containing 40 photographs of Istanbul and 7 of Athens. The Turkish images are almost exclusively signed by the renowned studio of Guillaume Berggren (1835-1920), the Swedish-born photographer who had come to Constantinople in 1866 and remained there for the rest of his life. Berggren's photographs were particularly popular with Scandinavian, German and Austrian tourists seeking souvenirs of their Middle-Eastern journey. The present album includes landscapes and city views, famous sights such as the Galata Tower and Bridge, the Yeni Cami Mosque, the Hagia Sophia with its interiors, a "shadirvan" fountain for ritual ablutions in front of the Hagia Sophia, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Rüstem Pasha Mosque, Skutari Cemetery, views of the Golden Horn, street scenes, dervishes, the Bosporus, the French embassy in Tarabya, the city port, the steps leading up the Grand Street of Pera (where Berggren's studio was located), etc. The Greek views include Mount Lycabettus, a two-image panorama of the Acropolis, the Olympieion and the so-called Theseion (Temple of Hephaestus). - A few photographs show insignificant loss of contrast, but they are altogether in good condition, mostly preserving their original crispness. Darwin, Charles. Assisted by Francis Darwin.
London: John Murray, 1880. 8vo, x, 592, 32 (ads dated May 1878) pp. Illustrated with 196 in-text woodcuts. Original green blind-stamped cloth, backstrip titled in gilt, brown coated endpapers, hinges cracked, a little wear to crown and foot of backstrip, text block edges (but not pages) stained, an unsophisticated copy. First edition, first issue, inscribed in Charles Darwin's hand, "Elizabeth Darwin, From her Father". Presentation copies from Darwin, in his own hand, are exceptionally rare (most presentation copies were inscribed "from the author" by the publisher); a copy inscribed to a family member by Darwin himself is extraordinarily so. Elizabeth Darwin, known as Bessy, was Charles and Emma Darwin's youngest daughter, who lived at home until the death of her mother, and died in 1926. Very little is known about her. "Despite her constant presence in the house, only very occasionally does her name appear in any of the mountain of family letters" (Bowlby, Charles Darwin: A New Life, 408). After her mother's death, Elizabeth moved to a small house in Cambridge where she lived to be 78. The book is an extension of Darwin's work on movement in climbing plants to show that the same mechanisms hold true for flowering plants in general. Darwin was assisted by his son, Francis, who had become an accomplished botanist. The book was well reviewed and immediately sold 1500 copies. Freeman 1325. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Wasson, John (1833-1909), U.S. Surveyor-General for Arizona
Tucson: 1880. Folio. 72 handwritten pages. John Wasson had been the editor and publisher of the Tucson Citizen from 1870 to 1874 it was he whose fiery rhetoric led to the Camp Grant massacre of over 100 peaceful Apaches. Rather than this being a negative, it led to his appointment as the U.S. Surveyor-General for Arizona. In the early 1870's his first work was complicated by incredible difficulties with the problem of Indian attacks (usually attributed to Apaches) until the situation improved with General Oliver O. Howard. After detailing the earliest history to the 1820's, it describes the grants under the laws of colonization of over a million acres for California, New Mexico, Texas, and others. Then, Santa Ana annulled much of this determining to prevent annexation of territory. A long section follows entitled Mines and Minerals with the note that the Gadsen purchase [unnamed here] precludes any further American intrusion. He traces the growth of the Spanish Missions (p. 46-52), Note: the Congressional report summarizes as follows: "The Spanish and Mexican Governments reserved the right to the minerals unless expressly granted ; therefore, if the United States patents include the minerals, they not only make good the grants made by Spain and Mexico, but convey additional rights, and there is no inducement to prospectors to make discoveries. PAYOT FRERES.
Chamonix, France, [c. 1880]. Polished wooden hinged box, 19.5 x 12.5 cm, containing 15 samples of semi-precious rocks each on cotton wool in a square cardboard tray, with 'Catalogue' and Payot Freres label mounted to inside of lid; brass hinges and two clasps (the hook of one missing) to opening; manuscript notes to 'Catalogue', very good. The Payot brothers were a trio of mountaineers and guides in Chamonix in the late nineteenth century; the msot celebrated of them was Michel, who acted as a guide for, among others, John Tyndall, Edward Whymper and James Eccles, and achieved the first ascent of Mont Blanc by the southern slope. They were also entrepeneurial in spirit and had a shop in Chamonix where they sold natural history souvenirs such as these collections of alpine minerals, which are now difficult to find in a complete state. The minerals here include three types of jasper, two topazes, an amethyst and a quartz.

ALBERT EINSTEIN
Germany, 1880. No binding. Fine. Ephemera. Set of Anker-Steinbaukasten children's building blocks by F. Ad. Richter & Cie., Rudolstadt, [Germany], c.1880s. Approximately 160 composite quartz sand, chalk, and linseed oil blocks in red, limestone and slate gray, in various sizes and shapes, together with three or more sets of building plans, all contained in two wooden boxes with printed Anker-Steinbaukasten labels. A unique and important artifact of his childhood. Einstein spent his childhood building ""complicated structures"" with these Anker-Steinbaukasten blocks. Accepting his later theory that ""Imagination is more important than knowledge,"" the toys that encouraged his imagination became building blocks for the most important scientific theories of the last millennium. His sister Maja Winteler-Einstein, describing his childhood, recalled that ""The games he played ... were very characteristic of Albert's capacities. These were mostly puzzles, fretsaw work, the erection of complicated structures with the well-known Anker building blocks, and above all the construction of multi-storied card castles, with which he filled his leisure."" HUGO, Victor
Paris: J. Hetzel, A. Quantin, 1880-1885. William Shakespeare; Edited by Alexander Dyce
-London-Bickers and Son, 1880. Book. A smartly-bound set of the works of William Shakespeare, edited and revised by Alexander Dyce. Fourth edition. In contemporary tree calf by Southeran. With engraved portrait frontispieces to five of ten volumes. Alexander Dyce (30 June 1798 15 May 1869) was a Scottish dramatic editor and literary historian. In 1857 his edition of Shakespeare was published by Moxon; and the second edition was issued by Chapman & Hall in 1866. He also published Remarks on Collier's and Knight's Editions of Shakespeare (1844); A Few Notes on Shakespeare (1853); and Strictures on Collier's new Edition of Shakespeare (1859), a contribution to the Collier controversy, which ended a long friendship between the two scholarsBy the time of his death, Dyce had collected a valuable library, containing many rare Elizabethan books, and this collection was left to the South Kensington Museum (Victoria and Albert Museum). His wide reading in Elizabethan literature enabled him to explain much that was formerly obscure in Shakespeare. While preserving all that was valuable in former editions, Dyce added much fresh matter. His Glossary, a large volume of 500 pages, was the most exhaustive that had appeared. Complete in ten volumes. Condition: In tree calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, though with one board detached, and some slight rubbing to the other joints. One other joint starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, aside from the odd spot and some offsetting to the title pages. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED despite detached board which could be … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition, first binding. A collection of Le Fanu's early stories reprinted from THE DUBLIN UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE, selected, with memoir, by Alfred Perceval Graves, including "Strange Event in the Life of Schalken the Painter" and twelve other tales. "Less refined [than the tales collected in IN A GLASS DARKLY (1872)] but equally powerful are the earlier tales published posthumously in THE PURCELL PAPERS (1880), an ingeniously organized work that collects the papers of Father Purcell, a priest whose parish was decidedly unholy." - Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-140. These early tales "date from the late 1830's and deal with a wide variety of themes, not all of which are supernatural ... The best of Le Fanu's earliest work is 'Schalken the Painter' (1839). In this story Le Fanu removes the action from a Gothic setting to a more intimate, domestic sense of place. The story is a gruesome account of Rose Velderkaust's marriage to a ghoul, and the story contains themes developed in Le Fanu's more mature ghostly fiction." - Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature IV, p. 1600. "A Chapter in the History of a Tyrone Family," the short form of THE WYVERN MYSTERY, is believed to be a source for Charlotte Bronte's JANE EYRE (1847). Chinese Painting]
China, ca. 1880. Large painting on glass (85.0 x 54.0 cm) in contemporary Chinese wooden frame (91.7 x 60.7 cm). A Chinese reverse painting on glass. This method of painting has a long history in China. These kind of paintings reached Europe in the 18th century and immediately became quite popular. Many were deliberately made for export. Due to their fragility, few examples have survived until this day, and they are therefore much sought-after, fetching high prices at auction. A painting of this unusually large size is not very common. This is an example from the late Qing-dynasty. It likely depicts a ceremony, as the children's toys each carry a red ribbon and light. The toys are all animals (a dog, deer, hog, and falcon). A very decorative and amazing painting in a very good state, with bright and vivid colouring. The frame is very good, and in its original state.

Zangaki, C. or G. Zangaki
[Alexandria or Port Said], Zangaki, [ca. 1880]. Three original photographs (21.5 x 27.5 cm) of Beja people.= A collection of three original, large photo prints of indigenous people most probably of Beja people. The photo images are as follows: one old man in traditional clothing, with a knife in a band around his left arm - typical for the male members of the northern Beja tribes, perhaps Bisharin, Ababda or Hadendoa, whose territory occupied the middle part of eastern Egypt east through northeastern Sudan into northwestern Eritrea (Beni Amer and Habab). These tribes were well-known as camel drivers who guided caravans from Egypt to Sudan through Nubia, and from the Red Sea coast to the Nile valley. Beja were not an uncommon sight in, for instance, Assuan. (information provided by Mr Dick Nauta). The photo is numbered 516; two women in traditional clothing, one holding a bag with cowry ornaments, the other a tambourine. The photo is numbered 841; two children, most probably siblings, one with a knife carried in the same manner as the old man. This photo is numbered 510. The name Zangaki is handwritten in the lower left corner (apparently in the negative and printed with the image). Part of the same name is visible in the lower left margin of photo 841. Versos are blank. The Greek Zangaki brothers, George and Constantine, were active in the Egyptian region around 1870-1890. "Their photographs of late 19th century Egypt, though produced for sale to the flourishing European tourist trade to Egypt, are highly prized by historians and collectors for their insights into life at … [Click Below for Full Description]
