MOVEABLE. SPEAKING PUZZLE BOX. No pub. information, circa 1880. This is a Victorian cube puzzle in the original box - but this puzzle is different. Each of the 6 cubes makes a different sound when a string is pulled. In this puzzle, one of the cubes is defective, missing the string. The box is very large, measuring 16 1/2" wide x 11 3/4 " deep and 6 " high - 2 small splits on cover else near fine condition with metal clasps. The box is covered with printed chromolithographed paper and the top of the box features a brightly colored rooster with chickens on the farm. Inside the box are six large cubes - each is 5" on a side. Like other cube puzzles of the era, the child can make 6 different scenes. Unlike any other puzzle, EACH OF THE CUBES MAKES A DIFFERENT SOUND when the string on each of the cubes is pulled. Laid-in are the six original large chromolithogrphed scenes that the child uses as guide to assmble the puzzles (the plate on the cover is the sixth scene). This is a glorious puzzle, extraordinarily rare and discounted greatly due to the one defective cube.

Bright, Henry Barnabus [Harry]
UK, 1880. Charming chromolithographic illustration of eleven Australian birds perched on a branch, an echo of the Australian cricket team. Bright (1847-1896) was a successful English natural history painter. Bright also painted a companion picture "An English Eleven" . They are one of the very few separately issued lithographs of Australian birds published in the 19th century. When this print occasionally appears on the market, it is often damaged & faded. With the exception of a very faint mark in the right horizon, it is a superior copy, bright and unfaded with the card quite unmarked. 20 x 7 1/2" on heavy card, with printed title & details, card measuring 25 3/4 x 14". (Jackson, Dictionary of Bird Artists p. 173).

Approximately 7-1/2" x 5" x 3" when built; includes the original red and white cloth handle which remains intact; the illustration of the Brock Hotel is a wood engraving taken from a photograph (the engraving signed "U.S. Photo Eng Co. Boston") and is within a fancy metal-cut border; the copyright slug reads "Robert Gair / Manufacturer / 161 & 163 Chambers, and 143 Reade Sta. / New York." The top of the box is a bit soiled and shows a slight dampstain; all else near fine. A rare example of what is ostensibly the first manufactured lunch box, and a rare artifact from a now forgotten Florida hotel. In 1856, steamboat captain Jacob Brock built a 100-room wooden hotel in Enterprise, Florida, know as The Brock House. Renovated in 1876, the Brock House was a popular tourist destination, and its visitors included such dignitaries as Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland, General William Henry Sherman, Jay Gould, and members of the Vanderbilt and Rockefeller families. Renamed the Epworth Inn in the early 1900s, it later became a Methodist retreat, but the building was eventually razed in 1937. The lunch box was produced by Robert Gair, a Scottish-born immigrant and the inventor of the folding carton. Gair was the force behind the Brooklyn waterfront development and the history of his company is well documented on line. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

DAUDET Alphonse
» [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Letter written in ink on Vergé paper, without date or address. An old handwriting indicates the letter was addressed to Zola, information that can not be verified. Daudet relates the impression that the publisher Georges Charpentier left him during a dinner. The importance of the friendly group formed by the writers of the time is here particularly pregnant: " I want to write him a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hardy, Thomas
1880. A Novel. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1880. Undated endpaper ads. Original mustard yellow cloth decorated in black. First American Edition (it is uncertain whether this or Munro's "Seaside Library" edition preceded; Holt's was, however, the authorized one, and also it was listed in Publishers' Weekly a week earlier). This was issued as No. 118 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series," the series in which most of Hardy's early novels first appeared in America. By 1880 the books in this series were being issued with numbers, with undated endpaper ads, and in mustard yellow cloth; in the 1870s the volumes had been issued un-numbered, with dated endpaper ads, and in cream cloth. In this copy the endpaper ads, though undated, are the primary ones (on the inside front cover listing no Hardy volumes issued after this one, and withOUT this title on the front free endpaper). This is a very good-plus copy (minor cover soil, light rubbing at the extremities). See Purdy p. 35.

Wien, ca. 1880-1930. Meist Bleistiftzeichnungen bzw. Aquarelle, versch. Formate. Das Kunstatelier (auch „Werkstätte für Raumkunst“ u. „Maler-Atelier“) Gebr. Völkel war in der Wiedner Hauptstraße 84 (im 5. Wiener Bezirk) angesiedelt. [Click Below for Full Description]
