James, Henry Jr.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1880. 4 pp preliminary ads plus 8 pp ads, all undated. Original pale buff wrappers decorated in black and red. First American Edition of the first title, and First Authorized Edition of the latter one. "The Diary of a Man of Fifty," after first appearing serially on both sides of the Atlantic in July 1879, was included in the two-volume THE MADONNA OF THE FUTURE (London 1879, two volumes); "A Bundle of Letters" appeared serially only in Paris (in December 1879), from which in early 1880 it was pirated by Loring of Boston -- which then in turn was pirated by Munro of New York before Harper came out with this authorized edition in April. This title was issued as No. 135 in Harper's "Half Hour Series," issued both in buff wrappers (as here) at 25 cents, and in green cloth at 40 cents. Although clothbound copies appear in three states, wrappered ones appear in only one, with (appropriately) only 132 titles listed in the preliminary "Half Hour" ads. This is a near-fine copy, remarkably clean, with only the slightest of wear at some corners. In our experience this title is uncommon in any state (in fact this is only the third time we have offered it), but the fragile wrappered copies seem to be even scarcer than the cloth ones. Supino 14.2.0; Edel & Laurence A14. Housed in a custom clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

In his introduction to his wife's book he details the various historical attempts at this same endeavor. Among his many achievements, David Gill was a pioneer in the field of astrophotography, he photographed the Great Comet of 1882, and he served as the director of Lord Lindsay's (later, 26th Earl of Crawford) private observatory. Also, the Carte du Ciel project-an international effort to catalogue and map the stars-was continued largely due to Gill's support. His expedition to Ascension Island was partially funded by the Royal Astronomical Society, where he later served as president from … [Click Below for Full Description]

TWAIN, Mark
London: Chatto & Windus, Picadilly, 1880. 1880 Mark TWAIN 1st London eds Tramp Abroad Equator Pudd'nhead Roughing It 5vA fine collection of five first edition Mark Twain novels.'The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims' Progress' is a travel book by American author Mark Twain published in 1869 which humorously chronicles what Twain called his "Great Pleasure Excursion" on board the chartered vessel Quaker City (formerly USS Quaker City) through Europe and the Holy Land with a group of American travelers in 1867. It was the best-selling of Twain's works during his lifetime, as well as one of the best-selling travel books of all time. 'Roughing It' is a book of semi-autobiographical travel literature by Mark Twain. It was a prequel to his first travel book The Innocents Abroad (1869). The book follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861-1867. Twain consulted his brother's diary to refresh his memory and borrowed heavily from his active imagination for many stories in the book.'A Tramp Abroad' is a work of travel literature, including a mixture of autobiography and fictional events. The book details a journey by the author, with his friend Harris (a character created for the book, and based on his closest friend, Joseph Twichell), through central and southern Europe. The book is the fourth of Mark Twain's six travel books published during his lifetime and is often thought to be an unofficial sequel to the first one, The Innocents Abroad.Mark Twain's satire novel 'The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson' is told in typical Twain fashion, infant … [Click Below for Full Description]

James, Henry Jr.
New York: Harper & Brothers, n.d. [1880?]. 4 pp preliminary ads plus 12 pp ads, all undated. Original flexible green cloth stamped in black and red. First Edition, issued as No. 82 in Harper's "Half-Hour Series." This is the tale of Daisy and her newly-rich mother, from Schenectady New York, vacationing in Switzerland among Europeans and Americans who ostracize them because of their ignorance of social convention: James's observation of her compatriots is excellent, an acute and witty comment on Americans abroad who have so hurriedly embraced the 'other' culture that they can no longer recognize the virtues of their own. Daisy's innocence offends them because they have forgotten that it can exist. [CGEL] After first appearing serially in Cornhill Magazine in June-July 1878, this American edition was the first to come out, in November of that year (but with its title page dated 1879); the two-volume English edition (with two other tales) did not come out until February 1879. This copy is from an early impression (sixth and final?), with 145 "Half-Hour" titles (including this one) listed in the preliminary ads; the dated first impression lists only 79 titles, and subsequent (undated) impressions list 94, 100, 120, 130 or (as here) 145 titles. Copies were issued in wrappers (at 20 cents) as well as in this cloth (at 35 cents); on this copy the spine lettering is in black (on some it is red -- no priority known). This is a near-fine copy of this small, fragile volume, slightly rubbed at the extremities. Edition originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

Publisher's brown blind-ruled cloth, gilt-lettered spine, floral endpapers; 4,xi,[3],512,[2],4,[4]pp. Moderate wear to extremities. Few light red pencil marks to four leaves. Trifles of ink writing atop front free endpaper and second blank leaf. Several thin ink lines on pages 138 and 241. Binding tight. 19 x 13 cm. George, an unknown printer in 1870's San Francisco, witnessed the city's evolution from rough encampment to wealthy metropolis, while at the same time observing the emergence of pauperism. He endeavored to discover why wealth grew simultaneously with poverty and, after years of study, produced this book, determining that a single tax on land value was the solution. Once early publishing difficulties were overcome, sales of the book skyrocketed into the millions internationally, exceeding all titles other than the bible in the 1890s. As a result, the Single Tax Movement was founded and George soon became the third most famous American, behind only Thomas Edison and Mark Twain. George inscribed this copy to Wm. B. Scott with whom he worked at The Standard, a weekly single-tax newspaper George founded and published from 1887 to 1890. An impressive signed association copy of what is considered the most influential of American works on economics. It is indeed ironic that, despite the exalted efforts of George, today's uber-wealth of San Francisco co-exists with a multitude of homeless souls cast upon her streets.
This has become quite a scarce James first edition, the first impression of … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

James, Henry Jr.
Boston: Loring, Publisher, n.d.[1880]. Original cream printed wrappers. First Edition. Loring gleaned these pieces from an English-language weekly in Paris and, since James had not copyrighted them, published them without authorization. James wrote to his father, "[Loring] has no moral right, & his doing so without asking my assent or offering me any profit remains a scandalous & impudent proceeding. Will you kindly send me 2 or 3 more of his pamphlets? Since he has issued the thing, I may as well have 'em to give away.". After this appeared in The Parisian in December 1879, Loring published this booklet in late January 1880; in early April, Harper followed suit, combining it (likewise in wrappers) with "Diary of a Man of Fifty." "A Bundle of Letters" did not appear in the UK until January 1881, when it and another story were added to WASHINGTON SQUARE to fill out two volumes. This copy is stapled, not sewn, and has the wrapper in E&L's state "c," with no comma after "Jr." and with the author's name printed in widely-spaced small-serif letters. Also, on this copy's wrapper, the blue lines are horizontal and the red lines vertical, and they are not present on the inside covers -- variants mentioned by Supino and E&L. This is a very good-plus copy, perhaps near-fine, with minor wear toward the spine ends and moderate wrapper soil; at the top of the title page is the early ownership inscription of a female student at Bradford Academy (of Haverhill MA). This is quite collectible condition for such a fragile early James piece. Supino 13.6.0; Edel & Laurence A13a; Blanck 10548. [ … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

When you open the book, the first front end paper is attached to the inside cover, but the rest of the textblock is pulled away from the inner spine (see photo). The pages, however, are well-bound to one another, actually no cracks, (maybe one tiny one) or spaces between any of the facing pages. The binding at the rear cover is identical to that of the front cover. The covers are not detached. The pages are moderately foxed, spots on every page, also a few mild water stains, and a few other stains, including traces of flowers. There are a number of instances where there is a short tear off the bottom or top edge at or just adjacent to the gutter. I saw only a few larger tears (1 to 1 1/2 inches). Busch drew on contemporary parochial and city life, satirizing Catholicism, Philistinism, strict religious morality, and bigotry. His comic text was colourful and entertaining, using onomatopoeia, neologisms, and other figures of speech, that led to some work being banned by the authorities. The Wilhelm Busch Prize and the Wilhelm Busch Museum help maintain his legacy. The 175th anniversary of his birth in 2007 was celebrated throughout Germany. Busch remains one of the most influential poets and artists in Western Europe.' Contents: I. Ice-Peter, II. Cat A … [Click Below for Full Description]
