Pogge, Paul.
Berlin, Reimer, 1880.. VIII, 246 Seiten, 1 Bl. (Embacher). - Henze IV, 157/58, Embacher 233, Hess/Coger 3090. St. Ignatius Print, Montana, 1880. First Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo (measures approx. 7-1/4 x 5-3/4"). 45pp. Self-wrappers (though apparently trimmed, as Schoenberg's copy is a good 20% larger), soiling and folded corners throughout; signatures loose, but complete. A Good copy of a rare Jesuit Mission Press imprint. "Part I" (p1-17) contains prayers and a catechism; "Part II" (p19-45) contains prayers and hymns. SCHOENBERG 7, PILLING, Salishan, p28. // "It was in the Mission Boys' School that the St. Ignatius Press operated. Learning to set type and to operate the press was one occupation, among others, for Indian boys who attended the school." (Schoenberg, p11) The school did not acquire a press until 1875; and it is no small accomplishment that the most impressive item to be produced (A Dictionary of the Kalispel, 1877-9) came off the press within a few years.

Walsh, W.C
St. Louis: A. Gast & Co., 1880. AN IMPORTANT TEXAS LAND GRANT Paper size: 19 1/2" x 20 1/2" Lithograph Texas, without gold mines or fabulous cities, was rich with abundant and affordable pubic land, which attracted a steady stream of visitors during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lured by the dream of land ownership or profit from land speculation, many left their homelands for the Texas wilderness. It would be difficult to find better illustrations of this migration than the county survey maps charting the boundaries of tracts and names of grantees. These early maps, contemporary with the arrival of new settlers, provide a fascinating visual history of Texas land policy and the settlement of the Lone Star State. While Texas remained a Spanish dominion, land grants were granted to Spanish subjects only. Authority to grant land rested with the viceroy of New Spain in Mexico City until 1767 when the governor of the province of Texas was invested with the authority to issue grants. In 1820 Spain passed a law allowing foreigners to settle in the empire. The government of the now independent Mexico, which controlled the vast public lands of Texas, followed its colonial predecessor's example and in the proceeding years thousands of Anglo Americans undertook the arduous journey across the continent to take advantage of the opportunity to become Texas landowners. Large land grants were also awarded to colony leaders called empresarios, the most famous of whom are probably Moses and his son Stephen Austin. With no central land office, each colony appointed a land commi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dooner, P[ierton] W.
Alta California Publishing House, San Francisco 1880 - Octavo, pp. [1-3] 4 [5] 6-8 [9-11] 12-258, flyleaves at front and rear, five inserted plates with illustrations by G. F. Keller, original pictorial terra cotta cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold and blind, rear panel stamped in blind. First edition. The Chinese conquer the United States. A very early yellow peril novel which appears to be the first treatment of this theme by an American writer. "The tale of the future did not begin to develop in the United States before the 1880s. The first of the new American wars was the great disaster related in Pierton Dooner's LAST DAYS OF THE REPUBLIC of 1880. It is an early example of the mortal blow dealt by the enemy from within, then a novel device that would become a universal stereotype before the end of the century. On this occasion Chinese laborers combine to take over the United States; the Imperial Dragon flag of China is raised over the Capitol; Washington falls to the merciless yellow men; and, in keeping with the unrelenting workings of these propaganda stories, the end comes for the United States." - Clarke, Voices Prophesying War: Future Wars 1763-3749 (1992), pp. 42-3. RAJON, Paul Adolphe (1843/44 - 1888)
1880. Etching. Printed on fine Japanese paper. Proof impression. In good condition apart from some mild creases in sheet. Image size: 5 x 3 ¾ inches. An intimate portrait of Mr. Reid, the Keeper of Prints at the British Museum by the celebrated French etcher Paul Adolphe Rajon.Paul Adolphe Rajon was a French painter and printmaker. After a rudimentary education he moved to Paris where he made a living as a photographer while studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Isidore-Alexandre-Augustin Pils. In Paris he became friendly with the etching revivalists and learnt to etch under Léon Gaucherel and Léopold Flameng. Although he made debut at the Salon in 1865 with a drawing, he decided to devote himself to etching and exhibited only etching for the rest of his career. His works, which were mainly reproductions of paintings by contemporary artists or by Old Masters such as Gainsborough, Rembrandt and Rubens, appeared in the journals L'Art and Gazette des beaux-arts and were also published by Galeries Goupil. He also produced original portrait etchings of contemporary writers including Turgenev, Tennyson and Théophile Gautier. In 1873 Rajon received a commission through Bracquemond to go to England. Thereafter he visited the country for six months a year, making portrait etchings such as Darwin, after Walter William Ouless (1848-1933), and Mrs Rose, after Frederick Sandys. Both in France and England he enjoyed financial and critical success and, through his acquaintance with the American print dealer Frederick Keppel (1845-1912) in New York, his fa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Trials; Marriage Law. Criminal Conversations
1880. London, c.1857. Criminal Conversation's Influence on Later Divorce Law [Trials]. [Marriage Law]. Crim. Con. Actions and Trials and Other Proceedings Relating to Marriage Before the Passing of the Present Divorce Act. London: N.p, c.1880. [iv], 110, [2] pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 5"). Three-quarter calf over marbled boards, rebacked retaining portions of original backstrip, hinges mended. Some rubbing to extremities, offsetting and foxing to endleaves, light toning to text. A handsome copy of a scarce title. $250. * Only edition. With two cases involving Thomas Erskine as counsel. "Actions for what was formerly known...as crim[inal] con[versation] were nominally abolished thirty years ago: that they were not actually got rid of, as will presently be shewn, is evident from the wording of the Divorce Act.... It is a remarkable fact, however, that in spite of the loose wording of the Act, such actions have become of such a rare occurrence as to be virtually at an end, and what the Act was intended to bring about, while failing to do it technically, has yet to come to pass. The object of the following pages is to show the nature of the legal proceedings formerly in vogue as necessary before an injured husband could clear himself of an adulterous wife and marry again, and a number of interesting cases, which attracted a deal of public attention, in their day, are given, from which it may be readily perceived with what facility conspiracy and fraud could be perpetuated.": Preface [iii]. Not in Sweet & Maxwell or the British Museum Catalogue.
