October 1, 1879, Additions to, July 31 1880. Lithograph map, with original hand-colour in outline, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into original red cloth covers with publisher's label, rubbed. Stanford's map of Afghanistan, showing the border between Afghanistan and British India following the treaty of Gandamark. The Treaty of Gandamak officially ended the first phase of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Mohammad Yaqub Khan ceded various frontier areas to Britain while retaining full sovereignty over Afghanistan. It was signed on 26 May 1879 by King Mohammad Yaqub Khan of Afghanistan and Sir Louis Cavagnari of British's Government of India at a British army camp near the village of Gandamak, about 70 miles east of Kabul. The treaty was ratified by Lord Edward Robert Bulwer Lytton, Viceroy of India, on 30 May 1879. The map also marks the routes of the British forces led by General Roberts, who in July 1880, led a column of British and India troops to relieve the British forces besieged in Kandahar; and also that of Ayub Khan, from Kabul to Kandahar, who had previously defeated the British at the battle of Maiwand.

MAXWELL, James Clerk.
London: Harrison & Sons, 1880. First edition, in the very rare original printed wrappers, of Maxwell's last paper, "published posthumously in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, [which] concerned a means of measuring the speed of the Earth through the hypothetical aether, and was the inspiration for Michelson and Morley's famous experiment. The null result of that experiment was to lead to the Special Theory of Relativity" (Longair, Maxwell's Enduring Legacy, p. 71). "Maxwell's words had stimulated Michelson to carry out one of the great experiments of physics" (Longair, CavMag, p. 13). "The paper was in fact by George Stokes, reporting a letter which Maxwell sent to Mr. D[avid] P[eck] Todd of the Nautical Almanac Office in Washington dated 19 March 1879. The main body of the letter concerns the use of accurate timing of the eclipses of Jupiter's satellites as a means of measuring the speed of light plus the Earth's motion through the ether. This required an accurate knowledge of the orbits of Jupiter's satellites. Maxwell writes, 'I have therefore taken the liberty of writing to you, as the matter is beyond the reach of anyone who has not made a special study of the satellites.' But, more germane is the remark in an earlier paragraph. '... in the terrestrial methods of determining the velocity of light, the light comes back along the same path again, so that the velocity of the earth with respect to the ether would alter the time of the double passage by a quantity depending on the square of the ratio of the earth's velocity to that of light, and this is quite too small … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scale 1:100. 58 x 55cm; 60 x 77cm; 80 x 37.5cm; 36.5 x 33cm; 38 x 76cm; 37.5 x 33.5cm; 152.5 x 106cm; 94.5 x 54cm; 106 x 74cm; 157 x 74cm 155 x 52.5; 92.8 x 104cm. Some worming, chips and splitting at joins but generally very good. These fascinating and handsome sheets appear to be related to the 1873 Land Tax Reform. The Land Tax Reform was a huge change in land ownership establishing for the first time private ownership of land. Taxation targets were required to be reached by authorities throughout the country and this combined with under reporting led to discontent and at times rioting. It is clear from these plans that the temple authorities behind them, did not want to pay more tax than they absolutely had to. Much of what appears to be temple grounds, to the casual visitor is designated by colour coding to be public land. Only the areas with built structures on it are included in the taxable colour coding. It seems likely that a Shinto priest or priests may have submitted these plans to the local administrative office to comply with the new legislation. Although the Land Tax Reform was passed in 1873 it took a number of years to roll out across Japan. One of these sheets is dated Meiji 13 however the others are not dated but appear to be from the same time. These handsome sheets include images or plans of the following 6 shrines and 3 temples located in Kanagawa prefecture: The plans show from the entrance gate … [Click Below for Full Description]

JACKSON, William Henry (1843-1942)
[Denver, 1880. Image size: 9 7/8 x 13 inches. On period card mount, measuring 17 3/4 x 14 inches, with a period manuscript ink and floral border. Early photograph of Santa Fe. Jackson began his career in photography in 1858, working as a retouching artist in a studio in Troy, N.Y. In the 1860s, after serving briefly in the Union Army, he worked at several studios in Vermont before moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1867 where he established his own studio. He worked on an extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad, which earned him enough notice to be recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team. With the Survey, Jackson explored and photographed vast areas of the West, including Yellowstone and parts of Colorado, Montana, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Jackson's artistic growth as a landscape photographer evolved and quickly matured when he was hired by Hayden. Influenced by Thomas Moran, a painter on the survey, and photographers C. R. Savage and A. J. Russell, Jackson absorbed the aesthetic of romantic engagement of the western landscape and development and colonization of the Territories. However this was countered by the inherent drama of being the first to photograph many high mountain peaks, valleys and western scenes in a more detailed and topographic style. In 1879, his work with the Survey at an end, he set up a commercial photography studio in Denver, marketing landscape photographs of the West both for his own purposes and on behalf of various railroads. The present image date to Jackson's time in Denver. J … [Click Below for Full Description]

MIGUEL DE CERVANTES
Barcelona. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Leipzig: Pavla Riube, 1880. Small quarto. 8pp. plus six plates laid in throughout. The chromolithographed plates illustrate the stages of the story, commonly known to American audiences as "Sleeping Beauty", from the princess' birth, to the pricking of her finger on the spindle, to her reawakening by the prince. The tale varies slightly to better suit Eastern European readers, but the overarching story remains familiar. This particular edition is anonymous, but is based on that by Vasilii Zhukovskii, who first translated and adapted "Sleeping Beauty" in the early nineteenth century. Bound in heavy pictorial wrappers, which have had some expert conservation. Expected toning throughout. Very good overall.

[Reed, Charles Wellington]
[Various places, 1880. [30] leaves, 3 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches each, graphite on paper. Loose leaves, original stitching perished. A few minor chips, and notches from old stitching. Moderate tanning. About very good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase and chemise. A small sketchbook containing thirty-five pencil drawings by illustrator and Civil War veteran Charles Wellington Reed. Reed served in the Ninth Massachusetts Light Artillery from 1862 to November 1864, when he was wounded and then transferred to the staff of Gouverneur K. Warren, where he was a topographical engineer. He participated in or was present at several major engagements, including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Gettysburg, where he saved the life of his captain, John Bigelow, for which he was eventually awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Reed was an active artist during and after the Civil War, and his drawings were used to illustrate a number of works, including HARDTACK AND COFFEE and the BATTLES AND LEADERS OF THE CIVIL WAR series. One of the sketches reflects part of Reed's Civil War experience, depicting "Camp Stevenson Newbern N.C." It shows a barrack with tents and picket guards at this Union post established when the North seized the lower Nuese River and New Bern in late 1862. Camp Stevenson was a fort just north of the town along the river, and remained a post until the Union took over more of coastal Carolina in late 1864 and early 1865. The sketches here otherwise depict mostly non- military and foreign military themes. A number of images show children dancing at a f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Item #47117 Moths one of Ouida's novels that deals "with contemporary social issues" and does so in a satiric fashion wherein "she describes the social hierarchy being eaten away by parasites and hypocrites." [Bloomsbury Guide to Women's Literature, p. 886]. The work was viewed as one of her better efforts from her middle period, and spawned a theatrical adaptation. OCLC records just 2 holding institutions for this first edition: the British Library & NYU. NB. Since Sadeir had a copy, we also find the title at UCLA; and the Wolff copy is held by the HRC.
