[Click Below for Full Description]

ROCKWOOD, George
[George Rockwood] [New York] [1880]. Large format 20" x 12" original print, black and white photograph circa 1880. Matted and framed with company title, in original 32.5" x 26.5" traditional wooden frame. Photograph of the Montague Paper Company's Mills in Turners Falls, MA by New York photographer, George Rockwood. A prominent 19th-century photographer based in New York City. Initially, Rockwood worked in landscape photography, shifting his focus to portraiture in the mid-1880s. Rockwood has been credited with introducing the carte-de-visite format of photography to the United States from France. Rockwood was also a member of elite photographic societies during the 1870s and 1880s and contributed articles to their published journals. Over the course of his career, he photographed an astounding 350,000 people. This Rockwood photo may have been the original source for the engraving of the mills published in the 1891 illustrated book 'Picturesque Franklin' (Wade, Warner & Co.). The same engraving was used in many contemporary histories of Turners Falls, Massachusetts such as this example from 1892 which describes the Montague Paper Company: 'In 1872 the manufacture of book paper was inaugurated and to the production of these two kinds of paper the mill was for some time devoted; now the product is wholly news or ordinary printing paper. In 1874 the works were enlarged by the addition of a wing three stories in height and measuring 100 by 55 feet, and in 1875 the corporation purchased the works of the Turners Falls pulp company, directly east, and consisting of a two-story bri … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BINDINGS - RAMAGE). ELIOT, GEORGE
London: Smith, Elder, and Co, 1880. No. 308 OF 1,000 COPIES. This is a deluxe limited edition of Eliot's historical novel, offered here in lovely custom bindings from a leading English workshop. The sole Eliot novel to be set in the distant past, "Romola" was inspired by a visit to Italy the author made with her lover George Lewes. According to DNB, "in Florence, Lewes drew [Eliot's] attention to the history of the city in the late fifteenth century, particularly the role in public life played by the Dominican monk Savonarola, who led a religious revival after the fall of the Medici family but was tried and executed as a heretic in 1498." It is against the background of Savonarola's fall that our story takes place. Our volume features a graceful design from one of the most respected English binders during the last half of the 19th century. Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic. In 1860 Ramage purchased the binding business of Alexander Banks, Junior, in Edinburgh, then returned three years later to London, where he was in business at various locations into the 20th century (W. D. and N. M. Ramage carried on the business until 1929). Though the range of their designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably fine gilt work.. 265 x 180 mm. (10 1/2 x 7"). 1880. Ranieri, Antonio.Sette anni di sodalizio con Giacomo Leopardi. Napoli, Tipografia Giannini, 1880. In-8°, pp. 126, legatura in tutta tela beige, titolo su tassello al dorso, prima carta di guardia in parte slegata. Ottimo esemplare, fresco. [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Come Nuovo. William Addison Dwiggins (1880-1956) was among the most influential and innovative designers of the early twentieth century. He was a master calligrapher, type designer, illustrator, private press printer, and a pioneer of advertising, magazine, and book design. Despite this, too few contemporary designers and design enthusiasts are familiar with the full scope and remarkable creativity of Dwiggins's work. The Book W. A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design will offer an engaging and inspiring overview of the designer's wide-ranging creative output and lasting impact on the graphic arts. Bruce Kennett's careful research, warm prose, and inclusion of numerous personal accounts from Dwiggins's friends and contemporaries portray not only a brilliant designer, but a truly likable character. Deluxe edition, limited and numbered. This copy is 72/211 Signed by the authors. Advance Praise for W. A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design "A book to spend a year with. This book is many things, but most of all it is proof positive that if there is any doubt about the origin theory of graphic design, Dwiggins did more to promote, diversify, and integrate the graphic, typographic, and printing-arts disciplines than anyone of his generation." -- Steven Heller, author, art director, and design historian "One of the many strengths of this book is that it deals both with Dwiggins's familiar typefaces -- Metro, Electra, Caledonia -- and with his less well-known types, illustrated with drawings or trial cuttings. The result is the most complete conspectus we have of an extraordinary variety … [Click Below for Full Description]

It was published by Chapman and Hall and it contains all three volumes bound in one book. Overall it is in a very good condition showing some wear and as far as I can see one page is torn. Macmillan and Co, 1880. Condition: Good. Both books are in good condition with age taken into consideration but they do have some flaws. The most noticeable would be a split/tear to the top of the spine of second volume (visible in photograph). A bit untidy in this area but a restorer should be able to repair this quite easily.Apart from this most other wear is to be expected. Discolouring with age as expected (some foxing), very occasional pencil annotations and some light internal cracking to spine (bindings still tight). Some of the tissue guards are missing so there is sometimes shadowing onto opposite pages of the illustrations. Some of the tissue guards are attached and some are not, some of them are more discoloured/creased than others. One page has a very small closed tear on top edge and there is a larger tear to the spine of one fold-out illustration (bottom third). Rough cut pages (as issued) just one of which has not been cut. Some creasing, mostly light but heavier in places. DETAILS OF BOOK This listing is for the highly prized and much sort after second edition 2 volume set on the 'Life and Works of William Blake'. The first volume is a biography and the second a compilation of Blake's poetry, prose, artwork and illustrated manuscript. Macmillan and Co, 1880. Condition: Good. DETAILS OF BOOK This listing is for the highly prized and much sort after second edition 2 volume set on the 'Life and Works of William Blake'. The book is titled: Life of William Blake with Selections from his Poems and Other Writings. The first volume is a biography and the second a compilation of Blake's poetry, prose, artwork and illustrated manuscript. The book was first published in 1863 and largely written by Alexander Gilchrist, who had spent many years compiling the material and interviewing Blake's surviving friends. However, Gilchrist did not complete the work because of his sudden death from Scarlett Fever in 1861. The work was published two years later, having been completed by his widow Anne Gilchrist with help from Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti. This edition was published in 1880 by Macmillan and Co. London. The 1863 edition became the first standard text on Blake and became the foundation for the extensive study of his life and work. This second edition is considered a more definitive and desirable edition than the first, as it is enlarged and illustrated from Blake's own works. It also includes additional letters and a memoir from the author. 431 and 383 pages respectively and text in English. Size approximately 16.5 x 24 cms. The many illustrations that are included feature prints from Blake's Virgil woodblocks and electrotypes made from the original copper plates of the Songs of Innocence and of the Experience. 1880. A tousled, but ever stylish countryman plays us the fiddle. This poster was created by the C. Burckardt printing firm, and is part of a larger series of posters that were produced during the 1880s and 1890s. The company was based in the Alsatian town of Wissembourg, along the French border with Germany, and was also known for their cutout puppets, puzzles for children, educational charts, and religious depictions. These posters were created during a time that the Alsace region belonged to Germany, when the town was still called Weissenburg. All posters in this series have been printed via stone lithography, in multiple panels. While the subject matter of these posters vary from common Alsatian characters, to wily animals, to figures plucked from the Commedia dell'Arte, all have a spirit of playfulness that cannot be denied. They visually represent a time of relative peace along the French and German border, between the Franco-Prussian and First World Wars, in which these images would bring much joy to carefree adults and children alike. Perfect for all areas of home and office. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted and linen backed. We have decided to minimize the amount of restoration of this poster, in order to preserve the integrity of the image. This allows for minor tears and handling along the edges, and toning of the paper in areas. This image is of the actual piece; please zoom in to closer inspect it. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters. Width: 26.25 Height: 64.75
