[VERNE (Jules, 1828-1905, French Science Fiction Writer)]
Fine unsigned Woodburytype Portrait Photograph, by Lock and Whitfield, showing him head and shoulders, in near profile, with an authoritative look, oval 4½" x 3½" on mount 10¾" x 8", no place, no date, circa The term Woodburytype refers to both a photomechanical process and the print produced by this process. The process produces continuous tone images in slight relief. A chromated gelatin film is exposed under a photographic negative, which hardens in proportion to the amount of light. Then it is developed in hot water to remove all the unexposed gelatin and dried. This relief is pressed into a sheet of lead in a press with 5000 psi. This is an intaglio plate. It is used as a mold and is filled with pigmented gelatin. The gelatin layer is then pressed onto a paper support. It is thought to produce the finest photographic images.The Woodburytype was developed by Walter B. Woodbury in 1864, first used in a publication in 1866 and widely used for fine book illustration from about 1870 to 1900.

Employers' Union, Lynn Massachusetts
Employers' Union. Garfield, James] WORKINGMEN! Can you afford to work as cheap as the Chinese? If so, vote for JAMES A. GARFIELD. Probably Lynn, Mass., January 1880. 28 cm x 22 cm. Printed on diaphanous paper. This rare surviving broadside for the presidential campaign of 1880 has undergone a surface cleaning to remove superficial and ground-in dirt. A previous repair with tape has been reversed. This broadside was washed to reduce acidity and some slight discoloration, and it was sized with gelatin to restore crispness and resilience to the paper. It has been lined with mulberry paper and wheat starch paste. Expertly conserved condition is very good. James A. Garfield (1831 - 1881) is the only sitting member of the House of Representatives to have been elected to the Presidency. His tenure as President was very short, as he was assassinated in July 1881 by a disgruntled constituent.

Elyot, Sir Thomas (1490?-1546).
London: C. Kegan Paul, 1880. Edited from the First Edition of 1531 by Henry Herbert Stephen Croft. Two volumes. cxcviii, 352p; x, 660p. Illustrated with frontispieces of Sir Thomas and Lady Elyot. Bound by Frost in half brown crushed morocco with cloth sides and marbled endpapers, t.e.g., the spines with gilt titles and panel ornaments. Very fine, and very handsome. Item #16529 This work is known chiefly as the first work on education in English. While it aimed at the education of princes, it was used by the upper classes as a model. "The twofold object of this work was 'to instruct men in such virtues as shall be expedient for them, which shall have authority in a weal public, and to educate those youths that hereafter may be deemed worthy to be governors." (DNB Vol. IV, p. 765). '"Elyot received little reward for his services to the state, but his scholarship and his books were held in high esteem by his contemporaries. The Boke named the Governour was printed by Thomas Berthelet (1531, 1534, 1536, 1544, etc.). It is a treatise on moral philosophy, intended to direct the education of those destined to fill high positions, and to inculcate those moral principles which alone could fit them for the performance of their duties. The subject was a favourite one in the 16th century, and the book, which contained many citations from classical authors, was very popular. Elyot expressly acknowledges his obligations to Erasmus's Institutio Principis Christiani but he makes no reference to the De regno et regis institutione of Francesco Patrizzi (d. 1494), bishop of Gaeta, on which h … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOTI Pierre (Julien Viaud, dit);
Calmann-Lévy, 1880. In-12 (114 x 178 mm). 4 ff. n. ch., 297 pp., 1 p. bl. Pierre Loti". He was moved to write this book by his success in staging performances of classical Indian music's six principal ragas. Tagore's desire to promote wholesome 'family entertainment' in the 19th-century Bengali theatre was another reason: "Such exhibitions, in which everything is national and nothing borrowed – the subject-matters of which are as familiar as household words to every native – which every Bengali lady and hild may see without disapproval, but which ought to be entirely free from those objectionable elements which at present destroy the usefulness of the existing theatre companies." Each incarnation's description is given together with accompanying Sanskrit text and musical notation. [Click Below for Full Description]

Familiar Wild Birds 1880's By W Swaysland x 7 - Edmond Warre (Eton College) These all have the previous owners name inside from which look like being Edmond L Warre who was a well known to Eton college and was a very good rower. Please study photo's to make up your own mind but they all look to be written by the same previous owner. The books themselves include the 1st series from 1883 but the contents pages and numbers on these make the whole collection quite confusing! Possibly should be a second book in the 1st series as only has up to 3/4 of the birds in it, however some of these feature in some of the other editions, they all seem to be around the same era though around 1883 - 1890's ish. The ones that have contents and writing in are state first, second and fourth series, the other 4 I'm not sure, I can't seem to match them up with the 3 books with contents in. Condition is ok, a bit of foxing and some slight damage to one page, please see last couple of photo's. One edition has the covers completely off (the 4th series), please see last photo. This edition doesn't have the correct name on the spine as it has no spine but is marked 'the chapel royal of s george' Hard to work out the numbers but those that are clear are III, VI and V Far from the best conditions but I believe these belonged to Edmond Warre making them very rare copies.
