[BURTON, Richard F.]
London: privately printed [by Bernard Quaritch, 1880]. London: privately printed [by Bernard Quaritch,, 1880]. Quarto in twos. Original yellow paper wrappers, printed in black. Housed in a custom green morocco slipcase and blue moiré silk chemise. The wraps very lightly rubbed, minor chipping, and a short split at the tail of the front wrap, but the spine otherwise uncreased, uncracked and entirely sound, as is the internal binding; an uncommonly bright copy. First edition, first issue, with the title page undated and not naming Bernard Quaritch as the publisher. Penzer believed that the entire first edition probably consisted of no more than 200 copies, most of which was intended for private distribution among Burton's friends, and that the first issue "was very small indeed". Burton claimed the Kasidah to be a translation of a Persian poem, though is really an original work containing a distillation of Sufi thought. It is considered "by far his most notable poetic effort. Unlike most of Burton's compositions, which were hastily written and carelessly (if at all) edited, this is a polished work that contains many fascinating autobiographical insights. Unfortunately, it was perceived as an echo of Edward Fitzgerald's Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam and only half of its print run … was sold, although after Burton's death it became quite popular, going through many editions and long remaining in print" (ODNB). "F.B." was a pseudonym commonly used by Burton, standing for Frank Baker, a combination of his middle name and his mother's maiden name.

Crewes, Charles F.
Cape Town: 1880. Broadside, printed recto only. 11 stanzas of verse. Text double column, with thin vertical rule dividing. Signed in type at conclusion: "Charles F. Crewes. / Cape Town, June 2, 1880. / 42, Adderley-street." At top, an S. Hampton drawn image, 2-9/16" x 6-1/8", depicting Cape Town harbor, with Table Mountain, Devil's Peak & "The Lion" in the background. Lithographed by H. Doree, Burg St., Cape Town. 13-1/8" x 7-7/16". Age toning & spotting to paper. 5 faint horizontal fold-lines. A VG copy. Item #35063 A poetical tribute, "Kingly Mountain, soaring high ... Imperial monarch of the plain!", to this prominent geographical sentinel watching over Cape Town, which, from the earliest to the present day, remains a popular attraction to the populace below. The author a bit of an enigma... Theal records no other works by Crewes, with additional research suggesting he was a Cape Town photographer, having a studio, during the early 1880s, at the broadside's printed address: 42, Adderley-street. With respect to the piece itself, we are unable to find this literary work recorded in any major on-line database, including that of the University of South Africa, nor do we find it in the NUC. A rare 19th C. Cape Town publication.

DEHODENCQ Alfred
Spencer Summerfield Roche
Brooklyn: 1880. Very Good--overall very good condition, one or two volumes have some slight cracking starting at hinges, some slight wear to extremities of boards, but most are in fine condition. Original diaries of Spencer Summerfield Roche (1848-1916), Rector of St. Mark's Protestant Episcopal Church, Adelphi Street, Brooklyn, NY, and Chancellor of the Diocese of Long Island. These are original typewritten diaries, not published books. Typewritten diaries in 17 volumes, finely bound in fine full leather. The diaries are very engaging and straightforwardly written, and range far afield from clerical matters. In fact, the bulk of the diaries have little to do directly with the church, although there is a volume entitled "Founding a Cathedral" on the establishment of St. Mark's, and another 2 or 3 entitled "Anecdotes of Clergy." Roche was instrumental in establishing the St. Mark's Protestant Episcopal Church, which was at 232 Adelphi St. in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Later to become known as Carlton Mews Church, the building still stands and has been converted to luxury apartments. These diaries include cultured and vivid descriptions of European Grand Tour travel, with details of museums, artworks, etc., along with trips within the U.S. to Saratoga Springs (Roche summered there), Newport, the Berkshires. Notes on society, lectures, literature, and art abound, along with anecdotes (many based on personal encounters) of the great figures of the age such as August Belmont, Mark Twain (Roche gives a wonderfully detailed account of a Twain lecture he attended in person), William Ra … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gregg Layne in his Books of the Los Angeles District, describes it as "one of the rarest of that fine early series of California county histories [...] complied from the newspapers of the county from 1854 to 1880, as well as city and county records, and from interviews with many early pioneers." Among the estates and residences depicted is a veritable who's who of notable Angelenos, including those belonging to Mrs. Phineas Banning, Don Manuel Dominguez, J.E. Hollenbeck, H.M. Newhall, John Rowland, and W.H. Workman. Includes a full-page colored rendition of H.H. Lloyd and Co's map of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona and 86 lithographed plates, including two two-panel. 11" x 15"; 192 pp. Original dark brown cloth binding over the original black sheep spine, with gilt titles and decorative blindstamping. Small tears to the extremities of a few pages, with a smudge to the border of the map and the opposing leaf. Ink presentation inscription to the Ebell of Los Angeles from Katherine S. Parker, a longtime member, on the Table of Contents leaf. A short tear to the fore-edge of that leaf has been neatly mended. Two additional mends have been made to the verso of the title page. A pair of unobtrusive Ebell ink stamps appear on the front pastedown. The leather has been archivally refurbished. Light fading al … [Click Below for Full Description]

MILL, John Stuart.
Leipzig: Fues's Verlag (R. Reisland),, 1880. Plato. Arbeiterfrage. Socialismus. Uebersetzt von Siegmund Freud. Octavo (193 x 125 mm). Contemporary black quarter pebbled cloth, patterned paper boards, spine unlettered. Without the series title, as often. Some chips to paper of front board, hinges reinforced with cloth strips at gutter, pencil annotation to top edge of title page, final leaf guarded, contents toned and occasionally faintly foxed, else a very good copy. First edition of Freud's translation into German of Mill's Subjection of Women, considered Freud's "only major non-scientific publication" (Norman exhibition catalogue) and his first publication in book form, issued here as volume twelve of Thomas Gompertz's first complete German edition of Mill's works, which began in 1869 and concluded in 1880. It is the second edition in German of The Subjection of Women; the first, Die Hrigkeit der Frau, appeared in the same year as the first edition in English, 1869. During his year of military service at the age of 24, Freud substituted for Eduard Wessel, the young translator who had died suddenly during the preparation of the twelfth volume. This task was, according to his biographer Ernest Jones, "congenial work, since [Freud] was specially gifted as a translator. Instead of laboriously transcribing from the foreign language, idioms and all, he would read a passage, close the book and consider how a German writer would have clothed the same thoughts - a method not very common among translators" (Life and Work I, pp. 61-2). The Subjection of Women is "the last of [Mil … [Click Below for Full Description]
