Condition: Very Good. Beautiful collection of botanical engravings, circa 1880s. 47 detailed renderings of plant life at the US-Mexican border. Handsomely rebound in 3/4 leather over bevelled boards. 5 raised bands, gilt-bordered and gilt-decorated compartments along the spine. Quarto, lavish marbled endpapers, all edges bright gilt. 37 of the plates profile plant life of the "Cactacaea" genus and are magnificently illustrated by P. Roetter and W.H. Dougal. The other 10 comprise miscellaneous genera and illustrators. With no printing or copyright information to go by, it's difficult to know exactly what we have here but it is possible that these were the best plates from an early Government Printing Office (GPO) publication collected and then rebound into this one volume. The net result, regardless, is very impressive indeed.

1880. Very rare first edition, first issue, of this distillation of Sufi thought, generally considered to have been written by Burton, rather than just translated by him, as claimed on the title page. Penzer speculates that the entire first edition, including first and second issues, did not exceed 200 copies. "Very few of these copies were sold, and the remainder were returned to Burton" (Penzer). Desirable in the original yellow wrappers. Kasidah by Burton 1st/1st is in mostly good condition--see pics. The actual book/pamphlet has the front cover and front page detached though in good condition. The inner sleeve that the pamphlet is encased in has parts that look a little shredded. The outer case has some cracking on the spine.Overall solid condition for a really rare piece. I acquired a private collection and the collector had particular interest in Burton so he had a few copies of Kasidah 1/1 & 1/2. If you are interested in pristine copies, contact me for more details and a generous offer and I may consider selling. As of now, they are too beautiful and rare to let go. FREE SHIPPING London: privately printed [by Bernard Quaritch, 1880], 1880. Quarto in twos. Original yellow paper wrappers, printed in black. First edition, first issue, with the title page undated and not naming Bernard Quaritch as the publisher. [Attributes: First Edition]

Wallace, Lew
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1880. First edition. Original pictorial publisher's cloth binding. A Very Good copy that has been rebacked retaining the original spine, with some cloth repair to crown and foot of spine. Cloth faded and rubbed at extremities; some spotting to boards. Bookplate of Lucy Smith Battson on front endpaper. Title and dedication pages a bit loose at the base but holding; text block tight and square, with only minimal toning. Housed in a custom clamshell with chemise. In all, a pleasing copy of this important work of theological fiction, which was memorialized in film by Charleton Heston. "Betrayed by his best friend and enslaved by the Romans, Judah Ben-Hur seeks revenge but instead finds redemption through his encounters with Jesus. Generations have thrilled to the sacred destiny of the mighty charioteer Ben-Hur, whose enduring tale began as a best-selling 1880 novel that later inspired equally popular stage and film interpretations. Combining the appeal of a historical adventure with a heartfelt message of love and compassion, the story blends the visceral excitement of a quest for vengeance with the spiritual thrill of forgiveness" (Dover). Extensively researched by the author, who sought as much as possible to be accurate in his depictions of galleys, Roman slavery, and leper colonies, it has been admired as much by literary scholars and historians as it has been by readers. "Victorians who swore off novels because of their immoral influence eagerly picked up Ben-Hur--were even encouraged to by their pastors...the book made Lew Wallace a celebrity" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Omaha: E.H. & M. Mortimer Printers, 1880., 1880. First edition. 8 1/8" x 6" in tan printed wrappers. 42 pp. "We are apt to look upon Nebraska as a young state; young in its geological formation, in its political existence, and in its historical records. For descriptions of its soil, its climate, its fruits, or its inhabitants, few have sought to look further back than the commencement of the present century, and the published memorials of its history prior to the advent of the French trappers and traders have thought too meagre to serve as a basis for any exact account. But hidden away in the lumber rooms of wealthy Spanish and French families, and piled on the shelves of national libraries in Paris, Madrid, and Mexico, are hosts of letters, journals, and reports which are gradually emerging from their seclusion and undergoing the scrutiny of acute and practiced eyes. The documents recently edited by M. Margry, in Paris, and now in course of publication by the United States government, throw a flood of light upon early French discoveries and explorations in the West. And when the vast libraries of all the nations which took part in those adventurous travels shall give up their dead treasures, we have reason to hope that we shall be able to add many years to the authentic history of our state." In this speech, the author presents a few of the reasons to believe that Spanish explorers visited present-day Nebraska 80 years before the Pilgrims landed. In his presentation he explores the origin of the "seven cities of Cibola" and the early Spanish explorers, including Coronado. … [Click Below for Full Description]

1880. Very Good. Set of 11 mounted albumen prints from the 19th century, depicting scenes from Dakota Territory including Groton and surrounding area, which would become Brown County, South Dakota. No photographer or publication information present. Albumen prints are on dark brown mounts with gilt edges and measure 7 ¾" x 4 ½" (with mounts 8 ½" x 5 ¼"); most views have notes in black ink on verso of mount, giving a brief description of the scene. Views are detailed, crisp, and in very good condition. All have light wear to edges and light soiling, some have light yellowing. The content of these views are fabulous. Views depict the main street of Groton, Dakota looking north from the rail depot, signs can be read and people seen milling about the stores; a railway depot with the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul in the background; household goods and large piles of lumber stacked alongside the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railcars, stashed there while settlers chose a home site; the residence of W.J. Brewster, a pioneer of Brown County, who settled in the area in the early 1880s and was reported to be a harness dealer; two men, Jim and Will, cleaning out a well; the well is again seen nearby a "shanty" also called rose cottage or "Sodom"; a couple views depict a small shed or barn with Will feeding a calf; three views depict Will, Jim and H.D.B. plowing with oxen and harrow. Many white settlers started to arrive in what is now Brown County, South Dakota in the early 1880s and were eager to establish themselves. As seen in a co … [Click Below for Full Description]

1866-1868. (copie vers 1880?). MANUSCRIT in-folio. 39ff.

Die reiche Bildsymbolik (u. a. Benjamin Tyler
New York: Giles Lithographic, 1880. Facsimile. Good condition for age. No rips or tears. Wrinkles and fold marks but overall very good condition! Original metal trim on top and bottom printed on parchment. What a find! On parchment with original metal trim at top and bottom measuring approximately 20" X 27" . Here we have an original Giles Lithographic Declaration of Independence which was created in 1880 for the Duke Tobacco Company as a premium for Duke Tobbaco products and could only be obtained by collecting certificates from 75 packets of Duke Products which makes it extremely rare! This print was made from the famous Benjamin Owen Tyler facsimile of the Declaration of Independence. Tyler's documents are among the most sought after printings of the Declaration and have sold for as much as $35,000. It is believed by some though that the Giles Lithographic version made for Duke which we have here is scarcer than the Tyler version. Only two copies are known to have sold at auction, one for $1,024 in 2009 and one for $7,995 in 2011. I found this at an auction rolled in a very old "Robinson Livestock" tube (see pictures) among old USGS Maps of Idaho dating to the late 1800's and early 1900s. I believe it has been rolled in this tube for a very long time. I am including the tube with the auction but not the maps. I am starting bidding at $4,900 and if no sale I will list as "Buy It now" for $4,900 so don't miss your chance to get this rare gem now! If you would like any additional pictures or videos of this piece please let me know. I don't much more more about this other … [Click Below for Full Description]
