Adams, S.C.
Salem, Or: Mrs. A.L. Stinson, 1880. About very good.. 44pp. Original blue printed wrappers. Wrappers faded; presentation inscription on front cover; some light wear and soiling. Lightly creased. Internally clean. Unrecorded religious work printed by a woman printer in Salem, Oregon in 1880. Sarah Watt Stinson, or Mrs. A.L. Stinson and she was known professionally, was thirty-seven when her husband dropped dead from a heart attack in the streets of Salem in 1879. A.L. Stinson is credited with bringing the first rolling press to Salem, and his widow and their son took over the business upon his death. Despite that, we find little record of her printing output in OCLC, possibly because most of it was small job work. The present work, a religious tract concerning the covenants of the Old and New Testaments, is inscribed "Compliments of the Author" on the front cover. It seems likely that it was printed in a small number, as we find no evidence of it institutionally. A rare and interesting piece of Pacific Northwest printing history.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Garfield, J. A. [James Abram]
np, 1880. Fine - clean, collectible.. SIGNED "J A Garfield / Nov 2, 1880" with authentication note on verso, "written on his day of election - & very first rate for President / C. Hines" The uniqueness of this card is that it was signed on Garfield's election day to the position of President of the United States. Garfield, the 20th President, lasted just 200 days, March 4, 1881, until his death on September 19, 1881, as a result of being shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881. Includes period cabinet card by Chapman, Smith with advertising on the rear. James A. Garfield, (Nov 19, 1831 - Sep 19, 1881) was nominated on the 36th ballot of the Republican Convention as a compromise candidate. He was a Union General during the Civil War serving with distinction at the battles of Shiloh and Chickamauga. Elected to Congress from Ohio in 1862, he is the only President to be elected as sitting Congressman. In his very short tenure he was a reformer and anti-corruption crusader. "Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption." - James A. Garfield.

ALMA-TADEMA, SIR LAWRENCE
STRIGILS AND SPONGES Ets vervaardigd in 1880 door Paul Rajon naar de aquarel van Lawrence Alma-Tadema (Opus CXCVII). In potlood gesigneerd door Alma-Tadema en Rajon. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm (druk): 38 x 22,6 cm.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Shipped with USPS Priority Mail and insurance. Extra info.: First edition, second issue; 4to, pp. [4], 33; original yellow printed wrappers--very good copy. Penzer, noting that the yellow wrappers contained a printed half-title, is frequently misinterpreted as suggesting that there is a half-title page. This is not the case. There is no half-title page, only the half-title as printed on the front wrapper. The first two issues of this title were published by Bernard Quaritch, the first issue omits the Quaritch name and the date from the title. The two issues together did not comprise more than 200 copies, "and Messrs. Quaritch state that under a hundred were sold." Ostensibly translated by Burton, he in fact was its author; written in 1857 under his nom-de-plume Hâjî Abdû Al-Yazdi but it was not published until 1880 by Quaritch. [Attributes: First Edition]

Wyld, James
1880. Map of Upper Canada extending from Quebec to Lake Huron. As a result of its victory over France in the Seven Years’ War (1754-63), Britain acquired all North American land east of the Mississippi river, which included most of Canada and New France. The region north of the Thirteen Colonies was then named Quebec and remained largely French-speaking. Following the American Revolution, numerous British Loyalists fled north from the United States and settled in Canada, significantly changing the demographics of the region. The Constitutional Act of 1791 separated Quebec into two provinces along the Ottawa River predominantly English-speaking Upper Canada in the west and the French-speaking Lower Canada in the east. They remained separate provinces until the Union Act of 1841, which created the United Province of Canada. The Act was a direct result of large-scale rebellions (1837-8) which had swept across the provinces in response to the British colonial authorities’ rejection of the desire by settlers for responsible government. A small number of the rebels were later arrested and transported to Van Diemen’s Land and New South Wales. 570mm x 865mm (22.44" x 34.06")
