Les Dialogues du divin Pietro Aretino. Entièrement et littéralement traduits pour la première fois [puis : ] Dialogues de Pietro Aretino.

Paris, Isidore Liseux, Londres, (Paris, Liseux), 1879-1880. UKASE. WE COMMAND ALL NATIONS TO KEEP THE PEACE. DR. J. H. McLEAN'S PEACE-MAKERS ... Dr. James Henry McLean, of St. Louis, Mo., Projector, Inventor and Patentee, with Myron Coloney, of New Haven, Conn., Mechanical Inventor and Patentee

New York: Baker & Godwin, Printers, 25 Park Row, 1880.. Large octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-200, inserted frontispiece (portrait of McLean), approximately 75 wood-engraved illustrations in the text, many full page, original pebbled plum cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in black, brown coated endpapers. First edition. An elaborate, profusely illustrated antiwar tract in the form of a satirical manufacturer's trade catalogue offering powerful military ordnance -- "peace-makers" -- which will make "war so terrible and devastating as to shock every community and cause them to rise en masse and declare that the slaughter of their fellows must cease!" (author's dedication). The author was a successful peddler of patent medicines in the St. Louis area, and, as Riling points out (see below) the style of the book, with its frequent bold headlines, is that of a patent medicine brochure. The imagined guns, torpedoes, forts etc. are not overtly fantastic, just bigger, faster, more powerful, more portable. With the impeccably drawn illustrations and confident writing style, the effect is not comically exaggerated so much as insidiously realistic, putting this production in the tradition -- so important in the nineteenth century -- of the eccentric hoax. Riling 1070. Publisher's 4-page illustrated prospectus laid in. Author's signed compliments slip affixed to the front paste-down. Cloth lightly flecked, spine panel just a bit sunned, a very good, internally fine copy. (#153271)

STRANGE STORIES FROM A CHINESE STUDIO. Translated and Annotated by Herbert A. Giles ..

London: Thos. de la Rue & Co., 1880.. Octavo, two volumes: pp. [i-vii] viii-xi [xii-xiii] xiv-xxxii [1] 2-432; [i-iv] [1] 2-404, rebound in quarter green cloth and marbled boards. First edition of this translation. The first publication in English of an extensive selection of stories from the classic collection of Chinese stories of the supernatural. Translations of 164 stories from the LIAO-CHAI CHIH-YI based on the Chinese text published by Tan Ming-lun in 1842, collated with the edition of Yü Chi published in 1766. The LIAO-CHAI could be called, in terms of scope and influence, though not style, the 1001 Nights of China. P'u Sung-ling (1640-1715) collected about 500 supernatural tales throughout China during his lifetime. P'u is believed to have completed the majority of the tales about 1679, though he may have added stories as late as 1707. He was too poor to publish his work, but it was circulated in manuscript before it was published posthumously. Sources differ in their account of the year of publication. One source claims the LIAO-CHAI was published by P'u's grandson in 1740. However, the earliest surviving print version was printed in 1766 in Hangzhou. One of the best original-language editions was that of Tan Ming-lun, published in 1842 in sixteen small octavo volumes of about 160 pages each. Before Giles's collection only fifteen of these stories had been published in English versions. Giles (1845-1935) served as a British diplomat in China during most of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, then took a post as professor of Chinese at Cambridge. He was an eminent Sinologist and his translations are careful and copiously annotated, though sometimes a little dry. The stories are often wildly imaginative, with motifs and themes distinctively Oriental. What is perhaps most remarkable is that, although generally very short, the stories never feel abbreviated or sketchy. Modern selections and translations in English have appeared under many different titles. Critics have called Giles's Victorian era translations "prudish" and they have been dismissed as "orientalist bowdlerizations." (These same criticisms apply to more modern translations as well.) Historically, a very important pioneer work. See John Minford and Tong Man, "Whose Strange Stories? P'u Sung-ling (1640-1715), Herbert Giles (1845-1935), and the Liao-chai chih-yi," East Asian History, June/December 1999, numbers 17/18, pp. 1-48. Bleiler (1978), p. 82. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). A very good copy. A rare book. (#150886)

        Monsieur Lecoq

Estes and Lauriat, Boston 1880 - Incredibly rare book, with clean pages and clear text. Gilt titles on green cloth, with light rubbing on spine and inner front hinge partially cracked – otherwise beautiful condition. Gaboriau was a pioneer in the detective fiction genre, and influenced later detective fiction writers, notably Conan Doyle, among others. This is his first novel featuring Monsieur Lecoq, private detective. A stunning book dated 1880! [Attributes: Hard Cover]

On the Photographic Spectra of Stars", offprint from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Volume 171, 1880, pp 669-690

FIRST EDITION. SCARCE AND NEAR FINE OFFPRINT IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF HUGGINS'S DETAILED 1880 FOLLOWUP TO HIS VISIONARY BUT PRELIMINARY 1876 PAPER ON THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF STAR SPECTRA. INCLUDED IS A CUT SIGNATURE OF HUGGINS'S ABOVE WHICH IS PRINTED HIS ADDRESS IN LONDON; further still, the words "From the Author" are inscribed on the front wrapper of the offprint in a hand that clearly appears to be Huggins's (see image of note from Huggins's included only for the sake of comparison; specifically, the word 'the' is identical in both). In 1876 the author presented "a preliminary note on the subject of this paper, together with a diagram of the spectrum of Vega compared with that of the sun." (Proceedings 30, 1879, 20). The invention of a more perfect driving clock by Grubb enabled Huggins to resume his work with greater success. In the paper offered here, Huggins describes in far greater detail "the special apparatus and the methods of working which have been employed", both amplifying and expanding the earlier work (ibid). "In 1868, English astronomer Sir William Huggins (1824-1910) was the first to apply spectroscopy and the Doppler shift (described elsewhere) to estimate the motion of the Solar System relative to the stars. He found that the Earth was receding from Sirius by about 29 miles per second after compensating for the effect of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Huggins did not determine how much of the proper motion was attributable to our Solar System and how much to the star" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). CONDITION & DETAILS: Offprint issue in original wraps. Large Quarto. 13 by 9.5 inches (325 x 237mm). pp. 669-690. Large fold-out plate. Near fine condition; very slight soiling to the wraps. Both the offprint and the cut signature are housed in a custom quarter morocco and cloth clamshell box, gilt-lettered and -ruled at the spine; black lettered on the front board. Further images available upon request.

A monograph of the Nectariniidae, or family of Sun-Birds

published by the author, 1880. With 121 hand-colored lithographic plates by J.G. Keuelmans. Half-crushed morocco, gilt edges, covers spotted, spine a bit faded; occasional light scattered spotting, some offsetting to text leaves, but overall a wonderful copy from the library of K.A. Baird with his ownership inscription dated 1925 on the paste-down. First edition of one of the most attractively illustrated of Keulemans' works, limited to 250 copies. In the preface, Shelley acknowledges the contributions of Keuleman (1842-1912) and praises his illustrations for their accuracy and artistry, specifically pointing out that Keuleman's notes on sunbirds at Prince's Island were incorporated into the text. "An excellent monograph of an interesting family of birds, with descriptions in Latin and English, critical notes, and discussions of habits, etc., from accounts by many different observers. A total of 138 species of the group are recognized" (Zimmer, II, 588). Shelley (1840-1910), geologist and ornithologist, was the nephew of Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Vollständige Reihe der Schubert'schen naturgeschichtlichen Tafelwerke (zur Zoologie, Botanik, Geologie & Paläontologie sowie Humanbiologie) aus dem Verlag Schreibers. Zusammen 4 Bände.

Esslingen, ohne Jahr, aber um 1880.. Folio. Illustiertes Org.-Ganz- bzw. Moritz Willkomm (Botanik) oder G. A. Kenngott (Mineralogie).

        Leaves of Grass

Thayer and Eldridge, Boston 1880 - Third Edition, very good in publisher's original pebbled purple cloth with some wear to head & heel of spine. (The first two, shorter and anonymous, editions were self-published, 1855 and 1856.) States to title page "Year 85 of the States (1860-1861)" but now presumed to be the third (previously thought to be the second) -- and the first unauthorized -- printing of the third, Thayer and Eldridge edition. This is indicated by the absence here of the printer's or electrotypesetter's imprints to the copyright-page, where the 1860 copyright notice now stands naked. (See Myerson, "Walt Whitman a Descriptive Bibliography," A2.3.c, calling it the third printing; or BAL 21397, calling it the second printing.) This later printing thus presumed to be post-1879. Beveled boards with blindstamps of globe, clouds and title to front board, sunrise and title to rear board. Gilt title to spine. Device of butterfly resting on finger also blindstamped to spine. Engraved, elegant frontispiece portrait lovely but lacking tissue guard, if it ever had one. Contents begin with the "Proto-Leaf" on page 5, as they should. 456 pp. with NO advertising matter at rear. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
