Terrestrial table globe - Jan Felkl, c. 1880.

SMALL TERRESTRIAL TABLE GLOBE WITH STANLEY?S NEW DISCOVERIES IN THE CONGO?Aardglobe naar de Nieuwste Bronnen bewerkt door W.J. Geerling. Fabriek van J. Felkl. te Praag?, small (16 cm) terrestrial globe with 12 gores produced in Prague by Jan Felkl c. 1880. Lithographed in black and two shades of blue, with Asia, Australia, the Americas and parts of Antarctica outlined in red. With a brass meridian ring graduated in degrees and a brass pointer at the north pole (dial lacking), in a contemporary four-legged wooden base with central support, the horizon ring with a facsimile of a contemporary paper horizon ring pasted on it.A charming little globe, produced in Prague for the Dutch market by Jan Felkl (1817-1887) with the assistance of W.J. Geerling of Arnhem. Schools formed a large part of Felkl?s market, though the globes sold to schools are not distinguished from those sold to others. Since Felkl left Prague for Rostok in 1870 and traded as Felkl & Sohn from 1875, the plates for the present globe must have been made no later than 1870. Africa shows the results of Henry Morton Stanley?s exploration of the Congo in the years 1874 to 1877, so the plates must have been updated. It depicts the upper Congo accurately, reduces the old elongated Lake Albert to its proper extent and perhaps attempts to depict what are now lakes Edward and George. The presence of Transvaal Republic in South Africa suggests a date before its annexation by England in 1881.Condition: professional repair of a 1 cm hole in the Atlantic Ocean, east of West Indies, and a few minor scuffs, but still in good condition overall. A nice little globe from the famous firm of Felkl in Prague.Price: ?3.000,-.

In addition to its array of in-text illustrations, it is decorated with => 18 engraved plates (15 of which are double-sided) done by various hands after designs by Gustave Doré, Leonardo da Vinci, and others; the count includes => two double-sided illuminated leaves for a certificate of matrimony and for marriage, birth, and death records (all left blank here).    Binding: Publisher's brown pebbled roan, covering thick papier-mâché covers done in a distinctly three-dimensional style: covers with bevelled edges, the surface separated into eight panels separated by wide and deeply incised borders of smooth leather surrounding a central title cartouche; the panels in relief ruled in blind and ornately gilt-stamped with floral, foliate, and cross motifs. All edges gilt. Endpapers of white moiré-patterned paper.         Hills 1942. Binding as above (Holman's style 14B), mildly rubbed overall, joints and hinges predictably tender. Frontispiece separated, first few leaves starting to separate also. One piece of dried plant matter and one small paper cherub laid in. Two leaves with short edge tears, without loss of text; one plate with short tear from lower edge, not touching image. Slight age-toning and very occasional faint spotting, two pages with small area of offsetting from now-absent laid-in slip, pages otherwise clean. => A pleasing example of its kind.

The Biblia Naturae is the finest collection of microscopical observations ever produced by one worker ... The book is consulted by naturalists to this day. Some of the figures have never been excelled ..." (Singer). The scarce original edition with Latin and Dutch text printed in double columns. "Despite a scientific career that lasted only a dozen years, Swammerdam was one of the oustanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove still-current Aristotelian notions (which he opposed upon religious grounds) that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis (sudden and complete transformation) and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of microdissection and injection to the point where he could use them on the smallest and most delicate anatomical parts, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs and to demonstrate the gradual development of an insect's adult form throughout all its larval stages. These observations are 'indubitable the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects' (Cole, p. 285). In addition Swammerdam performed valuable investigations of crustaceans, mollusks and frogs, and was the first to prove experimentally that muscles do not increase in bulk when contracted via nerve stimulation. "The 'Biblia naturae', Swammerdam's major work, was published fifty-five years after his death by Hermann Boerhave ... the fifty-three copperplates were prepared under Swammerdam's direction from his own drawings" (Haskell F. Norman Library of Science & Medicine, 2037)

Original brown cloth, titles to spine gilt, frame and design to upper board in black, to lower board in blind. Two ownership inscriptions in pencil and ink on front free endpaper and the half-title. First trade edition, originally published in a privately printed edition of 200 copies in 1879. "The most influential of American works on economics, this book gave its author an international reputation as prophet and reformer. He proposed to abolish poverty and secure fair distribution of the rewards of labor by appropriating all economic rent by taxation, and abolishing all taxation except upon land values. Today the slogan of the single tax still unites the followers of Henry George" (Grolier, One hundred influential American books printed before 1900, no. 81).
