Schattentheater mit beweglichen Figuren. Eine lustige Unterhaltung für Jung und Alt.

Format: 46,5/32/3,5 cm. Farbig lithographierter Original-Karton.

        The White Ship

Written in brown ink to rectos of 19 ruled leaves, signed and dated 'D.G. Rossetti: 1880' at end, a little spotting, contemporary plain green wrappers, 202 x 162 mm, top edge gilt, bound in contemporary gilt-lettered polished calf with oval arabesque design to centre of both covers, marbled endpapers and small armorial bookplate of the Boyds of Penkill to front pastedown, 4to. 'The ballad retells the story of the death of Henry I's son and heir, when his ship went down with all aboard on 25 November 1120 as it was sailing from France to England ... The poem was completed around 26 April 1880, but undoubtedly started much earlier, perhaps as early as 1873, certainly by 1878. Fragments for the ballad appear in a number of Rossetti's note books from those years. On 12 April 1880 he showed William Michael Rossetti some of his preliminary work on the ballad and told him he was "inclined to take it up again". Three manuscripts of the poem survive: a draft manuscript in Duke University Library; a first fair copy in Yale's Beinecke Library; and a second fair copy (printer's copy), in the British Library' (RossettiArchive.org). To the census of fair copies can now be added this third manuscript, formerly in the possession of Alice Boyd (1825-1897), 14th Laird of Penkill Castle, where Rossetti was a regular visitor. Both the draft manuscript (T.J. Wise/Ashley Library copy) and the Beinecke Library copy are written on 70 numbered, and slightly taller, pages. The ballad was first published in 'Ballads and Sonnets' (1881), and collected thereafter. Three textual variations between this copy and the Yale copy have been identified: line 46 first word is 'But' in this copy, the draft, BL and first printed editions, 'Yet' in Yale copy; line 220: 'The King had watched' in draft, Yale, BL and first published edition, but 'The King had sat' in this copy; line 236: 'When the sea-mew' is the text seen in all copies except here where it is, perhaps uniquely, 'When the sea-bird'. A handsome and distinctive manuscript from the British poet, illustrator, translator and painter who co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with Holman-Hunt and Millais, thus changing the attitudes to art and aesthetics of an entire nation for generations to come.

UKASE. WE COMMAND ALL NATIONS TO KEEP THE PEACE. DR. J. H. McLEAN'S PEACE-MAKERS ... Dr. James Henry McLean, of St. Louis, Mo., Projector, Inventor and Patentee, with Myron Coloney, of New Haven, Conn., Mechanical Inventor and Patentee

New York: Baker & Godwin, Printers, 25 Park Row, 1880.. Large octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-200, inserted frontispiece (portrait of McLean), approximately 75 wood-engraved illustrations in the text, many full page, original pebbled plum cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in black, brown coated endpapers. First edition. An elaborate, profusely illustrated antiwar tract in the form of a satirical manufacturer's trade catalogue offering powerful military ordnance -- "peace-makers" -- which will make "war so terrible and devastating as to shock every community and cause them to rise en masse and declare that the slaughter of their fellows must cease!" (author's dedication). The author was a successful peddler of patent medicines in the St. Louis area, and, as Riling points out (see below) the style of the book, with its frequent bold headlines, is that of a patent medicine brochure. The imagined guns, torpedoes, forts etc. are not overtly fantastic, just bigger, faster, more powerful, more portable. With the impeccably drawn illustrations and confident writing style, the effect is not comically exaggerated so much as insidiously realistic, putting this production in the tradition -- so important in the nineteenth century -- of the eccentric hoax. Riling 1070. Publisher's 4-page illustrated prospectus laid in. Author's signed compliments slip affixed to the front paste-down. Cloth lightly flecked, spine panel just a bit sunned, a very good, internally fine copy. (#153271)

        Advance and Retreat

1880. First Edition . HOOD, John Bell. Advance and Retreat. Personal Experiences in the United States and Confederate Armies. New Orleans: G.T. Beauregard, 1880. Octavo, original three-quarter brown morocco, raised bands, marbled boards. $1600.First edition of this dramatic Confederate memoir, with two full-page engraved portraits and four maps, one folding, scarce in publisher's original three-quarter morocco.Hood's memoir focuses on his Confederate service, from his early involvement at Second Manassas and Sharpsburg to his surrender at Natchez, Mississippi. Though much admired as a divisional and corps commander, Hood's aggressive tendencies helped to seal the fate of the Confederacy at the Battle of Atlanta. Hood took over army command after Johnston's removal and decided to move his troops from their well-entrenched positions in and around Atlanta to attack Sherman's numerically superior forces. The resulting rout broke the last Southern stronghold and freed the way for Sherman's infamous march to the sea. Of Advance and Retreat, Freeman wrote in The South to Posterity, ""This is a genuinely tragic book, brave and bitter, wistful and manly, touched with humor in the early chapters, grim in its recountal of the circumstances which defeated his final plan of operations."" Tall Cotton 93. Eicher 240. Wright 1051. Howes H622. Interior fresh with light foxing, only tiny bit of marginal dampstaining, front inner hinge expertly repaired. An extremely good copy.

A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF WILLIAM B. IDE: WITH A MINUTE AND INTERESTING ACCOUNT OF ONE OF THE LARGEST EMIGRATING COMPANIES, (3000 MILES OVER LAND), FROM THE EAST TO THE PACIFIC COAST. AND WHAT IS CLAIMED AS THE MOST AUTHENTIC AND RELIABLE ACCOUNT OF "THE VIRTUAL CONQUEST OF CALIFORNIA, IN JUNE, 1846, BY THE BEAR FLAG PARTY," AS GIVEN BY ITS LEADER, THE LATE HON. WILLIAM BROWN IDE

      N. P: Published for the Subscribers, [1880]., 1880. First edition. First edition. 16mo. Original quarter leather and cloth. raised bands on the spine, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, 239 [1] pp., preface. Ide's account of his brother's life is of great interest for two reasons: 1). It contains one of only a small handful of overland journals written from a woman's point of view (Chapters III - IV), and 2). and is also the only volume published thus far that deals exclusively with an important incident of California history, the Bear Flag Revolt (Chapter V - XVIII). Howes I4 says "The original edition printed on a hand press by the author at 86 years of age was probably small." Streeter Sale V 2967 says "Compiled .... by Simon Ide for the children of his brother and at their expense." Zamorano Eighty 45 says "Copies are now extremely rare." Cowan page 118 says "William B. Ide, the leader of the Bear Flag movement at Sonoma, has received criticisms from many sources, but according to Hubert Howe Bancroft he was a worthy and honest man. His death occurred in California in 1852. This work was set in type by Simon Ide when in his 86th year. Having apparently been issued among difficulties, only a small number was printed and the work is scarce." William B Ide's daughter, who was 18 when she accompanied him from Illinois to California in 1845 provides a classic western experience, to be viewed from a woman's point of view. For example, she describes the rude life and manners of the company's pilot and his son and notes "I was more afraid of these two men than of the wild Indians." Former owner's inked name and date on the front fly leaf, else a fine, bright, tight copy of an important and rare book.

STRANGE STORIES FROM A CHINESE STUDIO. Translated and Annotated by Herbert A. Giles ..

London: Thos. de la Rue & Co., 1880.. Octavo, two volumes: pp. [i-vii] viii-xi [xii-xiii] xiv-xxxii [1] 2-432; [i-iv] [1] 2-404, rebound in quarter green cloth and marbled boards. First edition of this translation. The first publication in English of an extensive selection of stories from the classic collection of Chinese stories of the supernatural. Translations of 164 stories from the LIAO-CHAI CHIH-YI based on the Chinese text published by Tan Ming-lun in 1842, collated with the edition of Yü Chi published in 1766. The LIAO-CHAI could be called, in terms of scope and influence, though not style, the 1001 Nights of China. P'u Sung-ling (1640-1715) collected about 500 supernatural tales throughout China during his lifetime. P'u is believed to have completed the majority of the tales about 1679, though he may have added stories as late as 1707. He was too poor to publish his work, but it was circulated in manuscript before it was published posthumously. Sources differ in their account of the year of publication. One source claims the LIAO-CHAI was published by P'u's grandson in 1740. However, the earliest surviving print version was printed in 1766 in Hangzhou. One of the best original-language editions was that of Tan Ming-lun, published in 1842 in sixteen small octavo volumes of about 160 pages each. Before Giles's collection only fifteen of these stories had been published in English versions. Giles (1845-1935) served as a British diplomat in China during most of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, then took a post as professor of Chinese at Cambridge. He was an eminent Sinologist and his translations are careful and copiously annotated, though sometimes a little dry. The stories are often wildly imaginative, with motifs and themes distinctively Oriental. What is perhaps most remarkable is that, although generally very short, the stories never feel abbreviated or sketchy. Modern selections and translations in English have appeared under many different titles. Critics have called Giles's Victorian era translations "prudish" and they have been dismissed as "orientalist bowdlerizations." (These same criticisms apply to more modern translations as well.) Historically, a very important pioneer work. See John Minford and Tong Man, "Whose Strange Stories? P'u Sung-ling (1640-1715), Herbert Giles (1845-1935), and the Liao-chai chih-yi," East Asian History, June/December 1999, numbers 17/18, pp. 1-48. Bleiler (1978), p. 82. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). A very good copy. A rare book. (#150886)

On the Photographic Spectra of Stars", offprint from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Volume 171, 1880, pp 669-690

FIRST EDITION. SCARCE AND NEAR FINE OFFPRINT IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF HUGGINS'S DETAILED 1880 FOLLOWUP TO HIS VISIONARY BUT PRELIMINARY 1876 PAPER ON THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF STAR SPECTRA. INCLUDED IS A CUT SIGNATURE OF HUGGINS'S ABOVE WHICH IS PRINTED HIS ADDRESS IN LONDON; further still, the words "From the Author" are inscribed on the front wrapper of the offprint in a hand that clearly appears to be Huggins's (see image of note from Huggins's included only for the sake of comparison; specifically, the word 'the' is identical in both). In 1876 the author presented "a preliminary note on the subject of this paper, together with a diagram of the spectrum of Vega compared with that of the sun." (Proceedings 30, 1879, 20). The invention of a more perfect driving clock by Grubb enabled Huggins to resume his work with greater success. In the paper offered here, Huggins describes in far greater detail "the special apparatus and the methods of working which have been employed", both amplifying and expanding the earlier work (ibid). "In 1868, English astronomer Sir William Huggins (1824-1910) was the first to apply spectroscopy and the Doppler shift (described elsewhere) to estimate the motion of the Solar System relative to the stars. He found that the Earth was receding from Sirius by about 29 miles per second after compensating for the effect of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Huggins did not determine how much of the proper motion was attributable to our Solar System and how much to the star" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). CONDITION & DETAILS: Offprint issue in original wraps. Large Quarto. 13 by 9.5 inches (325 x 237mm). pp. 669-690. Large fold-out plate. Near fine condition; very slight soiling to the wraps. Both the offprint and the cut signature are housed in a custom quarter morocco and cloth clamshell box, gilt-lettered and -ruled at the spine; black lettered on the front board. Further images available upon request.

"... the most completely sustained of all her longer tales, A BELEAGUERED CITY stands at the peak of Oliphant's art. Written fifteen years after the shock of her daughter's death, it underscores the obsessive concerns of her supernatural fiction, almost all of which presents in dramatic form the insistent hope and prayer that beyond this life there is a territory of the Unseen, where the Dead are enabled to work out their ultimate Christianized salvation, and these Dead continue to care for us who remain here in the Seen, though they may be able to communicate only with innocents and children." - Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, pp. 263-4.
