        The Sea Fogs - 1st Edition/1st Printing

Nawakum Press. Fine+. First Edition; First Printing. A handsome first edition/first printing in fine condition. The book is 32 pages and measures 6 -1/4 by 10-3/4 inches. The typeface is Ehrhardt, with Isadora for display. Patrick Reagh cast the type and printed the book on Zerkall Frankfurt at his shop in Sebastopol, California. Illustrations printed letterpress, with color triptych printed digitally at Black Cat Studio. The binding and slipcases were produced by Lisa Van Pelt. The Sea Fogs is published in one state, in an edition of 55 slipcased copies, each numbered and signed by the artist. ; 'The Sea Fogs' is the tenth of fourteen episodes - narratives, character sketches, and extended moments - that make up Scottish novelist, essayist, and poet Robert Louis Stevenson's The Silverado Squatters. It is drawn from Stevenson's journal, which he kept while on a two-month stay on Mount St. Helena, at the head of the Napa Valley in California. He had come to the area for his honeymoon in 1880, and for his health as well, hoping to get away from the damp, coastal climate of San Francisco. Unable to afford the ten dollars a week for a room at the local hotel, he and his bride instead “squatted” an old bunkhouse, at an abandoned silver mine on the side of the mountain. On a fine June morning Stevenson found himself awakening to, and then writing about, a local natural occurrence- fogs drawn inland from the Pacific Ocean. Stevenson scholar Roger G. Swearingen, through his introduction, shares with the reader just how a younger Stevenson, surrendering himself completely to this highly personal story, was fully in command of his art long before penning his most famous works. And how this wonderful, self contained, stand-alone piece is among Stevenson's finest of this kind; 32 pages; Signed by Author .

        LIFE OF WILLIAM BLAKE.

      - With selections from his poems and other writings. A New and Enlarged Edition illustrated from Blake\rquote s own Works. With additional Letters and a Memoir of the Author. In two volumes. Pp. xxiv+432(last colophon)+xii+384(last colophon), frontispiece portrait to both volumes, plus 62 plates (engravings, monochromes, and woodcuts, one double page, 3 with tissue guards), text illustrations (2 full page), descriptive catalogue, index; later (but not recent) binding by De Coverly & Sons in half dark blue morocco, spines lettered and ruled in gilt compartments between raised bands, blue/grey cloth boards; a.e.g.; marbled endpapers; with the original pictorial dust wrapper (a trifle cropped) bound in at front of Volume I; small surface graze at foot of upper pastedown Volume I, a couple of tiny edge chips or splits, some light offsetting from the illustrations, a little light foxing (mainly outer leaves) and occasional slight soiling; Macmillan and Co., London, 1880. Second edition. Bentley, \i Blake Books 1680B. *First published in 1863, Gilchrist's magnum opus became the foundation for Blake study. Volume II, edited by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, is a compilation of Blake's poetry, prose, and art, including reproductions of illustrations from public and private collections and from his illuminated books. Gilchrist spent years compiling the material and interviewing Blake's surviving friends. Following his sudden death in 1861, the book was completed by his widow, Anne Gilchrist, with assistance from the Rossetti brothers. The illustrations include prints from Blake's \i Virgil woodblocks and from electrotypes made from the original copperplates of the\i Songs of Innocence and of Experience . The second edition is considered more desirable, because it contains revisions and additional material, including 34 new letters from Blake to William Hayley, and some new illustrations, with some of the plates on India paper. 1500 copies were printed (five hundred fewer than the first edition). The striking dust wrapper design (which also featured on the original boards, not retained in this set) is by Frederic Shields (1833-1911), an associate of the Pre-Raphaelites and a friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Suggested by Rossetti, and based on a sketch [by Blake's brother Robert] in Blake's \i Notebook (then in Rossetti's possession), with a figure from one of Blake\rquote s designs for Young's \i Night Thoughts on the back panel, it is an early example of Art Nouveau design - and a scarce early dust wrapper. The binder of this set, Roger de Coverly (1831-1914) began his career as an apprentice at Zaehnsdorf\rquote s, then worked for J. & J. Leighton before establishing his own workshop. T. J. Cobden-Sanderson (later of the Doves Press and bindery) served a short apprenticeship with De Coverley in the mid-1880s. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

His childhood on a small Wiltshire farm had a great influence on him and provides the background to all his major works of fiction. The Gamekeeper At Home is probably his best known work, truly reflecting those by-gone days when the Gamekeeper was a vital part of rural activities. He discusses the man himself and how he fits into the community and examines his relations with his family. His area of activity is covered - the fields, the woods, the meadows and the ponds and streams. The world around him needs protection from the predators that kill the game and disturb the balance of nature. There is contact with his dogs and other animals such as rabbits and deer as well as the traditional enemies such as the fox. All parts are brought together so the reader can sense the activity of the countryside and the efforts to keep its integral parts operating in harmony. This understanding is enhanced by the masterly drawings by Charles Whymper.Charles Whymper (1853-1941), was a prolific book illustrator specializing in travel, animal, and hunting themes.

Bel exemplaire.

Full dark green morocco, covers with elaborate gilt pointille decoration surrounding a fox, a dog, a trout and a partridge in the corners (front cover also lettered in gilt), spine with five raised bands, elaborately tooled in gilt with sporting devices and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt ruled board edges and elaborate gilt turn-ins, pale green silk liners and end-leaves, all edged gilt. The rear liner with the Zaehnsdorf 'Exhibition' stamp in black. Upper and lower extremities of front joint expertly and almost invisibly repaired, otherwise very fine. Small booksellers label of Philip C. Duschnes on rear liner. With the bookplate of the ornithologist Frank S. Hatch on front blank. Housed in a later fleece-lined green cloth slipcase. The Gamekeeper at Home was first published without illustrations two years earlier, in 1878. John Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) was an English nature writer, noted for his depiction of English rural life in essays, books of natural history, and novels. This understanding is enhanced by the masterly drawings by Charles Whymper. Charles Whymper (1853-1941), was a prolific book illustrator specializing in travel, animal, and hunting themes.

The Power of Movement in Plants.

London: John Murray,, 1880. With illustrations. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt and with gilt decorative border at ends, covers blindstamped, brown coated endpapers. With the publisher's 32-page catalogue, dated May 1878, to the rear. With 196 woodcuts in the text. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Slight rubbing to extremities, tiny nick to head of front joint, small glue residue to front free endpaper; an excellent, largely unopened, copy. First edition, first issue, with 32pp. inserted adverts dated May 1878 and with two lines of errata at the foot of page x. "The first edition was published on November 6, 1880, and it is recorded that 1,500 copies were sold at Murray's autumn sale" (Freeman). The collaborative authorship proclaimed on the title page reflects Darwin's concern to introduce his children into the world of science. Francis Darwin had trained as a doctor but turned from medicine to botany, initially working as secretary and assistant to his father. In 1876 he had been for some months at the University of Würzburg, learning laboratory methods from Julius Sachs. "The book was an extension of Charles Darwin's work on climbing plants and it showed that the same mechanisms can be observed in plants in general. By extending the idea of irregular circumnutation the Darwins analysed the growth movement of plants in response to factors of the environment such as light, gravity, and wounds. In addition, they demonstrated that the mechanism of curvature in both roots and shoots was the result of differential growth rates. They could also confirm that the effect of the stimuli on the growth movement was indirect and that light and gravity act on some substance in the tip of the root and the shoot, which is transmitted to other parts of the plant. Francis Darwin later refined some of the experimental techniques and modified their theoretical conclusions" (ODNB). This copy with the compliments slip of bibliophile Arnold Muirhead (1900–1988) laid-in.

        Egypt: Descriptive, Historical and Picturesque

London, Paris and New York: Cassell, Petter and Gilpin, 1880. First edition of this monumental work on Egyptology. Folio, 2 volumes, pictorial brown cloth, gilt tooling and stamping to the spine and front panels, bevelled boards, all edges gilt. Illustrated with full-page plates. Very lightly rubbed; corners bumped. Translated from the German by Clara Bell. With an introduction and notes by S. Birch. An exceptional example, uncommon in this condition. Professor of Egyptology at Leipzig, Georg Ebers wrote histories and romantic novels relating to Egypt and was one of a handful of men who promoted and popularized its rediscovered ancient wonders. This work, handsomely illustrated with full-page wood-engraved plates and in-text vignettes of temples, pyramids, hieroglyphs and scenes along the Nile, is part history, part travelogue, and provides a fascinating view of Egypt in the late 19th century. The fine wood-engravings are by prominent contemporary artists, chief among them Lawrence Alma Tadema, "the most prolific and skilled of all who worked in [Egyptology]--'the painter of the Victorian vision of the ancient world" (Clayton, Rediscovery of Ancient Egypt, 178).

Across the Zodiac: The Story of a Wrecked Record Deciphered, Translated and Edited by . .

London: Trübner & Co., 1880, 1880. First edition. Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy, page 96; not in Wolff, who had but one novel by Greg. Hinges and spine skillfully repaired; very good copy. Rare.. 2 vols, 8vo, original brown cloth, gilt lettering. A major work of Victorian science fiction, the story of "a flight, in a huge spacecraft powered by a force called apergy, to Mars, which is found to be populated by a scientifically advanced people" - Locke. The story purports to be a translation of a manuscript in Latin, which is discovered by a former Colonel in the Confederate army, after he is shipwrecked on an unknown island in the South Pacific. Percy Greg (1836-1889) was a journalist from Manchester, who had an interest in American history, particularly the Civil War; hence the Confederate character in an English novel of science fiction. He wrote several other novels and was a prolific contributor to Blackwood's, the Manchester Guardian, Fraser's, etc. See Allibone, Supplement, and the ODNB.

[PHOTOGRAPHIC PANORAMA] Brisbane from Observatory in 4 pieces.

[Title from contemporary inscription verso]. Brisbane : Imperial Photographic Company, [c.1880]. Photographic panorama comprised of four contiguous albumen prints, each 250 x 280 mm, versos with wet stamp of 'Imperial Photo. Coy. Brisbane' and contemporary sequence numbers 1-4 in pencil, number 3 also inscribed with title 'Brisbane from Observatory in 4 pieces'; the four albumen prints are loose, having never been mounted; each has mild foxing, short edge tears and some creasing; panels 2,3 and 4 also display silverfish damage along the left hand edges; the photographic quality of the prints is exceptional, with beautiful chocolate tones and superb detail. A rare and impressive panorama of Brisbane, complete in four separate panels, as issued by Daniel F. Metcalfe's Imperial Photographic Company. We can locate no other complete example in Australian collections, although copies of individual panels may of course be preserved in contemporary albums of Brisbane views. American-born photographer Daniel F. Metcalfe opened his first Australian studio in Sydney in 1864. When the business failed, he joined the photographic firm of his step-father, Thomas Skelton Glaister. In the late 1860s, in partnership with Robert Millington, he travelled throughout regional New South Wales, ultimately making his way to Brisbane where he established a business in Queen Street from 1870. After brief business partnerships with his half-brother Thomas Skelton Middleton Glaister and William True Bennett, in 1880 D.F. Metcalfe took over the formerly Daniel Marquis-owned Imperial Photographic Company in Queen Street, which he relocated to George Street. A notice placed by Metcalfe in The Telegraph, Brisbane, 6 May 1880, advertising large format photographic prints of the type used in his four-panel panorama of Brisbane from Bowen Terrace, read: 'Wanted. The Public to inspect the Large Direct Pictures now executed by Imperial Photo. Company. Prices from 7s 6d. each; Carte de Visites 7s 6d, and Cabinets, 15s per dozen.'

        Jerusalem.

(Palestine, 1880s). - Oblong album (445 x 315 mm) with 71 large albumen photographic prints, mostly ca. 22 x 28 cm, signed and captioned in the negative (in French and English), mounted on both sides of the album's leaves. Includes a three-part folding panorama of Jerusalem from Mount Olivet, measuring 82 x 21 cms. Ornamental endpapers printed in gilt. Original auburn morocco with gilt upper cover. All edges gilt. A rare and unusually massive Palestine souvenir album containing 71 photographs by the renowned studio of Félix Bonfils (1831-85), the French-born photographer who had come to the Levant with General d'Hautpoul in 1860 and remained active in the East. Based in Beirut, Bonfils produced thousands of photographs depicting Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Greece and other parts of the Ottoman Empire. In the early days of western tourism to the Middle East, his works soon became popular as souvenirs. The photographs were available both separately and as individually arranged albums, but sets of this scope were uncommon, very few exceeding fifty images. The sumptuous binding which the owner chose underlines that this was a luxury souvenir for a more than ordinarily wealthy traveller. It features landscapes and city views, famous sights such as Jaffa Gate (Bab el-Khalil), sites sacred to the three religions (Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Church of the Flagellation, Al-Aqsa Mosque, Mosque of Omar, Wailing Wall), but also sights outside Jerusalem, including Hebron, Bethlehem, the Dead Sea, the River Jordan, Jericho, Wadi el-Kelt, Khan-el-Ahmar, Bethany, Nazareth, and Emmaus. - The photographs occasionally show some insignificant loss of contrast, but are altogether in good condition. A few edge flaws to the cardboard leaves, including a chafe mark across the lower edge where the paper has buckled. Binding in good condition, with occasional scuffing (more obvious on lower cover). A fine album of photographs of Palestine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
