        Egyptian Vultures

Great Britain: Original Watercolor, [c.1880-1900]. Matted in Rag Board Fine Fine original watercolor on rag paper. (25.4 x 17.7 cm). Matted in Rag. Condition: Fine, with minor aged paper remains to verso corners from previous mount watermarked 1902. Pathos notwithstanding and made all the more alluring by want of attribution, this vivid watercolor scene (a quartet of Egyptian Vultures feeding on prey on the banks of the Nile) was envisioned and thus executed not by a professional artist, field naturalist or explorer but by an amateur, or armchair, traveler/naturalist /painter. The drama evident yet depiction gentle, this watercolor quite plausibly was painted by a young Victorian gentlewoman who would have learned the art of nature painting, as was the custom, and who would have sought inspiration from the grand natural history color plate volumes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This bold and vivid naturalists' display of a tapestry of dappled foliage or the crystalline translucence of disturbed water or the splendid reticulated plumage is clearly stylized by a primitive eye, yet executed with an accomplished and refined hand; the technique is learned. The resulting composition is one of dramatic charm.

Lord Randolph Churchill, inscribed by Churchill to Brigadier-General Simon Fraser

This is Churchill's first biographic work, concentrating heavily on his father's career in Parliament after 1880. The British first edition was published in two volumes in 1906. In 1907, the publisher issued a one-volume edition, containing the full text of the two volume work (printed on thinner paper). The binding closely resembles that of the first edition of just a year earlier; the binding cloth and shelf appearance are the same except for the absence of the gilt title and coat of arms on the front cover of the one-volume edition. This particular copy bears a lovely and quite interesting five-line inscription in black ink on the half title reading: "To / Simon Fraser / from / Winston S. Churchill / 1908-1922". Brigadier-General Simon Joseph Fraser, 14th Lord Lovat and 3rd Baron Lovat KT, GCVO, KCMG, CB, DSO (1871-1933), was a prominent Scottish Roman Catholic aristocrat, soldier, politician, and one of the largest landowners in Britain. Lord Lovat served with distinction in both the Boer War and the First World War, where he commanded the Highland Mounted Brigade at Gallipoli . He would later serve with Churchill in the Conservative administration of Stanley Baldwin as Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs from 1926 to 1927. Churchill's inscription is an epitaph for his stormy, 15-year tenure as M.P. for the Scottish industrial constituency of Dundee. In 1908, Churchill - still in his mid thirties - was promoted to the Cabinet. At the time, an old rule required that newly appointed Cabinet Ministers had to seek re-election by their constituencies. Unfortunately for Winston, the by-election became a test of confidence in the Liberal government. Forced to defend the Government's policy of the past two years, targeted by vengeful Conservatives, and hounded on the hustings by Suffragettes, Churchill lost his seat. Literally within minutes of his defeat, Churchill received a telegram from Dundee Liberals inviting him to become their candidate. When he did accept the invitation - 72 hours later to the chagrin and consternation of local pride - Churchill wrote to his mother: "It is a life seat and cheap and easy beyond all experience". This was not to be the case. At the time, Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party, vexing the British establishment and helping lay the foundations of the modern welfare state. In 1904, he had quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class - doubtless endearing him to the people of Dundee. Nonetheless, the gap between him and his constituents was acute. Dundee was a predominantly working class constituency - "a dark mass of dirty grey sandstone tenements, punctuated by high chimney stacks and church spires", heavily reliant on the volatile textile trade. In 1922, Churchill lost his seat in a 6-way contest, in which he placed 4th. His party was likewise slaughtered at the polls, winning only 62 seats and becoming insignificant. At the time, the loss seemed like Churchill's political denouement. However, two years later, after losing two by-elections, he won his way back to the House of Commons as an independent. When Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin brought him into his Cabinet as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Churchill turned full circle, becoming once more a Tory, which he would remain for the remaining 40+ years of his long political life. The inscription is distinct and unfaded, though the ink has bled slightly onto the facing blank endpaper. The book itself retains the original, unrestored binding in red cloth with gilt top edge. The binding is tight and square with a lightly sunned spine, darkened spine gilt, and minor wear at extremities. The contents are clean and bright with no spotting and no markings other than the author's inscription. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.4, Woods/ICS A8(b), Langworth p.74.

        Lord Randolph Churchill

Here is a spectacular fine binding we have commissioned of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill.  This is Churchill's first biographic work, concentrating heavily on his father's career in Parliament after 1880. It was well received as both a frank portrayal of the subject and a showcase for Winston's literary talent. At the time, the young Winston Churchill still saw himself in the shadow of his once-influential father. Today it is the son that history has favored with lasting fame.  Offered here is the British first edition, only printing, in a superlative fine binding.  The binding was commissioned by us from a talented, sole-proprietor UK binder whose services we and our customers are privileged to employ.  The binding is half-leather, featuring hand-dyed, polished tan calf over maroon cloth boards with twin morocco spine labels on each volume. The gilt titling, rules, and decoration are 24 carat gold leaf, laid on by hand. The spine features raised bands, ruled compartments, extensive gilt decoration including the lion rampant, red title panel, and black author panel. All borders and transitions feature double gilt rules. The head and foot bands are sewn, not glued. Condition of the binding is flawless. The contents are well-suited to the binding, being especially crisp and bright for this edition.  No spotting.  No inscriptions.  All illustrations and protective tissue covers are intact.  Even the untrimmed page edges are unusually clean.  Searching for flaws, we note only slight age-toning to the rough extremities of the page edges and a tiny ink stain at the top edge of Volume II.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.1, Woods/ICS A8(a), Langworth p.69.

HUMOROUS ALBUM OF INDELICATE LADIES

      18. Very Good. [PAINTING ALBUM] TOSHINDO, artist. [A HUMOROUS ALBUM OF INDELICATE LADIES, c. 1880] 22 x 13.8 cm, Orihon folding album in raw silk covered boards. Shibata Toshindo was married into the Shibata family, her original family name was Niwa and birthplace Nagoya. The brother of one artist and married to another, she became a student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and developed her skills as a painter of beautiful women. In this album she has turned her brush to a more humorous angle. In a series of 12 double page paintings she has recast the traditional "farting scroll" genre to the feminine side. Feats of strength, wrestling, games, even the ultimate farting contest, performed by robed and (hopefully) perfumed ladies. Fun and obviously irreverent. In very good condition. Quite skillful with a sure line.

London : published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C. , [1880]. 1st Edition. No binding. Good+. TRULY RARE. WE CAN FIND NO OTHER COPIES OF THIS ENGRAVING. No date but probably circa 1880 when he would be about 39 years old. [Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby] "Lord Stanley" engraving London published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C. Drawn by C.W. Walton. Paper size is 17 1/2"" x 23 5/8". Plate mark size is 10 1/2" x 13". Image size is 5" x 7". Signature Imprint: Lord Stanley ( [facsimile signature] ) Stanley family motto, "Sans Changer" or without changing. Some soiling overall on paper (but not on actual image) and top left corner bent and dark marks. Bottom left corner with darker mark and small bent corner. Overall condition is good+. In 1892, this Lord Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby gave a treasured national icon Ñ the Stanley Cup to symbolize hockey Championship in Canada. It is the same Stanley Cup the National Hockey League competes for each year now. He was the 6th Governor General of Canada., National Portrait Gallery, London has only one similar engraving of Lord Stanley where he is older and their different Lord Stanley engraving is printed later. , "There are 13 portrait lithographs by the artist (Walton) in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. Many of the works he produced were of contemporary figures, including Francis Thomas de Grey Cowper, Seventh Earl Cowper (1834 -1905), who became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Charlotte Anne Montagu-Douglas-Scott (née Thynne), Duchess of Buccleuch (1811-1895), who served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria. Some of Walton's portraits were used to illustrate books. It seems that many of his earlier works were published by the firm of Morris & Co., 392 Strand, but he later published his own works from 103, Shaftesbury Avenue. Interestingly, a lithograph by Walton of Philip William Skynner Miles in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery was published by 'Morris, Walton & Co', so it seems he may have briefly been in partnership with Morris & Co." quoted from Philippa Martin, Curator, Information and Research (Historical) UK Government Art Collection

Första kapitlet. 23 november 1880-1881. Stockholm, Central-tryckeriet, 1881. (12) s. + (STAAFF, ERIK) Strindberg och "Klubben". Ur Pehr Staaffs efterlämnade papper. Tidningsurklipp ur Dagens nyheter den 25 augusti 1918. (3) s. Ej i Zetterlund.

TABLE MOUNTAIN, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

Cape Town:. 1880.. 13-1/8" x 7-7/16". Broadside, printed recto only. 11 stanzas of verse. Text double column, with thin vertical rule dividing. Signed in type at conclusion: "Charles F. Crewes. / Cape Town, June 2, 1880. / 42, Adderley-street.". Age toning & spotting to paper. 5 faint horizontal fold-lines. A VG. copy.. A poetical tribute, "Kingly Mountain, soaring high ... Imperial monarch of the plain!", to this prominent geographical sentinel watching over Cape Town, which, from the earliest to the present day, remains a popular attraction to the populace below.Ê The author a bit of an enigma... Theal records no other works by Crewes, with additional research suggesting he was a Cape Town photographer, having a studio, during the early 1880s, at the broadside's printed address: 42, Adderley-street. With respect to the piece itself, we are unable to find this literary work recorded in any major on-line database, including that of the University of South Africa, nor do we find it in the NUC. A rare 19th C. Cape Town publication. . At top, an S. Hampton drawn image, 2-9/16" x 6-1/8", depicting Cape Town harbor, with Table Mountain, Devil's Peak & "The Lion" in the background. Lithographed by H. Doree, Burg St., Cape Town.
