The Bush Meeting

Australia,: circa,, 1880.. Watercolour 27 x 54.7cms. mounted and framed, signed 'Esam' lower right. Arthur Esam (1850 - 1934) was an artist drover who specialized almost exclusively in watercolours. He was born in London and arrived in Melbourne in 1870 where he found work as a drover, painting as he travelled throughout Australia. This charming quintessentially Australian watercolour is an important social document. It also shows Esam's acceptance and tolerance towards Australian Aborigines who are enjoying the bush races along with the settlers. Unusually, two of the jockeys are Aboriginal and only a white settler is drinking.A detail of this work, or a related work by Esam, was engraved in The Australasian Sketcher, (25 February, 1882, p54) with the following text:"A BACK COUNTRY RACE MEETING.Our artist has depicted a race meeting of the kind occasionally got up in some remote inland town. These races are promoted by a local publican or shanty-keeper , who gives a prize of a whip, spurs, saddle, bridle or other article of horse-gear, and keeps open house while the races are "on", charging only for drinks. Some of these enterprising promoters make a good thing out of the day's work sometimes netting some £100 or £120 cash in the day and following night. The races, as may readily be imagined, are of a non-descript character, the jockeys ranging from small stockmen down to "native" boys sticking their bare feet in the stirrups".This engraving is also reproduced in A History of Australian Sport by R. & M. Howell Shakespeare Head Press, 1986.In 1880 Esam was appointed second-in-command to surveyor James W. Jones of an expedition into the interior of South Australia in search of fresh water. The expedition travelled from Port Augusta beyond Lake Eyre to the Queensland border. During this period he worked for the Sydney Mail, Adelaide Punch and Australian Sketcher. By 1893 he was working at Coolgardie Western Australia and over landing camels to Normaton in the Gulf.Eye witness social documentation is extremely important and this accomplished, witty and humorous painting superbly captures the race day in the outback; a charming nineteenth century record of horse racing, one of Australia's most loved sports.Provenance: Deutscher Fine Art, September 1980, catalogue no. 10 (as 'Bush Race Meeting');Private collection, Melbourne.

On the Theory of Brownian Motion.Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1930.

First edition, offprint issue, of this important paper which introduced the 'Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.' Although its origins lay in statistical mechanics, this process has found a wide variety of applications, notably in mathematical finance.

The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, also known as the 'Langevin equation' in the physics literature, was originally used to describe Brownian motion, the random motion of a small particle suspended in a fluid due to the collisions of the fluid molecules with the particle. Brownian motion is most simply modelled by the 'Wiener process', but this is unrealistic because it fails to take into account the viscosity of the fluid. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is a modification of the Wiener process, but allowing for a frictional drag on the particle proportional to its velocity, in accordance with Stokes's law.

Over time, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process tends to drift towards its long-term average. Such 'mean-reverting' processes are naturally suited to modelling several situations in finance. For example, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is used in the 'Vasicek model,' a mathematical model describing the evolution of interest rates. As opposed to stock prices, for example, interest rates cannot rise indefinitely: at very high levels they would hamper economic activity, prompting a decrease in interest rates. Similarly, interest rates cannot decrease below zero. As a result, interest rates tend to move in a limited range, showing a tendency to revert to a long term average value. Similarly, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process can be used to model the behaviour of commodity prices, since it embodies the economic argument that when prices are 'too high' demand will reduce and supply will increase, producing a counter-balancing effect. When prices are 'too low' the opposite will occur, again pushing prices back towards some kind of long term average.

Leonard Ornstein (1880-1941) was a Dutch physicist who studied under Hendrik Antoon Lorenz at the University of Leiden, receiving a PhD on a problem in statistical mechanics. In 1914 Ornstein succeeded Peter Debye in the chair of theoretical physics at the University of Utrecht, and over the next three decades carried out important work in experimental atomic physics. The Dutch-American physicist George Uhlenbeck (1900-1988) studied under Paul Ehrenfest, receiving his PhD in 1927 for work on statistical methods in quantum theory. After spending eight years at the University of Michigan, in 1935 he moved to Utrecht to take up the chair vacated by Hendrik Kramers. Although most of his work was in statistical mechanics, he is perhaps best known today for his discovery in 1925 of electron spin, in collaboration with Samuel Goudsmit, another of Ehrenfest's students.

Not in OCLC.. Offprint from: Physical Review, vol. 36 (1930), pp. 823-841. Original printed self-wrappers, pp. 823-841 [1:blank], very fine

        The Transval of New York

New York: Johnson & Co., 1880. Map printed in colours, (sheet size:17 x 54 inches), (splits at folds expertly sealed), [with:] a 29pp. pamphlet "The Transval of New York" (New York: Johnson & Co., 1880), small 8vo (6 3/4 x 4 3/8 inches), original pebble-grained cloth-covered boards. A fine map of the region now largely Washington Heights of Manhattan; from 130th Street to Inwood Hill Park, the Henry Hudson Bridge and the northern-most tip of Manhattan Island that Viele proposed to call the Transval in reference to the valley-like gorge that runs through the area. The name never stuck and little or nothing came of Viele's proposal that this would be an excellent terminal port for lumber and grain traveling via the Erie Canal. A canal, similar to that shown on the map, was finally dug in 1923. Much of Viele's map, as with many 19th century maps of Manhattan, was "as planned" or hoped for rather than "as existing". What were there in fact were the substantial homes, designated in black on the map, of prosperous New Yorkers, who enjoyed the spectacular views of the Hudson and many of the north-south running avenues that form the axes of the present community. Viele's pamphlet gives an entertaining and detailed history of the region and a particularly good account of the Battle for Fort Washington, which, though Washington's men lost, was a valiantly fought encounter, worthy of greater renown in the annals of that war. General Viele had a distinguished career. A descendent of an old New York Dutch family, he graduated from West Point, served in the Mexican War and the Civil War, was Engineer-in-Chief of the Central Park and Prospect Park developments and served a term in Congress. 1880. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1880. Undated endpaper ads. Original mustard yellow cloth decorated in black. First American Edition (it is uncertain whether this or Munro's "Seaside Library" edition preceded; Holt's was, however, the authorized one, and also it appeared in Publishers' Weekly a week earlier). This was issued as No. 118 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series," the series in which most of Hardy's early novels first appeared in America. The endpaper ads, though undated, are primary (listing no Hardy volumes issued after this one). By 1880 the books in this series were being issued with numbers, with undated endpaper ads, and in mustard yellow cloth; in the 1870s the volumes had been issued un-numbered, with dated endpaper ads, and in cream cloth.~This is a very good-plus copy, with very little external wear or soil (though the volume is a little aslant); the title page and p. 207 bear the inkstamp of a public library (but there are no other ex-library indications), and there is a Christmas 1977 inscription on a front flyleaf. Sacramento:: J. D. Young, Supt. State Printing.. 1880 - 1881.. 4to. 12" x 8-5/8". 1st edition (Rocq 6638). Not in Cowan? 3 volumes ( 640; [2], 641 - 1152; [2], 1153 - 1578) Text double column. Index concludes volume 3.. Modern brown quarter-calf with marbled paper boards.. Binding - Fine. Textblock - Overall VG+ (paper beginning to. yellow/ex-lib, with the occasional oval stamp).. This second Constitutional Convention of California revised the state Constitution to include an extended Bill of Rights, imposed [certain] restrictions on the power of the legislature, and dropped Spanish as the second legal language of the state. While certainly not a popular page- turner, this set represents the will of the people, and as such, offers a wealth of data to sociological researchers investigating the mid-to-late 19th C. "Far West" milieu. The set infrequently on the commerical market, with the last set at auction in 2000.

St. Ignatius Print, Montana, 1880. First Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo (measures approx. 7-1/4 x 5-3/4"). 45pp. Self-wrappers (though apparently trimmed, as Schoenberg's copy is a good 20% larger), soiling and folded corners throughout; signatures loose, but complete. A Good copy of a rare Jesuit Mission Press imprint. "Part I" (p1-17) contains prayers and a catechism; "Part II" (p19-45) contains prayers and hymns. SCHOENBERG 7, PILLING, Salishan, p28. // "It was in the Mission Boys' School that the St. Ignatius Press operated. Learning to set type and to operate the press was one occupation, among others, for Indian boys who attended the school." (Schoenberg, p11) The school did not acquire a press until 1875; and it is no small accomplishment that the most impressive item to be produced (A Dictionary of the Kalispel, 1877-9) came off the press within a few years.

        Lord Randolph Churchill

First U.S. edition, only printing. This is Churchill's first biographic work, concentrating heavily on his father's career in Parliament after 1880. It was very well received. At the time, the young Winston Churchill still saw himself in the shadow of his once-influential father. Today it is the son who is favored with lasting fame. Here is a near-fine set of the first U.S. edition. The U.S. edition is visually similar but aesthetically superior to the British, having gilt top page edges and a lightly scored cloth binding. Both volumes have extremely well-preserved red covers and spines with very little wear, square corners, and superior spines with excellent shelf presentation. The top edge gilt is still bright on both volumes. Volume II has some trivial soiling to the front face and some trivial wear at the top right hinge. Both volumes have very slightly darkened spines. The contents are superlative - clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. Even the untrimmed fore and bottom edges of the text block look unusually good. Overall, an extremely nice, collector worthy set. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A17.2, Woods A8(ab).

Frauds Exposed; or, How the People are Deceived and Robbed, and the Youth Corrupted

      J. Howard Brown New York: J. Howard Brown, 1880. First. hardcover. very good(+). Being a Full Exposure of Various Schemes operated through the Mails, and unearthed by the Author in Seven Years' Service as a Special Agent of the Post Office Department and Secretary and Chief Agent of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Frontispiece portrait and other b/w illustrations throughout. 576pp. Thick 8vo, attractively bound in contemporary 3/4 black morocco with gilt-stamped spine with red labels; marbled endpapers, t.e.g. New York: J. Howard Brown, (1880). First edition. Leather lightly edge-worn and gilt at top edge spotty, still a very good(+) copy of this remarkably scarce book; pages quite clean. Comstock was the self-labeled "weeder in God's garden" who created the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, an institution dedicated to supervising the morality of the public. He helped pass the Comstock Law, which made illegal the delivery or transportation of both "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material as well as any methods of, or information pertaining to, birth control. George Bernard Shaw used the term "comstockery", meaning "censorship because of perceived obscenity or immorality", after Comstock alerted the New York police to the content of Shaw's play Mrs. Warren's Profession. Shaw remarked that "Comstockery is the world's standing joke at the expense of the United States. Europe likes to hear of such things. It confirms the deep-seated conviction of the Old World that America is a provincial place, a second-rate country-town civilization after all." He aroused intense loathing from early civil liberties groups and intense support from church-based groups worried about public morals. He was a savvy political insider in New York City and was made a special agent of the United States Postal Service, with police powers up to and including the right to carry a weapon. With this power he zealously prosecuted those he suspected of either public distribution of pornography or commercial fraud. He proudly claimed to have driven fifteen persons to suicide in his "fight for the young." He had numerous enemies, and in later years his health was affected by a severe blow to the head from an anonymous attacker. Before his death, Comstock attracted the interest of a young law student, J. Edgar Hoover, interested in his causes and methods. -- Wikipedia
