Frauds Exposed; or, How the People are Deceived and Robbed, and the Youth Corrupted

      J. Howard Brown New York: J. Howard Brown, 1880. First. hardcover. very good(+). Being a Full Exposure of Various Schemes operated through the Mails, and unearthed by the Author in Seven Years' Service as a Special Agent of the Post Office Department and Secretary and Chief Agent of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Frontispiece portrait and other b/w illustrations throughout. 576pp. Thick 8vo, attractively bound in contemporary 3/4 black morocco with gilt-stamped spine with red labels; marbled endpapers, t.e.g. New York: J. Howard Brown, (1880). First edition. Leather lightly edge-worn and gilt at top edge spotty, still a very good(+) copy of this remarkably scarce book; pages quite clean. Comstock was the self-labeled "weeder in God's garden" who created the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, an institution dedicated to supervising the morality of the public. He helped pass the Comstock Law, which made illegal the delivery or transportation of both "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material as well as any methods of, or information pertaining to, birth control. George Bernard Shaw used the term "comstockery", meaning "censorship because of perceived obscenity or immorality", after Comstock alerted the New York police to the content of Shaw's play Mrs. Warren's Profession. Shaw remarked that "Comstockery is the world's standing joke at the expense of the United States. Europe likes to hear of such things. It confirms the deep-seated conviction of the Old World that America is a provincial place, a second-rate country-town civilization after all." He aroused intense loathing from early civil liberties groups and intense support from church-based groups worried about public morals. He was a savvy political insider in New York City and was made a special agent of the United States Postal Service, with police powers up to and including the right to carry a weapon. With this power he zealously prosecuted those he suspected of either public distribution of pornography or commercial fraud. He proudly claimed to have driven fifteen persons to suicide in his "fight for the young." He had numerous enemies, and in later years his health was affected by a severe blow to the head from an anonymous attacker. Before his death, Comstock attracted the interest of a young law student, J. Edgar Hoover, interested in his causes and methods. -- Wikipedia

Milwaukee, Wi.: Printed by the Sentinel Company, 1880.. [8],133,[1]pp. Original printed wrappers. Spine chipped at top (half inch) and bottom (2 inches). Wrappers soiled, moderately dampstained and with small chips around the edges. Contemporary inscription on the front wrapper: "compliments of the author." Light age-toning internally. A very good copy. In a half morocco box. This is the rare first edition, of which King states in the preface of the 1890 reprint: "Only enough copies were printed to reach the few comrades who rode the grim circuit of the 'Bad Lands' in that eventful year, and the edition was long ago exhausted." King was first lieutenant of the Fifth Cavalry, and served through the Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition of 1876. His journal of the expedition is one of the most interesting narratives of Indian warfare in the Wyoming and Dakota country ever published. The company left Laramie on June 22 for the purpose of cutting off the Indians on the South Cheyenne line. On July 7 a courier reached them with news of the annihilation of Gen. Custer and his favorite companies of the Seventh Cavalry. The Fifth, with nothing but the clothes they wore and without supply wagons, started in pursuit of the Indians, trailing and fighting them through nearly a thousand miles of country in a period of ten weeks, halting only at the head of the Heart River, when the last ration was gone.         VOYAGE EN AFRIQUE: cyclorama en 22 tableaux

1880. 1. MOVEABLE. (TOY THEATRE) VOYAGE EN AFRIQUE: cyclorama en 22 tableaux [JOURNEY IN AFRICA IN 22 SCENES]. This is a great form of a child's theatre called a cyclorama that became popular in the 19th century. This example is circa 1880 with no publication information given. The theatre is housed in a box with a large and fantastic chromolithographed scene covering the lid. The box measures 15 1/2" wide x 12 3/4" high and 4" deep. Inside the box is the theatre just slightly smaller than the box. There are 2 doors that open in the center. Both sides of the doors are chromolithographed and one section describes the 22 scenes that the theatre will reveal. The theatre is complete with a separate folding proscenium 11 inches high that attaches to slots on the top of the doors and there are 2 stand - alone side pieces of African natives for decoration. Once opened there is a stage with a large window protected with a clear covering. On the top edge of the theatre are slots into which one inserts the crank, that by turning, enables the child to view each of the 22 scenes. The scenes are on one very fine chromolithograph wound on a spool. By turning the crank the viewer is treated to a show detailing the trials and tribulations involved in such a grand trip. This is a wonderful child's theatre in amazingly nice condition. It is complete with both of the wings and crank which often go missing when copies turn up.

Original photograph of a nineteenth century French Cabinet of Natural History

France?,: circa, 1880.. Albumen print photograph, 17.5 x 23 cm., early manuscript note to the reverse, 'Cabinet de physique (cÙte gauche droit au fond)'; in excellent condition, a very small repair to the back in the upper corner causing insignificant discolouration. A very rare original albumen print photograph of a French cabinet of scientific and natural curiosities taken around 1880, with early manuscript note to the reverse, 'Cabinet de physique (cÙte droit au fond)'. Pride of place in one of the cabinets is given to a well-prepared specimen of a wallaby or small kangaroo and, even more remarkably, a platypus is also displayed on one of the high shelves near the corner. This is an exceptionally interesting image, and provides an uncommon opportunity to understand the selection and display of natural history specimens in a nineteenth-century setting. The variety of animals on display is particularly notable, with animals ranging from several big cats to a beaver. Numerous birds are displayed, and although many of the smaller birds are perhaps too indistinct to be firmly identified, there is certainly at least one penguin and several other well-known species can clearly be distinguished. The way in which the specimens are displayed, and particularly the fact that all of the glass doors are open and several pieces of laboratory equipment are casually arranged, strongly suggests that this is more than a simple snapshot.Unfortunately the author of the note on the back of the photograph has not specified the museum, which remains a tantalising mystery. It can be confidently asserted that it is the right wall of the room: the author originally wrote "gauche", but realising the error, has struck it out and added "droit". It may never be possible to discover the location of the collection, which is likely that of a natural history museum, perhaps attached to a university or teaching facility; having said that, it may even be the rooms of a dealer.

1880. Translated by Ellen E. Frewer. Illustrated by L. Benett. New York: E. P. Dutton and Company, 1881. One page undated ads (priced in sterling). Original bright red cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Illustrated American Edition (also the first to be issued in a decorative cloth binding) of one of Verne's odder tales... Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him...~This Verne title is also unusual in that all three early publishers of this tale, on both sides of the Atlantic, ultimately published it in the exact same cloth binding (showing several characters "afloat on their backs, propelled by the wind caught in minisails attached to toe-masts, controlled by waistband halyards" [T&M]).~The first edition in English was published in September 1879 by Lee & Shepard of Boston, translated by Virginia Champlin and unillustrated, both in wrappers and in plain cloth. By November, George Munro then published it in wrappers in his Seaside Library. About a year later (October 1880 but dated 1881), Dutton of New York published the tale as here, from the British plates (a different translation, by Ellen Frewer) -- with fifty full-page illustrations from the original French edition, and in the binding designed by Sampson Low. In November Sampson Low published it in England (perhaps waiting to make it a holiday offering). Finally, a year after this (September or October 1881) Lee & Shepard re-published the Champlin translation but with the fifty illustrations that had appeared in the Dutton and Sampson Low editions, and in the same binding they had used.~This copy is in bright red cloth, one of several colors used without priority, and is in near-fine condition (just a hint of wear at the spine ends, but unusually bright; the front endpaper bears a Christmas 1880 gift inscription, verifying the book's actual year of publication). Taves & Michaluk V020.
