        Cassell's Popular Natural History

London: Cassell, Petter, Galpin, circa, 1880. Four volumes in two, large octavo; a good copy in contemporary half green morocco. This is a beautifully, if somewhat romantically, illustrated overview of the animal kingdom, using an idiosyncratic taxonomical system. The coloured plates include Adam naming the animals, a pastoral scene overflowing with rabbits and hares and a boudoir scene redolent of angora cats. Pictures of battling animals abound, interspersed with engravings of dissected creatures and skeletons used for comparative purposes - including the head of a chimpanzee compared to the regal bust of a Greek philosopher! This "everyman encyclopedia" also includes a section on Australian animals.

Reminiscences of Rev. Wm. Ellery Channing, D.D.

Roberts Brothers, Boston 1880 - First Edition. 8vo; vi, 459pp; including index; original green gilt- stamped cloth, top & bottom of spine rubbed, some very small chips, outer hinges rubbed with a few small holes, brown coated endpapers a bit chipped, 2 x 1" piece missing from top right corner of front flyleaf, about very good.Elizabeth Palmer Peabody admired William Ellery Channing (1780-1842) after hearing him preach in Salem as early as 1823. She became intimately acquainted with him when his daughter Mary entered her Brookline school. From that time on, through the 1830's, Channing introduced her to the world of the future Transcendentalists. She, in turn, served as Channing as editorial assistant, preparing his sermons for printing, and thereby expanding the impact Channing had on the development of American Unitarianism and Transcendentalism. Channing was an independent thinker who was highly influential upon liberal religion, American literature, the anti-slavery cause, and Transcendentalism. NAW calls Peabody's REMINISCENCES OF WILLIAM ELLERY CHANNING "a work of rare charm as well as a key document in New England Intellectual history." A number of letters from Channing to Peabody are given, as well as conversations between the two of them and between Channing and other liberal theologians and important literary authors. NAW III, pp. 32-34. Myerson, Ed. DLB. THE AMERICAN RENAISSANCE IN NEW ENGLAND, pp. 152-156. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Photographic Carte de visite portrait of T.H. Huxley

London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company, circa, 1880. Carte de visite measuring 94 x 60 mm, blank margins neatly trimmed (no loss of image) else fine. Veteran of the Rattlesnake, friend of Darwin. Engaging carte de visite of Professor Thomas Huxley, one of the pre-eminent naturalists of Victorian England who championed the evolutionary theory propounded by Charles Darwin throughout his professional career. Huxley is also an important figure in Australian natural history as he accompanied the government biologist John Macgillivray aboard the Rattlesnake scientific survey of 1846-50. This expedition, under the command of Captain Owen Stanley, travelled north along the coast of north Queensland and through the Barrier Reef before exploring coastal New Guinea and the Louisiade archipelago. During his time in Australian waters Huxley speculated on concepts related to biology and evolution, so much so that he became a stauch advocate and defender of Darwin upon returning to Britain.

        The Book of Household Management

London: Ward, Lock & Co., 1880. Thick octavo, engraved and chromolithographic plates, numerous vignettes throughout; mild foxing, rebacked retaining portion of the original spine panel; a very good copy. With the appendix for recipes using Australian Meats. The great nineteenth-century encyclopaedia of cookery and domestic management, with new Australian content. This edition includes an interesting appendix prepared for the English housewife on the preparation of tinned and preserved meats imported from Australia (pages 1169-1174). Beeton believes them to be 'wholesome and cheap', and rails against the prejudice with which they first experienced in England: 'Cooks, as a rule, were rather inclines to snub the alien thrown into their midst; and servants generally were angry with appearance on their meals tables as their food. But happily this prejudice against a really, good, useful, economical food is dying - I may add, has died completely away.' These introductory comments are followed by 13 dishes for Australian meats, including a haricot and an 'Australian meat pie.'.

Autograph letter signed to "Hamilton," mentioning Charles Darwin

1880. <p>"Mr. Darwin Will Subscribe . . ."</p><p>Lubbock, John (1834-1914). Autograph letter signed to "Hamilton," mentioning Charles Darwin (1809-82). 2pp. High Elm, 21 February 1880. 180 x 113 mm. Light soiling along folds but very good.</p><p>From British scientist and banker John Lubbock, who made his name in scientific circles as a Darwinian anthropologist and archeologist. He is best remembered for having introduced the terms "Paleolithic" and "Neolithic" to describe the Old and New Stone Ages; these terms first appeared in his Pre-Historic Times (1865), the most influential archeological text of the nineteenth century. Lubbock was a close friend and neighbor of Darwin, having first met Darwin while still a child; he leased and then sold to Darwin the land on which Darwin made his famous "Sand Walk." In this brief letter Lubbock states that "Mr. Darwin will subscribe to the [West Kent] election funds" ("West Kent" added in red ink in another hand) and asks that "Mr. Charlton" forward the relevant papers.</p>

Stamps of the Franklin Institute Memorial Library on the front wrapper, half-title and p. 19, commemorating the Institute&#39;s 1884 International Electrical Exhibition; F. I. Library reference stamp on the verso of the front wrapper.</p><p>First Edition. The first separate publication on television. Rare--OCLC cites only three copies in the United States (Burndy Library, Library of Congress, California State Library), and the Karlsruhe database shows two copies in Portugal, one copy in Italy and one in France.</p><p>Paiva, a professor of chemistry and physics at the Polytechnic Academy at Porto (Portugal), became interested in the possibility of transmitting visual images by wire after the demonstration of Alexander Graham Bell&#39;s telephone in Lisbon in November 1877, and after reading L. Figuier&#39;s report, published in L&#39;Année Scientifique et Industrielle (June 1877, but read by Paiva after November 1877), of the "telectroscope," an instrument supposedly invented by Bell for the purpose of visual transmission. In February 1878 Paiva submitted a paper on a proposed telectroscope to the Portuguese journal O Instituto; the paper appeared in the March issue. Paiva&#39;s paper described an apparatus similar to that reported by Figuier, but was the first to suggest "televising" images by means of a selenium-covered plate, which would make use of selenium&#39;s peculiar electrical sensitivity to light (discovered in 1873 by Willoughby Smith) to convert light from images into electricity:</p><p>The experiments we intended to make, and which we shall still attempt to realize, consisted in the employment of selenium as the sensitive plate of the camera of the telectroscope. This body possesses the remarkable property, recently discovered, of,-when interposed in an electric circuit which passes through a galvanometer,-making the needle of the latter deviate sensibly whenever a luminous ray incides on the selenium, and this deviation varies with the color of the light (p. 47).</p><p>According to Lange&#39;s Histoire de la télévision (internet reference), Paiva&#39;s 1878 paper represents "la première formulation théorique de la possibilité d&#39;utiliser le sélénium pour transmettre les images à distances" [the first theoretical formulation of the possibility of using selenium to transmit images at a distance]. In October 1879 Paiva published a paper in Commercio da Portuguez in which he presented another plan for a telectroscope, in which a selenium plate would be scanned by a metal point. As far as is known, Paiva never attempted to test his ideas experimentally.</p><p>In 1880, in the interests of establishing priority, Paiva published La téléscopie électrique, which included reprints of his 1878 and 1879 papers (in both Portuguese and French), several articles on the telectroscope reprinted from scientific journals and newspapers, and an English translation of Paiva&#39;s 1878 paper made by his student William Macdonald Smith. This small pamphlet represents not only the first separate publication of Paiva&#39;s papers, but their first appearance in languages well known in the wider scientific community. This copy of La téléscopie électrique was presented by Paiva to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, which featured the work in its 1884 International Electrical Exhibition, the first exhibition on electricity held in the United States. Very good. </p><p>First Editions, Offprint Issues. Garrison-Morton 713 (no. [1]). <b>Altmann coined the term "nucleic acid </b>," which he introduced in his 1889 paper "Ueber Nucleinsäuren," and developed a convenient and general method for its preparation. His work on nucleic acids represents an early stage in the development of molecular biology. </p><p>Altmann was a student of Johann Friedrich Miescher, who in 1869 discovered a hitherto unknown substance in the cell nucleus that he named nuclein; we now know it as DNA. Altmann worked with Miescher at Miescher&#39;s institute in Basel, called the "Vesalianum" after the great 16th-century anatomist. At the time Miescher was performing biochemical investigations of salmon sperm, from which he had succeeded in isolating protamine, an important constituent of spermatazoa. However, Miescher </p><p>"fell into an error: he detected purine bases in the protamine he had isolated by the murexide reaction, no doubt caused by contamination with adhering DNA. Later, Miescher requested that [his associate] Piccard re-investigate this question. Piccard also detected purine bases in the acid extract of spermatozoa from which protamine was isolated. However, he concluded (correctly) that nuclein also contained purine bases. This confusion was not resolved until R. Altmann in 1889 separated protein (free of purine bases) from nuclein (called by him nucleic acid), containing xanthine bases" (Wolf). </p><p>Our copy of Altmann&#39;s paper on nucleic acid bears the stamp of Miescher&#39;s Vesalianum, as does the third offprint in the collection, a paper on the theory of imaging. The second offprint, on the structure of the cell nucleus, is from Miescher&#39;s library, with his stamp and booklabel. Fruton, Proteins, Enzymes, Genes, p. 400.         Bluebeard Pantomime Book

McLoughlin Bros., New York - No date [ca. 1880]. Large thin octavo color pictorial paper-covered boards. A remarkable and ingenious toy book. Ten pages of text, the first five of which rhyme. The two-page center plate is a color chromolithograph stage proscenium, complete with an orchestra in the pit and boxes at the sides. Inserted via string ties in the center is a chromolithographed booklet which changes the scenes when its pages are turned. Some are half pages that change characters in the scene, a forerunner of the technique used by Goodall in his toy books. The scenes in the insert show the complete story as described in the text. Spine split with pages nearly loose but holding. Board edges with some wear and a spot on the lower front cover. Contents clean and complete, with the stage scene fine and bright. One of a series of five titles done by McLoughlin in this fashion, and one of their most charming endeavors. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The ABC of Animals

McLoughlin Bros., circa, New York 1880 - Large octavo; six fully chromolithographed leaves; some scattered foxing, but the colour leaves fresh and bright, original colour pictorial wrappers, chipped at spine. Wonderfully entertaining nineteenth-century American alphabet book. Each letter is represented by an animal, and each is illustrated in vibrant colour and rendered into rhyme, thus: K is a Kangaroo hopping along; L stands for Lions, loud-roaring and strong. The final two leaves are a triumph of verse-making: 26 lines of perfectly metered verse consisting purely of animals, thus: Ibex, Rhinoceros, Owl, Kangaroo, Jackal, Opossum, Toad, Cockatoo.         Photographic Carte de visite portrait of T.H. Huxley

London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company, circa 1880 - Carte de visite measuring 94 x 60 mm, blank margins neatly trimmed (no loss of image) else fine.

ANNUAL MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, TO THE TWO HOUSES OF CONGRESS AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE THIRD SESSION OF THE FORTY-SIXTH CONGRESS

Government Printing Office, Washington 1880 - Printed green-gray wraps; 34 pages. SIGNED on the top margin of the front cover "With my Compliments/R. B. Hayes" by the President. Hayes covers much ground in this address beginning with the statement: "Continued opposition to the full and free enjoyment of the rights of citizenship, conferred upon the colored people by the recent amendments to the Constitution, still prevails in several of the late slaveholding States. It is the desire of the good people of the whole country that sectionalism as a factor in our politics should disappear." Hayes also proposes reforming the civil service to eliminate corruption and expresses his wish to eradicate the evils of Mormon polygamy in Utah. He discusses foreign relations at some length and concludes with recommendations specific to Washington including its water supply, railroad depots, and the completion of the Washington Monument. Hayes is quite uncommon in signed books and pamphlets and when found are usually examples from his library rather than his own work. Inscription a little light, but very clear. There is a vertical crease down the center of the pamphlet. Very Good [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Die römische Campagna mit der Via Appia.

1880. Öl über schwarzer Feder, auf Malpappe, rechts unten bezeichnet, datiert und signiert "Via Appia 23 April 1880 HThom(a)". 34,8:53,5 cm. Mit kleinen Retuschen. Provenienz: Sammlung Simon Ravenstein, Frankfurt a.M. Literatur: H. Thode, Thoma. Des Meisters Gemälde, Stuttgart/Leipzig, DVA, 1909, Abb. S. 156 unten..
