A Narrative of the Voyage Round the World

London - Bickers and Son, 1880. London - Bickers and Son, 1880 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart copy of this account of the voyages of Captain James Cook, the explorer and navigator credited with the discovery of Australia. In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions. Andrew Kippis (1725 1795) was an English nonconformist clergyman and biographer. Cook's Voyages was first published in London in 1788 and includes a letter by Kippis to King George III dated June 13, 1788. The book has accounts of the three voyages 1768-1771, 17721775, and 1776-1779 as well as an account of the character of Captain Cook, the effects of his voyages, and a commentary of his services. With twelve monochromeplates reproduced in exact facsimile, from drawings made during the voyages. Condition: In a blue calf armorial prize binding. Externally smart, though a little rubbed. Some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. Pages are bright, with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        The Works of Thomas Hood

London - Ward, Lock, & Co., 1880. London - Ward, Lock, & Co., 1880 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An illustratedset of The Works of Thomas Hood by his son and daughter. This setcontains nine of eleven volumes, and is missing volumesnine and eleven. Thomas Hood (23 May 1799 3 May 1845) was a British humourist and poet. His son, Tom Hood, became a well known playwright and editor. Hood contributed humorous and poetical articles to the provincial newspapers and magazines. As a proof of his literary vocation, he used to write out his poems in printed characters, believing that this process best enabled him to understand his own peculiarities and faults. On his return to London in 1818 he applied himself to engraving, enabling him later to illustrate his various humours and fancies by quaint devices. In 1821, John Scott, the editor of the London Magazine, was killed in a duel, and the periodical passed into the hands of some friends of Hood, who proposed to make him sub-editor. His installation into this post at once introduced him to the literary society of the time; and in becoming the associate of John Hamilton Reynolds, Charles Lamb, Henry Cary, Thomas de Quincey, Allan Cunningham, Bryan Procter, Serjeant Talfourd, Hartley Coleridge, the peasant-poet John Clare and other contributors to the magazine, he gradually developed his own powers. The series of the Comic Annual, dating from 1830, was a kind of publication at that time popular, which Hood undertook and continued, almost unassisted, for several years. Under that somewhat frivolous title he treated all the leading events of the day in caricature, without personal malice, and with an under-current of sympathy. He started a magazine in his own name, for which he secured the assistance of many literary men, but which was mainly sustained by his own activity. From a sick-bed, from which he never rose, he conducted this work, and there composed well known poems, such as the Song of the Shirt (which appeared anonymously in the Christmas number of Punch, 1843 and was immediately reprinted in The Times and other newspapers across Europe. It was dramatised by Mark Lemon as The Sempstress, was printed on broadsheets, cotton handkerchiefs and was highly praised by many of the literary establishment, including Charles Dickens. ) Condition: In black quarter calf amateur bindings with purple cloth covered boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Corners are slightly bumped on some volumes. Internally, generally firmly bound, though binding is loosening in places in some volumes. Pages are generally bright and clean with some mild age-toning. There are some marks to the first and last few pages in all volumes. Overall: VERY GOOD..

, 1880. 1880. A Tale. In Three Volumes. London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1880. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of one of Hardy's less-known novels. Written during the year 1879 and serialized in the magazine Good Words (for that appearance it was bowdlerized by its Scottish clergyman editor), it is a tale in which Hardy combined the three separate strands which at that time most affected his life. One strand was his own Dorset background, and in particular the idea of a family reminiscence; another is the strand of historical study, and in particular the concentration he was then giving to the years 1804-1805 and the effect of the then-recent French Revolution.~These two strands... are firmly woven into the construction of the novel, and give it remarkable unity and a steady sense of reality. Hardy was determined that the charges of unreality, brought against The Return of the Native, should not be repeated. [Gittings]~The third strand, natural in that Hardy was then writing with an idea of how his books might appear onstage, is that the characters are "universal figures from the traditional rituals of the theatre."~In any event, The Trumpet-Major was "a triumphant success with the critics"; however, in spite of Hardy himself drawing the two vignettes for the volumes' front covers, the novel in book form did not sell well.~In this set the blank rear covers have a blind-stamped two-rule border on the first two volumes, three-rule on the third volume; the volumes appear either way, and it is common to see them mixed within the same set as here. Condition is generally very good: the spines are a little darkened (as is often the case) and there is light wear to the edges; the front covers with Hardy's designs remain quite bright (though on one it is perceivable that a lending library label once resided there), and there is some soil on the rear covers; the pale yellow endpapers are original, though some have a deft repair at the gutter with a sliver of matching paper. Since the three-decker format was intended to be rented rather than bought by the public (the vast majority of first edition copies always went directly to lending libraries), it is tough to find Hardy's pre-1894 novels in much better condition. Purdy pp 31-35.

The Day Dawn; or, The Gospel in Type and Prophecy

Pittsburgh: Published by A. D. Jones, 1880. Pittsburgh: Published by A. D. Jones. 1880. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First printing, 1880. 8vo, original black cloth gilt, pink endpapers, 332 (2) pp. Very good, faint mottling or discoloration to cloth, binding tight, contents very good and unmarked. Has original red 'Zion's Watch Tower / HQ, 101 Fifth Ave. / Pittsburgh, PA' stamp on title page and last page. RARE: at the archive org website is the following description of this book: This was the first book circulated by the Watch Tower magazine, edited by Charles Taze Russell, and is mentioned several times in the years 1880 and 1881 in that magazine. The magazine is now known as the Watchtower and is now circulated by Jehovah's Witnesses. Paton and Russell parted company in 1881 and the book was later republished by Paton in 1890, but with several revisions. This is the original 1880 edition which was endorsed by the Watch Tower magazine. Its theme is stated on page 79: 'Our claim is that the period is revealed, during which Christ comes, the living generation will be judged, the dead in Christ raised, the living changed, the nations overwhelmed in a time of trouble, the Jews restored, and the whole church of Christ glorified, ready for the glorious millennial reign; but that we are left without definite time to the change of translation expected. We believe that period is one of forty years and commenced in 1874, and will reach to 1914. This period is the time for the disposal of the church and nations are now existing, and is in that sense the harvest. It is the time of exaltation of both Jewish and gospel churches to their position for millennial work, and hence is the day-dawn. The glorious light shining on God’s plan of the ages is in harmony with our claim as to the time.' Only 7 copies in OCLC. One of the rarest books in the Jehovah's Witness cannon of books, preceeding Russell's Millenial Dawn by several years.

Recht dekorativ gebunden! - In Französisch.
