Sulla circolazione del sangue nel cervello dell' uomo. Memoria del . letta nella seduta del 7 dicembre 1879

      Tip del Salviucci, Roma 1880 - 29x21cm, (121),(16) pp., Caption title. Recent binder's blind boards. Pagination runs 237-358 + 9 plates [7 of which are double-page brainwave imaging charts]. An extract from "Atti della R. Accademia dei Lincei, Anno CCLXXVII, 1879-80, Serie Terza, Vol. V". ["Angelo Mosso.,.19th century Italian physiologist, who created the first crude neuroimaging technique by recording the pulsation of the human cortex in patients with skull defects following neurosurgical procedures. From his findings that these pulsations change during mental activity, he inferred that during mental activities blood flow increases to the brain. Though crude, this inference is the basis for the more refined neuroimaging techniques of FMRI, and PET,essential to neuroscience research today. He was born in Turin, studied medicine there and in Florence, Leipzig, and Paris, and was appointed professor of pharmacology (1876) and professor of physiology (1879) at Turin. He invented various instruments to measure the pulse and experimented and wrote upon the variation in the volume of the pulse during sleep, mental activity, or emotion.,." - wikipedia].         Sword and Surplice;

      London: David Bogue, , 1880. or, Thirty Years' Reminiscences of the Army and the Church. an Autobiography. Octavo. Contemporary half calf, purple sand-grain cloth boards, black morocco label, edges and endpapers marbled. Frontispiece. A very nice copy. First edition. "Service from 1845 in the Hussars in India and the Crimean War" (Bruce). A really very uncommon memoir, OCLC listing just 8 copies worldwide - BL, London Library, Cambridge and NLS in the UK, California State, Detroit and Cleveland Public Libraries, NY Historical Society in the US - COPAC another at Oxford. Wale was commissioned as a cornet in the 15th Hussars in 1845, serving with them in India, transferring to the Scots Greys in 1851 and spending some time in the Crimea with them. He was ordained a Deacon in 1861, becoming rector of Folksworth in Huntingdonshire in 1865, and organizing secretary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in Rochester from 1881 until his death in 1892. This is a chatty, anecdotal memoir which paints an excellent picture of the social side of military life in the 1850s. Crested bookplate of William G. Stuart to the front pastedown, carte-de-visite of the Rev. Douglas G. Matthews, Southover Rectory, Lewes mounted on the front free.

        Ueber Nucleinsäuren. Offprint with 2 others, Miescher's Copies.

(1889). 524-536pp. Original printed wrappers, creased vertically. Stamp of the Vesalianum, Physiologisch-chemisches Anstalt, Basel on the front wrapper. (2) Die Structur des Zellkernes. Offprint from Arch. Anat. Phys. (n.d.). 409-411pp. Original printed wrappers, creased horizontally, small wax stain on front cover. Booklabel and stamp of Johann Friedrich Miescher (1844-95). (3) Zur Theorie der Bilderzeugung. Offprint from Arch. Anat. Phys.(1880). 111-184pp. Plate. Original printed wrappers, slightly soiled. Upper right corner of first leaf cut away. Stamp of the Vesalianum, Physiologisch-chemisches Anstalt, Basel on the front wrapper. Together 3 offprints. Very good. First Editions, Offprint Issues. Garrison-Morton 713 (no. [1]). Altmann coined the term "nucleic acid ," which he introduced in his 1889 paper "Ueber Nucleinsäuren," and developed a convenient and general method for its preparation. His work on nucleic acids represents an early stage in the development of molecular biology. Altmann was a student of Johann Friedrich Miescher, who in 1869 discovered a hitherto unknown substance in the cell nucleus that he named nuclein; we now know it as DNA. Altmann worked with Miescher at Miescher's institute in Basel, called the "Vesalianum" after the great 16th-century anatomist. At the time Miescher was performing biochemical investigations of salmon sperm, from which he had succeeded in isolating protamine, an important constituent of spermatazoa. However, Miescher "fell into an error: he detected purine bases in the protamine he had isolated by the murexide reaction, no doubt caused by contamination with adhering DNA. Later, Miescher requested that [his associate] Piccard re-investigate this question. Piccard also detected purine bases in the acid extract of spermatozoa from which protamine was isolated. However, he concluded (correctly) that nuclein also contained purine bases. This confusion was not resolved until R. Altmann in 1889 separated protein (free of purine bases) from nuclein (called by him nucleic acid), containing xanthine bases" (Wolf). Our copy of Altmann's paper on nucleic acid bears the stamp of Miescher's Vesalianum, as does the third offprint in the collection, a paper on the theory of imaging. The second offprint, on the structure of the cell nucleus, is from Miescher's library, with his stamp and booklabel. Fruton, Proteins, Enzymes, Genes, p. 400. Wolf, "Friedrich Miescher, the man who discovered DNA," (web reference). Portugal and Cohen, A Century of DNA, pp. 20-21. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Ten Principal Avataras of the Hindus, with a Short History of each Incarnation and Directions for the Representation of the Murttis as Tableaux Vivants.

      Calcutta, I. C. Bose & Co. for the Author, 1880.. 4to (29.5 : 23.5 cm). (4), II, (4), 157 p. With 12 full-page lithographs mounted on thick plates with printed frames. Bound for the author in dark green half-morocco with cloth-covered boards, richly gilt.. Only edition, uncommon. Tagore (1840-1914) was a pious Hindu, wealthy land owner and gem specialist. He earned worldwide scientific reputation, however, by extensive researches into Hindu music and drama. The present monograph exemplifies the ten incarnations of Vishnu on earth are represented. Each incarnation is narrated after the ,Puranas' and the classical epics. The accompanying songs are given in Sanskrit and European notation as well. Tagore also explains the stage, lights, curtain and grouping of his living pictures which were acted as ,Murttis', i.e. ,without any expressive pantomimic gestures, and in which a Sutradhara' is introduced, who explains the mute figures' (Preface). The lithographs with scenes from ,Tableaux vivants' performed in Tagore's house. - Bold autograph dedication by the author on front fly-leaf, dated ,Calcutta, 4 August 1881'. The dedicatee was ,His Excellence, Count Münster, the Imperial German Ambassador at London', i.e. the German diplomat Georg zu Münster (1820-1902). - Spine faded, hinges and corners somewhat chafed, foxing to plates. Nonetheless a fine copy.

        Fighting the Sea

      circa, 1880. Ink sketch, 195 x 160mm, signed lower left; with manuscript caption at base, mounted and framed. This is the original drawing for the finished watercolour, {i A Tug Saving a Dismasted Smack at the Edge of Scroby Sands, Yarmouth,} painted in 1885 for Sir Edward Cecil Guiness. Interestingly, this drawing was reproduced as an illustration in the catalogue of the {i Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour }in{i }1884. Until recent times the work was in the family of the artist Oswald Brierly, a leading marine painter who had studied naval architecture. Brierly learned his artistic skills at Henry Sass's Academy, a private drawing school in Bloomsbury "a preparatory school" for the Royal Academy and the British Institution, other students included Rossetti, Millais and Edward Lear. After a spell in Plymouth developing naval skills, Brierly sailed with several expeditions including the {i Rattlesnake }voyage on a survey of the Barrier Reef, and with Benjamin Boyd on the {i Wanderer.} He subsequently wrote, with Rev. John Milner, the narrative published as {i Cruise of the Galatea} (London, 1869). In 1874 Brierly was made marine painter to Queen Victoria. A second Brierly sketch is attached to back of this one. {i 'Barges used to take out the stones during construction of the breakwater at Plymouth OWB'}.

        THE FIFTH CAVALRY IN THE SIOUX WAR OF 1876. CAMPAIGNING WITH CROOK.

      Milwaukee, Wi.: Printed by the Sentinel Company, 1880. - [8],133,[1]pp. Original printed wrappers. Spine chipped at top (half inch) and bottom (2 inches). Wrappers soiled, moderately dampstained and with small chips around the edges. Contemporary inscription on the front wrapper: "compliments of the author." Light age-toning internally. A very good copy. In a half morocco box. This is the rare first edition, of which King states in the preface of the 1890 reprint: "Only enough copies were printed to reach the few comrades who rode the grim circuit of the 'Bad Lands' in that eventful year, and the edition was long ago exhausted." King was first lieutenant of the Fifth Cavalry, and served through the Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition of 1876. His journal of the expedition is one of the most interesting narratives of Indian warfare in the Wyoming and Dakota country ever published. The company left Laramie on June 22 for the purpose of cutting off the Indians on the South Cheyenne line. On July 7 a courier reached them with news of the annihilation of Gen. Custer and his favorite companies of the Seventh Cavalry. The Fifth, with nothing but the clothes they wore and without supply wagons, started in pursuit of the Indians, trailing and fighting them through nearly a thousand miles of country in a period of ten weeks, halting only at the head of the Heart River, when the last ration was gone. Experiences of a Colonist Forty Years Ago ; A Journey from Port Phillip to South Australia in 1839.

      J. Williams, Adelaide 1880 - Octavo, photographic frontispiece and two other sheets (five illustrations in total); very good indeed in the original red cloth, decorated in blind and gilt, a few bumps, flecked noticeably to spine. The corrected second edition with photographic plates. Rare. The second edition of Hamilton's account of two overland journeys from Port Phillip to Adelaide in 1839 and 1846 is known for the inclusion of photographic plates, reproducing drawings done by Hamilton himself. The first edition, rather differently arranged, was published in 1879. Holden notes: 'the first edition of this work was published in 1879 and was illustrated with six wood-engravings? Five of the six original wash drawings from which these wood-engravings were done were then photographed for the second edition. The same List of Illustrations, however, was bound into the second edition and hence confuses the collation.' Holden includes an excellent biographical note on the interesting Hamilton, artist, horse-fancier, and early South Australian settler. The title-page has the early manuscript name of "J. Hindmarsh", presumably John Hindmarsh Jun., the son of the first Governor and a prominent lawyer in later Victorian Adelaide. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
