        Handbuch des Schachspiels

Verlag von Veit & Co, Leipzig 1880 - xvi+704 pages with diagrams. Small quarto (10 1/2" x 7") bound in 3/4 black cloth with marbled boards and label to spine. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 712) Sixth edition. Handbuch des Schachspiels (Handbook of Chess, often simply called the Handbuch) is a chess book, first published in 1843 by Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa. It was one of the most important opening references for many decades. The Handbuch had been the project of Paul Rudolf von Bilguer, who was with von der Lasa a member of the Berlin Chess Club and the influential group of chess masters later called the Berlin Pleiades. Bilguer died in 1840, with the work still in the early stages. Von der Lasa completed the project and saw it published, with his friend von Bilguer alone named as author. It contained comprehensive analyses of all opening variations then known, plus a section on the history and literature of chess. Von der Lasa prepared four further editions (1852, 1858, 1864, and 1874). The sixth edition (1880) was by Constantin Schwede; and the seventh edition (1891) was by Emil Schallopp, with the assistance of Louis Paulsen. Carl Schlechter, who had drawn a match for the World Championship with Emanuel Lasker in 1910, prepared the eighth and final edition. Published in eleven parts between 1912 and 1916, it totaled 1,040 pages and included contributions by Rudolf Spielmann, Siegbert Tarrasch, and Richard Teichmann. International Master William Hartston called it "a superb work, perhaps the last to encase successfully the whole of chess knowledge within a single volume." Condition: Rebound, spine label faded, boards rubbed, previous owner's gift inscription to title else a very good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Settler's Hut

1880. Watercolour, 43 x 65 cm. signed and dated 1880 lower right, mounted and framed. This lovely watercolour is probably of a valley in the Bathurst region of New South Wales as the artist Edward Combes lived at Glanmire from the 1860's. It captures the isolation of early Australian settlement showing the simple timber slab homestead and the family's activities around it. Edward Combes (1830 -1895) was an engineer, pastoralist, politician and painter. He arrived from Wilshire England in 1851 to join the gold rush at Ballarat and Bendigo. In 1854 he returned to Paris for two years training in scientific engineering and studied water colour drawing. On his return to Australia a few years later he moved to New South Wales bought land and built {i Glanmire Hall} with his new English wife. By 1870 he was well known throughout this central western district of New South Wales and pursued interests in both politics and art. In 1878 he was the executive commissioner at the Paris International Exhibition followed by commissioner for NSW at the Melbourne International Exhibition. He was also a member of the Legislative Council and contributed significantly to the development of colonial public works and education policy. In 1879 he directed the art section of the Garden Palace Exhibition. The Bulletin, on the 23rd. April 1881 described him as the "best amateur painter in Sydney and the wonder is that the prosy engineer can find time to indulge in the "seraph ecstasy" of a pictorial ideal". His paintings were exhibited in London galleries and at the Paris salon and he was on the committee of the NSW Academy of Art and president of the Art Society of NSW where he also exhibited his work. Unusually, Combes did not seek recognition in Australia as a painter but was highly regarded in London and Paris, so perhaps his political and artistic leadership positions dictated this distinction. The Art Gallery of New South Wales which he helped to found and to direct for over twenty years received from him a single etching of one of his paintings. A portrait bust of this outstanding nineteenth century polymath by Simonetti is in the Gallery.

PAIR OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS OF THE CAMP OF K AND F COMPANIES OF THE NINTH U.S. INFANTRY DURING THE UTE WAR, AT SNAKE RIVER, WYOMING TERRITORY, IN 1879-1880].

[Wyoming. 1880]. - Two watercolors, painted on the recto of two one-cent postcards, each measuring 3 x 5 inches. Description of each scene written in pencil on the verso of each card. Very minor wear. Near fine. A pair of lovely watercolors of the camp of two U.S. Infantry companies in Wyoming Territory during the Ute War in 1879-1880. The watercolors show the camp of K and F companies of the Ninth Infantry near the Snake River. Based on the scenery, these must depict the southern part of Jackson's Hole, the only area which corresponds to the views shown. One shows the camp during the summer, and the other shows it in the winter. The camp was established in a valley, which is shown as lush and green in the summer scene, but barren and snow-covered in the winter scene. A note on the verso of the summer scene says that the "pictures were painted with water colors by a soldier of this command." The verso of each card contains pencil descriptions of each scene. For example, in the comments on the summer scene it is noted that "the brush back of the tents are sage brush.the timber back of the camp follows the river still to the right are mountains and hills with cedar timbers." Some of the text on the verso of the winter scene discusses the various buildings in the camp, including the cook's house and the sutler's store. The Ninth Infantry was ordered into the field as part of Army strategy during the Ute War, and established their camp along the Snake River in Wyoming Territory in November, 1879. They remained there until July, 1880. Original artwork from the Indian wars of the west is rare.

Settlers' Guide to Washington Territory and to the Lands of the Northern Pacific Railroad on the Pacific Slope.

Portland: Himes the Printer, [c. 1880]. - 8vo., (8 7/8 x 5 ¾ inches). Fine folding lithographed "Map of Washington showing the Northern Pacific Railroad and connecting lines," with original hand color in full (lightly toned, one or two new folds). Original publisher's printed paper wrappers (slightly toned, one or two spots). First edition. This charming pamphlet contains the important map of Washington Territory by G.W. & C.B. Colton. Between 1831 and 1890, the Colton firm dominated American map publishing, and their atlases were the finest produced in the U.S. during the nineteenth century. The company was founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893), who had no formal training in geography or cartography; he began by purchasing copyrights of maps prepared by other individuals or companies, and his principal role was to manage the production and distribution of the maps. His first maps were drawn by the esteemed cartographer David H. Burr in the 1830s. By the 1850s Colton was also publishing guidebooks, atlases and immigrant and railroad maps. The firm was renamed G.W. & C.B. Colton in the 1860s when Colton was succeeded by his sons, George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901) and Charles B. Colton (c. 1831-1916). It is believed that George Colton compiled the company's 1855 'Atlas of the World' and served thereafter as the firm's principal map compiler, cartographer, and engraver. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the more expensive international market rather than the cheap domestic one. This map shows Washington Territory delineated by county, with the Northern Pacific Railroad lines, including completed, projected, and connecting routes, outlined in color.
