Original photograph of a nineteenth century French Cabinet of Natural History

France: circa, 1880. Albumen print photograph, 17.5 x 23 cm., early manuscript note to the reverse, 'Cabinet de physique (côte gauche droit au fond)'; in excellent condition, a very small repair to the back in the upper corner causing insignificant discolouration. A very rare original albumen print photograph of a French cabinet of scientific and natural curiosities taken around 1880, with early manuscript note to the reverse, 'Cabinet de physique (côte droit au fond)'. Pride of place in one of the cabinets is given to a well-prepared specimen of a wallaby or small kangaroo and, even more remarkably, a platypus is also displayed on one of the high shelves near the corner. This is an exceptionally interesting image, and provides an uncommon opportunity to understand the selection and display of natural history specimens in a nineteenth-century setting. The variety of animals on display is particularly notable, with animals ranging from several big cats to a beaver. Numerous birds are displayed, and although many of the smaller birds are perhaps too indistinct to be firmly identified, there is certainly at least one penguin and several other well-known species can clearly be distinguished. The way in which the specimens are displayed, and particularly the fact that all of the glass doors are open and several pieces of laboratory equipment are casually arranged, strongly suggests that this is more than a simple snapshot. Unfortunately the author of the note on the back of the photograph has not specified the museum, which remains a tantalising mystery. It can be confidently asserted that it is the right wall of the room: the author originally wrote "gauche", but realising the error, has struck it out and added "droit". It may never be possible to discover the location of the collection, which is likely that of a natural history museum, perhaps attached to a university or teaching facility; having said that, it may even be the rooms of a dealer.

Philips' New Series of Travelling Maps . Queensland with the unsettled territories adjoining the Gulf of Carpenteria

London & Liverpool: George Philip & Son, circa, 1880. Folding map measuring 690 x 570 mm., printed in colour on original linen backing, 16 pp. index; quite fine in original blue cloth case lettered in black and gilt, a few spots. Large and handsome map of Queensland from the uniform series of traveller's maps issued by George Philip & Son. In addition to rich topographic detail, land divisions, rivers and goldfields, the map details principal features of the Great Barrier Reef, indicating the ribbon reefs stretching to the north of Port Douglas and Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea. The map was issued by the London based cartographic publisher George Philip, one of the most prosperous and energetic mapmakers of nineteenth-century England. Philip was born into a devout Calvinist family and two of his brothers went on to become preachers. Although a successful businessman his philanthropic background gave Philip a strong motivation to printing educational and instructional material at prices accessible to working folk. This is reflected in his range of maps for emigrants to Australia and New Zealand, and his decision to publish an atlas for Australian schoolchildren in 1865. Significantly, Philips was also an innovator in the use of colour lithography for the production of commercial maps. The map was prepared for publication by William Shawe, a fellow of the Royal Society noted by Tooley for his cartography of Africa. Shawe also prepared the Western Australia map published by Philips in the uniform traveller's maps series.

Grammar of the Narrinyeri Tribe of Australian Aborigines

Adelaide: E. Spiller, Government Printer, 1880. Octavo, 24 pages, a little creased and a few spots, especially early and late, tasteful modern bookplate; very good, printed paper wrapper, very slight rust to staples. A rare grammar of the Narrinyeri (now Ngarrindjeri), who inhabited the country on the shores of Encounter Bay and the lakes Alexandrina, Albert, and Coorong, extending along the Murray River in South Australia. The language is now listed as extinct. The work is written by the Reverend George Taplin, a Congregationalist minister who arrived in Adelaide in 1849. He opened a school in Port Elliot in 1854, and in 1859 he was appointed as teacher in the lower Murray districts by the Aborigines Friends Association. His accomplished and well-regarded work in philology borrows from earlier attempts by the Lutheran Missionary, the Reverend H.A.E. Meyer, but is more firmly based in his own lengthy study of the language. His work was widely adopted and used by his more famous successor, Lancelot Edward Threlkeld. He died of heart disease in 1879. First published in 1878, both editions of this work are uncommon.

Phoenix Park in Dublin with Wellington Monument.

Dublin, 1880 - Original 19th century Gouache with title in ink mounted separately. Dublin, c. 1880. 15 cm high x 19 cm wide. Excellent condition of this very accomplished and atmospheric work, capturing the full romance of the early 19th century Phoenix Park. The Wellington Monument (or more correctly the Wellington Testimonial; Irish: Teistiméireacht Wellington) is an obelisk located in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, Ireland. The testimonial is situated at the southeast end of the Park, overlooking Kilmainham and the River Liffey. The structure is 62 metres (203 ft) tall, making it the largest obelisk in Europe. The Wellington Testimonial was built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Wellington, an Irishman, also known as the 'Iron Duke', was born in Dublin. Originally planned to be located in Merrion Square, it was built in the Phoenix Park after opposition from the square's residents. The Testimonial was designed by the architect Sir Robert Smirke and the foundation stone was laid in 1817. However, in 1820 it ran out of construction funds and therefore remained unfinished until 18 June 1861 when it was opened to the public. There were also plans for a statue of Wellesley on horseback but the shortage of funds ruled that out. (Wikipedia) Phoenix Park (Irish: Páirc an Fhionnuisce) is an urban park in Dublin, Ireland, lying 2–4 km west of the city centre, north of the River Liffey. Its 11 km perimeter wall encloses 707 hectares (1,750 acres), one of the largest walled city parks in Europe. It includes large areas of grassland and tree-lined avenues, and since the seventeenth century has been home to a herd of wild Fallow deer. The English name comes from the Irish fionn uisce meaning "clear water". The Irish Government is lobbying UNESCO to have the park designated as a world heritage site. (Wikipedia) Gouache, also spelled guache, is a type of paint consisting of pigment, a binding agent (usually gum arabic), and sometimes added inert material, designed to be used in an opaque method. It also refers to paintings that use this opaque method. The name derives from the Italian guazzo. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater reflective qualities. (Wikipedia). Excellent condition of this very accomplished and atmospheric work, capturing the full romance of the early 19th century Phoenix Park.

Moss Vale: The Sanitorium (sic) of the South, and its Surroundings

Sydney: Mills, Pile and Gilchrist, Auctioneers, 1880. Quarto, 14pp., six plates and three folding plans, lower blank margin of one plan a little chipped and stained, wrappers spotted with heavy wear to the rear cover, a little water-staining affects some plates yet quite sound in a custom built red cloth folding case. A scarce early prospectus advertising land subdivisions in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, with six lithographic plates of the region including Bong Bong Church, the first permanent church in the region, and the Fitzroy Falls. This publication includes three impressive folding plans: the first details residential subdivisions of the Moss Vale township, with some lots numbered by hand. The second plan features suburban lots adjacent to Whites Creek while the third promotes spacious villa sites at Bowral north of the Wingecarribee river. Each of the plans advertises an auction sale on site, and notes that a special train service departing from Sydney has been organised to convey purchasers to the sale free of charge. The descriptive text paints a glowing picture of the Southern Highlands, and is accompanied by six rather good lithographic plates depicting natural features and other attractions, including Fitzroy Falls, Mount Meryla and the eminent country estate of Throsby Park. We have been able to locate a single copy of this work, held by the State Library of New South Wales.

        Digging for Gold

Australia: 1880 after sketches of, 1854. Oil painting, signed and dated; 950 x 560 mm, framed in cedar. M. Rare goldfields painting. A splendid goldfields painting. Surprisingly few paintings of the gold rushes survive - conditions on the diggings did not encourage the few artists there to carry the materials for academic painting. The visual record of the goldfields are almost exclusively confined to more portable drawings and watercolours, or to scenes printed by city publishers from sketched originals. In this instance the artist has produced a major oil painting from sketches made at the diggings. 'Digging for gold was executed in 1880…in this painting the artists's interest in pictorial accuracy has been supplanted by a literal interpretation. Stocqueler revisits the goldfields with analytical intent, and the significance of landscape and environment further overshadows that of the individual. This panoramic depiction…enables the viewer to witness the profound changes mining brought to the environment' (Karen Quinlan Gold and Civilization page 67). Edwin Stocqueler (1829-1895) was born in India and emigrated to Australia from England in the early 1850s. He was presumably lured to Victoria by the goldfields, but soon established himself as an artist, having apparently studied drawing in London. During much of the 1850s, he seems to have worked on dioramas - the nineteenth century equivalent of newsreels. According to the Bendigo Advertiser of 1 August, 1857, "Mr. Stocqueler is deserving of a rich reward for the perseverance and determination with which he has surmounted innumerable difficulties… [his diorama] reflects great credit on Mr. Stocqueler as an artist, and we trust he will meet with the patronage he merits". Although few of his paintings have survived, Stocqueler's paintings provide quite specific details of the Australian goldfields. He is later recorded as working in America and South Africa.

North-West Exploration. Journal of Expedition from DeGrey to Port Darwin

Perth: Richard Pether, Government Printer, 1880. Folio, 44 pp., eight sepia tone lithographed plates and a large folding map; a fine copy in original boards with printed titling label. Rare an important account of exploration in the remote north-west of Australia, including the discovery of the Ord River in the Kimberley region. This was the only major publication relating to Alexander Forrest's important expedition in the north-west: 'would grace any collection' (Australian Rare Books). Alexander Forrest (1849-1901) was a younger brother of the explorer and surveyor John Forrest and served on several of his expeditions. This book recounts Alexander's most important exploratory work and is remarkable for its eight fine lithographed plates and splendid folding map. Departing February 1879, the expedition followed the Fitzroy River almost 400 kilometres until progress was halted by the rugged King Leopold Range. Circumventing this obstacle revealed good new country named the Nicholson Plains and led the men to the Ord River, now the site of a major post-war irrigation project. After much further travelling, during which time rations and water were frequently short, the party arrived at Darwin in October of 1879. Australian Rare Books notes the 'uncharacteristically elaborate form' of Forrest's account, with a suite of eight fine plates unusual for a government publication: 'Indeed, it has every appearance of being published as much for public sale as for use by members of Parliament. Because of the less austere style of publication and the importance of the expedition itself, this volume is quite sought after by collectors and would grace any collection.' Given the importance of the expedition and rarity of its published account, this outstanding copy - preserved as issued in original boards - makes a most desirable addition to any collection of Australian inland exploration.

ANNUAL MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, TO THE TWO HOUSES OF CONGRESS AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE THIRD SESSION OF THE FORTY-SIXTH CONGRESS

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1880. First Edition. Wraps. Inscription a little light, but very clear. There is a vertical crease down the center of the pamphlet. Very Good. Printed green-gray wraps; 34 pages. SIGNED on the top margin of the front cover "With my Compliments/R. B. Hayes" by the President. Hayes covers much ground in this address beginning with the statement: "Continued opposition to the full and free enjoyment of the rights of citizenship, conferred upon the colored people by the recent amendments to the Constitution, still prevails in several of the late slaveholding States.... It is the desire of the good people of the whole country that sectionalism as a factor in our politics should disappear." Hayes also proposes reforming the civil service to eliminate corruption and expresses his wish to eradicate the evils of Mormon polygamy in Utah. He discusses foreign relations at some length and concludes with recommendations specific to Washington including its water supply, railroad depots, and the completion of the Washington Monument. Hayes is quite uncommon in signed books and pamphlets and when found are usually examples from his library rather than his own work.

Die römische Campagna mit der Via Appia.

1880. Öl über schwarzer Feder, auf Malpappe, rechts unten bezeichnet, datiert und signiert "Via Appia 23 April 1880 HThom(a)". 34,8:53,5 cm. Mit kleinen Retuschen. Provenienz: Sammlung Simon Ravenstein, Frankfurt a.M. Literatur: H. Thode, Thoma. Des Meisters Gemälde, Stuttgart/Leipzig, DVA, 1909, Abb. S. 156 unten..
