John Inglesant; A Romance.

Privately printed. Cornish Brothers. Birmingham First edition 1880 - pp. (viii), (9)-577, (i) blank. Original vellum with red lettering, top edge gilt, uncut, small tear at the head of the spine and a couple of nicks at the foot, paste-downs foxed, book-plate of ROBERT C. R. JORDAN M.D. and a presentation inscription to him from 'the author', a good copy. *Privately printed by Shorthouse in an edition of 100 copies, 75 for friends and 25 for sale. Then issued in 1881 in a trade edition which became hugely popular, rapidly selling 9,000 copies in the first year and 80,000 copies overall. SHORTHOUSE (1834-1903) was born and died in Birmingham, the eldest son of Joseph Shorthouse and his wife, Mary Ann, both of whom belonged to the Society of Friends. Joseph had inherited a chemical works and at sixteen, his son went into this family business. He had, however, been much attracted to literary work, reading widely, and writing for the Friends' Essay Society. An epileptic attack in 1862 left him invalided, and with time and resources from his family business, he started to write a Philosophical Romance, in 1866, much influenced by Ruskin, the Pre-Raphaelites and his conception of seventeenth-century Anglicanism. He worked at this novel for ten years, finishing in 1876 but failing to generate any commercial enthusiasm. It lay dormant until 1880 and was published privately in Birmingham in that year. A copy was shown to Mrs. Humphry Ward who, considerably impressed, passed it to the publisher Alexander Macmillan. He was immediately keen to publish and it came out in a trade 2-decker in 1881, to a clamorous reception. It struck all the right notes for the times - romantic, sermonising, philosophical and devoid of humour, it delighted a wide audience including Thomas Henry Huxley and Philip Gosse, Cardinal Manning and Gladstone and Charlotte Yonge. The book acquired a cult status, the first novel of a mystic drawn from the Birmingham business-industrial class. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Fool's Errand, by One of the Fools; The Famous Romance of American History. New, Enlarged, and Illustrated Edition. To which is Added, by the Same Author, Part II. The Invisible Empire: A Concise Review of the Epoch on Which the Tale is Based

New York: Fords, Howard, & Hulbert 1880 - 8vo., contemporary quarter morocco and marble boards lettered in gilt; with minor rubbing to extremities. Enlarged, illustrated "testimonial" edition. BAL 20348. A major presentation copy, inscribed: "Gen. Chester A. Arthur - Dear Sir: Allow me to present you this volume in testimony of my high esteem. Respectfully, A. W. Tourgée, Aug. 26th/80," on the front endpaper; with Arthur's library bookplate on the front pastedown ---- Throughout his long career, Tourgée advocated equal rights for African Americans. Born in Ohio, and educated at the University of Rochester, he enlisted in the Union army and saw action at Bull Run and Chickamauga. After the Civil War, Tourgée moved to North Carolina, where he became involved in Reconstruction politics. During his tenure as a Supreme Court judge, Tourgée effectively challenged the Ku Klux Klan. His appeals to Congress revealing the extent of white supremacist violence, helped speed passage of laws authorizing the use of federal troops against the Klan. After 1877, he returned to the North, where he expressed disappointment over the ultimate failure of Reconstruction in his autobiographical novel, “A Fool’s Errand.” Published anonymously in November 1879, “A Fool’s Errand” sold more than forty thousand copies within six months. Like Harriet Beecher Stowe’s fictional exposé on the plight of African Americans, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” Tourgée’s 361-page muckraking novel achieved financial success and critical acclaim as a classic of unflinching social commentary. Encouraged by the accolades accorded “A Fool’s Errand,” Tourgée produced a second edition of the work, supplemented by 136 pages of documentary evidence based upon public records and eyewitness accounts. The testimonies regarding the motives, organization, activities, and victims of the Ku Klux Klan in the new section of “A Fool’s Errand,” entitled “The Invisible Empire,” provoked further public outrage over human rights violations. The testimonial edition of “A Fool’s Errand” was published less than two weeks before the Republican National Convention convened in early June 1880. It appeared with Tourgée’s name on the title page. The surprise disclosure and “Invisible Empire” supplement served to further heighten interest in the bestseller and perhaps influence the convention’s unprecedented endorsement of federal government-supported public education, an issue that Tourgée had long advocated. After Grant’s third-term nomination proved unsuccessful, Tourgée backed the convention’s compromise nominee James Abram Garfield, an acquaintance since childhood, and running mate Chester A. Arthur, the former collector of the Port of New York and lawyer, who had earlier defended the civil rights of free blacks and fugitive slaves. Months after the Republican Convention, Tourgée presented Arthur with this copy of the testimonial edition of “A Fool’s Errand,” "in testimony of my high esteem.” An historically significant copy of the most important fictional exposé on Reconstruction with a most distinguished provenance [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Songs of Springtide

London: Chatto & Windus, 1880. First edition. 8vo. 135, [32, ads, dated April. 1880] pp. Original blue cloth. A very good copy . Inscribed "To the Rev. Alexander B. Grosart with the best reagrds of/Algernon Swinburne/ May 1880." "Grosart, Alexander Balloch (1827-1899), literary scholar and theologian...Grosart's reputation was as a great Elizabethan and Jacobean scholar. He reprinted thirty-nine volumes under the general title of the Fuller Worthies Library (1868-76), including authors such as Donne, Herbert, and Crashaw. This was followed by eighteen volumes of another series entitled Occasional Issues of Unique and very Rare Books (1875-83), which was privately printed. This series, like the others, included a list of the subscribers to each volume, alphabetically and democratically arranged, and found among these lists were such well-known names as Edmund Gosse, George Saintsbury, A. C. Swinburne, H. H. Furness, F. S. Palgrave, and Henry Morley....Grosart reprinted and edited volumes for the Chetham Society, for the Roxburghe Club, and for the Camden Society, in addition to a number of volumes not associated with any series or society. One estimate puts the total number of volumes he reprinted and/or edited at 300. He also added to his editions of the works of the puritan divines a small number of religious publications. And he was himself the author of hymns and religious poems which were collected and published in 1890 under the title Songs of the Day and Night, or, Three Centuries of Original Hymns. Possibly his proudest moment was when he was thanked by Tennyson for his dedication to the poet of his edition of Spenser (Letters of ... Tennyson, 3.298, 301-3)." (DNB)

Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de la flore et de la pomone de l' Ile de Java peints d'après nature par Madame Berthe Hoola van Nooten. Troisieme edition

Brussels and Leipzig: Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt, 1880. Folio. Expertly bound to style in red half morocco over contemporary light green glazed paper-covered boards, titled in gilt on flat spine Third, and improved edition of this magnificent display of spectacular Javanese fruits and flowers, their bright colours ideally suited to the then new technique of chromolithography. 'Europeans who beheld these plants for the first time... could not but have been moved to wonder and amazement' ("Oak Spring Flora") Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885), a latter-day Maria Sibylla Merian, produced the present work as a heroic response to circumstances which left her on Java, a widow in her early twenties with a family to support and little money, certainly not enough to pay for her family's passage home to Belgium. 'Aware of the vogue in Europe for exotic flora, she decided to take advantage of her enforced exile and put to use the skill at flower painting that she had no doubt acquired as a girl. Thus she prepared forty magnificent plates for Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'Ile de Java ... [van Nooten] was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics. The reader's eye is immediately captured by the dark leaves, shown furled or crumpled or partly nibbled away by insects, the delicately rendered details of the follicles and seeds, and the heavy clusters of flowers that cascade down the page. The excellent reproduction of the artist's drawings in the form of chromolithographs lends an added tactility to these striking images' ( Oak Spring Flora ) The work consists of a lithographed dedication (in rhyme) to the Queen of the Netherlands. This is followed by a preface in which the author hints at the tragic personal circumstances which led her to seek a publisher for the work, and the forty plates, each of which is accompanied by detailed text in French and English giving a description as well as occasional information on the plants' culinary, medical, religious and other uses. The plates depict a mixture of indigenous, naturalised and introduced plants and include shrubs, flowering trees and, perhaps the most striking of all, 16 portraits of plants with edible fruits: pomelo, rambutan, mangosteen, custard-apple, bread-fruit, mango, bananas, star-fruit and papaya amongst others. Great Flower Books (1990) p. 103; Landwehr 80; Nissen BBI 93; Oak Spring Flora 87; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3025. (22 x 15 1/4 inches). Half-title, title, dedication to the Queen of the Netherlands and foreword in French, parallel text in French and English. 40 chromolithographed plates by P. Depannemaeker after Hoola van Nooten.

        The Seven Lamps of Architecture

Orpington, Kent: George Allen,, 1880. With illustrations, drawn by the author. New edition. Folio. Original blue-grey printed boards, printed spine label, edges uncut and partly unopened. Protected in a good quality tan morocco-backed folding case, spine lettered gilt. 14 tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates by Ruskin. Joints a little chipped in places, spine toned and finger-marked, internally fine. On its first publication in May 1849, The Seven Lamps of Architecture was the first of Ruskin's works to carry his name, and the first to be illustrated. It was to prove a key work in the Gothic revival, notably encouraging the use of Gothic in secular buildings. Ruskin's intervention was theoretical more than practical: the "lamps" of architecture were moral categories – sacrifice, truth, power, beauty, life, memory, and obedience – abstract notions in themselves, but which for Ruskin were manifested in particular Gothic buildings in Italy and northern France.

Lord Stanley engraving Sir Frederick Arthur, 1st Baron Stanley of Preston, 16th Earl of Derby (Lord Stanley of Preston) (1841-1908)

published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C. [1880], London - TRULY RARE. WE CAN FIND NO OTHER COPIES OF THIS ENGRAVING. No date but probably circa 1880 when he would be about 39 years old. [Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby]"Lord Stanley" engraving London published by Morris & Co. 392 Strand W.C. Drawn by C.W. Walton. Paper size is 17 1/2îî x 23 5/8î. Plate mark size is 10 1/2î x 13î. Image size is 5î x 7î.Signature Imprint: Lord Stanley ( [facsimile signature] ) Stanley family motto, "Sans Changer" or without changing. Some soiling overall on paper (but not on actual image) and top left corner bent and dark marks. Bottom left corner with darker mark and small bent corner. Overall condition is good+. In 1892, this Lord Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby gave a treasured national icon ó the Stanley Cup to symbolize hockey Championship in Canada. It is the same Stanley Cup the National Hockey League competes for each year now. He was the 6th Governor General of Canada., National Portrait Gallery, London has only one similar engraving of Lord Stanley where he is older and their different Lord Stanley engraving is printed later. , ìThere are 13 portrait lithographs by the artist (Walton) in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. Many of the works he produced were of contemporary figures, including Francis Thomas de Grey Cowper, Seventh Earl Cowper (1834 -1905), who became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Charlotte Anne Montagu-Douglas-Scott (nÈe Thynne), Duchess of Buccleuch (1811-1895), who served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria. Some of Waltonís portraits were used to illustrate books. It seems that many of his earlier works were published by the firm of Morris & Co., 392 Strand, but he later published his own works from 103, Shaftesbury Avenue. Interestingly, a lithograph by Walton of Philip William Skynner Miles in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery was published by ëMorris, Walton & Coí, so it seems he may have briefly been in partnership with Morris & Co.î quoted from Philippa Martin, Curator, Information and Research (Historical) UK Government Art Collection [Attributes: First Edition]

The Works of Thomas de Quincey

Edinburgh - Adam and Charles Black 1880 - Complete set of sixteen leatherbound volumes with marble paper covered boards, marble paper pastedowns, and marbled foredge, with eleven frontispieces and a facsimile of the original manuscript of 'Shakespeare'. Thomas de Quincey (15 August 1785 8 December 1859) was an English author and intellectual, best known for his Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821). Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821) is an autobiographical account written by Thomas De Quincey, about his laudanum (opium and alcohol) addiction and its effect on his life. First published anonymously in September and October 1821 in the London Magazine, the Confessions was released in book form in 1822, and again in 1856, in an edition revised by de Quincey. From its first appearance, the literary style of the Confessions attracted attention and comment. De Quincey was deeply read in the English literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and assimilated influences and models from Sir Thomas Browne and other writers. In the early 1850s, De Quincey prepared the first collected edition of his works for publisher James Hogg. For that edition, he undertook a large-scale revision of the Confessions, more than doubling the work's length. Most notably, he expanded the opening section on his personal background, until it consumed more than two-thirds of the whole. The Confessions maintained a place of primacy in De Quincey's literary output, and his literary reputation, from its first publication, and it went through many editions. Yet from its publication, De Quincey's Confessions was criticized for presenting a picture of the opium experience that was too positive and too enticing to readers. De Quincey attempted to address this type of criticism. When the 1821 original was printed in book form the following year, he added an Appendix on the withdrawal process; and he inserted significant material on the medical aspects of opium into his 1856 revision. More generally, De Quincey's Confessions influenced psychology and abnormal psychology, and attitudes towards dreams and imaginative literature. The volume titles are: Confessions of an English Opium-EaterRecollections of the LakesLast Days of Immanuel Kant and other writingsThe English Mail Coach and other writingsDr Samuel Parr or Whiggism in its Relation to Literature and other writingsRichard Bentley and other writingsProtestantism and other EssaysLeaders in Literature, with a notice of Traditional Errors Affecting ThemThe Caesars and Other PapersStyle and Rhetoric and Other PapersColeridge and Opium-Eating and Other WritingsSpeculations Literary and PhilosophicLogic of Political Economy and Other PapersAutobiographical Sketches 1790 - 1803Biographies of Shakespeare, Pope, Goethe, and Schiller, and On The Political Parties of Modern EnglandSuspiria de Profundis, Being a Sequel to the Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, and other Miscellaneous WritingsCondition: The bindings are tight and firm with all covers and pages securely attached. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing to the spines and boards and discolouration to the spines. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. The spotting is slightly heavier to the blank endpapers. There is a rubber stamp mark to the front blank endpaper of Volume II. There is a cigarette burn to the fold-out facsimile which does affect a small portion of the text. Overall the volumes are in good only condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Chess Montly

London, 1880-1881 iv+380 pages with illustrations, diagrams, tables, and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in quarter black leather with gilt lettering to spine and blue marbled boards. From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume II (2). (Betts: 7-25). First edition. The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having J H Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames. In addition, Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy.Dino Ruggieri was born in, Pigüé a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri?s family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from Pigüé. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in Pigüé, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 in 2009 at the age of 88.Condition:0Corners bumped, some foxing and age toning, Ruggieri's stamp to front end paper else a very good copy of a scarce item.
