The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America in Congress. [Benjamin Tyler-Giles Lithograph printing of the Declaration of Independence]

Durham and New York: The Giles Lithographic and Liberty Printing Co. for Mess. W. Duke, Sons & Company, 1880. Broadside. Very Good. Lithographic print on parchment. Approximately 20.5" x 27". Original metal trim still present at top and bottom. Minor edge wear. Three professionally repaired short marginal tears. Small wrinkles at lower margin. This print of the Declaration of Independence is of the famous facsimile originally published by Benjamin Owen Tyler, a self-taught calligrapher, in 1818. Tyler's documents were the first to produce the Declaration in script and included amazing facsimile signatures of the signers. "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the Facsimiles exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every Capital as in the original. . . . [The signatures] are curiously exact imitations, so much so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them . . . from the original." (Bidwell, 1989) Tyler's documents are among the most sought after printings of the Declaration and over the last ten years have sold for between $7,500 and $35,000. As noted by Bidwell, the Giles lithographs are the only exact reproductions of Tyler's work. These were produced as premiums for Duke tobacco products and could only be obtained by collecting certificates from 75 packets of Duke products. As such these lithographs are scarcer than the Tyler originals. As of 2014, no examples are listed in OCLC, and Bidwell only found one example at the New York Public Library as well as a photostat reproduction at the American Antiquarian Society. Between ABPC, AE, and Worthpoint, only two examples are shown as ever having been sold at auction; one for $1,024 in 2009 and one for $7,995 in 2011.

        Souvenir de Karlsbad

Decorated Cloth. Very Good. N.d., circa 1880. 11 by 7 cm. Comical leporello, with ten panels of color illustration with somewhat racy, ribald humor mostly depicting men and women taking baths. It is known that the same leporello was sold at different resorts using different names. Still, it is a scarce item, and one hardly likely to find its way into a library back when given its risque, racy content. Dating is based on fashions, including men's hairstyles and women's physiques, which are shown in the buff, as well as the Renaissance-style endpapers. Light soiling and wear.

TABLE MOUNTAIN, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

Cape Town: 1880 - At top, an S. Hampton drawn image, 2-9/16" x 6-1/8", depicting Cape Town harbor, with Table Mountain, Devil's Peak & "The Lion" in the background. Lithographed by H. Doree, Burg St., Cape Town. A poetical tribute, "Kingly Mountain, soaring high . Imperial monarch of the plain!", to this prominent geographical sentinel watching over Cape Town, which, from the earliest to the present day, remains a popular attraction to the populace below.ÊThe author a bit of an enigma. Theal records no other works by Crewes, with additional research suggesting he was a Cape Town photographer, having a studio, during the early 1880s, at the broadside's printed address: 42, Adderley-street. With respect to the piece itself, we are unable to find this literary work recorded in any major on-line database, including that of the University of South Africa, nor do we find it in the NUC.A rare 19th C. Cape Town publication. Age toning & spotting to paper. 5 faint horizontal fold-lines. A VG copy. 13-1/8" x 7-7/16". Broadside, printed recto only. 11 stanzas of verse. Text double column, with thin vertical rule dividing. Signed in type at conclusion: "Charles F. Crewes. / Cape Town, June 2, 1880. / 42, Adderley-street."

        Arpophyllum giganteum

Henry John Elwes (1846-1922) was a British botanist, naturalist and author, celebrated for his travels throughout Asia, including the Himalayan Mountains, with the Geographical Section of the British Association and noted for his collection of lily specimens. In 1880 Elwes published a spectacular collection of prints depicting various species of one of the world's favorite flowers, the lily. The ?Monograph of the Genus Lilium? is the result of a collaborative effort, the organization and text by Elwes and the images by renowned botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch. Although Fitch's drawings for Elwes' ?Genus Lilium? were the last great works of his career, in his lifetime, Fitch produced nearly 10,000 illustrations. This hand-colored folio size lithograph, Arpophyllum giganteum, measures 17.5? x 12.5? and is in excellent condition with cropped edges. This flower, commonly known at the Hyacinth orchid, is colored with rich green stems and leaves and vibrant purple flowers, each expertly detailed.

        Chinesisches Ahnenportrait.

China, um 1880. - Papier, Seide bemalt. 166:100 cm. Die reiche Bildsymbolik (u. a. Eingerollt. Vgl. Noda, Renate. Grab- & Ahnenkult. In: Gold und Jade. Sensationsfunde aus chinesischen Herrschergräbern. Kat. Kunsthalle Leoben, 2007, Kat. Nr. 156f. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Tibetan Blockprints / Undated Tibetan Buddhist Religious Texts, circa 1800s

Unknown: Unknown, 1880 Date undetermined [probaby 19th century] / place undetermined [probably Mongolia]. 26 parchment leaves, 3.5" tall x 8.75" long, block printed on both sides (except for two), with some hand annotation [also undated]. At least one of the leaves has an embossed watermark in Cyrillic [Russian] characters. Marginal age-toning, some leaves with moisture stains not affecting the legibility of the text. Previous owner was told they these came from a Mongolian monastery in which Tibetan Buddhism was spoken and, of course, written. There are four separate sets of folios [leaves] and at least 2 full texts among them, most likely all being prayer texts used in daily liturgies, read or chanted during Buddhist services. Their size and length appear to be that. Two sets of these folios may or may not be complete books - those who have looked at Tibetan numbering systems will know that difficulty - but two texts are very clearly complete books. There are 26 folios (leaves) in all, with writing on both sides (except for two), hence 50 pages of actual text. There were clearly several hands at work in these; see scans. L103
