London: [Printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press for] C. Kegan Paul & Co, 1880. No. 39 OF 50 LARGE PAPER COPIES, signed by the printer. This is a famous poet's most famous poem, beautifully printed and offered here in a very well-preserved, exuberantly decorated binding. First published in 1850, the present elegy is a tribute to Tennyson's college friend, Arthur Henry Hallam (1811-33), son of the famous historian Henry Hallam (1777-1859). Tennyson's first verses had been published before he was 20, but after Hallam's death, he published nothing for nine years, although all the while he was working on this poem, the product of protracted meditation. Written in rhyming quatrains, the poem moves from grief and doubt to certainty that the universe is purposeful. It was a sensational best-seller, striking a deep note of resonance with Victorian readers and the queen herself, who told the poet that "Next to the Bible, 'In Memoriam' is my comfort." Thomson says that the work "has been discussed from every point of view--proof of the profound influence it exercised over English thought for half a century." The work had major repercussions in Tennyson's professional and personal lives. It inspired Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, to petition that its author be named Poet Laureate of the realm, to succeed the recently deceased Wordsworth. And it left Tennyson financially secure enough to enter the married life, a step that had been delayed for 10 years for pecuniary reasons. Our Large Paper Copy has margins occupying more than twice as much area as the text and is printed with Whittingham's usual excellence on thick, creamy paper. There is a hint of the Moorish in the intricately gilt binding, which sports the exhibition stamp that one invariably sees on especially fine work from the Zaehnsdorf workshop.. 204 x 131 mm. (8 x 5 1/4"). 1 p.l. (limitation), 281, [1] pp. No. 39 OF 50 LARGE PAPER COPIES, signed by the printer. VERY ATTRACTIVE CITRON CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY ZAEHNSDORF (stamp-signed on front doublure and with the firm's stamp on rear free endleaf), covers with mitered gilt frame enclosing large cornerpieces filled with swirling vines of azured gilt, the whole around an ovoid central panel featuring a gilt arabesque of delicate interlacing, flat spine tooled with curling azured gilt vines, gilt titling, BURGUNDY POLISHED CALF DOUBLURES tooled with a gilt strapwork design similar to the covers and framed by densely gilt turn-ins incorporating still more swirling vines, burgundy watered silk endleaves with gilt fleuron at corners, top edge gilt. With engraved frontispiece portrait. A Large Paper Copy. Spine slightly and evenly sun-darkened, a hint of rubbing along bottom edge, otherwise VERY FINE, the binding lustrous and scarcely worn, and the text clean, fresh, and bright, with immense margins.

Zeshin also did a great number of the most superb lacquer ware designs, may inspired or tested in his woodblock prints. he remains one of the highest masters of all time, respected as one of the all time ten best from Japan. His stature continues unquestioned, and admired by museums and collectors throughout the world. His "Zen" simple designs reflect his keen ability to express simplicity which is essentially Japanese.

Gotha: Friedrich Andreas Perthes, 1880-81 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth decorated in black and lettered in gilt, marbled edges, white glossy endpapers, volume II with decorative endpapers, marbled edges. Housed in a custom red quarter morocco slipcase and red cloth chemise. Vol I: spine faded, recased with ?new endpapers, a couple of spots to contents; vol. II: contemporary ownership inscription in ink on title-page. A little colour restoration to head of spine, hinges partly cracked but holding. An excellent set. First editions of both parts in the original German. Throughout the 1870s Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) published stories for adults and children based around her reminiscences of growing up in rural Switzerland. But huge success came with the publication of Heidi, the most important Swiss contribution to children's literature after the "Swiss Family Robinson" of J. R. Wyss. As usual with Christmas books, the first book was published in December 1879 but dated the following year. Spyri wrote the novel in just four weeks. It was first published anonymously in German, and quickly became an international best-seller and has been translated into 50 languages (English in 1885 by Charles Tritten who later published the continuations "Heidi Grows Up" and "Heidi's Children"), sold 50 million copies, and inspired a whole series of films. Volume I was issued without the author's name on the title page but "Von der Verfasserin von 'Ein Blatt auf Vrony's Grab'" ("From the author of."); volume II is titled "Heidi kann gebrauchen, was es gelernt hat" and was published as part V of "Geschichten für Kinder und auch für Solche, welche die Kinder lieb haben", this time under Spyri's name. Perhaps because of the fragile paper used, the first editions of the two parts of Heidi are scarce. Doderer III, 447; Hürlimann 310; Seebass II, 1930 ("rare", vol. 2 only); Wegehaupt III, 3633 (vol. 2 only); Weilenmann 3216 & 3233. [Attributes: First Edition]

Dairy Farming Being the Theory, Practice, and Methods of Dairying

London: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co.(ca. 1880). I simply don't have any faults to tell about on this book; it is in fine, lovely, unworn condition with no handwriting in it, straight, clean and tight, with no soiling and no wear to binding or plates. Gorgeous fine binding with Art Nouveau-type binding with half red leather with 5 raised spine bands and gilt printing and decorations on spine, marbled boards, and all page edges gilt. 25 fascinating delicately and beautifully colored full page chromolithographic plates plus B&W text illustrations. Includes a double page color map: 'Dairy Farming in America - Copied from the 9th U.S. Census' measuring approximate ly 10-1/2" x 16" (in color, and fine condition). Presumed 1st edition (copyright page blank and undated but ca. early 1880s). 10-7/8" tall x 8-3/4" wide x 2" thick (quite heavy). Called for errata sheet bound in. 570 pages including Index, plus 4 pages (2 double-sided sheets) of ads. One plate is listed as being at page 551 and is actually bound in at 556. Laid in is a contemporary to the book newsletter printed on blue paper, 4 pages (large sheet folded once, printed both sides, entitled 'Land', which is an ad for 'A Journal for all interested in Landed and House Property', on the front page, an ad for 'The Livestock Journal and Fancier's Gazette' on the last page, and lists books published by this publisher on the middle two pages. It was not until the late 1800s that cattle breeds were developed specifically for dairy purposes. This book was an effort in the late 19th century to encourage local dairying by teaching the methods needed for raising dairy cattle and producing milk, butter and cheese, and doing so in a safe-for-consumption and standardized manner, instead of importing too much product. Also, in an effort to improve the quality of American dairy products and to make them more acceptable abroad, the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) established the Division of Agrostology and the Dairy Division in 1895, and used some of the information first made available in this book, including the effects of forage grasses on the flavor, odor, and quality of milk and milk products. The watercolor drawing on the left depicts different types of pasture grasses.; Color Illustrations; 10-7/8" x 8-3/4"; 570 incl. Index pages, 41, 44, 45, 46, 49, 60, F/NONE

Ide: With A Minute and Interesting Account of One of the Largest Emigrating Companies, (3000 Miles Over Land), From the East to the Pacific Coast. And What is Claimed as the Most Authentic and Reliable Account of "The Virtual Conquest of California, in June, 1846, by the Bear Flag Party," as Given by its Leader, The Late Hon. William Brown Ide. [Claremont, New Hampshire]: Published for the Subscribers, [1880]. [8],[2], [2, half-title: Scraps of California History Never Before Published, verso blank], [1]- 239, [1, "The Inscription"] pp. Inscribed to the New Hampshire Historical society by the nephew of William B. Ide, dated 1904 on the half-title. No other copy of this variant with the wrappers and additional text has sold at auction aside from present copy and the Larson copy of 1995, since 1962. This copy, gifted to the New Hampshire historical society (the state of publication), is bound with the original printed wrappers for "Scraps of California" still intact and bound in along with the text. Additionally it has the preliminary leaves of Ide's follow-up work entitled Who Conquered California? Back cover has at top a caption reading: "More Testimony in Favor of the Efficiency of the ‘Bear Flag Party’ in Bringing about the Conquest of California," followed by reference to and quotations from Tinkham’s History of Stockton, 1880. The preliminary 10 pages in this variant has favorable reviews and a criticism of the Upham Life of Fremont and of T. W. Higginson’s account of the events in California of 1846. Overall an about fine copy. "William Ide was the leader of the Bear Flag movement at Sonoma, and has often been referred to as the "President" of California. He was a man of high ideals and integrity. This little book is source material, and the only volume published thus far that deals exclusively with this incident of California history. Ide died in California in 1852. The book was set in type by hand by Simeon Ide, William's brother, when he was 86 years old. The edition was small and copies are now extremely rare. J. G. L. [J. Gregg Layne, historian and editor of the Quarterly of the Historical Society of Southern California.]" (Zamorano Eighty, 45.) This self-published volume was printed on a small press by the 86 year-old Simeon Ide in apparently very limited numbers. Mintz lists that only 80 copies were printed. Graff 2059. Howes I4.

First edition. Mexico City: Imprenta de la Reforma, 1880 / 82/ 83. First edition. Three volumes, large quartos, pp xxxv, 515, 78, and with 67 plates; frontis., vi, 534, 7, and 70 plates; 576 (of 633), with 56 plates (of 68). Total number of plates is 193, all full-page, hors-du-texte. The first two volumes deal with Mexico City and its environs; vol. 3 deals with the rest of the country. The lithograph plates in these volumes are of very high quality, on especially thin paper used to enhance the imprint, showing everything of interest in the city at the time, along with descriptive and historical text by the author. The plates as well as the text are of great value in documenting the architectural scene in Mexico, esp. the capitol. (Even included are views of the new streetcar system that had been recently installed.) The lithographs were done by L. Garces and executed by the firm of Murguia. Mathes in his book on Mexican lithography, Mexico on Stone, pp. 41-44, calls the set: "The most important album of Mexican views of the century". Reprinted in the 1970's in a deluxe and very limited edition, the original set is extremely scarce on the market -- no complete sets have apparently ever come up at auction; OCLC notes only 6 library holdings, but with no indication of the completeness of the volumes. (Palau 270223/4) Volumes 1 and 2 are bound in red cloth over marbled boards, vol. 3 in red cloth alone. Aside from the defect noted in vol. iii, very good copies.

      - MOVEABLE. SPEAKING PUZZLE BOX. No pub. information, circa 1880. This is a Victorian cube puzzle in the original box - but this puzzle is different. Each of the 6 cubes makes a different sound when a string is pulled. The box is very large, measuring 16 1/2" wide x 11 3/4 " deep and 6 " high - in fine condition with metal clasps. The box is covered with printed chromolithographed paper and the top of the box features a brightly colored rooster and other chickens on the farm. Inside the box are six large cubes - each is 5" on a side. Like other cube puzzles of the era, the child can make 6 different scenes. Unlike any other puzzle, EACH OF THE CUBES MAKES A DIFFERENT SOUND when the string on each of the cubes is pulled (one string is missing) Laid-in are the six original large chromolithogrphed scenes that the child uses as guide to assmble the puzzles (the plate on the cover is the sixth scene). This is a glorious puzzle, extraordinarily rare.
