Never Before Published]. A Biographical Sketch of the Life of William B. Ide: With A Minute and Interesting Account of One of the Largest Emigrating Companies, (3000 Miles Over Land), From the East to the Pacific Coast. And What is Claimed as the Most Authentic and Reliable Account of "The Virtual Conquest of California, in June, 1846, by the Bear Flag Party," as Given by its Leader, The Late Hon. William Brown Ide. [Claremont, New Hampshire]: Published for the Subscribers, [1880]. First edition, and an interesting variant as noted by Streeter 2992 with the original printed wrappers, and ten additional preliminary pages of text. Sixteenmo (6 7/16 x 4 1/4 inches; 164 x 110 mm). [8],[2], [2, half-title: Scraps of California History Never Before Published, verso blank], [1]- 239, [1, "The Inscription"] pp. Inscribed to the New Hampshire Historical society by the nephew of William B. Ide, dated 1904 on the half-title. No other copy of this variant with the wrappers and additional text has sold at auction aside from present copy and the Larson copy of 1995, since 1962. This copy, gifted to the New Hampshire historical society (the state of publication), is bound with the original printed wrappers for "Scraps of California" still intact and bound in along with the text. Additionally it has the preliminary leaves of Ide's follow-up work entitled Who Conquered California? Back cover has at top a caption reading: "More Testimony in Favor of the Efficiency of the ‘Bear Flag Party’ in Bringing about the Conquest of California," followed by reference to and quotations from Tinkham’s History of Stockton, 1880. The preliminary 10 pages in this variant has favorable reviews and a criticism of the Upham Life of Fremont and of T. W. Higginson’s account of the events in California of 1846. All of this is the exact same as the Streeter 2992 copy. It is believed that this variant was was assembled with the various extra parts in addition to the first edition of the text for presentation. Wrappers with some minor discoloration. Some very slight dampstains on bottom edge of first few pages. N.H. Historical Society stamp, blindstamped almost invisibly on first leaf. Overall an about fine copy. "William Ide was the leader of the Bear Flag movement at Sonoma, and has often been referred to as the "President" of California. He was a man of high ideals and integrity. This little book is source material, and the only volume published thus far that deals exclusively with this incident of California history. Ide died in California in 1852. The book was set in type by hand by Simeon Ide, William's brother, when he was 86 years old. The edition was small and copies are now extremely rare. J. G. L. [J. Gregg Layne, historian and editor of the Quarterly of the Historical Society of Southern California.]" (Zamorano Eighty, 45.) This self-published volume was printed on a small press by the 86 year-old Simeon Ide in apparently very limited numbers. Mintz lists that only 80 copies were printed. Graff 2059. Howes I4.         Mexico Pintoresco Artistico y Monumental.

First edition. Mexico City: Imprenta de la Reforma, 1880 / 82/ 83. First edition. Three volumes, large quartos, pp xxxv, 515, 78, and with 67 plates; frontis., vi, 534, 7, and 70 plates; 576 (of 633), with 56 plates (of 68). Total number of plates is 193, all full-page, hors-du-texte. The first two volumes deal with Mexico City and its environs; vol. 3 deals with the rest of the country. The lithograph plates in these volumes are of very high quality, on especially thin paper used to enhance the imprint, showing everything of interest in the city at the time, along with descriptive and historical text by the author. The plates as well as the text are of great value in documenting the architectural scene in Mexico, esp. the capitol. (Even included are views of the new streetcar system that had been recently installed.) The lithographs were done by L. Garces and executed by the firm of Murguia. Mathes in his book on Mexican lithography, Mexico on Stone, pp. 41-44, calls the set: "The most important album of Mexican views of the century". Reprinted in the 1970's in a deluxe and very limited edition, the original set is extremely scarce on the market -- no complete sets have apparently ever come up at auction; OCLC notes only 6 library holdings, but with no indication of the completeness of the volumes. (Palau 270223/4) Volumes 1 and 2 are bound in red cloth over marbled boards, vol. 3 in red cloth alone. Aside from the defect noted in vol. iii, very good copies.

        SPEAKING PUZZLE BOX

      - MOVEABLE. SPEAKING PUZZLE BOX. No pub. information, circa 1880. This is a Victorian cube puzzle in the original box - but this puzzle is different. Each of the 6 cubes makes a different sound when a string is pulled. The box is very large, measuring 16 1/2" wide x 11 3/4 " deep and 6 " high - in fine condition with metal clasps. The box is covered with printed chromolithographed paper and the top of the box features a brightly colored rooster and other chickens on the farm. Inside the box are six large cubes - each is 5" on a side. Like other cube puzzles of the era, the child can make 6 different scenes. Unlike any other puzzle, EACH OF THE CUBES MAKES A DIFFERENT SOUND when the string on each of the cubes is pulled (one string is missing) Laid-in are the six original large chromolithogrphed scenes that the child uses as guide to assmble the puzzles (the plate on the cover is the sixth scene). This is a glorious puzzle, extraordinarily rare.

By the end of 1880, only 49 copies had been sold at one guinea. A near fine, if not the finest surviving copy of one of the great rarities of nineteenth-century literature. Workers in the Dawn, described by Sutherland as having the ?melodramatic excesses of a first novel?, centres on the wretched life of Arthur Golding and his destructive relationship with two women, Helen Norman, a clergyman?s daughter, and Carrie Mitchell, a young prostitute. Arthur takes pity on the ?whoring and brandy-drinking? Carrie and marries her in an attempt to cure her ways. He fails miserably and flees to America seeking a melodramatic end by hurling himself into Niagara Falls screaming ?Helen! Helen!?       Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie,, 1880. Le Ferghanah, Le Kouldja, et la Sibérie Occidentale. Impressions de Voyage d'une Parisienne. Folio. Publisher's de luxe binding, signed Charles Magnier at the tail of the spine, red hard-grained morocco, matching red cloth boards, title gilt to spine with ornate Islamic-style panels, boards similarly elaborately blocked in black and gold, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece and numerous other engraved illustrations, many full-page, 4 full-page maps, one in colour. A little chafed on the cords, and at the head and tail of the spine, corners a little bumped, some foxing as usual, remains very good. First edition. Marie Ujfalvy-Bourdon was the French-born wife of the Hungarian ethnographer and linguist Károly Jeno Ujfalvy, professor of Central Asian Geography and History at the École des langues orientales vivantes in Paris, and in 1876 she accompanied him on his expedition, which was sponsored by the Ministère d'Instruction publique et des beaux arts, through Central Asia, producing on her own behalf this handsome, and well-illustrated popular account. Their route took them through most of the former khanates of Central Asia, just recently absorbed into Russian Turkistan - Tashkent, Samarkand, Ferghana, Kokand, and Kuldja - before visiting Omsk in Siberia and returning to Moscow via the Urals. The superb binding was designed and executed by Charles Magnier who became renowned for his edition bindings at this high point for French book production.

        Nineteenth-Century American Kindergarten Embroidery Album

[United States], 1880. Nineteenth-century American embroidery album, featuring scores of colorful patterns and figures executed on cardstock. In the 1830s, German educator Friedrich Froebel developed his original "system of kindergarten," a revolutionary program for children that emphasized spatial literacy and graphic design. The "Froebel gifts" were a series of twenty interactive toys, including building blocks, origami papers, modeling clay, and embroidered cards like the ones collected in this album. Milton Bradley & Company, which offered the toys for sale in the United States, featured embroidery kits as "the twelfth gift" in their 1873-1874 catalog: "The embroidering is done with needles and colored silks and worsted on paper. . . . the pupils produce, in course of time, the most beautiful representations of natural and artificial objects -- mute, eloquent tokens of an early acquired taste in regard to form and color, and of manual dexterity and skill rarely witnessed in children of such tender age." The format of this unsigned and undated album corresponds directly to surviving nineteenth-century American examples, such as Philadelphia kindergarten teacher Lettie Allen's 1880 embroidery album (Institute for Figuring, Los Angeles). Frobel's emphasis on line, form, and pattern as basic elements of thought anticipated the modernist turn to abstraction: "With their pages of multicolored 'letters' forming words in no known tongue, the books passed down through the families of nineteenth-century kindergarteners are like mysterious Bibles" (Inventing Kindergarten, 76). A near-fine survival. Oblong concertina album, measuring 9.5 x 11.25 inches, 16 panels. Original black textured cloth ruled in blind, titled "Sewing" in gilt to upper board, black ribbon ties. 64 embroidery patterns and figures worked in colored thread on ivory cards, each card measuring 3.75 x 4.5 inches, mounted four cards to a panel. Light shelfwear to album, ribbon ties frayed, crease to edge of panel 15 (not affecting sewing).

A Series of Picturesque Seats of the noblemen and gentlemen of Great Britain and Ireland. With descriptive and historical letterpress.

London: William Mackenzie, [1880] - Quarto, 6 volumes. Publisher's full red morocco, extra gilt on spine and boards, raised bands, marbled endpapers, roll to turn-ins, gilt edges. Some occasional light foxing, an unusually bright set in excellent condition. Coloured woodblock vignette title pages, 240 coloured woodblock plates (heightened with gum arabic) by Alexander Francis Lydon, printed by Benjamin Fawcett. First edition in book form; "the book's publishing history is complicated. It is described as having been issued in parts between 1864 and 1880, but selections from it like The Ancestral Homes of Britain of 1868 also appeared during this period" (Ray). Morris's Seats offers an unparalleled survey of British and Irish country houses in their late Victorian heyday, Lydon's superbly detailed and carefully composed plates - projecting an image of supremely placid and untroubled estates - were printed with considerable subtlety by Benjamin Fawcett, "the leading provincial colour printer of the age" (ibid).

In Zululand with the British Throughout the War of 1879.

London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1880 - Octavo. Original diagonal-ribbed green cloth, title gilt to spine, decorative friezes in gilt to head and foot, extending over boards in blind, gilt block of three assegais to front, brown coated endpapers. Extremities very lightly bumped, a few short nicks to spine-ends, inner hinges very slightly tender, foxing to frontispiece, title page, the mount of the Frere portrait and facing leaf, and the folding map, short closed tear to map stub and one fold partially split. A very good copy. Tinted photogravure portrait frontispiece of Chelmsford, one similar plate, mounted photograph of Sir Bartle Frere, wood-engraved portrait of Cetywayo (Mendelssohn: "very dissimilar to the majority of other delineations of the Zulu king"), 8 folding plans, large folding military map to rear. First edition of this "especially vivid and insightful" eyewitness account (Raugh). The author was "well acquainted with the country and had a good knowledge of the natives and their language and customs" (Mendelssohn). He was the only correspondent in the country at the outbreak of hostilities and immediately immersed himself in the action: "With the Central Column rode Charles L. Norris-Newman, a retired Army Captain, known to his close friends as 'Noggs'. In the tradition of keen special correspondents, Norris-Newman was the first white man to splash across the river and set foot in Zululand. He represented the Natal Times and the London Standard and had attached himself to the staff of Commandant Lonsdale of the Natal Native Contingent and sported their badge, a twisted piece of red cloth tucked in the loose muslin band that encircled his sun helmet" (Wilkinson-Latham, cited after Roth and Olson, Historical Dictionary of War Journalism, pp. 220-1). The appendices include the list of officers and men killed at Isandhlwana, the official report of the defence of Rorke's Drift, and the proceedings of the court martial on Lieutenant Cary in connection with the death of the Prince Imperial.
