An important autograph working draft of an unpublished letter to the publisher, Giulio Ricordi, discussing the staging of four of Verdi's best- known operas and two of his vocal pieces

. 4 pp. Octavo. Dated Genoa, January 9, 1880. Written in dark brown ink. Unsigned. Heavily worked, with extensive deletions and revisions. An urgent and impassioned draft in which Verdi writes about six of his own works: his operas Aida, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La forza del destino and his vocal pieces Pater Noster and Ave Maria. In something of a frenzy, the composer calls the recent performance of Rigoletti at La Scala "un fiasco" and that of Aida "un semifiasco." Verdi goes on to discuss Ricordi's publication of two of his recently-composed vocal works, the Pater Noster and the Ave Maria. He insists that Ricordi publish the Pater Noster as in the original and tells Ricordi that he will send him a copy of the Ave Maria to be issued as a piano reduction. "It's not a matter of punishing anybody.. but I just wanted to avoid a bother with a new public flop. Nothing else... The conductor who was directing the choir must be able to read a short score, right?... Reduce the individual pieces in whatever hell of a key you want. I will send you the Ave Maria tomorrow or the day after, whose simple instrumental part you'll be able to reduce for the piano. So, at La Scala... a semi-fiasco with Aida, a fiasco with Rigoletto and I foresee one for Trovatore... how could it be otherwise? ... Without a single decent singer... In Rigoletto if the tenor is the best one, eternal God! imagine the rest of them! And in Trovatore! ... an ugly screeching..." In a postscript to the document, Verdi discusses the possible staging of both La forza del destino and Aida in Naples, and suggests that Ricordi negotiate with Lampugnani in this regard: "Interested in praying you to stage Forza del destino in Naples... That theatre is better than many others. After that Aida and Rigoletto at La Scala we may very well do Aida in Naples... Make an agreement with Lampugnani. I'd be grateful for it." Very slightly worn; creased at folds and at one corner.. The majority of the text of this document is unpublished (not included in the Carteggio Verdi-Ricordi). Only the text of the postscript is known, which Verdi sent to Ricordi as a telegram on January 11, 1880, two days after writing the present, somewhat heated, draft. Verdi was characteristically quite involved in the business aspects of his art. The present document, relative to some of the most important works in the composer's oeuvre, lends important insight into his detailed and often somewhat heated dealings with his publisher Ricordi.

Experiences of a Colonist Forty Years Ago ; A Journey from Port Phillip to South Australia in 1839

Adelaide: J. Williams, 1880. Octavo, photographic frontispiece and two other sheets (five illustrations in total); very good indeed in the original red cloth, decorated in blind and gilt, a few bumps, flecked noticeably to spine. The corrected second edition with photographic plates. Rare. The second edition of Hamilton's account of two overland journeys from Port Phillip to Adelaide in 1839 and 1846 is known for the inclusion of photographic plates, reproducing drawings done by Hamilton himself. The first edition, rather differently arranged, was published in 1879. Holden notes: 'the first edition of this work was published in 1879 and was illustrated with six wood-engravings… Five of the six original wash drawings from which these wood-engravings were done were then photographed for the second edition. The same List of Illustrations, however, was bound into the second edition and hence confuses the collation.' Holden includes an excellent biographical note on the interesting Hamilton, artist, horse-fancier, and early South Australian settler. The title-page has the early manuscript name of "J. Hindmarsh", presumably John Hindmarsh Jun., the son of the first Governor and a prominent lawyer in later Victorian Adelaide.

Die Steigungsverhältnisse der Strassen. Separat-Abdruck aus der Zeitschrift des Architekten- und Ingenieur-Vereins zu Hannover, Band XXVI. Heft 3

Hannover: Schmorl & von Seefeld,, 1880-1887. [Bound together with:] LAUNDHARDT, Wilhelm. Theorie des Trassirens. Heft I. Die kommerzielle Trassirung. Zweite Auflage. Mit 19 Holzschnitten. Two works bound in one octavo volume (219 × 140 mm), pp. 49 & iv, 112. Contemporary roan-backed marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt. With many figures, tables and charts in the text. Very good copies in a fine contemporary binding. Presentation copies, inscribed to Professor Fischer by the author, the first work additionally with the ownership of Erich Schneider to the title. Like Dupuit, Launhardt began his professional life as a civil engineer, working for the public road administration. A professor of roads, railways and bridges at the Technische Hochschule (now the University) in Hanover, of which he later became director, Wilhelm Launhardt (1832–1918) was "a pioneer of mathematical economics, an important early contributor to the pure theory of welfare economics, a major figure in the history of location theory, and one of the few German engineer-economists of his day to carry on the tradition [of] German Classical Economics" (Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, p. 122). In Die Steigungsverhältnisse, here offprinted from the Architects and Engineers Association's Journal, Launhardt investigates the influence upon operating costs of gradients. Theorie des Trassirens is a re-working of Launhardt's earlier "Kommercielle Tracirung der Verkehrswege" of 1872: "Practical problems of highway planning led Launhardt to the gradually more general analysis of efficient transportation networks. This work was later systematized in Theorie des Trassirens (Theory of Network Planning). Part I, entitled 'Commercial Network Planning', contains the derivation of efficiency criteria without regard to topography. This part is the second edition, much revised and enlarged, of the 1872 publication, and also incorporates sections from the 1885 book [Mathematische Begründung der Volkswirtschaftslehre]... The contributions to economics are found in part I. This begins with a discussion of investment criteria. From a social point of view, networks should be planned in such a way that the sum of operating and capital costs is a minimum. Private capitalists, however, try to maximize the internal rate of return on their capital. Under perfect competition the two criteria would coincide, since the internal rate of return, if duly maximized would equal the market rate of interest. In reality, however, since the railroad industry is inherently non-competitive, rates of return can be pushed above market rates of interest by keeping railroad investment below the social optimum. This was one of Launhardt's basic arguments for government ownership of railroads. For his own analysis he uses, of course, the social criterion." (Jürg Niehans in The New Palgrave).

[vi] 253, ix, [227, [iv] pp.; 118 [55, 63] large engraved text figures and unnumbered plates, over 300 other text engravings, one large, folded full colour map of India in 1881. Original uniform rich decorated gilt and black ornamented red cloth. Gilt and black patterned endpapers. All edges gilt.* Rare dedication copy of a beautifully produced work on India, its people, history, architecture, religions, customs, and much more. Inscribed on the first blank of both volumes: "Seiner koeniglichen Hoheit Herzog Carl Theodor in Bayern. In tiefster Ehrfurcht überreicht von Emil Schlagintweit. Zweibrücken, den 16 Januar/18 November 1881". Emil [Von] Schlagintweit (1835-1904) was a German scholar who in this work collected the travel notes of his brothers, the explorers Hermann (1826-1882), Adolf (1829-1857), Eduard (1831-1866), and Robert (1833-1885), who travelled throughout India and adjacent countries, in particular Nepal and Tibet. Emil remained in Germany, but it is thanks to him that the observations made by his brothers were compiled and published. The work is richly illustrated with scenes of daily life, and views of cities and old or important buildings. Some light spotting, mainly in the margins of volume 1, otherwise a fine set..

        A PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM

[Berlin and New York: Maether & Co.], 1880. n. Hardcover. 305 x 229 mm (12 x 9"). Contemporary burgundy pebble-grain morocco, lower board framed by gilt and black rules, UPPER BOARD MADE OF BEVELLED POLISHED ALABASTER WITH ONLAID WREATH OF COLORED GLASS DAISIES and leaves accented with tiny blue forget-me-nots, (barely visible) initials "J R" etched at the center of the oval formed by the flowers, brass cornerpieces and catch, large decorative brass clasp with key, raised bands flanked by multiple gilt rules, lower board with gilt turn-ins, pale blue watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. In the original (somewhat soiled and worn) gray pebbled cloth box with hook and eye closures. With 25 double-sided heavy card leaves, many with chromolithographed decoration, each with gilt-bordered frames for inserting photographs, the majority containing family photo portraits in sepia tint, a few of the photographs gently hand-colored. A couple of daisies missing their yellow centers, small dampstain inside the front cover, occasional minor spotting to chromolithograph frames or photographs, otherwise an excellent specimen of a volume that, as a heavy object inviting avid use, would normally be found today as wreckage. This is a charming and substantial relic of Victoriana with fine alabaster, glass, and brass work that remains, 150 years later, as gay and inviting on the outside as it is sober and dignified on the inside. The women in the photographs are usually gripped in high-buttoned black taffeta, and the bushy-whiskered men mostly look like Henrik Ibsen, so one could be inclined to surmise that the owners who used this album were continental, perhaps even Scandinavian; furthermore, the style of the lower board is Germanic, as is the glass and brass work. And yet the portraits were taken by photographers located in London, Hastings, and Brighton, as identified on the rear of the images. It is possible that Maether & Co., the Berlin (and New York) printer and publisher made the album, but then exported it (or sold it to a buyer who moved) to London. In any case, the photographs provide a period glimpse of upper-class life--for this was a very costly album to manufacture--with details of men's, women's, and children's fashions, as well as some home furnishings and occasionally an expensive objet d'art that rated a devoted photographic record. That the album has survived in such excellent condition is a reflection of how important it was to its owners and how smart they were to retain its original container.

Deutsche Volkstrachten: Original Zeichnunben Mit Erklarendem Text

Circa 1880s, second, enlarged edition, 166 pp., with 90 chromolithographs, each measuring 12.5 by 10 inches. Costumes, with genre settings from German, Austrian, Tyrolean provinces (this includes area now part of Italy, in the Dolomites or Alto Adige). Chromos are especially brilliant, and they are very clean and crisp in this copy. Contemporary blue boards have some soilage. Otherwise binding in great shape. Because of condition of plates, the main event, and the text, I consider this near fine. The same plates, when disbound and unframed, sell for about $100 each.

Small tears at the extremities, some smudges, a few pencil corrections, mostly editorial in nature, near fine, housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. Dated in pencil 14 March 1880. Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed from the author's great nephew, A.N.L. Munby, the compiler of the monumental catalog of the fantastic Sir Thomas Phillipps collection of manuscripts, dated in 1956 to an American bookseller, thanking the bookseller for informing him that he has three of Phillipps's manuscripts, which he will add to his lists, expressing interest that the dealer has his great-uncle's manuscript, and mentioning that the rest of A.J. Munby's manuscripts are at Trinity College in Cambridge. The author's finished and final draft of this epic poem about a working woman, a subject he apparently found fascinating, as he clandestinely married a maidservant while he continually interviewed working women. His diaries of these interviews are generally considered of equal or even more lasting value than his poetry. .

THE BOKE NAMED THE GOUERNOUR DEUISED BY SIR THOMAS ELYOT, KNIGHT

      C. Kegan Paul, London 1880 - Edited from the First Edition of 1531 by Henry Herbert Stephen Croft. Two volumes. cxcviii, 352p; x, 660p. Illustrated with frontispieces of Sir Thomas and Lady Elyot. Bound by Frost in half brown crushed morocco with cloth sides and marbled endpapers, t.e.g., the spines with gilt titles and panel ornaments. This wotk is known chiefly as the first work on education in English. While it aimed at the education of princes, it was used by the upper classes as a model."The twofold object of this work was 'to instruct men in such virtues as shall be expedient for them, which shall have authority in a weal public, and to educate those youths that hereafter may be deemed worthy to be governors." (DNB Vol. IV, p. 765).'"Elyot received little reward for his services to the state, but his scholarship and his books were held in high esteem by his contemporaries. The Boke named the Governour was printed by Thomas Berthelet (1531, 1534, 1536, 1544, etc.). It is a treatise on moral philosophy, intended to direct the education of those destined to fill high positions, and to inculcate those moral principles which alone could fit them for the performance of their duties. The subject was a favourite one in the 16th century, and the book, which contained many citations from classical authors, was very popular. Elyot expressly acknowledges his obligations to Erasmus's Institutio Principis Christiani but he makes no reference to the De regno et regis institutione of Francesco Patrizzi (d. 1494), bishop of Gaeta, on which his work was undoubtedly modelled [sic]."       .

Major General Charles George Gordon. C.B. R.E. Hero of Khartoum.

Marlborough, Gould and Co. Publishers, London 1880 - London: Marlborough, Gould and Co. Publishers, ca. 1880. Lithograph, printed image ca. 49x32,5 cm (17x13 inches). Proof copies 5 s. each. Tears and minor losses on extremities, otherwise a very good wide margined lithograph. Large well executed lithograph portrait of Major-General Charles George Gordon, CB (1833-1885), known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum. "It may not be out of place to mention that by far the best portrait of General Gordon , to our mind, is a large lithograph published by Marlborough and Co., 52, old Bailey, London, and within reach of all purses" (General Gordon's life and letters // Littell's The Living Age. Fifth Series, Vol. 1. Boston, 1885. P. 465). "Major-General Charles George Gordon, was a British army officer and administrator. He made his military reputation in China, where he was placed in command of the "Ever Victorious Army", a force of Chinese soldiers led by European officers. In the early 1860s, Gordon and his men were instrumental in putting down the Taiping Rebellion, regularly defeating much larger forces. For these accomplishments, he was given the nickname "Chinese" Gordon and honours from both the Emperor of China and the British. He entered the service of the Khedive in 1873 (with British government approval) and later became the Governor-General of the Sudan, where he did much to suppress revolts and the slave trade. When a serious revolt broke out in the Sudan, led by a Muslim reformer and self-proclaimed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad, Gordon was sent to Khartoum with instructions to secure the evacuation of loyal soldiers and civilians, and depart with them. After evacuating about 2,500 British civilians he retained a smaller group of soldiers and non-military men. As an ardent Christian evangelist he was determined to stand up to the Mahdi, his Muslim nemesis. In the build up to battle the two leaders corresponded attempting to convert the other to their respective faiths, but neither would comply. Besieged by the Mahdi's forces, Gordon organized a city-wide defence lasting almost a year that gained him the admiration of the British public, though not the government, which had not wished to become involved (as Gordon had known before setting out). Only when public pressure to act had become too great was a relief force reluctantly sent. It arrived two days after the city had fallen and Gordon had been beheaded" (Wikipedia).
