WIth one-page Turkish authorization at end. [875] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The present example of the printed Qur'an compares closely to a copy held at McMaster University (Toronto), identified as a German facsimile of a manuscript Qur'an from 1683 C.E. (reproduced in digital facsimile), save at the very end of the text. This copy has a small note identifying the gilt calligrapher as the faqir Hassan, two pages of text concerning mosques in Basra and Kufa, and the additional page in Turkish transcribing an authorization and attestation dated 1094 A.H. (1675 C.E.) and ten seals and signatures. The endsheets have manuscript notes in Persian circa 1308 A.H. (1889 C.E.). An usual and well travelled example of a printed Qur'an using color printing to resemble the traditional Islamic manuscript format.

London: Reeves and Turner, 1880. First Thus. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. First thus. Binder's copies. PLEASE NOTE: Price includes $350 restoration credit with Plough & Shear Bindery. Significant loss of spine cloth from two volumes, several bindings need repair, boards of several volumes are soiled and a bit warped, front & end matter foxed. This would be an ideal set for rebinding purposes; it could also be sympathetically restored. 1880 Hard Cover. Complete in eight hardcover volumes. 8vo. Original blue cloth, gold bird & butterfly on front covers, gilt titles, top edge gilt. Each volume includes frontispiece, one of which is an etching from a painting by William Bell Scott, a noted Scottish painter. Also included are a number of etchings, among which are facsimiles of Shelley's handwritten manuscripts. Volume V includes a fold-out Pedigree of Percy Shelley which traces his family tree back 200 years. Percy Shelley was among the most important English Romantic poets, a good friend of Lord Byron, and the husband of Frankenstein author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Forman's collection of his works is still considered the most authoritative and well-researched collection available, and was the first to include Shelley's 'The Daemon of the World'. The poetical works first appeared in four volumes in 1876, and the prose works were released separately in 1880. At this time, Reeves and Turner also offered a complete uniform set of all eight volumes, which is the set for sale here.

He was called to attend Crown Prince Frederick afterwards Emperor Frederick III of Germany, who suffered from, succumbed to, a cancer of the larynx.         Baudelaire Photograph

1880. BAUDELAIRE, Charles. Portrait for La Galerie Contemporaine by Etienne Carjat. Woodburytype print with artist's information printed on mount, 225 x 185 mm, matted and framed in polished dark wood. [Paris: Carjat, ca. 1862; published in La Galerie Contemporaine in 1878]. |~||~||~||~| |~||~||~||~||~| A literary photographic masterpiece. "Among the many nineteenth-century portraits, Carjat's Baudelaire has become an outstanding icon" (Icons of Photography). This carbon print was published posthumously in the popular anthology La Galerie Contemporaine; it is widely recognized as a literary photographic masterpiece, and has been continually reproduced down to the present day. "While portraits by Nadar strongly emphasize the poet's vain, foppish side, Carjat depicts the forty-one-year-old in the pose of a lonely intellectual who, bothered by all this picture-taking business, looks into the camera with an impatient and distrustful expression. Yet this very picture was to become the most renowned of all Baudelaire photographs" (Icons of Photography). Etienne Carjat (1828-1906), photographer of Daumier, Verlaine, and Rimbaud among other luminaries, created this brilliantly cast portrait of Baudelaire, perhaps the single most famous photograph of La Galerie Contemporaine and one of the finest literary photographic portraits of the nineteenth century. In fine condition. Victoria & Albert Museum, Guide to Early Photographic Processes, p. 91 and plate 30. Newhall, The History of Photography, p. 70. International Center of Photography, Encyclopedia of Photography, p. 99. On the Art of Fixing a Shadow, p. 101, plate 76. Langer, Icons of Photography, p. 55.

        Lilium tigrinum

London 1880 - Henry John Elwes (1846-1922) was a British botanist, naturalist and author, celebrated for his travels throughout Asia, including the Himalayan Mountains, with the Geographical Section of the British Association and noted for his collection of lily specimens. In 1880 Elwes published a spectacular collection of prints depicting various species of one of the world's favorite flowers, the lily. The “Monograph of the Genus Lilium” is the result of a collaborative effort, the organization and text by Elwes and the images by renowned botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch. Although Fitch's drawings for Elwes' “Genus Lilium” were the last great works of his career, in his lifetime, Fitch produced nearly 10,000 illustrations. This hand-colored folio size lithograph, Lilium tigrinum, measures 21.75” x 15” and is in mint condition. This lily, commonly known as the Tiger Lily, is richly colored with a pale stem but vibrant green leaves and decorative red-orange flowers and stamen. The flowers are illustrated in many states of bloom. In addition to the flower, sections of the bulb and root and a sketch-like drawing of the plant in its entirety add a scientific aspect to this magnificent lithograph.

"Illustrated with One Hundred Grand Compositions by Gustave Dore". The French historian Michaud completed his massive history half a century before this production; the Barrie Publishers chose Dore as illustrator as his style was so well suited to realizing both the savagery and at times the nobility of the centuries long Crusades. Full brown morocco bindings, stamped in blind and in gilt, with dentelle turn-ins, and white moire endpapers. There has been discreet repair to the spines, and the endpapers have some minor chipping. Scattered foxing, mostly affecting the borders and versos of the "Grand Compositions".
