It's rather unusual to find periodicals focused on the theatre and performance as it did not become a respected profession until the twentieth century. As a monthly review The Theatre provides an exceptional amount of information that other sources, like the formal Lord Chamberlain's paper, cannot provide. Including reviews of plays, extracts from productions, poems, and images of characters, as well as character studies and correspondence. Edited by Clement Scott, a theatre critic known for his reviews in the Daily Telegraph. He set the standard for reviewers as he always reviewed a production on the first night, as well as having a readable writing style. From the personal library of Harry N Greatorex, an author from the Derbyshire area who wrote about local theatres. In 10 volumes, with 20 parts, missing 1885. PartsI and II from 1880 have been bound with the spine title of 1882, andparts V and VI from 1882 have been bound with the spine title of 1880. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, smart with light handling marks. Bumping to spine and extremities. Light fading to spines vols VI-X. Light foxing to pastedowns and free-endpapers.         The Photophone

      Montreal: Dawson Brothers, 1880. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. First Edition. [385]-448 pages. 8vo. Original light orange printed wrappers. The copy of "A. H. Foord", with his name and street address in pencil at top of front wrapper. Minor soiling and edge chipping to the wrappers. In the Canadian Naturalist, Vol IX, No 7, New Series, Dec. 29th, 1880. The paper is found on pages 397-407, and is the address before the American Association at Boston in August of 1880. Wraps. Here, Alexander Graham Bell explains the genesis of his idea, followed by an extensive history of selenium and the part it played in the the photophone. The photophone used light pulses, and selenium's photoconductivity to convert sound into light pulses, and back again to sound at the other end. Bell credits Taintor with the implementation of the apparatus, which was sent to the Smithsonian in a sealed box. In hindsight, Bell may have anticipated the entire field of fiber optic transmission: "It was evidently necessary, in order to reduce the idea to practice, to devise an apparatus to be operated by the voice of the speaker, by which variations could be produced in a parallel beam of light, corresponding to the variations in the air produced by the voice." (p. 401) In concept, this is exactly what fiber optic transmission equipment does - encoding information on one end, transmitting it, and decoding it at the other. "Even before the work of Hertz, Bell had transmitted speech over a beam of light and was granted a patent in 1880 (US 235496 A ) for a device which he called the 'photophone'. An improvement was worked out in the Boston laboratory of the American Bell Telephone Company in 1897 on which a fundamental patent was issued [which according to Lloyd Espenschied covers for the first time the modulation of radiant energy by a voice current and, in a sense, is the basis for all amplitude modulated radio and carrier telephone systems.] (History Bell System, Engineering, Vol 1, p362) Unfortunately the new device's transmission distance was only tested to 213 meters, and it had the same issues as any line-of-sight signaling technique. In "The City of Light : The Story of Fiber Optics" author Hecht points out that although the discovery was exciting to Bell, the practicalities (weather and radio) doomed it. The concept still spread like wildfire. We offer what is most likely the first Canadian edition, dated December 29, 1880. The first American printing is American Journal of Science", Third series, Vol. XX, No. 118, October 1880, followed closely by an article in the Scientific American, Supplement 246, September 18, 1880. pp. 3921-3923. There is also a French edition (Paris: 1880), and a Leipzig edition in the same year. Foord is most probably "the English palaeontologist and scientific illustrator Arthur Humphreys Foord (1844-1933)" (Geological Society of America). See Hecht, City of Light: The Story of Fiber Optics, pp. 80-82 for a nice discussion of the evolution of fiber optics.

Condition: Fine, with minor aged paper remains to verso corners from previous mount watermarked 1902. Pathos notwithstanding and made all the more alluring by want of attribution, this vivid watercolor scene ( Flock of Gulls on Atlantic Coast) was envisioned and thus executed not by a professional artist, field naturalist or explorer but by an amateur, or armchair, traveler/naturalist /painter. The drama evident yet depiction gentle, this watercolor quite plausibly was painted by a young Victorian gentlewoman who would have learned the art of nature painting, as was the custom, and who would have sought inspiration from the grand natural history color plate volumes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This bold and vivid naturalists' display of a tapestry of dappled foliage or the crystalline translucence of disturbed water or the splendid reticulated plumage is clearly stylized by a primitive eye, yet executed with an accomplished and refined hand; the technique is learned. The resulting composition is one of dramatic charm.

A wonderful sea chart of the Mississippi Delta produced by the Spanish Admiralty at the close of the nineteenth century. This is an impressive sea chart of the Mississippi Delta produced by the Spanish Admiralty in 1880. The coast line is clearly mapped out with little detailing except for the soundings around the Delta. There are two compasses and a number of lighthouses identified along the shoreline. The chart uses the surveys conducted by the U. S. Coast Survey, which were carried out between 1853 and 1877. It is a wonderful chart of this important area and superb collector's piece for anyone interested in early maps of the Americas.

      1880 - GOULD, John. Monograph of the Pittidae. London: by the Author, 1880. Two parts in one, Part I with plates and text, Part II text only, all published. Large folio (15-1/2 by 22-1/2 inches), original half green cloth, original green printed boards. $22,000.First edition of this lovely Gould monograph, with ten beautiful hand-colored plates, in original printed boards as issued.The Pittidae is a family of brilliantly colored and thrush-like insectivorous birds, mostly limited to the subtropical and tropical forests of Asia, Indonesia and Australia. "In the field of natural history the accomplishments of this man [John Gould] are truly monumental. No other ornithologist has ever exceeded (or will ever exceed) the number of Gould's bird discoveries and the magnitude and splendor of his folio publications" (Sauer, John Gould, the Bird Man, xv). "Lithography which introduced a greater freedom of line and softer tones than had hitherto been known was ideally suited as a medium for bird pictures, the finished prints resembling watercolors with the birds set in their natural habitats often amongst plants and flowers. Gould was meticulous about accuracy both in design and coloring" (Nissen, IVB 381). "The 10 hand-colored lithographs are mostly taken from the Birds of Asia, Birds of Australia, and Birds of New Guinea" (Sitwell, 102). Originally projected for completion in four parts, the Pittidae was abandoned after Gould's death. No title page or preliminary letterpress was issued; the title is taken from the front cover. The author describes Joseph Mallard William Turner's education thus, "He learnt reading from his father, writing and probably little else from at his schools at Brentford and Margate, perspective (imperfectly) from T. Malton, architecture (imperfectly and classical only) from Mr. Hardwick, water-colour drawing from Dr. Monro, and perhaps some hints as to painting in oils from Sir Joshua Reynolds, in whose house he studied for awhile. Like other men of those pre-photographic days, he spent much of his time in making topographical drawings."[see: BRYAN'S DICTIONARY, Vol.V, p.214]. Plates and text very clean, pictorial covers with elaborate gilt and blind stamping, marbled endpapers, modest scuffing and rubbing to cover surfaces, firm and tight set.

      London James Hogg 1880. 8vo. 63pp. Publisher's polychrome binding in varying shades of blue, green and red.Minor edgewear, scuffed and a trifle discoloured here and there, cloth darkened to rear panel. Internally clean, pencil gift inscription to front pastedown. A trifle thumbmarked here and there one gathering stands slightly proud. Nevertheless a very good copy. The author's first book (although attribution is disputed...well it's disputed in the fact that one eminent gentleman says it's Phillpots, a number of others say it isn't; nobody has another viable option, and seeing as no-one has really seen a copy of it floating around for a while it's likely to remain somewhat mysterious. A fair amount of the Phillpotts attribution seems to be based on the fact that he wrote something else for London Society. The jury is still out, having a really long lunch), a slightly different version appeared in "London Society" Magazine in the 1880's, this is the first edition in book form. Stupidly rare. Six copies found on worldcat, only two in the UK (absent from the BL catalogue), no auction records for the last 50 years or so, one of those strange books that appears in Hubin, and on the occasional list of highly thought of oddities and never sees the light of day. A thoroughly presentable copy. Crazy job this bookselling lark.

LOVELY GROUP OF 1880'S COLOR LITHOS OF JAPAN This suite contains the following color print images of Japan, with titles: Odah; From our Inn at Omura; Wayside Inn Near Nagasaki; Sulphur baths Uritzino; Halt by the Wayside near Palhiwa; Scene in a Silk Shop; Village Life in Japan; Japanese Physician; and Shaving the ladies. These last two are in duo-tone not color. * Charles Wirgman was a correspondent for the London Times, in in 1856, from there, he went to Japan as a correspondent for Illustrated London News, arriving there in 1861. He contributed many illustrated articles for that newspaper. In 1862 as a foreign resident of Yokhoama, he began a new publication the "Japan Punch." * JAPAN PUNCH: was published by Wirgman for 25 years, at first irregularly, then monthly from 1874. The newspaper remains a valuable source of information on the Yokohama foreign settlement and politics and social issues of the day. In Yokohama, where Wirgman was something of a native son. The journal eventually quit operation around 1887. "Japan Punch" was loaded with anecdotes and comic charicatures of local foreign residents, articles on Japan and the Japanese, historic events. * JAPAN PUNCH provided a vital eye-witness account of the heady days in Yokohama as Japan encountered the Western world and their culture. The articles will make you laugh, blush and ponder as the characters come alive. Wirgman was one of those engaging, eccentric, polyglot types who adventured around the Far East and had the knack to make great cartoons as well as caustic essays. The Japan Punch was a satire cartoon magazine. * THE BIRTH OF HAND-COLORED PHOTOGRAPHS IN YOKOHAMA: Being an illustrator and painter, Wirgman got a brilliant idea: to hand color photographs of Japan that were popular with foreign visitors in Yokohama. The tape holds the book together well and so is tightly bound but soe weakness at page 96, the tape covers quite a lot of the rear cover. The covers are very dark and grubby and some loss to the rear corner. Inside it is nice. A couple of small nicks and dots but nothing off putting. No restoration other than the tape applied to the spine 17th Edition.

Small octavo, original gilt-stamped green cloth, uncut. $4800.First edition set of Richard Burton’s translations of Camoens, with commentary volumes, inscribed by Burton in Volume I of the Lusiads, “With the Author’s very best wishes, [in Arabic] Peace, Abdullah.” Sets containing all six volumes are very scarce, and presentation inscriptions by Burton are extraordinarily scarce.First published in 1572, The Lusiads describes Vasco da Gama’s 1498 discovery of the sea route around Africa to India, the very same route Camoens would take in 1553, when he was sent to India as a soldier. “Burton was attracted to Camoens as the mouthpiece of the romantic period of discovery in the Indian Ocean. The voyages, the misfortunes, the chivalry, the patriotism of the poet were to him those of a brother adventurer. In his spirited sketch of the life and character of Camoens it is not presumptuous to read between the lines allusions to his own career… Burton’s aim was to present to modern English readers as much as might be of the influence that Camoens has exercised for three centuries upon the Portuguese… What to the unimaginative may seem nothing but a tour de force is in truth the highest manifestation of the translator’s art” (DNB). Burton’s translation “is absolutely wonderful… the Portuguese nation owes Burton a very considerable debt for making known to the English the works of their greatest poet. Burton put his soul into ‘Camoens’ chiefly because he so thoroughly sympathized with his hero. There was much in common between the two, both were great patriots who had been neglected by their country, both endured the bitterest disappointments without a murmur, both had suffered much in foreign lands. When a man knows a language thoroughly as Burton did Portuguese, and can add to it a sympathy with his hero, such as in this case, the qualifications for a perfect translator are practically complete” (Penzer, 15). Biographer Edward Rice notes that Burton’s “later handwriting changed into near illegibility,” a statement certainly true of the cramped hand of the inscription in Volume I of the present copy (Rice, 117).       Um 1880-85. - Je 18 x 22 cm. Albuminabzüge. Auf Kartons montiert. Jeweils verso von alter Hand bezeichnet. Sehr gute, frische Abzüge. Beide Aufnahmen müssen von nahezu genau demselben Standort aus aufgenommen worden sein, jedoch zu verschiedenen Zeiten, da ein bei einer Aufnahme noch im Bau befindliches großes Gebäude auf dem zweiten Photo vollendet ist. (ältere Aufnahmen aus der Zeit zwischen 1865-75 zeigen hier noch zum Teil freie Flächen). William Notman begann als Daguerreotypist in seiner ursprünglichen Heimat Glasgow. 1856 wanderte er nach Canada aus und gründete ein Studio in Montreal, wo er kurz darauf zum offiziellen Photographen von Queen Victoria in Canada ernannt wurde. Er gehörte bald zu den führenden Photographen Canadas und insbesondere Quebecs. Seine drei Söhne William McFarlane jr., Charles und George wurden ebenfalls Photographen und arbeiteten ab 1870 im väterlichen Studio (bis Charles den Betrieb 1934 verkaufte). Notman und seine Söhne hinterließen ein immenses Werk mit Stadtansichten von Montreal u.a. kanadischer Städte, Landschaftsaufnahmen, Portraits berühmter Persönlichkeiten wie z.B. Buffalo Bill, Bildnisse von Trappern, Aufnahmen von Football-Matches, Schiffen und Eisenbahnen, der Caribou-Jagd, Vögeln etc. etc. Das Mc.Cord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal beherbergt das "Notman Photographical Archive" mit einem Bestand von über 450.000 Photographien und Glasnegativen aus dem 78jährigen Bestehens des Studios und seiner Dependancen.

Richardson for his congratulations upon the occasion of Garfield's nomination as the Republican Party candidate for the presidency. The 1880 Republican National Convention took place between June 2 and June 8, 1880 and resulted in Garfield's nomination for the presidency and Chester A. Arthur's nomination for vice president. Here, Garfield writes: "My dear judge, Yours of the 10th inst. was found awaiting me at Washington but I have not been able to acknowledge it until now. Accept my thanks for your congratulations and suggestions. As I am gratified by the former I shall hope to profit by the latter." Garfield won the 1880 election in November, marking the sixth consecutive victory for the Republican Party. Unfortunately, Garfield's term was short-lived, as he was shot less than four months into his term on, July 2, 1881. He died two and a half months later.

        San Francisco 1849

      [No place, 1880. Tintstone lithograph with additional hand-colouring, sheet size: 18 1/8 x 33 3/4 inches. Framed in gold leaf frame with painted black panel. Firk's rare view of the city of San Francisco in 1849: "one of the best-known early San Francisco views" (Peters). Henry Firks was a painter and lithographer known primarily for his images of California during the mid-nineteenth century. His works are held by the Bancroft Library, California Society of Pioneers, and the University of California. This fine and rare lithograph depicts the city only months before the great increase in population brought about by the Gold Rush. Baird and Evans record eight issues of this image: this is the seventh with no imprint and fifty-two numbers and fifty-two items of reference listed beneath the image. "A wide-ranging portrait of San Francisco, crisply rendered by the artist Henry Firks, is provided in this important view of the city...the view delineates the main features of the newly laid-out town: its favorable location on a wide bay; the hilly terrain affording lookout points; the low commercial structures lining the shore; the residential buildings of various make, some substantial, most not; and the large amount of shipping accommodated by the harbor. At the right is the Pacific Ocean entrance to the harbor, already known as the Golden Gate. Flush with the right-hand margin of the arched view is Yerba Buena Island, preserving San Francisco's original name. Firks' rendering is the source of numerous other views of San Francisco looking north on Montgomery Street to Telegraph Hill" (Deák).         VISTAS DE MONTEVIDEO.

      NP (Montevideo, Uruguay?): Estudio Fotografico de Chute & Brooks, nd (ca.1880's). Oblong photo album, 4 1/2 x 7 1/4 in., bound in burgundy pebbled cloth (spine slightly faded), gilt title on front cover. Twelve original photos, mounted on stubs, each with a white lettered caption along the lower margin of the photo. All are clear and in very good condition. Verso of each bears the stamp of the Chute & Brooks studio, either in Montevideo, or with both the Montevideo and Buenos Aires addresses, plus a note of their silver medal award for photography at the Paris International Exhibition, 1878. Each photograph measures 4 x 6 1/4 in. The images include: Mercado Nuevo, La Fuente, Calle Zabala, Mercado del Puerto, Quinta de D. Pancho Gomez, Calle Sarandi, Calle de 25 de Mayo (a sign partially visible on one of buildings shows "Estudi-- Chute y--"), Vista General, Teatro Solis, Casa de Gobierno, Calle 18 de Julio, and La Matriz. Charles Wallace Chute (1846-1923) and Thomas Brooks were American photographers who began their photography business in Montevideo in 1868. They operated studios both in Uruguay and in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and according to John Hannavy's "Encyclopedia of 19th Century Photography," [Routledge: 2013] were famous for the quality of their portraits. They also published views of various cities in Latin America, and branched out to establish studios in Rio de Janeiro, Havana and New York by the turn of the century. No listings found on OCLC.

        THE HUMMING BIRD

      Watercolour on paper, 13.3cm circular, signed in ink lower centre: "DGR" (monogram), ca. January 1880.  In February 1880 Jane Morris wrote to Rossetti enquiring about a sketch of a humming bird which he had sent to her, & his reply explains the source for the work's subject.  Double-matted w/acid-free board within a modern gilt metal frame.  Provenance: Gifted by the artist to Jane Morris(?); with Thos. Agnew & Sons, London (label on backboard); Tilly Marshall (owner of The Stone Gallery, Newcastle); thence to her son Simon Marshall (Stone Gallery label on backboard); acquired from him ca.1995 by William E. To the Royal Bavarian Director of the Court Gardens, Carl von Effner (1831-84) in Munich, thanking him for his New Year's wishes and assuring him of his favour: "Mein lieber Hofgärtendirektor von Effner! Zum Jahreswechsel brachten auch Sie Mir den Ausdruck Ihrer aufrichtig gemeinten Glückwünsche in Vorlage und bereiteten Mir hiedurch große Freude. Ich danke Ihnen für diese Kundgabe treu ergebener Gefühle und gebe Ihnen die Versicherung, daß Mein Wohlwollen Sie auch in das neue Jahr, welches für Sie ein gesegnetes sein möge, begleiten wird. Mit huldvollen Gesinnungen / Ihr / wohlgewogener König [.]". Effner, descended from a long line of gardeners in the service of the Bavarian royal court, designed the gardens for King Ludwig's famous castles, Neues Schloss, Herrenchiemsee, and Linderhof.         The Transval of New York

      New York: Johnson & Co, 1880. Map printed in colours, (sheet size:17 x 54 inches), (splits at folds expertly sealed), [with:] a 29pp. pamphlet "The Transval of New York" (New York: Johnson & Co., 1880), small 8vo (6 3/4 x 4 3/8 inches), original pebble-grained cloth-covered boards. A fine map of the region now largely Washington Heights of Manhattan; from 130th Street to Inwood Hill Park, the Henry Hudson Bridge and the northern-most tip of Manhattan Island that Viele proposed to call the Transval in reference to the valley-like gorge that runs through the area. The name never stuck and little or nothing came of Viele's proposal that this would be an excellent terminal port for lumber and grain traveling via the Erie Canal. A canal, similar to that shown on the map, was finally dug in 1923. Much of Viele's map, as with many 19th century maps of Manhattan, was "as planned" or hoped for rather than "as existing". What were there in fact were the substantial homes, designated in black on the map, of prosperous New Yorkers, who enjoyed the spectacular views of the Hudson and many of the north-south running avenues that form the axes of the present community. Viele's pamphlet gives an entertaining and detailed history of the region and a particularly good account of the Battle for Fort Washington, which, though Washington's men lost, was a valiantly fought encounter, worthy of greater renown in the annals of that war. General Viele had a distinguished career. A descendent of an old New York Dutch family, he graduated from West Point, served in the Mexican War and the Civil War, was Engineer-in-Chief of the Central Park and Prospect Park developments and served a term in Congress.         Framed Original Humorous Watercolor by Randolph Caldecott entitled "Telling the Tale"

      NA. Fine. The watercolor depicts a humorous scene in which an old duffer in a plaid suit has three young ladies in his thrall while man in the background, a self-portrait of Caldecott himself, is nodding off. The palette is of muted light colors, and the painting is pleasingly both impressionistic and detailed. N.d., circa 1880. The watercolor itself measures 24.5 by 20 cm, and in the frame, 32 by 36 cm.
