A Biographical Sketch of the Life of William B. Ide: with a minute and interesting account of one of the largest emigrating companies. (3000 miles over land), from the east to the Pacific coast. And what is claimed as the most authentic and reliable account of "the virtual conquest of California, in June, 1846, by the Bear Flag Party"

Printed for the subscribers, [Claremont, N.H.] 1880 - (6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches). [2],239,[1]pp. Half title. Expertly bound to style in period purple straight grain morocco, covers bordered in blind, upper cover lettered in gilt Provenance: E. T. Ide (signature on title) An Ide family association copy of a Bear Flag Rebellion rarity. "This Sketch contains an account of the early years of W.B. Ide, recollections by his daughter of the family's trip across the plains to California in 1845, and an account of the Bear Flag revolt of 1846 as told by Ide to his brother in 1849, and in a letter to a Senator Wambough which, as Ide died in 1852, must have been written within a few years of the event. [An] interesting account of the overland journey of 1845 and important source on the beginnings of American rule in California in 1846." (Streeter). The work is also important in that it is one of the few overland journals written from the point of view of a woman (Ide's daughter, who at eighteen accompanied her father west in 1845), and is unique in its exclusive treatment of the Bear Flag Revolt. Howes speculates that this first edition, printed by the author at the age of eighty-six on a handpress, "was probably small." A rare and important California book.         A Map of the City of New York by the Commissioners Appointed by an Act of the Legislature Passed April 3rd, 1807. Commissioners' Plan of 1811

New York: C. Van Benthuysen & Sons, 1880. unbound. Map. Lithograph. Image measures 23" x 39". This unique publication of the original 1811 "Commissioners' Plan" of New York City, was issued as part of "The special and local laws affecting public interests in the city of New York. In force on January 1, 1880." The map covers Manhattan from the Battery to 155th Street, including Great Barn Island (modern day Wards Island). Also includes remarks and seals of John Randel, Gouverneur Morris, John Rutherfurd and Simeon De Witt as they appear on the original plan. The 1811 Commissioners Plan, of which this map is a copy of, is considered to be "the single most important document in New York City's development". Based on John Randel's surveys of 1807, It formally lays out New York City's famous grid system. Also known as "Manhattan's Master Plan", it was adopted by New York City's Common Council for the development and sale of land above Houston Street, which was at the time a patchwork of farms, houses and estates. The Slate Legislature appointed Gouverneur Morris, John Rutherfurd and Simeon De Witt the "Commissioners of Streets and Roads". Based on the surveys of John Randel, the Commissioners submitted their plan in 1811, which established the grid up to 155th street. The plan is considered to be visionary, and defines Manhattan to this day. Central Park, not envisioned until 1853, is not part of the plan. There are smaller squares named Harlem, Bloomingdale and Manhattan as well as the Grand Parade, which is today Madison Square Park. The map is in good condition with some toning and wear along folds, including minor losses. Lined for stability. This map, although a copy of the original "Commissioners Plan", is a rare find.

An important autograph working draft of an unpublished letter to the publisher, Giulio Ricordi, discussing the staging of four of Verdi's best-known operas and two of his vocal pieces

4 pp. Octavo. Dated Genoa, January 9, 1880. Written in dark brown ink. Unsigned. Heavily worked, with extensive deletions and revisions. An urgent and impassioned draft in which Verdi writes about six of his own works: his operas Aida, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La forza del destino and his vocal pieces Pater Noster and Ave Maria. In something of a frenzy, the composer calls the recent performance of Rigoletto at La Scala "un fiasco" and that of Aida "un semifiasco." Verdi goes on to discuss Ricordi's publication of two of his recently-composed vocal works, the Pater Noster and the Ave Maria. He insists that Ricordi publish the Pater Noster as in the original and tells him that he will send him a copy of the Ave Maria to be issued as a piano reduction. "It's not a matter of punishing anybody.. but I just wanted to avoid a bother with a new public flop. Nothing else... The conductor who was directing the choir must be able to read a short score, right?... Reduce the individual pieces in whatever hell of a key you want. I will send you the Ave Maria tomorrow or the day after, whose simple instrumental part you'll be able to reduce for the piano. So, at La Scala... a semi-fiasco with Aida, a fiasco with Rigoletto and I foresee one for Trovatore... how could it be otherwise? ... Without a single decent singer... In Rigoletto if the tenor is the best one, eternal God! imagine the rest of them! And in Trovatore! ... an ugly screeching..." In a postscript to the document, Verdi discusses the possible staging of both La forza del destino and Aida in Naples, and suggests that Ricordi negotiate with Lampugnani in this regard: "Interested in imploring you to stage Forza del destino in Naples... That theatre is better than many others. After that Aida and Rigoletto at La Scala we may very well do Aida in Naples... Make an agreement with Lampugnani. I'd be grateful for it." Very slightly worn; creased at folds and at one corner. . The majority of the text of this document is unpublished (not included in the Carteggio Verdi-Ricordi). Only the text of the postscript is known, which Verdi sent to Ricordi as a telegram on January 11, 1880, two days after writing the present, somewhat heated, draft. Verdi was characteristically quite involved in the business aspects of his art. The present document, relative to some of the most important works in the composer's oeuvre, lends important insight into his detailed and often somewhat heated dealings with his publisher Ricordi.

The Christian Year ? [with] STANLEY, Henry Morton. Single sheet message to General Ponsonby to pass thanks on to Queen Victoria for her message. December 6 1889

London: Suttaby & Co, 1880. 10 photographs laid down. xii, 383, [1ads] pp. 8vo. Black coarse grain morocco, spine gilt, a.e.g. 10 photographs laid down. xii, 383, [1ads] pp. 8vo. A WEDDING GIFT FROM ONE OF STANLEY'S SENIOR OFFICERS. A wonderful souvenir from Stanley's wedding with a significant association. The inscription reads in part: "To Henry M Stanley Esq / Dear Sir, / Accept this book on this your nuptial day as a souvenir from one of your companions through the late arduous Expedition. With best wishes & long life & happiness Faithfully yours William Bonny."Bonny was one of four army officers chosen by Stanley to lead his Emin Pasha relief expedition, 1886-9. His official capacity was as medical assistant (to Surgeon Thomas Parke) and in Stanley's account of the expedition, In Darkest Africa, he says "I had frequent occassions to remark to him that his goodwill and devotion were equal to that shown by the others, and as for bravery, I think he has as much as the bravest."Emin Pasha was the governor of Equatorial Sudan, who appealed for help once he found himself engulfed in the same Mahdist uprising as General Gordon in 1885. Stanley finally located Emin in 1888 along the shores of Lake Ujiji - though he was not, in fact, minded to be rescued. Stanley had split his party into two groups, the Advance Column being those travelling with him and then the Rear Column who would camp at Yambuya on the Aruwimi. It was Bonny who first advised Stanley of the disastrous state of the Rear Column and of the impropriety of Barttelot and Jameson. Stanley came to see Bonny as a key ally. He was, in fact, one of just three people to see a pre-publication copy of In Darkest Africa. Tim Jeal explains: "Stanley knew that one day, if he were to have problems with the Barttelot and Jameson families, he would need Bonny to go public with his account of the terrible things that had gone on at Yambuya" (Jeal, 399).         Experiences of a Colonist Forty Years Ago; A Journey from Port Phillip to South Australia in 1839 and A Voyage from Port Phillip to Adelaide in 1846. By an Old Hand

Adelaide, J. Williams, Printer [for the Author], 1880 [second edition]/ 1879 - Octavo, [viii], 84; 80; 23 pages plus 3 albumen paper photographs of 5 drawings on 3 unnumbered leaves. Gilt- and blind-stamped blue cloth a little bumped and rubbed at the extremities, with minor wear to the corners; spine sunned, with a slightly lighter spot near the centre where a paper label (an old auction lot number) has been removed; front cover has some light stains on it where something has been spilt (removing some of the gilt from the top left-hand border); rear flyleaf removed, with offsetting to the final page; a very good copy (internally excellent). The particulars of the photographs match those given in Holden (where the discrepancy in the number of plates present as against listed is explained). The plates are of drawings by Hamilton; he contributed similar sketches to the published journals of Grey and Eyre. The first edition was not photographically illustrated. This copy is inscribed in ink on the front flyleaf 'From G. Hamilton to Capt Dashwood with the Author's best wishes, 22 Dec 1880'. George Frederick Dashwood (1806-1881) arrived in South Australia in the early 1840s; in 1843, he 'was appointed one of the four non-official nominees in South Australia's first Legislative Council. From 1847 to 1852 he was commissioner of police' (Australian Dictionary of Biography). George Hamilton (1812-1883) succeeded him in that role in 1867, retiring the year before his death. He arrived in Adelaide in 1839 when he overlanded cattle along Charles Bonney's southern route. A most satisfying association copy, presented from one significant pioneer to another in the twilight of their lives. Ferguson 10184 (inadequately describing the plates); Holden 49.
