Collection of mineral specimens and fossils.

1880 - Original mahogany ox (38 x 25 x 20 cm), containing a collection of 216 mineral specimens and fossils in five trays, together with a book comprising a manuscript listing of the collection formed by James Tennant, 1880, specimens from Ceylon, America, Reigate, Cornwall, and other places. This impressive collection of minerals was sold by James Tennant (1808-1881), one of the most prominent mineralogists of the 19th century, professor of geological mineralogy at King's College and mineralogist to Queen Victoria. Presented in a beautiful mahogany box, the collection is spread over five layers and comprises specimens of rocks, shells and fossils from all around the world. It originates from the Tennant's shop, which was located at 149 Strand, London and offered all manners of geological specimens, shaped stone ornaments, models, storage cabinets and objects for the microscope. Together with the box comes a small book comprising printed texts related to Tennant's work and a manuscript list of all the specimens contained inside. One of the texts is a 1878 detailed list of the previous year's UK mineral production by county and by type. It is followed by a guide to the Wakefield Tower exhibition, which presented the crown jewels and the famous Koh-i-noor diamond, "the most splendid jewel in the possession of Her Majesty". It also includes content of the lectures given by Professor Tennant at his residence on the Strand and three pages of notes on diamonds from the Cape of Good Hope accompanied by illustrations. The manuscript list dated December 1880 and written by James Tennant himself provides names and origin of all the 216 items included in the box. It is divided into the following groups: minerals which are either the components of rocks or are found embedded in them (1-46), combustible minerals (47-52), metals and metalliferous minerals (53-76), rocks (77-106), fossils (107-109), Pliocene (110-123), Eocene (124-149), Cretaceous (150-168), Oolite (169-177), Lias (178-184), Carboniferous (185-189), Carboniferous limestone (190-197), Devonian (198-201), Silurian (202-212) and lower Silurian (213-216). Tennant's first acquaintance with minerals came at an early age, when he worked as an apprentice to John Mawe, a renowned London dealer of geological specimens. After attending classes at the Royal Institution, he was appointed as a teacher and later professor of geological mineralogy at King's College. In 1838, he was elected a fellow of the Geological Society and in 1862, President of the Geological Association. When diamonds were first found in South Africa, like Tennant had predicted they would be, he himself maintained their genuineness. He superintended the recut of one the world's largest diamonds, the koh-i-noor, as he was appointed "mineralogist to the Queen" in 1840.

I-IV zusätzlich nummeriert) - daher hier insgesamt 3.366 farbige & 9 unkolorierte Tafeln enthalten. 45000 Gramm.

New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, [ca. 1880]. - 114,[46]pp. including illustrations. Publisher's printed wrappers. Minor shelf wear, upper spine repaired with tape, rear wrapper similarly repaired. Internally very clean. Very good. Jonathan H. Green, "the reformed gambler," is the most important figure in the early literature of American gambling. A famed gambler in his youth, he was known for his talents from Texas to Boston and all points in between. He abandoned gambling just shy of age thirty, and became an advocate against it, seeking to expose the tricks of the trade. Here he offers the inside scoop on games such as Dog Loo (played on the Red River), Whist, Thimbles (or cups), Poker, and Euchre, and on techniques such as palming, lapping, forcing cards, shuffling, cutting, dealing, stocking the pack, and cogging dice. Many other interesting subjects are also discussed, including horse racing, and nailing a card to a wall by a pistol shot. Green adds numerous tales of personal experience, and the illustrations offer the reader the ability to recognize common sleights of hand. Of course, by offering detailed information on how to recognize gamblers' tricks, Green is also providing an advanced tutorial for the aspiring gambler or cheat. The copyright date on the verso of the titlepage appears to read 1850 (the first year of publication), but the worn type throughout, as well as the other titles advertised as available by Dick and Fitzgerald, indicates that this edition was likely produced around 1880. In any edition, a rare and significant work. TOOLE-STOTT 324.

[Wyoming, 1880. Very minor wear. Near fine. A pair of lovely watercolors of the camp of two U.S. Infantry companies in Wyoming Territory during the Ute War in 1879-80. The watercolors show the camp of K and F companies of the Ninth Infantry near the Snake River. Based on the scenery, these must depict the southern part of Jackson's Hole, the only area which corresponds to the views shown. One shows the camp during the summer, and the other shows it in the winter. The camp was established in a valley, which is shown as lush and green in the summer scene, but barren and snow-covered in the winter scene. A note on the verso of the summer scene says that the "pictures were painted with water colors by a soldier of this command." The verso of each card contains pencil descriptions of each scene. For example, in the comments on the summer scene it is noted that "the brush back of the tents are sage brush...the timber back of the camp follows the river still to the right are mountains and hills with cedar timbers." Some of the text on the verso of the winter scene discusses the various buildings in the camp, including the cook's house and the sutler's store. The Ninth Infantry was ordered into the field as part of Army strategy during the Ute War, and established their camp along the Snake River in Wyoming Territory in November 1879. They remained there until July 1880. Original artwork from the Indian wars of the West is rare.

Pueblo Laguna, N.M. [1880-1881].. Mounted albumen photograph, 33 x 25 cm., on contemporary bristol board. Some dampstaining on mount, small chip in center of photograph (in the empty sky). Withal, a fine image. A fine view of Pueblo Laguna, taken by the important frontier photographer, Jack Hillers, during the Bureau of American Ethnology Expedition of 1880-81. Hillers' work was made famous by Frederick S. Dellenbaugh in his book, CANYON VOYAGE. After learning the art of photography from professionals such as E.O. Beaman and James Fennemore (photographers on the early Powell expeditions), Hillers became the official photographer with the Powell expeditions of 1872-76 and 1878, recording many beautiful images in Arizona and southern Utah. He eventually surpassed his instructors in both technique and artistic sense, and this image, from a New Mexico pueblo, reflects his advancing photographic skill. The image is of the pueblo at some distance, but it is nevertheless clear and sharp. "Jack Hillers emerged as an outstanding practitioner of the wet-plate trade" - Goetzmann. Goetzmann, EXPLORATION AND EMPIRE, pp.560-61. Taft, PHOTOGRAPHY & THE AMERICAN SCENE, pp.288-91.

        Zebra Herd

Great Britain:: Original Watercolor,, [c.1880-1900].. Archivally Framed. Fine/ . Fine original watercolor on rag paper. (25.4 x 17.7 cm). Matted in Rag. Framed in one inch gilt basket weave moulding. Condition: Fine, with minor aged paper remains to verso corners from previous mount watermarked 1902. Pathos notwithstanding and made all the more alluring by want of attribution, this vivid watercolor scene (Lively herd of running Zebras) was envisioned and thus executed not by a professional artist, field naturalist or explorer but by an amateur, or armchair, traveler/naturalist /painter. The drama evident yet depiction gentle, this watercolor quite plausibly was painted by a young Victorian gentlewoman who would have learned the art of nature painting, as was the custom, and who would have sought inspiration from the grand natural history color plate volumes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This bold and vivid naturalists' display of a tapestry of dappled foliage or the crystalline translucence of disturbed water or the splendid reticulated plumage is clearly stylized by a primitive eye, yet executed with an accomplished and refined hand; the technique is learned. The resulting composition is one of dramatic charm.

Scribner's Monthly - August 1880 Mormon Origin & Bible Controversy Charles Dickens, Horology, Fra Savonarola, French Republic, Canada, Whippoorwills, the Grandissimes, Peter the Great, Curiosities of Advertising, American Diplomacy, Seymour Haden

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1880 Very Good. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, August 1880. First Edition. Numerous illustrations from engravings. 9.75" x 6.5", original pale lavender wraps perfect-bound wraps, 8 pp. + 161 pp. + 16 pp. supplemental articles + ads. Some chipping along bottom edge, some soiling. No, that's not a crease at lower right - that's a bit of flippancy in Scribner's Holiday Issue cover design. A Strong Very Good, or a bit more, with even a virtually complete spine (albeit end-tweaked -see scan). something of a rarity in that regard. See scans. Contents extraordinarily clean and bright. The original issue, in wraps - not from the hardbound aggregations - of the August,1880 issue which contains Ellen E. Dickinson's article, "The Book of Mormon" ["manuscript found" ], dealing with the claim of the daughter of Reverend Solomon Spaulding that her father had, in fact, written a work [based on his actual experiences, it is claimed, at mounds he excavated near Conneaut, Ohio, in 1812] which was subsequently usurped by Joseph Smith for the creation of the Book of Mormon. Fascinating reading, and the writing has a ring of authenticity to it, un-hyped and oddly down-to-earth, direct and sincere and simple for the language of the day - though I am certainly no expert on the subject. Other topics in this issue of the always thoroughly illustrated Scribner's Monthly - almost all thoroughly illustrated with engravings - are: About England with (Charles) Dickens, Fra Girolamo Savonarola, The French Republic, Canada, Whippoorwills, the Grandissimes, Peter the Great, Curiosities of Advertising, American Diplomacy, Rivers (superb engravings), and the etchings of Seymour Haden. Supplemental section has an interesting piece, with charts, on horology: 'Extract from the Judges in Horology', from the 1879-1880 Sydney International Exhibition', with three charts which compare the performance of top watchmakers of the time. Very scarce as the in-wraps original. See scans. LG13

        La Republique de 1879.

[France, c. 1880]. - Oblong 4to. French ms. on paper. 46 pen-and-ink drawings on plates (numbered 1-48; wants 2, 17, and 18); 2 mounted photo prints. Contemp. half calf with giltstamped cover title "Album". Interesting album containing political caricatures of a high quality, levelled at the state and society of the Third Republic under President Grévy (1879-87). During his term, France underwent strong social and political changes which are immediately reflected in the drawings. Obviously the work of a professional caricaturist, they were probably intended for publication in newspapers and magazines (or may even have been published). Some pictures poke fun at everyday events, others provide a comment on the developments of several months. - Several drawings tipped in; also includes two revised photographs of drawings (a third one is lacking).

Framed Original Humorous Watercolor by Randolph Caldecott entitled "Telling the Tale"

      - The watercolor depicts a humorous scene in which an old duffer in a plaid suit has three young ladies in his thrall while man in the background, a self-portrait of Caldecott himself, is nodding off. The palette is of muted light colors, and the painting is pleasingly both impressionistic and detailed. N.d., circa 1880. The watercolor itself measures 24.5 by 20 cm, and in the frame, 32 by 36 cm.
