Four original vintage albumen paper photographs of Bungaree Station, near Clare in South Australia

      - The photographs are mounted on both sides of a large piece of card (447 x 335 mm); each one is set within a thin black ink border with a neat calligraphic title written underneath it. On one side are Bungaree Woolshed (170 x 220 mm) and Bungaree Shearers (157 x 210 mm); on the other side, Bungaree Garden (165 x 220 mm) and Bungaree Buck Board (168 x 222 mm). Apart from a little foxing visible in the sky, the photographs are in fine condition. The blind-stamp of 'Captn Sweet Landscape Photographer Adelaide' can be found in the bottom right-hand corner of Bungaree Shearers if you look hard enough. The State Library of South Australia has an example of the buck-board image with Sweet's negative number 674 scratched into the emulsion. The State Library of Victoria has a group (flock?) of shearers posed in front of the stone building shown in the centre of our woolshed photograph; our blokes are lambing it up in front of a corrugated iron woolshed. Both of these institutions date their images circa 1880. Bungaree station was founded in 1841 by George Hawker; five generations and 174 years later, it is still in family hands.         Seedsman's sample book of horticulture and floriculture, including fruits, flowers, and ornamental trees.

Rochester, NY: J. W. Thompson & Co.,, [c.1880]. Octavo (223 x 149 mm when closed, 223 x 429 mm when opened). Contemporary brown grained skiver, paper label on front cover inscribed "John H. Norris", blue striped decorative cloth endleaves, brown linen hinges between the plate triptych sections, plates joined by purple cloth ribbons. 108 colour plates (97 hand-coloured theorem stencil plates, 11 chromolithographs, a number given a heightened sheen through the application of gum arabic); plate sizes 205 x 129 mm., arranged back-to-back as a triptych in rows of three mounted on white linen hinges, which when opened allows 6 plates to be viewed at a time. Light abrasions to binding, small bump on back cover, occasional offsetting, but in remarkably good condition. A scarce survival in an unusual format from one of the most important centres of the 19th century American nursery business: a seedsman's sample book, or "tree pedlar's" catalogue. The firm of J. W. Thompson & Co specialised in producing pocket size portfolios for nursery firms, or salesmen, tailoring them to the individual market in varieties of ornamental trees, fruits and flowers. This example includes large decorative conifers (including Scotch Pine and Norway Spruce) as well as deciduous varieties (including Weeping Mountain Ash and Kilmarnock Weeping Willow), many examples of fruit (three of pear, six of cherry, six plums and apricots, nine of grapes, one each of mulberry and huckleberry, rhubarb, four of strawberry, two of gooseberry, six of blackberry, raspberry and currant), and six of roses among other flowers. However, the main emphasis here is on apples, with 27 varieties illustrated. The original owner, John H. Norris was a nursery salesman who travelled the Willamette Valley of Oregon in the late 1870s and early 1880s, a period of tremendous growth in that region's apple orchards. These catalogues were expensive productions, and their owners were instructed not to allow customers (largely farmers who may have come straight from toiling in field and orchard) to handle them, and if that should happen and they should get soiled, then they were to have them trimmed and rebound. Many nurserymen would rebind their catalogues as often as every two years. This catalogue was obviously well cared for, the plates seeming to be entirely untrimmed. English-born John Wrigley Thompson (1826-1900) produced nurserymen's colour plates from 1876 until 1891, focussing initially on producing what is known as theorem stencil plates, a system that involved multiple overlays. "While they were at the forefront of modern promotional strategies like advertisements and catalogues, many nurseries also depended on the personal contact of nursery agents or 'tree pedlars' to extend horticultural interest... [and] plant peddling came into its own as a horticultural sales technique with the mid-nineteenth-century rise of commercial nurserymen... As plant peddling flourished, a new industry also developed to assist independent agents in their sales techniques. In 1858, Dellon Marcus Dewey, a Rochester bookseller, began producing brightly coloured illustrations of fruits, flowers, and ornamental trees that he called 'plates'. Taking his cue from nursery agents who used preserved fruit specimens, newspaper illustrations, or pictures clipped from horticultural magazines to illustrate their wares, Dewey reasoned that professional-looking illustrations would heighten customer interest and the pedlar's credibility" (Cheryl Lyon-Jenness, For Shade and For Comfort: Democratizing Horticulture in the Nineteenth-Century Midwest, 2004, pp. 135 & 137). "From the 1850s, as Rochester [NY] became an important centre of nursery gardening, another local industry grew up to provide illustrations of fruit, flowers, shrubs, trees, selections of which were used as catalogues by travelling 'tree peddlers' who sold plants from the nurseries they represented to farmers and gardeners in the territories they visited. The earliest illustrations of this kind were watercolours copied by local artists, but soon their production was made more efficient by the use of stencils to provide theorem paintings of flowers and fruit. Printed outlines or lithographs were also coloured by hand until chromolithographs added colour to the basic process, though even then they were often finished by hand" (Sandra Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona, 1990, p.167). A wonderful example in terms of construction and vibrancy of colour and bearing a close relationship to the directness of American naïve art

Shogaku Jorei Shikizukai (Elementary Illustrated Etiquette Book For Young Women)

Tokyo: Sonbe Okura, 1880. Orihon (accordion-fold). Very Good. Ginko (Heisichi Adachi). 12mo. Ukiyo-e woodblock book. Series of 10 beautiful accordian-bound hand-colored woodblock diptych illustrations depicting etiquette lessons at a 'finishing' school for young Japanese women. Light wear and soiling; some of the folds have small splits; looks like two have been reinforced with tissue or transparent archival tape. Ginko, who worked between 1873 and 1908 under several studio names, is best known for his prints in the ukiyo-e style as a member of the Utagawa school. He worked with a variety of subjects including depictions of beautiful women and actors, landscapes, book illustrations, and contemporary events. He was jailed and fined in 1889 for satirically depicting Emperor Meiji as a skeleton.

Alice and Other Fairy Plays for Children

London: W. Swan Sonnenschein and Allen,, 1880. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and vignettes to spine and front board in gilt and black, all edges gilt, cream coated endpapers. Frontispiece with tissue-guards, 7 plates, 4 pictorial initials by Mary Sibree, and music scores to accompany each play. An excellent copy. First edition of the first printed dramatic adaptation of the Alice stories, and the first version to appear without Tenniel's illustrations. The volume includes two illustrations of Alice and a picture initial of Alice by Mary Sibree. The play was "intended to be acted for children" (Cohen, p. 402) and includes scenes from both Alice books, together with musical settings for "Speak Roughly" and "Beautiful Soup". Having failed to engage Arthur Sullivan to write some songs for a musical production in 1877, Dodgson might have been expected to be protective of his copyright, but he proved amenable: in the preface the author writes, "I have to express my sincerest gratitude to Mr. Lewis Carroll for the permission to dramatize his charming story." On 6 November 1879 the author presented a copy to Dodgson, which he sent back for inscription: "I may candidly confess, it would be a much higher gratification to me to possess a copy given to me by the author, with my name written in it in her own hand". Ten years later, on 19 December 1889 he notes in his diary "Went over to Birmingham to see a performance of 'Alice' (Mrs. Freiligrath-Kroeker's version) at the High School."

Archive and Scrapbook of Aerial Balloonist C. W. Williams of Williams & Young]

ca. 1880-1890, Various - Folio. Ornate commercial Victorian album. 43pp. on 22 leaves, all but last both recto and verso, covered with a variety of scrap - mostly newspaper clippings. Several dozen more clippings additionally loosely laid in. Also included: several promotional broadsides and a small selection of business documents (letterhead, promotional flyers, etc.) for Williams & Young's air show, several small original sketches by Williams, a 7pp. manuscript entirely in Williams' hand entitled "Biograph of the World Famous Aeronaut C. W. Williams," plus an additional 1+p. manuscript essay also by Williams on parachuting. Scrapbook fair condition only. Spine perished. Several leaves loose, toning through, and chipping to the edges. Overall, fragile. Manuscripts also worn and a bit fragile, but entirely legible. Remainder of documents very good. Though manned ballooning was pioneered in the late 18th century in Europe, it took longer to establish itself in the States. However, by the middle of the 1800s, ballooning was a popular American entertainment, featured both in circuses and other traveling shows, as well as in festivals and on its own. Here offered is an important archive of a pioneering aeronaut and a substantial record of 19th century ballooning, assembled by a prominent practitioner. Williams and Young were most active from the early 1880s through the early 1890s (when Young perished in a ballooning accident). The duo were best known for their "Parachute Jump For Life," in which Williams ascended to 5000 feet and parachuted to safety below. The duo were also purported to have the largest hot air balloon in the world at the time, some 50 feet high and 70 feet around. They worked throughout the country and on both sides of the Atlantic. The scrapbook portion of the archive covers not only the exploits of the compiler's own company, but also those of their fellow balloonists. Indeed, the clippings alone amount to an impressively comprehensive portrait of ballooning as it neared the end of its popularity (the Wright brothers first flight was 1903) - and demonstrates both Williams' love of aeronautics and his careful monitoring of his competition. Together with the manuscripts and business portions, a rare primary collection relating not only to early flight but to its business and promotion as well. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America in Congress. [Benjamin Tyler-Giles Lithograph printing of the Declaration of Independence]

Durham and New York: The Giles Lithographic and Liberty Printing Co. for Mess. W. Duke, Sons & Company, 1880. Broadside. Very Good. Lithographic print on faux parchment. Approximately 20.5" x 27". Original metal trim still present at top and bottom. Minor edge wear and light wrinkling. Three short marginal tears, mended on verso with what appears to be tissue or archival tape. This reprint of the Declaration of Independence is of the famous facsimile originally published by Benjamin Owen Tyler in 1818. Tyler's documents were the first to produce the Declaration in script and included exceptionally realistic signatures of the signers. "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the Facsimiles exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every Capital as in the original. . . . [The signatures] are curiously exact imitations, so much so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them . . . from the original." (Bidwell, #2, pp. 286-287) As also noted by Bidwell (see the note after the entry on p. 287), Giles lithographs are facsimiles of Tyler's work. These were produced as premiums for Duke tobacco products and could only be obtained by redeeming certificates from 75 packets of Duke products. As such, it is likely that few of these lithographs remain, and they may possibly be as scarce as the Tyler originals. As of 2015, no examples are listed in OCLC, and Bidwell found only one example at the New York Public Library as well as a photostat reproduction at the American Antiquarian Society. Between ABPC, the Rare Book Hub, and Worthpoint, only two examples are shown as having been sold at auction; one for $1,024 in 2009 and one for $7,995 in 2011.

Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton PC (25 May 1803 18 January 1873), was an English politician, poet, playwright, and novelist. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of bestselling dime-novels which earned him a considerable fortune. He coined several phrases that would become clichés, especially the great unwashed, pursuit of the almighty dollar, the pen is mightier than the sword, as well as the famous opening line “It was a dark and stormy night”. Pelham brought him public acclaim and established his reputation as a wit and dandy. Its intricate plot and humorous, intimate portrayal of pre-Victorian dandyism kept gossips busy trying to associate public figures with characters in the book. 27. April 1879. (Lieferungstitel).

Perles, Wien 1880 - Wien, Perles 1880. Quer-Großfolio (68 x 37,5 cm). Titelblatt, [4] Bl. Text, [46] Bl. Tafeln mit montierten Original-Chromolithographien. Illustrierte rote Original-Ganzleinenmappe. Einband etwas fleckig. Illustrierte rote Original-Ganzleinenmappe.

        The Complete Poker-Player

Dick & Fitzgerald Publishers, New York 1880 - Second edition, later printing. x, [11]-142, [2, catalogue] pp. 12mo. One of the Earliest Poker Manuals. A fine copy of the second edition of this foundational work on poker. The rare first edition of 1875 - with only one copy located on OCLC - is, along with Winterblossom's The Game of Draw Poker, the earliest published work dedicated solely to poker. Blackbridge attempts to legitimize poker, and gambling and gaming in general, harmonizing it with Christian values and drawing comparisons to generally respected professions that trade in risk, such as that of banker and insurance provider. Beyond the moralizing tone, Blackbridge's work provides a technical and probabilistic discussion of the game, and includes a section on "Probabilities at Draw-Poker" by Dr. Pole. The rules printed in Chapter XIX are adapted from The American Hoyle. A third edition was published by Dick & Fitzgerald in 1884. Jessel 122; Horr 167; All In 13 Publisher's green cloth with gilt-stamped title and illustration of hand holding four aces.         The Photophone

Dawson Brothers, Montreal 1880 - First Edition. [385]-448 pages. 8vo. Original light orange printed wrappers. The copy of "A. H. Foord", with his name and street address in pencil at top of front wrapper. Minor soiling and edge chipping to the wrappers. In the Canadian Naturalist, Vol IX, No 7, New Series, Dec. 29th, 1880. The paper is found on pages 397-407, and is the address before the American Association at Boston in August of 1880. Wraps. Here, Alexander Graham Bell explains the genesis of his idea, followed by an extensive history of selenium and the part it played in the the photophone. The photophone used light pulses, and selenium's photoconductivity to convert sound into light pulses, and back again to sound at the other end. Bell credits Taintor with the implementation of the apparatus, which was sent to the Smithsonian in a sealed box.In hindsight, Bell may have anticipated the entire field of fiber optic transmission: "It was evidently necessary, in order to reduce the idea to practice, to devise an apparatus to be operated by the voice of the speaker, by which variations could be produced in a parallel beam of light, corresponding to the variations in the air produced by the voice." (p. 401) In concept, this is exactly what fiber optic transmission equipment does - encoding information on one end, transmitting it, and decoding it at the other. "Even before the work of Hertz, Bell had transmitted speech over a beam of light and was granted a patent in 1880 (US 235496 A ) for a device which he called the 'photophone'. An improvement was worked out in the Boston laboratory of the American Bell Telephone Company in 1897 on which a fundamental patent was issued [which according to Lloyd Espenschied covers for the first time the modulation of radiant energy by a voice current and, in a sense, is the basis for all amplitude modulated radio and carrier telephone systems.] (History Bell System, Engineering, Vol 1, p362)Unfortunately the new device's transmission distance was only tested to 213 meters, and it had the same issues as any line-of-sight signaling technique. In "The City of Light : The Story of Fiber Optics" author Hecht points out that although the discovery was exciting to Bell, the practicalities (weather and radio) doomed it. The concept still spread like wildfire. We offer what is most likely the first Canadian edition, dated December 29, 1880. The first American printing is American Journal of Science", Third series, Vol. XX, No. 118, October 1880, followed closely by an article in the Scientific American, Supplement 246, September 18, 1880. pp. 3921-3923. There is also a French edition (Paris: 1880), and a Leipzig edition in the same year. Foord is most probably "the English palaeontologist and scientific illustrator Arthur Humphreys Foord (1844-1933)" (Geological Society of America). See Hecht, City of Light: The Story of Fiber Optics, pp. 80-82 for a nice discussion of the evolution of fiber optics. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Entire piece measures 13 inches x 16.5 inches. Three days earlier on May 8, 1871, President Grant had signed the Treaty of Washington, settling the so-called "Alabama Claims," whereby the U.S. sought reparations from the United Kingdom for attacks on U.S. ships by the British built ship, CSS Alabama, and other Confederate ships that were sold to the rebel states during the Civil War. The British government agreed to pay the U.S. $15.5 million.

Outstanding collection of early architectural photographs featuring buildings in Chicago, Cleveland, New York City, Buffalo, Boston, and Michigan]

[Chicago, Cleveland, New York City, Buffalo, Boston, and Battle Creek, MI 1880 - 219 albumen photographs, backed on linen. A handful of photos in the second volume dampstained. Contemporary cloth. Housed in a black morocco-backed box. An amazing collection of photographs of Gilded Age mansions in Chicago An astounding collection of photographs highlighting the golden age of architecture in Chicago, particularly the style of Richardsonian Romanesque, named for the prominent architect Henry Hobson Richardson. Some of Richardson's own work is featured in this archive, including some of his buildings in Cleveland and Boston. Other architects represented in these photographs include an array of the most famous designers in Chicago during the latter part of the 19th century, such as Daniel Burnham, John Wellborn Root, Franklin Pierce Burnham, Willoughby J. Edbrooke, Joseph Lyman Silsbee, Solon Spencer Beman, H.M. Hansen, John J. Flanders, William Carbys Zimmerman, and other partnerships, including Wheelock & Clay, Mason & Rice, Treat & Foltz, Cobb & Frost, Patton & Fisher, and more. Some of the photographs carry stamps from these architects on the verso, including Henry Ives and L.G. Hallburg, while others are identified through pencil notations or by captions in the negative, likely by the photographic firm that produced the images. The archive also includes architectural works from firms in other cities, including Marling & Burdett and Green & Wicks in Buffalo, N.Y. (both of whom had worked and studied in Chicago - Marling under Beaman and Burdett under Richardson), and C.F. Schweinfurth, Coburn & Barnum, and George Smith in Cleveland. Some of the identifiable buildings in this collection include the Potter Palmer residence, the McWilliams residence, the Borden house, the Ransom Cable residence, the McGill house, Chicago City Hall (designed by James Egan), the Hair & Ridgway Building, and H.H. Richardson's McVay residence (among about a half dozen other buildings identified as Richardson designs). A healthy amount of the images show buildings at various stages of construction, a rare feature for albums of architectural photographs like this. Though the subject matter includes buildings in several cities, the photographs themselves, or at least the printing of the photographs all seem to be the work of a single Chicago architectural photography studio, explaining why architectural works from disparate cities are presented together. Seemingly all of the photographs emanate from the Chicago photographic firm of Allgeier, with a handful of photographs from Allgeier & Bertwistle. The second volume includes numerous images focusing on interior design, as well as close-up details of various architectural features of buildings in Chicago, including the aforementioned Hair & Ridgway Building. The third volume contains views of railroad stations, namely Battle Creek Depot in Michigan (designed by Rogers & MacFarland of Detroit) and another unidentified station in New York, as well as additional buildings in Chicago and New York. An amazing archive of Richardsonian Romanesque architectural photographs from the style's heyday. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Gawler Handbook. A Record of the Rise and Progress of that important Town; to which are added Memoirs of McKinlay the Explorer and Dr Nott

Goodfellow & Hele [almost certainly the Author - James Dally was convinced], Adelaide 1880 - Octavo, 182, 30 (advertisements) pages plus 6 lithographed plates (of farm machinery by James Martin & Co.) and 17 albumen paper carte-de-visite photographs individually mounted on tipped-in captioned leaves. Blind-decorated blue cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; cloth slightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities, a little marked, and lightly sunned on the spine; some mounts lightly creased (a production flaw); a few trifling signs of use; a very good copy (but internally fine, with the photographs in superb condition). With the pictorial bookplate of J. Cluny Harkness (Federal President of the Chamber of Manufactures in the 1950s, according to Trove). Ferguson 11744; Holden 70. Holden's entry is more accurate and informative, although the photographs may vary slightly between copies. The photograph facing page 17 in this copy is of the 'Gawler Institute' (showing the Institute building and Town Hall), rather than 'Frankel's Hotel' as called for in Holden. These variations notwithstanding, two separate editions were produced: one in wrappers, with advertisements on the verso of the front cover and on both sides of the rear cover, without photographs (but with the lithographs not noted by Ferguson); the other in gilt-lettered cloth, without the cover advertisements, containing 17 mounted photographs plus the lithographs. Both contain 30 pages of advertisements at the rear. Rare in any state, and in our view, the version on offer is one of the more important and interesting photographically illustrated books produced in Australia. 'The handbook is illustrated with a number of views by Mr J. Taylor, the local photographic artist, representing the most important edifices and establishments in town' (Holden, quoting a contemporary review). The frontispiece is a portrait of John McKinlay (1819-1872); there are 14 pages devoted to him (he married a Gawler woman in the early 1850s and was based in the town until his death). Justice is not done to the other photographs in describing them prosaically as 'the most important edifices and establishments in town'. Without exception, signs of life and day-to-day activities flesh out the images, and most of the businesses - butcher shop, photographic studio, cordial factory, furnishing warehouse, music emporium - feature well-stocked windows or yards and numerous staff members or customers. Holden reproduces two interesting ones (including perhaps the best, the butcher shop, captioned merely 'Hodgson & Clements'), but there are wonderful vignettes in many others. Not least of these are the horse-drawn tram in front of the 'Commercial Bank' and the ornate hearse outside 'F. Fowler's Furnishing Warehouse'. While we are on the subject of death, one chapter stands out. Among those to be expected, say on 'Horticultural and Agricultural Progress. Gardens around Gawler', or 'The Humbug Society. Flam! Bam! Sham!', or 'The Streets - Number of Businesses - Description of Hotels', there is Chapter XI: 'The Neville and Adamson Tragedy'. Its thirteen pages describe in great detail the events surrounding the double suicide 'and its romantic accomplishment' of Neville and his partner Adamson. 'It is universally believed that Neville was the leading spirit in the suicide, and so strong was Adamson's affection, love, friendship, or whatever it may be termed, for his companion, that he consented to take that final leap in the dark in the wine cellar, with him to visit that "bourne whence none return"'.
