YOUNG JAPAN: Yokohama and Yedo A Narrative of the Settlementand the City from th

London 1880-81, Trubner. Yellow pictorial cloth, 2 vols.. 418+522p., with 15 albumen photographs,1 folding reprodution. map, spine splits, only a few copies with photos, co-publi-. shed by Kelly, Yokohama, 15 x 24 cm. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. A MOST IMPORTANT EARLY BRITISH PRIMARY RESOURCE ON JAPAN An important primary source, written by the former editor of the "Japan Herald," the "Japan Gazette," "Far East," "Nisshin Shinjishi" among several other publications, the author was especially qualified in reporting the news. This current work is his most exhaustive account of both foreign and Japanese activities in Yokohama from its early opening in 1858 back to 1789. * During this 21 year Period, history was made, for Japan was now open to the West, and the flow of ship and goods made Japan aware of her backwardness. Printed in Yokohama at the author's private printing office, this work covers the author's personal observations of the arrival of Lord Elgin, Mr. Alcock, Japanese experiences with foreigners, murdered Russians, assassinations of foreigners, the murder of Mr. Henry Heusken, Mr. Oliphant and rebel Satsuma forces, Ohara Mission, account of Choshu forts cannon attacks upon foreign vessels, Sir Harry Parks, life in Yokohama, trade, start of "Japan Times," Chamber of Commerce, &c. * This work also covers "The King of Liu-kiu's own Story. * Perhaps the most comprehensive early resource on Yokohama & foreigners there done during this period. * All editions were identical in this aspect, and the contents are identical. A contemporary insight to Yokohama life. ALWAYS RARE ! * NOTE ON THE PUBLISHER, PRINTING LOCATION OF THIS WORK: On the verso of the title page it states: Vol.1: "Printed at the Private Printing Office of the Author, No.16, Yokohama, Japan." . Vol. 2: "Printed at the "Japan Gazette" Office, no.70, Main Street, Yokohama, Japan." . While the title page states at the bottom, "London, Trubner & Co., Yokohama, Kelly & Co 1880, 1881" this book was only published in Yokohama, but distributed by Trubner in London. The publisher "Kelly" is referring to a later change in that publisher's name to "Kelly & Walsh." . Regardless of the above irregularities, the book was clearly privately printed in Yokohama at John R. Black's office. A very rare and early Yokohama printing in English. *** Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not always be the exact photo of the copy in stock for sale at any given time.       2 vols. London: Macmillan, 1880. 2 vols., 8vo, xvii, 431; ix, 383 pp., with a portrait frontispiece in each volume and numerous illustrations. Original blue cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped designs. A fine copy of this attractive binding with the binder’s ticket “Bound by Burn & Co” at the back. Second and best edition. Of special interest are the original prints - three from the Virgil woodblocks (in this edition printed on India paper and preferable to the prints in the first edition of Gilchrist) and 17 from electrotypes made from the original copperplates of the Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Gilchrist was Blake’s first full-scale biographer and the only biographer who actually met Blake. The work was unfinished when he died and largely completed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti who wrote the final chapter from Gilchrist’s notes, with help from his brother William Michael, and also Swinburne whose own book on Blake was the result of his researches when reviewing Gilchrist’s book.         [two lines in Hebrew, then] Liber psalmorum. Textum masoreticum acuratissime expressit ... notis criticis confirmavit S. Baer. Praefatus est edendi operis adjutor Franciscus Delitzsch.

Lipsiae: Ex officina Bernhardi Tauchnitz 8vo (22.4 cm, 8.8"). [1] f., 82 pp.; manuscript notes bound in.. 1880 This "textum masoreticum" book of psalms, i.e., the traditional Hebrew text, was edited by masoretic scholar Seligman Baer (1825–97) and theologian Franz Delitzsch (1813–90) as part of their Masoretic Bible series, published by Tauchnitz between 1869 and 1895. A truly => unique copy, this particular volume is thickly interleaved with variously sized sheets and tabs containing the fastidious manuscript notes of published author => Walter Robert Betteridge, D.D. (1863–1916), a notable faculty member in the Old Testament Department of the Rochester Theological Seminary who swathed page after page in minute inked marginalia, and added yet more bulk with clippings from related texts — annotated, of course. Among the doctor's publications was an article on "The Accuracy of the Authorized Version of the Old Testament" (1911), including the Hebrew psalms. Provenance: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the seminary library, with institutional bookplate noting this on rear pastedown. Recent black moiré silk, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Ex-library with bookplate on rear pastedown as above, pressure-stamp on title-page, call number in lower margin of second leaf; paper brittle, dust- or sometimes soot-soiled(?) at edges, and prone to chipping. Replete with scholia, this is => a stunning testament to one scholar's study of the O.T.

        The Complete Poker-Player

New York: Dick & Fitzgerald Publishers, 1880. Second edition, later printing. x, [11]-142, [2, catalogue] pp. 12mo. Publisher's green cloth with gilt-stamped title and illustration of hand holding four aces. Some light surface scuffing to front cover, else a fine copy with bright gilt. Second edition, later printing. x, [11]-142, [2, catalogue] pp. 12mo. One of the Earliest Poker Manuals. A fine copy of the second edition of this foundational work on poker. The rare first edition of 1875 - with only one copy located on OCLC - is, along with Winterblossom's The Game of Draw Poker, the earliest published work dedicated solely to poker. Blackbridge attempts to legitimize poker, and gambling and gaming in general, harmonizing it with Christian values and drawing comparisons to generally respected professions that trade in risk, such as that of banker and insurance provider. Beyond the moralizing tone, Blackbridge's work provides a technical and probabilistic discussion of the game, and includes a section on "Probabilities at Draw-Poker" by Dr. Pole. The rules printed in Chapter XIX are adapted from The American Hoyle. A third edition was published by Dick & Fitzgerald in 1884. Jessel 122; Horr 167; All In 13

Shanghai: St. John's College 8vo (25 cm; 10"). One wooden printing block, one page on each side.. 1880 In October of 1935 the distinguished theologian and scholar Y.Y. Tsu of St. John's University in Shanghai sent this wooden block to the Pacific School of Religion as a thank-you for the hospitality the school had shown him during his visiting lectureship at PSR in the Fall of 1931. The printing block is from the 1880 printing of the Book of Common Prayer in Low Wenli, being => the first edition in that dialect, and it contains four pages from the psalter. Dr. Tsu explained in the letter accompanying the block (still present with it) that "since the [adoption] of the use of moveable type years ago, these blocks have been discarded." Griffiths had noted explicitly of the 1880 edition that it was "printed from wooden blocks (kept at St. John's College)."         Terrestrial table globe - Jan Felkl, c. 1880.

SMALL TERRESTRIAL TABLE GLOBE WITH STANLEY"S NEW DISCOVERIES IN THE CONGO"Aardglobe naar de Nieuwste Bronnen bewerkt door W.J. Geerling. Fabriek van J. Felkl. te Praag', small (16 cm) terrestrial globe with 12 gores produced in Prague by Jan Felkl c. 1880. Lithographed in black and two shades of blue, with Asia, Australia, the Americas and parts of Antarctica outlined in red. With a brass meridian ring graduated in degrees and a brass pointer at the north pole (dial lacking), in a contemporary four-legged wooden base with central support, the horizon ring with a facsimile of a contemporary paper horizon ring pasted on it.A charming little globe, produced in Prague for the Dutch market by Jan Felkl (1817-1887) with the assistance of W.J. Geerling of Arnhem. Schools formed a large part of Felkl"s market, though the globes sold to schools are not distinguished from those sold to others. Since Felkl left Prague for Rostok in 1870 and traded as Felkl & Sohn from 1875, the plates for the present globe must have been made no later than 1870. Africa shows the results of Henry Morton Stanley"s exploration of the Congo in the years 1874 to 1877, so the plates must have been updated. It depicts the upper Congo accurately, reduces the old elongated Lake Albert to its proper extent and perhaps attempts to depict what are now lakes Edward and George. The presence of Transvaal Republic in South Africa suggests a date before its annexation by England in 1881.Condition: professional repair of a 1 cm hole in the Atlantic Ocean, east of West Indies, and a few minor scuffs, but still in good condition overall. A nice little globe from the famous firm of Felkl in Prague.Price: € 3.000,-.

[Rossetti, Dante Gabriel- Autograph Letter to Watts, Mentioning Augmentation to one of his most famous poems, "Sister Helen" [Together with] a holograph DGR fragment from the poem.

Fascinating one page letter on folded sheet, ca. 1880, a short but sweet letter to his closest friend in later life and fellow-Pre-Raphaelite, Theodore Watts-Dunton. "Wednesday, My dear Watts, Try & dine with me Saturday or Sunday. Which shall it be? & bring some Sonnets. I've given another Coup de grace to Sister Helen! Yours affec: DG." "Sister Helen," one of Rossetti's most acclaimed poems, was written in 1851 and appeared in his "Poems" (1870), but Rossetti continued to work on the poem for years, including changes, found in holograph, in Rossetti's own copy of a "Tauchnitz" reprint, and finally culminating in a finished revision ca. 1880. He sent some stanzas to Jane Morris, saying, "the tenor of the poem now shows that the witch began her spell on the wedding-morning of her false lover. I cannot think how I never did it before..." The final printed version of the expanded poem appeared in the "New Edition" of the "Poems" (1881). Therefore, mention of these incipient new additions to his friend, Watts, (and dubbing them a "Coup de grace!") to share with his closest friend during dinner, is indeed a delightful and interesting historical moment. [Together with] a HOLOGRAPH FRAGMENT OF THE ORIGINAL POEM ("SISTER HELEN") on 1 x 7" piece of paper: "A lady's here by a dark steed brought/ Sister Helen,/ So darkly clad I saw her not."/ "See her now or never see aught/ Little Brother." And on the verso of this fragment appears more Rossetti holograph lines, crossed out by him, from his "Sonnet LXII, The Soul's Sphere," "Some prisoned moon in steep cloud-fastness/ Blazed with momentous memorable fire." A very nice grouping of Rossetti ALS mentioning "Sister Helen" and holograph poem fragments.

A History of the Birds of Ceylon

London: Self Published, 1880 1237 pages, bound in two volumes. 34 hand-colored plates after J. G. Keulemans and colored map frontispiece. Finely bound in two volumes, half red leather and cloth over boards. Spines with slightly raised spine bands and black leather spine labels. Gilt stamped lettering and decoration. Marbled end leaves. No binder's ticket is noted. There is a very light smudge on bottom board of second volume. Leather shows a few very light scuffs/rubbed spots, though overall covers remain bright, very striking, and near fine. Black and white anatomical plate at frontis of second volume shows a vertical crease about two inches from outside edge. Light to moderate foxing is seen on the first and last few leaves of both volumes, and very light foxing is scattered throughout. Page 115/116 shows a two inch closed tear in the margin with old tape repair. A couple of the plates show very light smudges in white space, and a couple show very slight offsetting to opposite page. Plate XXXI [Gallus Lafayettii], opposite of page 736 shows a little more offsetting, and there is a very small and slight loss of coloring on chest of bird. Plates have been collated and are otherwise complete and in very nice condition. Other that stated, coloring remains bright and vibrant. There are some penciled notations on the newer blank rear end leaves, though contents are otherwise very clean and free of markings. Despite the described faults, this remains a very lovely and complete copy of this scarce title.. First Edition. Half Leather - Hardbound. Very Good-/No Jacket. Illus. by John Gerrard Keulemans. 4to.

NP [Washington DC?], nd [ca. 1880]. Small oval portrait, 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches, in an elaborate Victorian gilt and plaster frame (chipped around the edges), glazed. The portrait of McKibbin is in profile, in full uniform, with grayish-white hair and beard; offered with a photograph, 4 3/8 x 7 5/8 inches (mounted on card stock), picturing the general and his wife in later years, with two other ladies, on a lawn planted with palm trees (backmark: "J.F. McKibbin (1831-1890), a native of Pennsylvania, attended West Point, 1846-1848, but did not graduate; he served in the Mexican War and by 1855 was a 2nd Lieutenant with the 9th U.S. Infantry.

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Album de Pernambuco.

Pernambuco: F. H. Carls,, 1880. Landscape quarto (300 x 420 mm). Original green cloth, title gilt to the front board within a broad black stylised floral panel between two single gilt ruled panels, the black panel repeated on the lower board, edges lightly marbled, floral-pattered endpapers in sepia, the title in German neatly inked in purple in a contemporary hand to the first blank, small bookbinder's ticket of Wilhelm Bitz, Basel, to the lower fore-corner of the front pastedown, dated August 1885 in the same hand. High-finish pictorial chromolithographic calendar for 1880 with Carls' imprint as title page, and 36 coloured lithographic plates. Very light shelf-wear, some marginal browning to the plates, occasional scatter of spotting, overall very good indeed. A wonderfully-preserved copy of this superb visual record of Brazil in the late nineteenth century: "The colourful and airy rendering contributes much to the appeal of this extensive series of images that forms one of the most comprehensive visual reports carried out on any Brazilian city in the period" (Correa do Lago). The album was first issued in 1873 under the title Album de Pernambuco e seus Arrabaldes [Album of Pernambuco and its Environs] with fifty plates, it was subsequently reissued with varying numbers of plates, some copies having as few as 15 to 20, and with the composition rarely repeating. Carls was a German graphic artist, designer, and photographer who joined the wave of German immigration to Brazil, settling in Recife in 1859, and establishing there one of the first lithographic presses in Pernambuco, Casa Litographica. An enterprising and innovative printer he took on a wide range of work, bringing the potential of high quality lithographic printing to advertising material, diplomas, stock certificates, letterheads, and also maps, being the publisher of José Tibúrcio Pereira Magalhães' Cidade do Recife e seus Arrabaldes [the City of Recife and its Environs] in 1870. But it is for the sequence of plates that constitute the present work that he is best known, they comprise an inclusive collection of impressive views of of the region: the public buildings - provincial assembly, presidential palace, the Hospital Pedro II - commercial streets - rua do Imperador, rua 1o de Março - grand private homes - the mansion of Dr. Augusto Frederico de Oliveira, which now houses the state museum, and the seat of the Portguese merchant João José Rodrigues Mendes, Barão Rodrigues Mendes, now the headquarters of the Pernambuco Academy of Letters - theatres, churches - mother churches of San Antonio and Boa Vista - shipping in the harbour, markets, and landscapes of the outlying villages and estates, all teeming with life, showing the signs of the accelerating modernisation of Brazil following independence, "a significant iconographic series for the visual memory of of the country, depicting scenes of everyday life, customs and landscapes" (Silva, p.1567). A collaboration with German-born artist Louis Adam Cornell Krauss, who arrived in Recife in 1877, it has been suggested that the plates incorporate, uncredited, the work of pioneering Brazilian photographers such as João Ferreira Vilela, Alfredo Ducasble, Guilherme Gaensly (Wilhelm Gänsli) and Augusto Stahl. Certainly a number of the views do exhibit a sharpness of detail that hints at the use of photographic reference, and some do bear a close resemblance to images produced by these Brazilian pioneers, for example the view of Recife from the observatory of the Naval Arsenal is very similar to Gaensly's framing of the same subject, and the plate of the Sete de Septembro bridge bears comparison with Vilela's views. When the Pernambucan organising committee for the Berlin South American exhibition of 1866 included one of Carls' albums, they did so in the belief that this would present the German public with an "an idea of the beauty of our city".

Tipped-in on the pastedown of the rear cover is a printed label in English identifying the objects depicted on 12 plates issued in the series [Shosoin gyobutsu]: "The Book containing copies of antiques, stored as treasures in Shosowin, the imperial treasure-house at Nara." The remaining 27 double-page plates includes all or most of the plates issued in the second series: [Ise naigai shinpobu], and additional plates from the third series: [Kosho no bu]. We cannot determine the exact total number of plates originally issued in the last two series, as this copy lacks any additional contents labels in English. Ex-library copy with a small bookplate on the rear free endpaper, else no other markings. One plate is neatly split in half along the center fold, the concertina fold is separated in a few sections along the edges of the plates, darkening to the boards, light scattered soiling, very good. .

The power of movement in plants.

London: John Murray 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.65"). x, 592, 32 (adv.) pp.; illus.. 1880 First edition of Darwin's examination of the mechanisms of motion in flowering plants, a follow-up to his work on climbing plants — based on experiments conducted with the assistance of his son Francis Darwin, and mentioning natural selection as a possible explanation for plants' ability to bend towards or away from environmental stimuli (pp. 569/70). The volume is illustrated with => numerous in-text engravings of circumnutation patterns, plant structures, diurnal and nocturnal leaf positions, tropisms, etc. This is the first issue of the first edition, with two lines of errata on p. x and publisher's advertisements at the back dated 1878. Publisher's textured green cloth, covers framed in blind, spine with gilt-stamped title; faint discoloration to outer edge of front cover and lower outer corner of back cover, tiny spots of insect damage near joints (one carrying through about 60 pp., not touching text). Hinges (inside) tender, as is often seen with this book, with pastedowns and free endpapers showing evidence of past dampness in lower portions, not affecting interior; two leaves with corners lost away from text. Title-page with early inked ownership inscription in upper portion, first text page (only) with pencilled marks of emphasis; pages clean. British bookseller's invoice from 1983 laid in. A pleasing copy.
