New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, 1880. Publisher's printed wrappers. Minor shelf wear, upper spine repaired with tape, rear wrapper similarly repaired. Internally very clean. Very good. Jonathan H. Green, "the reformed gambler," is the most important figure in the early literature of American gambling. A famed gambler in his youth, he was known for his talents from Texas to Boston and all points in between. He abandoned gambling just shy of age thirty, and became an advocate against it, seeking to expose the tricks of the trade. Here he offers the inside scoop on games such as Dog Loo (played on the Red River), Whist, Thimbles (or cups), Poker, and Euchre, and on techniques such as palming, lapping, forcing cards, shuffling, cutting, dealing, stocking the pack, and cogging dice. Many other interesting subjects are also discussed, including horse racing, and nailing a card to a wall by a pistol shot. Green adds numerous tales of personal experience, and the illustrations offer the reader the ability to recognize common sleights of hand. Of course, by offering detailed information on how to recognize gamblers' tricks, Green is also providing an advanced tutorial for the aspiring gambler or cheat. The copyright date on the verso of the titlepage appears to read 1850 (the first year of publication), but the worn type throughout, as well as the other titles advertised as available by Dick and Fitzgerald, indicates that this edition was likely produced around 1880. In any edition, a rare and significant work. TOOLE-STOTT 324.

        A Tramp Abroad

New York: American Publishing Company, 1880. Hardcover. Illustrations by W. Fr. Brown, True Williams, B. Day. 8vo. Original blind-ruled brown cloth with gilt lettering and gilt pictorial stamping. xvi, 631pp, (1p ad). Frontispiece, 328 illustrations. Good plus to very good. Binding a bit edgeworn, with spine faintly sunned and spine gilt rather rubbed; front inner joint starting but expertly, archivally strengthened, thus tight; internally very good, with all pages bright and handsome. A tight and nice first state, first edition, with expected frontispiece caption. This copy bears an unusual presidential connection, hailing from the library of President Ulysses S. Grant's granddaughter, Nellie Grant Cronan (1881-1972), who in turn got it from her father, President Grant's youngest son Jesse R. Grant (1858-1934). Front front flyleaf bears a tiny "Mrs. Jesse R Grant" in black ink at top in what we believe is the handwriting of Elizabeth Chapman Grant (1860-1945) and at top of title page is a large "Mrs J.R. Grant" in blue pencil in what we believe is Jesse R. Grant's handwriting. This remarkable copy comes with a typed letter signed by a direct Grant descendant tipped in outlining this provenance. Unsubstantiated rumors have long circulated that Twain gave one of Grant's children shares in the Webster company to provide financial incentive for a Grant family member to urge the president to choose Webster to publish his autobiography. And while this copy of "A Tramp Abroad" is hardly a smoking gun and doesn't prove this rumor true, it's intriguing to see a Twain title from the library of one of the president's children.

        Autograph Letter Signed ("Iv. Tourguéneff"),

Bougival. Les Frenes, July 22, 1880 - In French to Madame [Caroline] Comanville. Turgenev writes to Flaubert’s niece: „I am entirely at your disposal for anything that concerns Flaubert" [in translation] and on philosophy in Russia. - Turgenev and Flaubert first became friends in the 1860s when both had already attained fame as novelists. Flaubert died in May of 1880 and his niece Caroline was in charge of his affairs. In this capacity, she had asked Turgenev to serve on a committee for erecting a monument to Flaubert. Turgenev's main purport in this letter is to express his willingness to serve. He continued by commenting somewhat pessimistically about intellectual life in Russia, in translation: "I am surprised by your question about philosophy in Russia. I must say that I am terribly little concerned with it. Quite recently two young writers wrote books on the subject, it has been some time since anything similar had been written. And so, one of those writers has become mad—and the other is on the point of becoming so. The religious questions which disturb Russia, these have nothing in common with philosophy or with literature." Published in "Lettres d'Ivan Tourgueneff a Mme Viardot, a Flaubert et a Mme Commanville" in Cosmopolis vol 4, p 163, 1896. See also Flaubert and Turgenev, a Friendship in Letters, 1985.

A California Lake with a Cabin and Mountains

San Francisco: circa 1880. Oil on canvas. 27 x 22 inches. Signed W. Voegtlin lower left. From the Civil War to the turn of the twentieth century a dozen painters won fame as scenic artists in the United States. A number were born and trained in Europe. William Voegtlin, born in Basel, Switzerland, came to New York before the Civil War, won fame as the creator of the fantastic stage world of the first extravaganza, "The Back Crook." He traversed the country supplying sets for theaters in San Francisco, Chicago, St. Louis, and New Orleans, before settling in as scenic artist at the Union Square Theater and later, the Globe Theater in New York. Among the most versatile of artists, he impressed critics with cityscapes ("Pavements of Paris"), natural scenes (the seashore in "Dennison"), high and low style interiors ("Pique"), and historicist scenes (The Salvini-Mary Anderson production of "Romeo and Juliet" painted to Alfred Thompson designs). Upon his death in 1892, Voegtlin's legacy was continued by his son, Arthur, artist at the Madison Square Theater, Born in Germany [actually Switzerland] in 1850. During the 1870s and 1880s Voegtlin was in San Francisco where he painted scenery at the Third Street Opera House. By 1888 he was working in NYC and in 1900 he was in Newark, NJ. Member: Bohemian Club. Exh: SFAA, 1879. Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940"

"C. F. Goertchen / . / Portefeuilles und Galanterie-Arbeiten". - Da Collage überformatig, bitte Portokosten ins Ausland erfragen! [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Japan 1880, no publisher]. Stiff boards, accordion album,. contains 11 double-page woodcut color prints, or 22 smaller. prints, each Chuban page is 21 x 17 cm., rebacked, mismatched. covers, each page is a small dyptich. OBSCURE ITEM !. BEGINNING OF THE MEIJI PERIOD BOOK OF KABUKI & SAMURAI The contents consists of 10 double-illustrations in full woodblock printed color. Some of the pages are slightly mis-aligned, which is normal for a book of this period and nature. * THE ARTIST: Sho-Setsu-Sai Gin-Koh is his real name, and he used his studio name Adachi Ginkoh for this book, he flourished 1874-97. He had several other Go or studio names, see Roberts below for more details. * Each print shares a date cartouche at the top, stating Meiji period, these are diptych type woodcuts, each pair equals a single image or scene from a Kabuki play. The action starts out with a Buddhist priest talking to an itinerant traveler. The next shows two ruffians engaged in conversation. Followed by a man with a stab wound in the belly biting his Kimono to stave off the pain, while two other men look at him. The next shows a man offering a cup of Sake to an Onnagata [woman form, actually acted by a man]. Nest shows a man holding a Kiseru tobacco pipe talking to another man and an Onnagata. Two men are locked in crossed bamboo Kendo swords during sword play and practice. Two samurai look at the same direction, one has drawn his sword in anger. Two Samurai engage in combat, the man on the right trying to avoid being roped while trying to stab his opponent with a short dagger; the other uses a fork-like weapon to jab the other man in the neck while pulling the rope tight. Three Samurai all look to the left, one holds Kiseru pipe, the other two fans. Next shows a central Samurai figure who holds his sword, he looks at a man to his left as does an Onnagata to his right. * DATES: The top of several prints show the dates, which range from 1868-1888, essentially meaning the scenes were from these years. * CONDIDITON: The work is solid having been rebacked at some time. Each of the woodblock prints are laid down on the backing, some show previous old vertical folds, minor corner wear, dusty, old minor stains, but solid and nicely executed in the usual Meiji genre. The album has mismatching covers. The contents consists of 10 double-illustrations in full woodblock printed color. Some of the pages are slightly mis-aligned, which is normal for a book of this period and nature. We tend to be over critical on condition, nevertheless this is a nice work, highly collectable. * A good representation of Meiji type Kabuki/Samurai style plays, with good costumes, period Kimono as well as Western style clothing, typical of that period. The artist's name is on some of the prints along with his cinnabar Hanko or seal. All prints show the names of the actors and whom they portray in the story. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: L. Roberts: DICTIONARY OF JAPANESE ARTISTS, p.32 left colum, states he was an Ukiyo-e printmaker, life unknown, good at Nishiki-e and actors' portraits [as is evidenced by this book], as well as battle scenes. Served as an lillustrator during the Sino-Japanese war, and is highly collected by world museums. * Color scans can be sent by email.         The Photophone

Montreal: Dawson Brothers, 1880. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. First Edition. [385]-448 pages. 8vo. Original light orange printed wrappers. The copy of "A. H. Foord", with his name and street address in pencil at top of front wrapper. Minor soiling and edge chipping to the wrappers. In the Canadian Naturalist, Vol IX, No 7, New Series, Dec. 29th, 1880. The paper is found on pages 397-407, and is the address before the American Association at Boston in August of 1880. Wraps. Here, Alexander Graham Bell explains the genesis of his idea, followed by an extensive history of selenium and the part it played in the the photophone. The photophone used light pulses, and selenium's photoconductivity to convert sound into light pulses, and back again to sound at the other end. Bell credits Taintor with the implementation of the apparatus, which was sent to the Smithsonian in a sealed box. In hindsight, Bell may have anticipated the entire field of fiber optic transmission: "It was evidently necessary, in order to reduce the idea to practice, to devise an apparatus to be operated by the voice of the speaker, by which variations could be produced in a parallel beam of light, corresponding to the variations in the air produced by the voice." (p. 401) In concept, this is exactly what fiber optic transmission equipment does - encoding information on one end, transmitting it, and decoding it at the other. "Even before the work of Hertz, Bell had transmitted speech over a beam of light and was granted a patent in 1880 (US 235496 A ) for a device which he called the 'photophone'. An improvement was worked out in the Boston laboratory of the American Bell Telephone Company in 1897 on which a fundamental patent was issued [which according to Lloyd Espenschied covers for the first time the modulation of radiant energy by a voice current and, in a sense, is the basis for all amplitude modulated radio and carrier telephone systems.] (History Bell System, Engineering, Vol 1, p362) Unfortunately the new device's transmission distance was only tested to 213 meters, and it had the same issues as any line-of-sight signaling technique. In "The City of Light : The Story of Fiber Optics" author Hecht points out that although the discovery was exciting to Bell, the practicalities (weather and radio) doomed it. The concept still spread like wildfire. We offer what is most likely the first Canadian edition, dated December 29, 1880. The first American printing is American Journal of Science", Third series, Vol. XX, No. 118, October 1880, followed closely by an article in the Scientific American, Supplement 246, September 18, 1880. pp. 3921-3923. There is also a French edition (Paris: 1880), and a Leipzig edition in the same year. Foord is most probably "the English palaeontologist and scientific illustrator Arthur Humphreys Foord (1844-1933)" (Geological Society of America). See Hecht, City of Light: The Story of Fiber Optics, pp. 80-82 for a nice discussion of the evolution of fiber optics.

YOUNG JAPAN: Yokohama and Yedo A Narrative of the Settlementand the City from th

Yokohama 1880-81, Trubner. Yellow pictorial cloth, 2 vol.set. 418+522p., very clean, tiny bit wear to spine head/tail, the. contents very clean, solid, very good plus copy, 15 x 24 cm.. FIRST EDITION SCARCE. A MOST IMPORTANT EARLY BRITISH PRIMARY RESOURCE ON JAPAN An important primary source, written by the former editor of the "Japan Herald," the "Japan Gazette," "Far East," "Nisshin Shinjishi" among several other publications, the author was especially qualified in reporting the news. This current work is his most exhaustive account of both foreign and Japanese activities in Yokohama from its early opening in 1858 back to 1789. * During this 21 year Period, history was made, for Japan was now open to the West, and the flow of ship and goods made Japan aware of her backwardness. Printed in Yokohama at the author's private printing office, this work covers the author's personal observations of the arrival of Lord Elgin, Mr. Alcock, Japanese experiences with foreigners, murdered Russians, assassinations of foreigners, the murder of Mr. Henry Heusken, Mr. Oliphant and rebel Satsuma forces, Ohara Mission, account of Choshu forts cannon attacks upon foreign vessels, Sir Harry Parks, life in Yokohama, trade, start of "Japan Times," Chamber of Commerce, &c. * This work also covers "The King of Liu-kiu's own Story. * Perhaps the most comprehensive early resource on Yokohama & foreigners there done during this period. * All editions were identical in this aspect, and the contents are identical. A contemporary insight to Yokohama life. ALWAYS RARE ! * NOTE ON THE PUBLISHER, PRINTING LOCATION OF THIS WORK: On the verso of the title page it states: Vol.1: "Printed at the Private Printing Office of the Author, No.16, Yokohama, Japan." . Vol. 2: "Printed at the "Japan Gazette" Office, no.70, Main Street, Yokohama, Japan." . While the title page states at the bottom, "London, Trubner & Co., Yokohama, Kelly & Co 1880, 1881" this book was only published in Yokohama, but distributed by Trubner in London. The publisher "Kelly" is referring to a later change in that publisher's name to "Kelly & Walsh." . Regardless of the above irregularities, the book was clearly privately printed in Yokohama at John R. Black's office. A very rare and early Yokohama printing in English. *** Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not always be the exact photo of the copy in stock for sale at any given time.         Flock of Gulls on Atlantic Coast.

Great Britain:: Original Watercolor,, [c.1880-1900].. Archivally Framed. Fine/ . Fine original watercolor on rag paper. (25.4 x 17.7 cm). Matted in Rag. Framed in 19th C. gilt beaded moulding. Condition: Fine, with minor aged paper remains to verso corners from previous mount watermarked 1902. Pathos notwithstanding and made all the more alluring by want of attribution, this vivid watercolor scene ( Flock of Gulls on Atlantic Coast) was envisioned and thus executed not by a professional artist, field naturalist or explorer but by an amateur, or armchair, traveler/naturalist /painter. The drama evident yet depiction gentle, this watercolor quite plausibly was painted by a young Victorian gentlewoman who would have learned the art of nature painting, as was the custom, and who would have sought inspiration from the grand natural history color plate volumes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This bold and vivid naturalists' display of a tapestry of dappled foliage or the crystalline translucence of disturbed water or the splendid reticulated plumage is clearly stylized by a primitive eye, yet executed with an accomplished and refined hand; the technique is learned. The resulting composition is one of dramatic charm.

        Monograph of the Pittidae

1880 - GOULD, John. Monograph of the Pittidae. London: by the Author, 1880. Two parts in one, Part I with plates and text, Part II text only, all published. Large folio (15-1/2 by 22-1/2 inches), original half green cloth, original green printed boards. $22,000.First edition of this lovely Gould monograph, with ten beautiful hand-colored plates, in original printed boards as issued. The Pittidae is a family of brilliantly colored and thrush-like insectivorous birds, mostly limited to the subtropical and tropical forests of Asia, Indonesia and Australia. "In the field of natural history the accomplishments of this man [John Gould] are truly monumental. No other ornithologist has ever exceeded (or will ever exceed) the number of Gould's bird discoveries and the magnitude and splendor of his folio publications" (Sauer, John Gould, the Bird Man, xv). "Lithography which introduced a greater freedom of line and softer tones than had hitherto been known was ideally suited as a medium for bird pictures, the finished prints resembling watercolors with the birds set in their natural habitats often amongst plants and flowers. Gould was meticulous about accuracy both in design and coloring" (Nissen, IVB 381). "The 10 hand-colored lithographs are mostly taken from the Birds of Asia, Birds of Australia, and Birds of New Guinea" (Sitwell, 102). Originally projected for completion in four parts, the Pittidae was abandoned after Gould's death. No title page or preliminary letterpress was issued; the title is taken from the front cover. The present copy includes the ten leaves of text written by R.B. Sharpe (each leaf signed "[R.B.S.]") for the uncompleted second part. Zimmer, 263. Fine Bird Books 102. McGill/Wood 365.         The Ghost in The Bank of England.

London James Hogg 1880. 8vo. 63pp. Publisher's polychrome binding in varying shades of blue, green and red.Minor edgewear, scuffed and a trifle discoloured here and there, cloth darkened to rear panel. Internally clean, pencil gift inscription to front pastedown. A trifle thumbmarked here and there one gathering stands slightly proud. Nevertheless a very good copy. The author's first book (although attribution is disputed...well it's disputed in the fact that one eminent gentleman says it's Phillpots, a number of others say it isn't; nobody has another viable option, and seeing as no-one has really seen a copy of it floating around for a while it's likely to remain somewhat mysterious. A fair amount of the Phillpotts attribution seems to be based on the fact that he wrote something else for London Society. The jury is still out, having a really long lunch), a slightly different version appeared in "London Society" Magazine in the 1880's, this is the first edition in book form. Stupidly rare. Six copies found on worldcat, only two in the UK (absent from the BL catalogue), no auction records for the last 50 years or so, one of those strange books that appears in Hubin, and on the occasional list of highly thought of oddities and never sees the light of day. A thoroughly presentable copy. Crazy job this bookselling lark.

A group of nine. colored lithographs extracted from ? book, very good, a bit. of minor foxing, sheet size: 22 x 14 cm., image 17 x 10.5 cm. strong, clear images, "C. Wirgman del t" in lower left. RARE. LOVELY GROUP OF 1880'S COLOR LITHOS OF JAPAN This suite contains the following color print images of Japan, with titles: Odah; From our Inn at Omura; Wayside Inn Near Nagasaki; Sulphur baths Uritzino; Halt by the Wayside near Palhiwa; Scene in a Silk Shop; Village Life in Japan; Japanese Physician; and Shaving the ladies. These last two are in duo-tone not color. * Charles Wirgman was a correspondent for the London Times, in in 1856, from there, he went to Japan as a correspondent for Illustrated London News, arriving there in 1861. He contributed many illustrated articles for that newspaper. In 1862 as a foreign resident of Yokhoama, he began a new publication the "Japan Punch." * JAPAN PUNCH: was published by Wirgman for 25 years, at first irregularly, then monthly from 1874. The newspaper remains a valuable source of information on the Yokohama foreign settlement and politics and social issues of the day. In Yokohama, where Wirgman was something of a native son. The journal eventually quit operation around 1887. "Japan Punch" was loaded with anecdotes and comic charicatures of local foreign residents, articles on Japan and the Japanese, historic events. * JAPAN PUNCH provided a vital eye-witness account of the heady days in Yokohama as Japan encountered the Western world and their culture. The articles will make you laugh, blush and ponder as the characters come alive. Wirgman was one of those engaging, eccentric, polyglot types who adventured around the Far East and had the knack to make great cartoons as well as caustic essays. The Japan Punch was a satire cartoon magazine. * THE BIRTH OF HAND-COLORED PHOTOGRAPHS IN YOKOHAMA: Being an illustrator and painter, Wirgman got a brilliant idea: to hand color photographs of Japan that were popular with foreign visitors in Yokohama. He contacted his old colleague and friend who he worked with in China, Felice Beato. Wirgman worked together writing stories, doing sketches and Beato, photographing in India and China. At the invitation of Wirgman, Beato came to Japan and the pair began a production line of hand-colored photos. Beato photographed Japanese life, while Wirgman began to hand-tint the albumen photographs of native types, scenery and views of Japan. * REFERENCES: JAPAN BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA & WHO'S WHO, p.1840 for more details. Charles Wirgman [ca 1834-1891] sumarizing: Englishman, painter, [& cartoonist], former British Army Officer, sent to Japan during the Meiji Restoration as a special correspondent for The Times, London.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1880 - 1880 Original Paperback Wisden, Tape to Spine.

1880. Hi, This lot is an 1880 Original Paperback Wisden. It has tape to the spine and is in Good Condition for the year. The tape holds the book together well and so is tightly bound but soe weakness at page 96, the tape covers quite a lot of the rear cover. The covers are very dark and grubby and some loss to the rear corner. Inside it is nice. A couple of small nicks and dots but nothing off putting. No restoration other than the tape applied to the spine 17th Edition.
