        The Lepidoptera of Ceylon

      L. Reeve 1880-1887, London - xii, 190, [2]; viii, 162; xv, [1], 578, [2], 215 hand coloured lithographed plates. . HB. 3 vols, 4to, orig. publisher's maroon cloth, gilt titling to spine. An extremely fine and clean set of this work which is seldom offered for sale. Rare. Frederic Moore (1830-1907) was originally an artist associated with the East India Museum. The fine drawings in this work "representing about 350 species, of which about 250 are figured in their various stages of larva, pupa, and imago" were drawn and lithographed by the author after drawings by the Ceylonese artists Geo. & W. de Alwis and others. The collection of drawings was exhibited at a meeting of the Entomological Society of London in 1878, and "was considered to be such a valuable contribution to Eastern Entomology that the following resolution was proposed . It was hoped that an application to the Ceylon Government for their publication would be successful". Moore offered that if this publication were approved, he would offer his services free of charge to edit and prepare descriptions of the various species and incorporate new material, "thus forming as complete a history of the Lepidopterous fauna of Ceylon as was at present possible".         Herbarium - 52 Specimens of Vibrant Alpine Flora

France, 1880. Gèdre, Hautes-Pyrénées, 1880-1882. Herbarium of French botanist Henri Bordère (1825-1889) containing 52 preserved botanical specimens, neatly mounted onto 15 leafs for display in a purpose made volume, each with a typescript caption label to identify the specimen by its scientific name, as well as the month and year collected. Specimens range in size, the smallest spanning approximately 3,5 x 1 cm, and the largest approximately 13 x 11,5 cm. Oblong 8vo. Red cloth boards titled in gilt to front. Bordère's printed label mounted to front endpaper, stating his credentials and location. Volume measures approximately 24,5 x 16 cm. Minor wear to boards at extremities, occasional chip to margins, otherwise in very good condition. Specimens are in excellent condition. Lovely textures and unusually vibrant colours are skillfully preserved and elegantly displayed in this attractive herbarium of alpine specimens. Evidently considered rare at the time, the first sample is an Alchemilla alpina L., luxuriously tactile and shining its brilliant soft golden hue. Other delightful examples include the lovely blue Scilla umbellata (Ramond), the Ficaria ranunculoides (now called the Ficaria verna), a small violet flower called Delphinium peregrinum (poisonous to humans and livestock this is commonly knnown as larkspur), the star-like Astrantia major flower known as great masterwort, an Ononis natrix, a Scilla lilio-hyacinthus, the herbaceous Fumaria officinalis of the poppy family, the intense blue Gentiana acaulis (stemless gentian) found in higher altitudes with its trumpet-shaped flowers, and the Anemone vernalis (synonym Pulsatilla vernalis) better known as the Arctic violet. Indeed precious for this particular herbarium is the sample of Fritillaria pyrenaica, native to the Pyrenees in Spain and France, and featuring bell-shaped pendant flowers with petals in uniquely muted earth-toned colours. Popularly known as Pyrenean fritillary and Pyrenean snake's-head, this species of bulbous flowering plant is from the family Liliaceae. Also interesting is the Gentiana verna, or Spring Gentian, one of the smallest members of its species, yet associated with a number of superstitions. Folklore touted that death would follow if the flower was ever picked. Today some consider it bad luck to bring the gentian into a house, for the individual doing so will be at risk of being struck by lightning. From the mountainous regions of Hautes-Pyrenees in Southwest France, these plants were collected specifically at Gèdre, Gavarnie, Luz, Hèas, Pic de Salettes, Pic blanc, Col de Bué, Barèges, Comeli, Rochers de Ste. Marie, St.-Sauveur and Cirque de Tremouse, some of these locations being in what is now the Pyrénées National Park. The earliest specimen gathered, a Genusta purgans found in the hills of Sainte-Marie-de-Campan in June 1880, is captioned in manuscript in Bordère's hand. The remainder he has captioned with typescript labels. Bordère, a notable and internationally connected nineteenth century botanist, not only collected, identified, and catalogued plants. He taught at the Academy of Science and was an authority on the subject of plants in the Pyrenees mountain range. Foreign botanists frequently sought his expert knowledge, and toured his personal herbarium. Occasionally his guests would return home with a rare plant, a uniquely significant specimen, or even a pristine album such as the present example. It is possible that British botanist Alban Edward Lomax accompanied Bordère when some of these specimens were collected. In July 1881, when some of the plants in the present volume were collected and dated, Lomax was making a journey of botanical observations in the region, and intentionally visited Mr. Bordère at Gèdre. Lomax described his plant collecting sojourn to France, and the visit with Bordère in a paper titled, "A Botanist's Holiday in the Pyrenees" in which he wrote, "Past the Col. d'Aubisque... to Arrens... I got a few rare ones, e.g. Potentilla alchemilloides... At the village of Gedere lives Mons. Bordère, the botanist of the Pyrenees. I paid him a visit and found him surrounded by piles of plants in various stages of drying. He and his son collect... He makes expeditions along the whole length of the chain, and across into Spain; and I can strongly recommend anyone who wishes for a good set of Pyrenean specimens to apply to him." Henri Bordère (1825-1889) was a French botanist, renowned throughout the region for his work, identifying, collecting, and cataloging of plants, collecting mainly in the Pyrenees. He lived in the mountain village of Gèdre and was a professor at the 'Académie des Sciences' there. He corresponded with John Stuart Mill and other great botanists of the day. Borderea Miégev (1866), also known as Dioscoreaceae, is a genus of flowering plants named after him. He was a member of the Botanical Society of France, the Helvetic Society, and other learned groups. He was awarded the distinction of Knight, in the Legion of Honour, the highest French order for military and civil merits, established in 1802 by Napoloon Bonaparte. Bordère's decades of field work resulted in an immense herbarium, which is now held at the National Botanical Conservatory of the Pyrenees and Midi-Pyrenees, in the town of Bagneres-de-Bigorre. Gèdre is renowned for being part of the site with Gavarnie "Pyrénées Mont-Perdu, cirques and canyons countries", World Heritage by UNESCO. Located at 1000m altitude in the Hautes-Pyrenees, rural activity still holds an important place both in everyday life and in the local economy it this traditional mountain village. . Very Good.

Photograph album of Sydney, NSW, New Zealand, Fiji, Victoria.

Ca 1880 - A photographic record of a trip to Fiji, New Zealand, Sydney, the Blue Mountains & Victoria, ca. 1880, by an American, we believe. The nicely designed album of albumen photographs has the photographs mounted in an accordian-style, the album opening in two directions, with the photographs mounted on both sides of the linen coated boards. None of the photographs have photographer's names on the images, and most are hand-captioned, but some have printed captions most likely garnered from a photographer's letterpress. The album begins with photographs by the Dufty brothers in Fiji, with 15 views (8x5 1/4") including a composite photograph British Colonists & Natives in Fiji; Hall in Government House, Lavuka (sic) (wonderful tribal art); Levuka, looking towards the North; a Fiji settlement (native community); cotton plantation; Halfrontes Residence Loma Loma Vanua Balavuk Fiji; "Dakin" Savu Savu Bay, Vauna Levu (2 small Caucasian boys sitting in front of their grass home); The King's Canoe (many Fijians on board); Native Trading Canoes on the Beach Levuka; Looking towards the South Dr. Brower's House; the Common outrigger dug out with sail (2 Caucasian men); taro patch & 4 cartes de visite of a bathing scene, natives, a lawyer Fiji & Wallace Island New Caledonia. There are 8 large New Zealand views (7 1/4 x 5 1/4") and they include New Zealand Scenery No. 1 Harrison's Cove, Milford Sound, With the Government the Steamer Luna, and the yacht Jessie Nichol at anchor; Dart River on Martin's Bay Track; Tooth Peak Mts.;Jollie River Pass; Mt. Blowhard (with 3 children seated in foreground); Kawarau River;Mt. Cook; Naseby, N.Z. (this image is located in the Museum of NZ photographic collection as C.014137, although the title "Naseby in '79" and Burton Bros Dunedin is trimmed off). We were only able to identify one photograph amongst the many displayed on the most excellent digital collection of the Museum of New Zealand photographic collection. The New South Wales & Victoria portion of the trip has 6 large views (8x6") including The Craggs at the Entrance Harbor (sic) of Sydney, Australia. "33" in lower left corner;Mountain scenery in the Interior above Sydney, "43" in lower left corner (2" closed tear)Victorian Views, The Yarra, from the Botanical Gardens Bridge Looking toward Richmond; The Old Cement Works, Schnapper Point; Scene from the North Shore, Sydney Harbour; St. Leonard's Township from the Hill, an oval photograph, possibly by Nicholas Caire? Then follows a collection of 21 photographs of Sydney, most likely by Alexander Brodie. They are stereoscopic view size images measuring 3" square, mounted panoramically. There are 7 of Sydney harbor, Governor's residence; 4 botanical garden scenes, 2 of the Heads, 4 unidentified harbor views; 3 of the Blue Mountains including the Zig Zag. The view of Pyrmont Bridge appears to be the same as one held in the Mitchell Library (Digital Order No. a602005). Nicely bound in a brown cloth album decoratively stamped in black with the gilt title "Card Album" on both the front and back covers, 11 x 8 1/4". Both the photographs and the album are in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Pilgrimage of the Ticonderoga

[San Francisco; Francis, Valentine & Co., 1880], 1880. First edition. OCLC records seven copies; NUC records one not noted in OCLC; not in Hill, Pacific Voyages, or Sabin. Boards well rubbed and soiled; some light smudges and stains in the text; a good copy. Scarce.. 8vo, black cloth spine rebacked, original pictorial boards. A highly irreverent account of the two-year voyage beginning in 1878 of the U.S.S. Ticonderoga to Africa and the Far East, written by its Chief Petty Officer, George L. Allen. The mission was to promote American commercial and diplomatic interests, and the ship called at over 60 ports, including Madeira, Sierra Leone, Monrovia, St. Helena, Cape Town, Bombay, Singapore, Hong Kong and Nagasaki, before returning by way of Honolulu to San Francisco. There the cruise terminated and Allen had his memoirs of the voyage published, evidently for presentation to his fellow shipmates, to whom the volume is dedicated. Following the memoir is a complete list of the ports visited, a description of the ship, and the roster of its officers and crew. On the front free endpaper and title-page is the ownership signature of Oscar W. Clark, who is listed in the roster under ordinary seamen. Among the activities with which the crew entertained their various hosts was the game of baseball; it is noted that games were played for the locals at Nagasaki and Honolulu.

ALS about "Tales of a Wayside Inn"; about "Tales of a Wayside Inn

Cambridge [Mass.], 1880. Very Good. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages (3.75" x 5.5"), matted and framed with an engraved portrait (overall: 13.25" x 10.75"), to an unknown recipient enclosing his penned "list of personages described in 'Tales of a Wayside Inn.'" The second page contains a list of seven characters and their corresponding professions. Probably the most beloved poet in 19th century America, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's charming collection of poems, Tales of a Wayside Inn, has become a classic. Published in 1863, it recounts tales told in the form of poems by a group of remarkable people at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Massachusetts. (It was preserved by Henry Ford and still happily exists.) Originally known as Red Horse Tavern, it was located a few miles from the poet's residence in Cambridge and had been a favorite resort for Harvard-based excursions. It had closed, however, in 1861 after its proprietor had died. Nevertheless, when Longfellow and his publisher, James Fields, visited it the following year, the "rambling, tumble-down building" proved highly evocative. In part, Longfellow wrote this charming collection to overcome depression caused by the death of his beautiful wife-who had accidentally burned to death-and the wounding of his son during the Civil War. Longfellow originally planned to call his poetry collection The Sudbury Tales, but concerned that it sounded too much like Chaucer's, The Canterbury Tales, renamed it Tales of a Wayside Inn, a name he had also been pondering. The narrators of the poem were friends of the author who were then easily recognizable by many readers. One narrator was Ole Bull (1810-80), the celebrated and wealthy Norwegian violinist. Another was Thomas William Parsons (1819-92), a poet and translator of Dante's Inferno. Other characters in Tales of a Wayside Inn were inspired by real people: Luigi Monti (the Sicilian), Daniel Treadwell (the theologian), Thomas William Parsons (the poet), Henry Wales (the student), Isaac Edrehi (the Spanish Jew), and Lyman Howe (the landlord). The prelude for the first part begins: "One Autumn night, in Sudbury town, Across the meadows bare and brown, The windows of the wayside inn Gleamed red with fire-light..." Most of the stories were derived by Longfellow from his wide reading - many of them from the legends of continental Europe, a few from American sources. The best known inclusion is the previously-published poem "Paul Revere's Ride". It also includes "The Saga of King Olaf", a poem which Longfellow started writing as early as 1856, making it the oldest in the collection. The poet translated "The Falcon of Ser Federigo" from Boccaccio's Decameron. The volume was published on November 23, 1863, in a run of 15,000 copies. The New York Times called the book "a pleasant fiction" and an "excellent account." Very popular, a second series was published in 1870, and a third in 1872-1873. The great American poet died less than two years after he penned this informative letter. SIGNED Superlative letter about one of the great poet's more noteworthy literary works. Smoothed folds with some adhesive ghosting from the verso. Matted with an engraved portrait.

        Chinesisches Ahnenportrait. China, um 1880.

1880. Papier, Seide bemalt. 166:100 cm. Die reiche Bildsymbolik (u. a. Eingerollt. Vgl. Noda, Renate. Grab- & Ahnenkult. In: Gold und Jade. Sensationsfunde aus chinesischen Herrschergräbern. Kat. Kunsthalle Leoben, 2007, Kat. Nr. 156f.

[SHAKESPEAREAN STUDY IN RUSSIAN] Shekspir, kritisheskoye issledovaniye ego mysli i ego tvorchestva / Perevod L.D. Chernovoi [i.e. Shakespeare: A Critical Study of his Mind and Art / Translated by L.D. Chernova]

St. Petersburg: Slavyanskaya pechatnya, 1880. [4], XVI, 449, II pp. In quarter leather contemporary binding. Rubbed binding, tears and small losses of the spine, cracks between both pastedown and text block (book is not loose). First Russian translation. The first original edition was published in 1875 in London. It was the first book by Edward Dowden (1843-1913), an Irish critic, biographer and poet, professor of oratory and English literature in Dublin University. The book came out as a result of a course of lectures, and basically launched his scholarly career, and was later translated into German and Russian. Moreover, in 1878 the Royal Irish Academy awarded him the Cunningham gold medal "for his literary writings, especially in the field of Shakespearian criticism." The translator says in her introduction though the translation is made from the first edition here she used author's changes from next three editions. There are even changes which can't be found in the fourth edition but were made after author's request (he consulted the translator via their correspondence). Shakespeare's Romantic cult in the beginning of the 19th century in Russia was prepared by pre-Romantic influence of European literature. Russian authors like Pushkin, Griboedov, Küchelbecker used Shakespeare's example and created their own original national literature impregnated with spirit of nationality. In the end of 19th c. Russian academic Shakespearean studies appeared some of which were recognized worldwide (e.g. Storozhenko works first appeared in 1860s).
