Farming for Pleasure and Profit - Stock Keeping and Cattle Rearing (Dalton McCarthy signed)

London: Chapman & Hall Limited, 193, Piccadilly, 1880. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. First edition, 5 x 8 inches. viii, 194, 24 pp. Green cloth with black and gilt type. Section out of the bottom spine. Insides pages, many uncut or unopened. At head of titlepage: Farming for pleasure and profit. Fourth section. - With a 24-page advertisement for works published by Chapman and Hall. Ownership signature by Dalton McCarthy, 8,8 (18)84 very clear. Book itself is in poor condition however, the provenance and rare signature of one of Canada's most important 19th century lawyers makes this a very special collector's item. D'Alton (Dalton) McCarthy [1836-1898] was a lawyer, farmer, politician, parliamentarian and businessman. He was the leader of the "Orange" or Protestant Irish, and fiercely fought against Irish Catholics as well as the French Catholics. He especially crusaded to crusade abolition of the French language in Manitoba and Ontario schools. He also defended Emily Stowe in the 1879 abortion trial of Emily Stowe. In private life, as well, he had succeeded. Having established a branch office in Toronto in 1876, the following year he founded the legal firm of McCarthy, Hoskin, Plumb, and Creelman, which became one of the most prestigious in Canada. In 1879 he moved his permanent residence to Toronto, but he did not sever his relationship with his constituency. He remained county solicitor, maintained a branch office in Barrie, and argued a number of much-publicized cases that kept him before the public. He had a house in Barrie, a summer home on Kempenfelt Bay, and a large farm, Oakley Park, where, the Montreal Herald later observed, in his character as Cincinnatus he raised thoroughbred cattle, high-stepping horses and preternaturally fat pigs.

The Biblia Naturae is the finest collection of microscopical observations ever produced by one worker ... The book is consulted by naturalists to this day. Some of the figures have never been excelled ..." (Singer). The scarce original edition with Latin and Dutch text printed in double columns. "Despite a scientific career that lasted only a dozen years, Swammerdam was one of the oustanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove still-current Aristotelian notions (which he opposed upon religious grounds) that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis (sudden and complete transformation) and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of microdissection and injection to the point where he could use them on the smallest and most delicate anatomical parts, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs and to demonstrate the gradual development of an insect's adult form throughout all its larval stages. These observations are 'indubitable the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects' (Cole, p. 285). In addition Swammerdam performed valuable investigations of crustaceans, mollusks and frogs, and was the first to prove experimentally that muscles do not increase in bulk when contracted via nerve stimulation. "The 'Biblia naturae', Swammerdam's major work, was published fifty-five years after his death by Hermann Boerhave ... the fifty-three copperplates were prepared under Swammerdam's direction from his own drawings" (Haskell F. Norman Library of Science & Medicine, 2037)

Herbarium of 52 Specimens Vibrant Alpine Flora Compiled by French Botanist Henri Bordère

Gèdre, Hautes-Pyrénées, 1880-1882. Herbarium of French botanist Henri Bordère (1825-1889) containing 52 preserved botanical specimens, neatly mounted onto 15 leafs for display in a purpose made volume, each with a typescript caption label to identify the specimen by its scientific name, as well as the month and year collected. Specimens range in size, the smallest spanning approximately 3,5 x 1 cm, and the largest approximately 13 x 11,5 cm. Oblong 8vo. Red cloth boards titled in gilt to front. Bordère's printed label mounted to front endpaper, stating his credentials and location. Volume measures approximately 24,5 x 16 cm. Lovely textures and unusually vibrant colours are skillfully preserved and elegantly displayed in this attractive herbarium of alpine specimens. Evidently considered rare at the time, the first sample is an Alchemilla alpina L., luxuriously tactile and shining its brilliant soft golden hue. Other delightful examples include the lovely blue Scilla umbellata (Ramond), the Ficaria ranunculoides (now called the Ficaria verna), a small violet flower called Delphinium peregrinum (poisonous to humans and livestock this is commonly knnown as larkspur), the star-like Astrantia major flower known as great masterwort, an Ononis natrix, a Scilla lilio-hyacinthus, the herbaceous Fumaria officinalis of the poppy family, the intense blue Gentiana acaulis (stemless gentian) found in higher altitudes with its trumpet-shaped flowers, and the Anemone vernalis (synonym Pulsatilla vernalis) better known as the Arctic violet. Indeed precious for this particular herbarium is the sample of Fritillaria pyrenaica, native to the Pyrenees in Spain and France, and featuring bell-shaped pendant flowers with petals in uniquely muted earth-toned colours. Popularly known as Pyrenean fritillary and Pyrenean snake's-head, this species of bulbous flowering plant is from the family Liliaceae. Also interesting is the Gentiana verna, or Spring Gentian, one of the smallest members of its species, yet associated with a number of superstitions. Folklore touted that death would follow if the flower was ever picked. Today some consider it bad luck to bring the gentian into a house, for the individual doing so will be at risk of being struck by lightning. From the mountainous regions of Hautes-Pyrenees in Southwest France, these plants were collected specifically at Gèdre, Gavarnie, Luz, Hèas, Pic de Salettes, Pic blanc, Col de Bué, Barèges, Comeli, Rochers de Ste. Marie, St.-Sauveur and Cirque de Tremouse, some of these locations being in what is now the Pyrénées National Park. The earliest specimen gathered, a Genusta purgans found in the hills of Sainte-Marie-de-Campan in June 1880, is captioned in manuscript in Bordère's hand. The remainder he has captioned with typescript labels. Bordère, a notable and internationally connected nineteenth century botanist, not only collected, identified, and catalogued plants. He taught at the Academy of Science and was an authority on the subject of plants in the Pyrenees mountain range. Foreign botanists frequently sought his expert knowledge, and toured his personal herbarium. Occasionally his guests would return home with a rare plant, a uniquely significant specimen, or even a pristine album such as the present example. It is possible that British botanist Alban Edward Lomax accompanied Bordère when some of these specimens were collected. In July 1881, when some of the plants in the present volume were collected and dated, Lomax was making a journey of botanical observations in the region, and intentionally visited Mr. Bordère at Gèdre. Lomax described his plant collecting sojourn to France, and the visit with Bordère in a paper titled, "A Botanist's Holiday in the Pyrenees" in which he wrote, "Past the Col. d'Aubisque... to Arrens... I got a few rare ones, e.g. Potentilla alchemilloides... At the village of Gedere lives Mons. Bordère, the botanist of the Pyrenees. I paid him a visit and found him surrounded by piles of plants in various stages of drying. He and his son collect... He makes expeditions along the whole length of the chain, and across into Spain; and I can strongly recommend anyone who wishes for a good set of Pyrenean specimens to apply to him." Henri Bordère (1825-1889) was a French botanist, renowned throughout the region for his work, identifying, collecting, and cataloging of plants, collecting mainly in the Pyrenees. He lived in the mountain village of Gèdre and was a professor at the 'Académie des Sciences' there. He corresponded with John Stuart Mill and other great botanists of the day. Borderea Miégev (1866), also known as Dioscoreaceae, is a genus of flowering plants named after him. He was a member of the Botanical Society of France, the Helvetic Society, and other learned groups. He was awarded the distinction of Knight, in the Legion of Honour, the highest French order for military and civil merits, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. Bordère's decades of field work resulted in an immense herbarium, which is now held at the National Botanical Conservatory of the Pyrenees and Midi-Pyrenees, in the town of Bagneres-de-Bigorre. Gèdre is renowned for being part of the site with Gavarnie "Pyrénées Mont-Perdu, cirques and canyons countries", World Heritage by UNESCO. Located at 1000m altitude in the Hautes-Pyrenees, rural activity still holds an important place both in everyday life and in the local economy it this traditional mountain village.

(in "Édition clandestine, imprimée à Bruxelles". (in Pia 1332 ; B.N. Enfer, 185). Usures, salissures, taches, dos cassé, déchirures et légers manques de papier à la couverture, report sur la page de titre, brochage fragile.

        Holy Bible

1880 - BIBLE. The Holy Bible". With Explanatory Notes, Practical Obsevations, and Copious Marginal References. By Thomas Scott. Glasgow, Edinburgh and London: William Mackenzie, circa 1880. Two volumes. Folio (11 by 15 inches), contemporary full brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, all edges gilt. $2500.Later edition of Scott's copiously annotated Bible, illustrated with 5 maps and 41 engraved plates, handsomely bound.Although ordained a deacon in 1772, Scott took holy orders more to secure his own comfort than to proclaim Christian doctrine, much of which he did not believe. In the late 1770s, however, a friendship with John Newton (author of the hymn "Amazing Grace") led to the awakening of Scott's sincerely evangelical faith. As he wrote in his memoir The Force of Truth (1779), "Forever blessed be the God of long suffering and mercy, who had patience with such a rebel and blasphemer, such an irreverent trifler with his majesty, and such a presumptuous intruder into his sacred ministry!" With great zeal, Scott renewed his devotion to both his parishioners and his biblical studies. This commentary won him a large reputation (though not large royalties, due to his publisher's debts). "Sir James Stephen does not hesitate to speak of it as "˜the greatest theological performance of our age and country" (DNB). First published in 174 weekly numbers between 1789-92, this edition is embellished with 5 maps and 41 engraved plates, several after paintings by noted biblical painter John Martin (said to have possessed "the genius that to madness nearly is allied" by Art Journal editor S.C. Hall) and a few after photographs by "the most prominent of the early photographers of Egypt and the Holy Land," Francis Frith (McDarrah & McDarrah, 156). Without preliminary gatherings A-E in Volume I; all biblical text present. See Darlow & Moule 952; Herbert 1366. Houfe, 223. Occasional light foxing. About-fine condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Philadelphia, 1880. Index leaf, correctly issued without titlepage, and twenty-nine line etchings on India paper, mounted on stiff larger sheets. Folio. Contemporary cloth-backed leather folder, loose, as issued. Minor edge wear and soiling. Plates excellent, mounts a bit toned with some edge wear. Very good. The second, and earliest obtainable, edition of Volck's famous collection of Civil War etchings, reissuing work that first appeared in the original first and second series issued by subscription between 1861 and 1864. The first edition or series of Civil War etchings by Volck was published under the name, "V. Blada," apparently for subscribers, in a supposed edition of 200 copies, sometime during the middle of the war. That first series was entitled SKETCHES FROM THE CIVIL WAR. It contained thirty etchings and was suppressed because its content bordered on treason. A second series was issued sometime after the first, but before the end of the war, bringing the total number of etchings to forty-five. However, all of these wartime issues are rare to the point of extinction, and none have appeared on the market in modern times. This set is the reissue as described by Howes, generally thought to have been done in the 1880s in only 100 copies. The etchings vary between rather idealized southern scenes, such as Stonewall Jackson leading his men in prayer, to vicious and vitriolic attacks on the North (a white being sacrificed on an altar labeled "Negro Worship"). It is due to the inclusion of images such as the latter one, that it is easy to see why they were deemed treasonable. The sketches are superbly executed and often reproduced in modern histories of the Civil War. George McCullough Anderson, in his book on Volck, states: "The vitriolic nature of some of these drawings leaves no doubt that V. Blada felt strongly and expressed those feelings in the manner he knew best - as a non- combatant seeking to build morale and support for the cause in which he believed. His weapons were his artistic temperament and ability." A rare group of controversial Civil War views, here in a later issue, made from the original plates. Not in Sabin or Coulter. HOWES V138, "aa."         The Lepidoptera of Ceylon

London: L. Reeve, 1880-1887. xii, 190, [2]; viii, 162; xv, [1], 578, [2], 215 hand coloured lithographed plates. . HB. 3 vols, 4to, orig. publisher's maroon cloth, gilt titling to spine. An extremely fine and clean set of this work which is seldom offered for sale.. Rare. Frederic Moore (1830-1907) was originally an artist associated with the East India Museum. The fine drawings in this work "representing about 350 species, of which about 250 are figured in their various stages of larva, pupa, and imago" were drawn and lithographed by the author after drawings by the Ceylonese artists Geo. & W. de Alwis and others. The collection of drawings was exhibited at a meeting of the Entomological Society of London in 1878, and "was considered to be such a valuable contribution to Eastern Entomology that the following resolution was proposed ... It was hoped that an application to the Ceylon Government for their publication would be successful". Moore offered that if this publication were approved, he would offer his services free of charge to edit and prepare descriptions of the various species and incorporate new material, "thus forming as complete a history of the Lepidopterous fauna of Ceylon as was at present possible". Nissen ZBI, 2877..
