HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA with Illustrations Descriptive of Its Scenery, Residences, Fine Blocks, Manufactories, from Original Sketches by Artists of the Highest Ability

Oakland, California: Thompson & West, 1880. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. As an architectural depiction of early Los Angeles County, along with Wilson's comprehensive description of the county's townships, this book has no equal. It has come to be known ever since as simply the Thompson & West. J. Gregg Layne in his Books of the Los Angeles District, describes it as "one of the rarest of that fine early series of California county histories [...] complied from the newspapers of the county from 1854 to 1880, as well as city and county records, and from interviews with many early pioneers." Among the estates and residences depicted is a veritable who's who of notable Angelenos, including those belonging to Mrs. Phineas Banning, Don Manuel Dominguez, J.E. Hollenbeck, H.M. Newhall, John Rowland, and W.H. Workman. Includes a full-page colored rendition of H.H. Lloyd and Co's map of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona and 86 lithographed plates, including two two-panel. 11" x 15"; 192 pp. Original dark brown cloth binding over the original black sheep spine, with gilt titles and decorative blindstamping. Small tears to the extremities of a few pages, with a smudge to the border of the map and the opposing leaf. Ink presentation inscription to the Ebell of Los Angeles from Katherine S. Parker, a longtime member, on the Table of Contents leaf. A short tear to the fore-edge of that leaf has been neatly mended. Two additional mends have been made to the verso of the title page. A pair of unobtrusive Ebell ink stamps appear on the front pastedown. The leather has been archivally refurbished. Light fading along the extremities of the boards; otherwise very good. Dawson Eighty 78; Layne 53.

Calmann Lévy 1880 - - Calmann Lévy, Paris 1880, 15,5x24cm, relié. - Edition originale. ». Exemplaire de la plus intime provenance. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition, one of the 25 numbered copies on laid to the form numbered and justified by the publisher, only large papers. Binding in full maroon, bordeaux, back with five nerves adorned with quadruple gilded cartridges and a listel of morocco green of water, gold date in tail, golden wheels on the headdresses, frame of quadruple gilded nets and a listel of morocco water green on the boards, silk ribbons and countertops moiré green of water, framing of a listel of morocco green of water and a golden net on the guards and the counterplates, covers illustrated by Manuel Orazi and back preserved, all golden slices, case bordered of bordeaux maroquin and boards of paper to the vat, interior of burgundy felt, superb binding in full morocco signed Devauchelle. Contents all 60 pages of photographs in good condition, one page partly detached, pages including endpages front/rear with some foxing ageing to mount. Most images are views of famous places, with just a few of statutes and a few of paintings. , each photograph ( size approx 20 x 26cm, size of each varies very slightly ) is mounted onto thick card/mount, most with basic description at base within photograph. Images include 1002 Arco di Costantino, Roma 4018 B. Arco di Titorol Colossco, Palatino Casa di Tiberio, Piramide de caio cestio, piazza del popolo - dal pincio, castel s angelo dal tevere etc. not dated but we put 1880 to show not a recent publication, images look to be from about 1870 to about 1890. Sadly no photographers names, and looks like not all by same photographer. We have seen a few similar, but some smaller and rarely with so many photographs. With the decorative embossed & gilt title & decoration to front cover, it looks to have been compiled/ produced & purchased in Rome c1880-1890’s, and not sure if unique (customer choosing the photographs) or produced in a limited number, some with just few photo and others with 24, 36, 48 or 60 photo’s. Apologies for flash from camera on any of our images of this item. Size: 27.5 x 38cm. Aprox [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
