A Collection of nearly 500 volumes and more than 250 letters, prints, photographs, memoranda, ephemera, and other objects

Various places, 1880s-1940s More than 750 items, most in original bindings and very good condition. A detailed inventory is available. This enormous collection documents the works, life, and circle of Sigmund Freud, one of the towering figures of the 20th century. Freud was an originator of modern psychology and the father of psychoanalysis. His pioneering clinical techniques continue to exert a profound influence on psychotherapy. His theories of personality, identity, consciousness, the unconscious, sexuality, desire, memory, childhood, conflict, and human behavior have shaped discourse in countless fields for more than a century. "Few figures have had so decisive and fundamental an influence on the course of modern cultural history as Sigmund Freud" (Library of Congress). Freud's ideas and his conception of mankind have profoundly influenced culture, the arts, and science. His theories have provided fertile ground for literary and historical theory. They have inspired novelists and poets, artists and musicians, playwrights and filmmakers. Freud's understanding of the mind and personality continue to shape our views, and his language has entered everyday usage and become part of daily life. Freud's work and legacy remain the subject of intense debate. "The controversy which exists in relation to Freud is more heated and multi-faceted than that relating to virtually any other post-1850 thinker (a possible exception being Darwin)" (IEP). Painstakingly formed over nearly thirty years, the collection fully documents the history, writings, and ideas of Freud and his followers, and their publication and dissemination, making it an invaluable research tool for the study of the 20th century. PLEASE INQUIRE FOR DETAILS.

Pavel Piasetskiy (1843 - 1919) was not only a respected doctor but also talented artist and writer. These versatile abilities ensured his participation in a number of official Russian expeditions to Asia and Middle East. In 1874 he joined a trade expedition to China (1874-75) headed by Colonel Yulian Sosnovskiy that travelled via Ulan Bator, Beijing and Tianjin to Shanghai, then up the Yangtze river and back via Lake Zaysan. This land route (taken for the purposes of exploring overland trade routes) was unusual in western travel to China, which generally took place by sea. The expedition's photographer, Boyarsky, was responsible for the most substantial early western photography of Mongolia. Although lacking the map, this copy represents a great opportunity to acquire a very rare title. ?.?.???????? ??? ??????????????? ? ?????????? 1874-1875 ?.? ? ???????? ????? ? ????????? ? ???? ??????????? ?? ???????? ???????? ??????? ????????, ?????? ??????? ????????????????, ????????????, ????????????? ? ??????????????? ????????? ? ?????????? ?????????? ??? ?????? ????? ???? ? ?????, ??????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ?? 2188 ????? ?????? ??????? ?? ????? ? 1880 ? ? ??????? ???????? ??? ????? ??????? ????????? ????? ?? ????? ?????? ??????? ???????? ??????? ???? ?????????? ?? ??????????? ???? ?????? ??????? ? ??????? ?? ???????         The Pacific Coast Directory for 1880-81 Business names and Address of Merchant, Manufacturers and Professional Men, County, City, State, Territorial Including Calif, Nevada, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, British Columbia {with Late additions]

1880. Thick Octavo. xxxii, 1496p. City, State and Regional Directories are valuable for historical research since they not only give the name, address and occupation but as in this case there are hundreds of display ads which show the basics needed in the new territories versus the growing sophistication of San Francisco. The earliest directories were compiled by newspaper men in their communities, this edition was done by L.M. McKinney who became the most thorough and the most successful of those done in the American West. He notes that here there are over 35,000 names. Listed here are not only the large San Francisco firms and Nevada's large mining operations but the territories such as Arizona which shows the growth with 56 pages of the businesses (including the soon to be ghost town of Harshaw (p. 1482) with its typical list of saloons and general stores. Display ads for Walkers Stage Coach line from Tucson to Tombstone. Tombstone has listed C.S. Fly, the noted photographer, of the famed city as well as John P. Clum, the Apache Agent and Publisher of the Tombstone Epitaph and friend of Wyatt Earp who fled Tombstone after the events of the OK Corral along with a large number of lawyers, liquor dealers, and many more. Montana has towns some of which became ghost towns and it was three years before Great Falls came into being. Besides providing a valuable key to rising and falling populations (particularly due to mining failures), there is here enough to keep the thoughtful historian to fill in the gaps from diaries, letters, ledgers, voting lists, and similar isolated information. The display ads are often full of graphics but only the A.L. Bancroft has sufficient wealth to use a three color ad in the entire directory. Copies often have detached and reattached pages. This copy is in very good condition with minor edge wear and a nice tight binding, spine has been nicely repaired and now housed in a protective mylar cover. The paper is fragile as with all copies but each page has the text complete at all points.

Sunshine and Storm in the East, or cruises to Cyprus and Constantinople.

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., , 1880. Octavo, original brown with red cloth "scroll" onlay, titling and elaborate pictorial design by Doré, in gilt and black to the boards and spine, dark blue surface paper endpapers. Folding coloured track chart before the frontispiece, folding map of Cyprus at the rear, engraved frontispiece and 8 other plates, title-page vignette and numerous woodcuts in the text. A little rubbed overall, slightly damping and short rip at the head of the spine, two small wormholes midway, rear free endpaper slightly creased, foxing front and back, pale toning to the text block, one plate loose, remains very good and not unattractive on the shelf. First edition. Mediterranean cruise of the intrepid "lady traveller", the "first part is an account of a voyage in the western Mediterranean in 1874. The second tells of a voyage in 1878 to Cyprus, the Aegean, and Constantinople" (Toy). This copy inscribed on the half title, "To Mr. Preston with best wishes from the Author, Annie Brassey, [Illegible] November 1883". "The cruises of the Sunbeam may have resembled family picnics rather than voyages of discovery, but Annie Brassey, who inspired and organised them, is not to be denied the status of a true traveller. A poor sailor, never really well at sea, she dared all it could do to her, in order that she might visit the farthest corners of the earth." (ODNB) A heavy book, and an often reread title, this is a reasonably well-preserved copy.

REMARKS OF PRESIDENT HAYES, AT THE CELEBRATION OF GENERAL GARFIELD'S ELECTION, CLEVELAND, OHIO, NOVEMBER 4, 1880

[1880], n.p. 1880 - Printed wraps; 4 pages, the last blank. SIGNED on the top margin of the front page "With Compliments/R. B. Hayes" by the President. Prints Hayes's speech celebrating the election of James Garfield to succeed him as President. "You all remember how four years ago the business of the country for weeks and months was interrupted and almost suspended by the doubts in regard to the result of the election. Possibly the weakest point in our system is that our Constitution does not adequately provide for the ascertainment and determination of the result of a Presidential election when it is close and doubtful and disputed." Don't we know it. A prefatory paragraph explains that "Immediately after the demonstration in the Public Square had come to a close, the torchlight companies and hundreds of citizens marched to the Kennard House and tendered a serenade to President Hayes. Bank Street filled with people and music. At 11.15 o'clock several prominent Republicans appeared on the balcony accompanied by the President." Hayes then went on to sing the praises of his successor, whom he describes as: "A man of broad, liberal, and generous views, he will look over this whole country. Every section of it will be fairly and justly dealt with. He will say to the mistaken men of the South, 'You are to be treated precisely as the citizens of my own State are to be treated. [Applause.] All that we ask of you is that you shall faithfully obey the Constitution.'" Slightly sunned at the top edge, otherwise Fine [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed ("U.S. Grant"), to New Hampshire Governor Nathaniel Head, declining an invitation to visit

New York, 1880. 2 pages. 8vo. Bifolium. Splitting at folds, some blearing to ink of signature. With original envelope. 2 pages. 8vo. Former President Grant writes to Republican Governor Natt Head (1828-1883) of New Hampshire, declining an invitation to visit Concord, citing speaking engagements during the final weeks of the 1880 Presidential campaign: "You may possibly have seen from the papers that I do not visit Vermont as expected; at least for the present. This will prevent my accepting your kind invitation to visit Concord. At the earnest invitation of our friends here I have committed to visit some of the cities in the interior of this state, when political meetings are to be held next week. If I can do any good for the cause I want to do it, though I do not appreciate my services in a political way as some of my friends seem to." Having unsuccesfully sought the nomination for what would have been an unprecedented third presidential term, Grant was stumping instead for Republican candidate James A. Garfield. (The day after this letter is dated, Grant presided over Republican rallies at Stamford, Connecticut and Union City, New Jersey.) Grant's efforts are considered to have been crucial, as Garfield narrowly won New York and ultimately the general election. In turn, Garfield solicited Grant's advice on cabinet members and policy issues upon taking office.
