BERNHARDT, Sarah. CLAIRIN, Georges (illustrates).
G. Charpentier, Paris. [1878]. First edition. Quarto. 94 pages. Period binding of three-quarter green morocco, raised bands, lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Green marbled boards and endpapers. Original wrappers preserved. A short prose sketch, written after a flight in a balloon, this purports to be the personal experience of an old cane chair in the Tuileries, which is where the aforementioned balloon begins its ascents; the chair observes a character suspiciously like the author in one of her theatrical roles. It would be criminal to reveal of the rest of the plot.Slight scuff to upper joint. Very good indeed. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Muybridge, Eadweard
San Francisco: Morse's Gallery, 1878. Three albumen prints (approx. 8 x 3 1⁄2 in.), on original publisher's mounts printed on recto and verso, each a composite image of 6 or 12 photographs. Light wear and soiling, some fading and foxing. Very good condition. Eadweard Muybridge's photographs of horses in motion are icons in the history of photography. This landmark photograph was recently included in 100 Photographs: The Most Influential Images of All Time (2016). Leland Stanford, railroad magnate and owner of the greatest racing stable in the West, engaged Muybridge to undertake pioneering experiments in instantaneous and sequential photography of horses. Stanford was in part motivated by the "unsupported transit" controversy--are there moments when all four of a horse's feet leave the ground while trotting or galloping? On June 15, 1878, Muybridge demonstrated his method using a battery of twelve cameras whose shutters were released by a series of tripwires as the horse raced down the track. Over the next few days Muybridge made six sequences of various horses in motion. "Muybridge's Horse in Motion grids were the most sensational photographs of their day. Contemporaneous accounts describe crowds gathering outside shop windows in which they were displayed" (Prodger in Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography). The six photographs in the series are listed on the mounts: Mahomet cantering, Occident trotting, three views of Abe Edgington trotting, and Sallie Gardner running. Muybridge announces that six "series"--meaning a single print containing a series of photographs … [Click Below for Full Description]

Also: Weimar.
Folio (288 x 351 mm). 192 pp., profusely illustrated throughout, with 48 full-page Woodburytype plates mounted within printed borders on sturdy cardboard, 24 mounted Woodburytype plates in the text, and 2 plates printed in red. Bound in sumptuous red morocco for Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, elaborately giltstamped on spine and both covers. Leading edges gilt, inner dentelle gilt, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A striking collection of 72 woodburytype portraits of great artists and reproductions of their art, with accompanying biographical sketches, issued in undated instalments, then bound for and dedicated to Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt and Sudan from 1863 to 1879. The portraits include famous authors and officers such as Victor Hugo, Thiers, Georges Sand, Sarah Bernhardt, Alexander Dumas fils, Gounod, Daudet, Erckmann-Chatrian, Mac-Mahon, Coppée, Jules Janin, Velpeau etc. - but also Ferdinand de Lesseps, the French engineer whose Suez Canal was constructed and opened under Ismail's khedivate. The photographs are by Mulnier, Nadar, Carjat, Petit, and others, and printed by Goupil. The woodburytype is a photomechanical process capable of reproducing the continuous tones of photography with pigmented gelatin molded to a varying thickness. The speed and economy of woodburytypes, as well as their permanence (unlike traditional photographic processes that were subject to fading), made them a highly practical substitute for albumen silver prints in book publication or other situations where mass production was desirable. - Occasi … [Click Below for Full Description]
