London: Macmillian and Co., 1878. Early Printing. Beautifully illustrated with over 100 engraved images by Randolph Caldecott either on plates or within the text arranged and engraved by J. D. Cooper. Small 8vo, very handsomely bound, probably by Robert Riviere in fine 3/4 crushed red morocco for Charles Lauriat, the spine with raised bands gilt stopped, gilt lettering in two compartments, those remaining with gilt panels incorporating central gilt, tooled devices, top edge gilt. xiv, 165 pp. A very handsome, bright and fine copy, clean and very well preserved. A VERY BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTION OF IRVING'S HOLIDAY MEMORIES ILLUSTRATED BY ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED ILLUSTRATOR'S OF HIS DAY. Randolph Caldecott was acknowledged as a major influence and inspiration by many of the 20th centuries greats, such as Potter, Shepard and Greenaway. His reputation is such that the American Library Associations annual award for outstanding children's book illustrations is named The Caldecott in his honor. Narrated in the first person, it was a series of stories that relate to the author's travels in England. It was also his most successful work. This tale is replete with old English holiday traditions, many of which were already fading into memory during the time of Irving's visit. In the author's opening words, "There is nothing in England that exercises a more delightful spell over my imagination than the lingerings of the holiday customs and rural games of former times." Paul Bert
Imprimerie Emile Martinet. In-4° relié pleine percaline rouge de l'époque, plats conservés, 70 pages. Magnifique exemplaire. 106 notices et références. Bert was born at Auxerre (Yonne). He entered the École polytechnique at Paris with the intention of becoming an engineer; then changing his mind, he studied law; and finally, under the influence of the zoologist, Louis Pierre Gratiolet (1815-1865), he took up physiology, becoming one of Claude Bernard's most brilliant pupils. After graduating at Paris as doctor of medicine in 1863, and doctor of science in 1866, he was appointed professor of physiology successively at Bordeaux (1866) and the Sorbonne (1869). After the "Commune de Paris" (1870) he began to take part in politics as a supporter of Gambetta. In 1874 he was elected to the Assembly, where he sat on the extreme left, and in 1876 to the chamber of deputies. He was one of the most determined enemies of clericalism, and an ardent advocate of "liberating national education from religious sects, while rendering it accessible to every citizen." From 14 November 1881 to 30 January 1882 he was minister of education and worship in Gambetta's short-lived cabinet, and in 1881 he created a great sensation by a lecture on modern Catholicism, delivered in a Paris theatre, in which he poured ridicule on the fables and follies of the chief religious tracts and handbooks that circulated especially in the south of France. Early in 1886 he was appointed resident-general in Annam and Tonkin, and died of dysentery at Hanoi on 11 November of that year. He was more distinguished as a man … [Click Below for Full Description]

First English edition, published simultaneously in Chicago and New York, of Roscher's main work, originally published in German in 1854, which "became perhaps the most widely-read textbook of economics in Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century" (Blaug). "It analysed essentially the same topics as the classical economists - production, distribution and prices. Roscher was already strongly influenced by supply and demand approaches, but still determined the exchange value of a commodity by its cost of production. His theory of rent was Ricardian and his thinking about population development followed Malthusian patterns. Differing from classical textbooks, Roscher supplemented the theoretical analysis with a historical description - the reader finds the history of rent, interest and wages, of population development, of the prices of necessary and luxury commodities, and of … [Click Below for Full Description]
