The Hand-Book to Arizona, Its Resources, History, Towns, Mines, Ruins, and Scenery [with] Map of Arizona Prepared Specially for R. J. Hinton's Hand Book of Arizona Compiled from Official Maps of Military Division of the Pacific Surveyor General's Office

San Francisco: Payot, Upham & Company, 1878. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. pp. 429, ci (Appendix), 43 (ads), in original flexible red pebbled cloth, rebacked with original spine laid down. 4 maps (2 folding) + plates, illustrations in the text. Bookplate of Miss Nannie Clayton (or Baltimore, MD) on front pastedown, and her signature, dated 1888, on the front flyleaf. An important early Arizona promotional work, accompanied by the large lithograph map (24.5" x 34.5"), which was created for the book but issued separately and is now rarely found with it. The map is linen-backed, but has splits at several folds and some substantive losses. It is currently stored flat, shrinkwrapped on acid-free backing board for stability. This was one of the most detailed maps of the Arizona territory of the time, providing up-to-date information about the location of mines and mining roads, mills, furnaces, telegraph lines, indian reservations and pueblos, settlements, forts, and major landmarks. The proposed routes of the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Texas and Pacific Railroad are shown, and an inset details the existing railroad route from Yuma to Sacramento and San Francisco. Howes H-513; Streeter Sale 525 (map).

        Hannibal's Man and Other Tales

The Argus Company, Printers, Albany 1878 - First edition. Octavo. Original beveled edge decorated green cloth. A trifle rubbed, near fine in a good example of the exceptionally rare dustwrapper. The jacket has moderate overall chipping, and has been professionally reinforced internally at the folds but has no other restoration (i.e. paper added). Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell case. Accompanied by a signed note on the stationary of bibliographer and science fiction dealer L.W. Currey loosely inserted: "Regarding Kip's Hannibal's Man (1878), I know of no earlier dust jacket for a science fiction book. L.W. Currey." Mr. Currey also confirmed that he knew of no other jacketed copy of this title. Collects six stories including the title fantasy, several Christmas ghost stories, and the important science fiction novel, "The Secret of Apollonius Septrio," a tale of the evolution of man and the fate of a scientist who discovers a means to prolong human life and suffers a bizarre fate in the far future. According to Barron, *The Guide to Supernatural Fiction* 952: ".one of the most imaginative early science fiction stories of evolution and one-way time travel." *Hannibal's Man* is a fantasy about a couple on vacation in Switzerland who discover a Carthaginian frozen in a glacier; the Carthaginian is revived and visits modern-day Carthage and Rome. He is overly emotional and prone to violence, and wants to buy the man's wife. Eventually, [spoiler alert] the Carthaginian falls into a crevasse and is refrozen. Although considered by some as a fantasy it is referenced in *Bleiler* as a very early "sleeper awakes" story. *Bleiler* 1232, Clareson *Science Fiction in America* 464. An uncommon tile, previously unknown in jacket, and by all evidence the earliest science fiction novel to appear in a dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Cuba], 1878. Chip in upper left corner, not affecting text. Small tears in all edges, several repaired by tape on verso. Good. A rare and fascinating Cuban political broadside calling for an end to armed struggle but a beginning to a "struggle for ideas" at the conclusion of Cuba's "Ten Years' War," the battle for independence from Spain that lasted between 1868 and 1878. The broadside is addressed to the residents of the region around the north-central coast of Cuba, some 150 miles east of Havana. The text of the broadside is signed in print by Gabriel Aguilera y Zayas, Secretary of the Partido Union Constitucional (PUC), one of the two main political parties that developed out of the Ten Years' War. The PUC, which was a conservative pro-Spanish party led by prominent Creoles, sought a measure of local political autonomy while favoring continued Spanish control over Cuba. The text exhorts Cubans to partake in the ideological struggle that would succeed the armed rebellion, and urges them not to fall into lethargy but to continue the battle of ideas against radicals seeking independence from Spanish colonial rule. Due to their ephemeral nature, as well as the climate of the Caribbean, any such Cuban broadsides are scarce. No copies of this broadside are located on OCLC. Important evidence of the political factionalism and the strength of pro-Spanish sentiment in Cuba in the late 19th century. Rare, and possibly unique.

Washington, Pa., 1878. Folio. Contemporary dark brown cloth, gilt-lettered cover, rebacked and recornered in black calf. Several folded maps have minor tears on side, else very good. An impressive atlas for Warren County, Pennsylvania, engraved, lithographed, and printed by Otto Krebs of Pittsburgh. Maps of the several towns and townships in the county are rendered in great detail. The handcolored lithographic plates depict the homes and farms of noteworthy citizens, as well as public buildings and businesses. Of all of the county atlases produced in late 19th-century America (there are many hundreds), only a few had colored plates. It was the custom of the time for salesmen representing the publisher to visit local residents and solicit subscriptions to the project, in return for the depiction of their homes. An informative and finely illustrated work, notable for its colored plates.

The Land of Bolivar. Or, War, Peace, and Adventure in the Republic of Venezuela.

Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, 1878., 1878. First Edition. 2 volumes; 8vo. Finely bound in recent dark green half morocco with gilt titles to spines, marbled boards, top edges gilt. With 60 illustrations, 3 Maps, of which 2 folding, and 4 Plans, Outlines and Charts. Folding map to vol.1 coloured. Errata slip tipped-in to beginning of each volume. Frontispieces with tissue guard. Publisher's original green cloth boards entitled in gold and black bound in at end of each volume. A superb copy of this unusual title. James Mudie Spence, in ... 'The Land of Bolivar, ... describes in full the country, people, and political institutions of the place, besides recounting the author's personal adventures for the eighteen months of his stay... The author considers that the ordinary Englishman is so ignorant of this country that its capital is chiefly known through the advertisements of 'Fry's Caracas Cocoa' and though perhaps this is an exaggeration, still the ground is sufficiently untrodden to make the book welcome to the general reader. Many of us have had vague ideas that the Venezuelans have been constantly engaged in civil wars and revolutions, made worse by horrible cruelties, and that the Government has a habit of running largely into debt, which it afterwards repudiates...'. '...We are furnished with a spirited and enthusiastic sketch of the career of the ' illustrious Liberator Simon Bolivar,' who was a really great man...'. (From a 'New Book' review in The South Australian Register, Adelaide, June 10, 1878).

Booth I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him First Lieutenant in the Seventh Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States...""Charles A. Booth, West Point Class of 1872, served on frontier duty in Montana from 1872-1876. As Second Lieutenant, 7th Infantry, he served in the Sioux Expedition, March 17-October 6, 1876. Col. John Gibbon was in command of the 7th Infantry. In June 1876, Col. John Gibbon led a force, including the 7th Infantry, from the west, while Gen. Alfred Terry and Gen. George A. Custer came from the east. Gibbon, Gen. Crook, and Gen. Terry were to make a coordinated campaign against the Sioux and Cheyenne, but Crook was driven back at the Battle of the Rosebud and Gibbon was not close by when Lt. Col. George A. Custer attacked a very large village on the banks of the Little Bighorn River. The Battle of the Little Bighorn (June 25-26, 1876) resulted in the deaths of Custer and some 261 of his men. Gibbon's approach on June 26th probably saved the lives of the several hundred men under the command of Major Marcus Reno who were still under siege. Col. Gibbon and his men, including Second Lieutenant Booth, had arrived the next day and helped to bury the dead and evacuate the wounded. After the appointment here offered, Booth continued to serve on frontier duty in Utah, Dakota Territory, Colorado, and Wyoming. He later took part in the expedition to Santiago de Cuba in the Spanish-American War (June - August, 1898), after which he was appointed Major of Infantry, 6th Infantry. Promoted to Colonel, 26th Infantry, in 1907, Booth joined the regiment, on duty at Cuartel de España, Manila, Philippine Islands., March 1907 to June 1909."

Autograph Letter, signed("Henry W. Longellow"), in answer to an unidentified recipient, discussing his (Longfellow's) translation of "Las coplas" of the Spanish poet, Jorge Manrique

Cambridge, [Mass.], 1878. 1-1/2 pages, in ink, on a single sheet. 12mo. Fine. 1-1/2 pages, in ink, on a single sheet. 12mo. On His Translation of "Las Coplas" of Jorge Manrique. Longfellow considered the 15th-century Spaniard's poem, "Coplas por la muerte de su padre" to be the "most beautiful Moral poem" in the Spanish language. His translation of it in 1833 became his first book (v. BAL 12054) and in this letter, written nearly a half century later, Longfellow wriites: "...The lines you send me are from a Spaniish poem by Don Jorge Manique, on the death of his father. "If you have at hand a copy of my poems, you will find there a translation of the whole piece under the [/title of "Coplas de Manrique" "The version you have sent me differs somewhat from mine, and I think it is froma Review, of which the writer unknown to me ...".

London. 1878.. 83pp. plus map and fifteen color plates with separate printed caption leaves. Illus. Folio. Publisher's original blue cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and black, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Boards slightly soiled, corners worn. Tiny stamp on titlepage (likely by the publisher), minor marginal thumb-soiling, light dampstain in bottom gutter. Very good. A lavishly illustrated account of the Nares Expedition on the ships Alert and Discovery. Though the expedition was cut short by scurvy, the Alert reached the highest latitude ever reached by ship. Moss was the surgeon aboard the Alert. "Although his Preface disclaims a narrative intent for the book and places his emphasis on pictorial efforts, the book still provides a substantial and engaging account of the Nares expedition (1875-76). He is a quiet observer, noticing the literacy of young Greenlanders, the details of the shipboard rituals, the 'disappointingly limited' open seas within the ice, 'the complicated hieroglyphic savouring of Freemasonry.' He only balks at discussion of scurvy, the curse of the expedition, as 'a subject which it would be altogether improper to enter upon here,' though he does compare the situation towards the end of the expedition to the probable demise of Sir John Franklin's men" - BOOKS ON ICE. ^Rare.       [Various places in Cuba, 1878. Some edge wear and chipping, minor spotting, some toning. Overall, very good. A remarkable collection of documents relating to indentured servitude in 19th-century Cuba. Formal slavery persisted in Cuba until 1886, but from the mid- 19th century it was accompanied by a significant population working in indentured servitude. Cuba's massive sugar industry had consumed huge imports of African slaves in the 18th century. The abolition of the slave trade in 1808, vigorously enforced by the British Navy, meant that a new source of labor was necessary. Indentured servitude filled this gap. Unlike the earlier waves of European immigrants who travelled to the New World as indentured servants, Asia was now the primary source. Between 1848 and 1874, 125,000 Chinese indentured servants arrived in Cuba alone - a figure outstripped only by the number who indentured themselves in California. "Some contemporaries and later historians...have condemned the servitude of the Asians as a thinly disguised revival of slavery. These critics have pointed to a variety of abuses to which the Asians were subjected, both legally - with severe laws governing absenteeism, vagrancy, and insufficient work - and illegally, in the form of harassment by vicious masters. Yet other observers have defended the system as a boon to the Asian workers. Voluntary reindenture at the end of their terms was common among the migrants, suggesting that many Asians judged the system to be beneficial to them" - Drescher. The documents in this collection are all partially- printed government documents, all completed in manuscript, with thirteen counter-signed in Chinese characters. The territories involved range across northern Cuba, from Guanajay to Sagua La Grande, and some places in-between, such as Havana, Cardenas, Matanzas, and Colon. Collectively they document the forms and details of Asian indentured servitude in Cuba, an area deserving of detailed study by students of slavery and servitude in the New World. An interesting collection of documents, providing a glimpse into the culture of slavery and indentured servitude in Cuba during the late 19th century.
