Vogelbilder aus fernen Zonen. Abbildungen und Beschreibungen der Papageien.

      - Kassel, Theodor Fischer, 1878-1883. Folio (34.8 x 26.5 cm). [viii], [viii] pp.; 33 tinted and hand-coloured lithograph plates, each accompanied by one or more leaves of descriptive text. Later half cloth binding with original decorated board mounted on front cover.= An excellent and beautifully illustrated survey of the parrots of the world. Each plate shows a variety of parrot species. The grouping is made logically by family. The text preceding the plates gives an overview of all the world's families and species; the eight pages after the plates contain additions and corrections. Covers with some shelfwear, front hinge strengthened. Some scattered foxing in the text, plates mostly clean, a few with some spotting in the margins, but this book is often found in a bad condition, due to the quality of the paper. Only the last wo plates with a small dampstain in outer right margin. Therefore this is a very good - and much better than average - copy. Rare. Nissen IVB, 767; Wood, p. 532; Zimmer, p. 514.         Map of Western Asia.

London: Edward Stanford,, 1878. Lithographic map coloured in outline, dissected into 18 panels and mounted on linen, opening to 462 x 640 mm, folding into the original pink cloth case with printed yellow paper label to front board as issued, yellow-surface paper advertisement leaves to front board and upper outer panel versos; scale of 1 inch : 100 miles (approx. 1 : 6,336,000). Case slightly sunned and rubbed, the map in excellent condition, clean, bright and fresh. First edition of this detailed map of the Middle East, centred on Iran and including the Persian Gulf and the holy cities of Arabia, and extending to the Caucasus and Central Asia in the north, Anatolia, the Levant and the Red Sea in the west, and Sindh and Afghanistan in the west; rare, with three copies only traced in libraries (British Library, National Library of Scotland, and the University of British Columbia); OCLC traces two copies of a second edition, published in 1885 (Library of Congress and Berkeley). This map contains a number of notable features. The Hajj route to Baghdad is clearly labelled, as are main land routes across the entire region, as well as the Persian Gulf Submarine Telegraph Cable, which was laid in 1864 to connect Karachi and Basra; the extension to Europe was completed in 1865, though the cable was in fact on its way to obsolescence at the time of publication, following the laying of another cable from Aden to Bombay in 1870. The depiction of a dense network of routes criss-crossing northern Arabia reflects the substantial improvements in British knowledge of the region throughout the 19th century. "Because Europeans did not travel them, the old incense trails and the well-worn pilgrimage routes to the Holy Cities?frequently one and the same ?were often neglected [in pre-19th century maps of Arabia]. It was not until the early 19th century that European acquaintance with the Arabian interior became sufficient to allow cartographers to plot these longstanding routes with confidence ? By the mid-19th century, there was an upsurge in the accuracy of map data, as the fruits of scientific enquiry helped provide the missing pieces of the global jigsaw puzzle. In Arabia, much of this progress hinged on the discoveries of other explorers such as Johann Burckhardt, William Palgrave, Richard Burton and Charles Doughty" (Parry, "Mapping Arabia", in Aramco World, online). The findings of these adventures were supplemented increasingly by official surveys, encouraged partly by rivalry between the British, Russian and Ottoman empires, and probably also by the role of the yearly pilgrimage in a series of recent cholera epidemics, which had spread to Europe and North America, and which worsened from 1866, when steam ships took pilgrims from Egypt and India for the first time, this much quicker form of transport accelerating the global spread of disease.

Camp Life and Sport in South Africa: Experiences of Kaffir Warfare with the Cape Mounted Rifles

London: Chapman & Hall, 1878. 1st. Original cloth. 8vo. xiii, 258 pp. 4 color lithographs (including frontispiece with tissue guard). Publisher's green cloth, black ruling and gilt illustration & lettering. A very good copy (light rubbing to extremities & boards; owner name; shelfwear); a nice copy. An informative and lively account of a soldier's experiences in the Eighth (1850-1853) and greatest of the wars between White and Black on the Cape eastern frontier. The author, a Cape Mounted Rifleman, served throughout the hostilities, and writes revealingly of the joys, the hardships and the dangers of campaigning in an ever-troubled border region and of the day-to-day life of a colonial officer. The military reminiscences are enhanced, as H. C. Hummel says in his admirable Foreword, 'by the clarity, detail and humour of Lucas's observations as raconteur, hunter, angler and, above all, naturalist . . . Those who know the Eastern Cape and its historic hinterland will recognise familiar landmarks. (Books of Zimbabwe).

Ein Ausflug nach dem Glaserberge. -- Original Manuskript mit 1 Aquarell und 36 Federzeichnungen.

Magdeburg 1878-1879. Halbleinwand-Einband der Zeit. Gr-4°. 30 x 26 cm -- Aquarelliertes Titelblatt, 37 nn. August 1901 in Zopotlan el grande/Ciudad Guzmán (Mexiko). Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Zwei Gefangene. Novelle. Mit dem Bildnis des Verfassers.

Reclam Jun.,, Leipzig, 1878 - Leipzig, Reclam Jun., o. J. [1878]. 12°. 92 + 4 n.n. + 14 + 2 S. OLd. EA. WG II 64. Mit dem Porträt und der faksimilierten Unterschrift. - [Universal-Bibliothek, Nr. 1000]. - Ebd. etw. berieben, leicht stockfleckig, Gbrsp. - In dem selten Ledereinband, mit Goldkopfschnitt. - Heyse, (1830 - 1914), studierte 1847-51 in Berlin und Bonn klassische Philologie, Romanistik und Kunstgeschichte und wurde 1852 promoviert. Er schloß u.a. Shores of the Polar Sea. A Narrative of the Arctic Expedition of 1875-6.

London: Marcus Ward, 1878. Large Folio (14 x 19.5 in), 83 pages of text on thick, high-quality paper, complete with all 16 chromolithographic colour plates, 1 map and 28 wood engravings in text. Nicely illustrated original full cloth, all edges gilt. Very clean inside, corners bumped, spotting and scuffing to binding (see pictures), otherwise a very good, impressive copy of a rare book on Polar exploration! Edward L. Moss accompanied the North Polar expedition led by Nares, which was sent out for the attainment of the North Pole in 1875. The ships, H.M.S.S. Alert, Discovery and Valorous, left England on 29 May 1875, crossed the Atlantic to Davis Straits and entered the Arctic regions. The latter vessel accompanied the expedition as far as Disco, for the purpose of helping it so far northwards with its heavy stock of three years' provisions and fuel. The expedition provided a wealth of information on Greenland's north-west coast. On extensive sledge journeys, the record northern latitude of 83 20'26'' N was reached. What makes this book particularly interesting are the large and beautiful chromolithographs which show Godhavn Harbour, a musk ox hunt, the Alert in winter quarters, sledging parties, etc.. First Edition. Very Good.

A complete run in 43 total issues of two short-lived French political journals published during the Third Republic, under the editorial direction of H. Bregeot and Alfred Le Petit, respectively, each issue 4 pp., covering topics of politics and government with wit and humor including poetry and short prose pieces, each issue with a colorful political or satirical illustration to the front cover. Lg. 8vo. Boards, original wrpps. bound in. Paris 1878-1879. A radical newspaper called Le Père Duchêne first appeared during the French Revolution, edited by Jacques Hébert. 385 issues were published in total, from September 1790 until eleven days before his death by guillotine in March 1794. The title was reused many times afterwards, most often during revolutionary periods including the July Revolution of 1830, the Revolution of 1848, and the Paris Commune of 1871. Le Père Duchêne was the name of a fictional character representing a man of the people who denounced abuses and injustices. "Sans-culottes" referred to the lower classes in France who wore pantalons, or trousers, instead of the fashionable silk breeches of the upper class, and who were often driven by ideals of social and economic equality and popular democracy.         PRE-REVOLUTIONARY ARCHIVE ON CROQUET]

      - 1. [Croquet. Notebook]. [1870s]. 186 pp. 21x17 cm. Blue cloth with gilt lettering ('Croquet') on the front cover. Handwritten in black and colored pencils on the graph paper. Author's occasional crossings. The notebook consists of paragraphs describing different aspects of croquet: general rules, manual how to set up hoops and play croquet, elements and phases of the game, terms (for example, 'croquet stroke' is called just 'croquet'), points, end of the game, variations, etc. The most interesting part is description of the strikes from scientific point of view. Possible situations are considered as mathematical or geometrical exercises. For example, author derived formulas for oblique croquet strokes. Moreover, on p. 128 author stated that he experimented based on his calculations, and on p. 129 he drew a chart comparing theoretical figures with those he gathered experimentally. Almost every paragraph is provided with schemes depicting disposition of hoops, trajectories of balls movements and variations of their dispositions, etc. Several tables are very thoroughly put together, for example, on p. 126 presented a table of changing the magnitude and direction of the velocity depending on direction of strikes for balls of different resiliency. On p. 161 can be found a graph based on that table to make author's calculations visual. Part of the text and drawings in the notebook are dedicated to billiard (Russian pyramid) which author called 'table croquet'. On p. 70 author made a scheme of a tool for painting balls (and dated it June 12th 1878). 2. [Croquet Pyramid Game. Notebook]. 33 pp. 14x9 cm. Black leather covers. Handwritten in ink on the graph paper with colored drawings. This is the manual to, as written on the first page, croquet pyramid game - an imitation of billiard game. The main goal is to hit as many balls through hoops as possible. Notebook consists of rules, color drawings explaining how to place hoops and balls, how to build pyramids out of 15, 9, 8, 7, 10 et al. balls. 3. [Pencil drawing of the croquet court]. 21x28,5 cm. Paper, pencil. 4. [Manual to playing croquet]. [1868]. [108 pp., 8 ill.] 35x24 cm; 21x13,5 cm. Handwritten pages. Lined paper, ink. Colored drawings. The manual is translated from English «Croquet Tactics». It was originally written by Walter Jones-Whitmore (London, 1868). It was never officially translated and published in Russia. In 1860s croquet came to Russia and instantly it became very popular. This amateur translation is an evidence to that as there was no other source of information how to play it right. 5. [Folder of the rules to playing croquet]. [138 pp.] 35x24 cm. Handwritten pages. Graph paper, pencil, pen. Colored drawings. It starts with special instructions for players, for example, «You shouldn't be apathetic when you hit even if it seems easy. Lack of the attention to easy hits can cause a loss of the game», or «Don't loose your temper, otherwise you probably will loose». Instructions are followed by terminology (not finished) and schemes depicting various game situations. All text is followed with English words and their translations on the right side of pages. Among the usual vocabulary specialcroquet terms can be found. This is possibly all or the most part of amateur translation from English of «The Complete Croquet Player» by James Dunbar Heath (1873). All items in a very good condition. At first croquet in Russia was an entertainment only for aristocrates and became indispensable for posh lifestyle, especially because noble ladies were able to play it. They started to improve homesteads with croquet fields. Elite educational institutions included the sport in their programmes. Russian newspapers were proclaiming there was no place where swell society gathered without croquet courts. A lot of Russian celebrities played croquet: Anna Pavlova, Fyodor Chaliapin, Mendeleev, Mayakovsky, Lenin, Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy and many others. In Yasnaya Polyana everyone in Tolstoy's fami [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        THE EUROPEANS

1878. A Sketch. In Two Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1878. 40 pp Vol I ads dated June 1878. Original bright blue sand-grain cloth decorated in black. First Edition. In this novel James has reversed his common theme of Americans visiting Europe: the lighthearted artist Felix Young, and his sister Eugenia who needs a wealthy husband to replace the German nobleman to whom she is married, arrive in Boston society...~There were three printings, of 250 copies each, in September, October and November 1878. According to Blanck, the third printing is "noted only as a two-volumes-in-one production" -- yet here is a set of that third printing consisting of two separate volumes in the publisher's standard cloth binding. The text has all of the "third (?) printing" points enumerated by Blanck -- such as "peculiar influence!" at I/137/last line, and "his" at II/46/last line.~This set is in very good condition (volumes a bit aslant and spines slightly darkened as usual, minor wear at the extremities, one endpaper cracked with light damage due to bookplate removal). Supino 7.3.0 (citing only two-volumes-in-one); Edel & Laurence A7a; Blanck 10536.

THE CRUISE OF THE ALABAMA] Kreiserstvo Semtera i Alabamy. Per. s angl. Sost. po lichnomu dnevniku i prochim materialam kap. R. Semza i drugikh ofitserov ekipazha [i.e. The Cruise of the Alabama and the Sumter. Translated from English. Compiled from Personal Diary and Other Documents of Captain R. Semmes and Other Crew Officers]

Kom. po ustroistvu dobrovolnogo flota, St. Petersburg 1878 - VIII, 490 pp. 25x18 cm. Later cloth binding. Owner's signature on the last page, very rare light foxing. Otherwise a near fine crispy copy. First edition. Interesting book regarding the influence of American navy on Russian naval system. Raphael Semmes (1809-1877) was a captain of the commerce raider Alabama during the American Civil War. He was later promoted to rear admiral and also served briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate army. This book was compiled from the diary and other documents of captain Semmes. It contains description of events took place during the Civil War. Also it bears a few supplements: Sumter and Alabama's prizes, Alabama's measurements, correspondence about Tuscaloosa and others. It was translated and published in Russian possibly because of its high relevance in Russia at that time. Fleet of the Northern States in the beginning of the war started to block Southern coast and in 1864-1865 southerns had to stop the trade. Southerns couldn't create a strong fleet to compete with Northern so they focused on the struggle for water communications by sending attacking cruisers. One of the first such privateer was CSS Sumter, the merchant steamship purchased by the Confederate Government in April 1861 and captured 18 ships by February 1862. Unable to repair it confederates ordered a new steam boat Alabama. This cruise ship captured 68 Northern ships in two years. In general all Confederate cruisers were able to capture or sink about 200 merchant US ships but it didn't cause much damage to the merchant fleet of the opponent. The effect caused by Confederate cruise privateers was quite big in the world. They were not too fast and had their disadvantages but had its influence on shipbuilders across the world immensely. These ships also had influence on the American expedition of Russian fleet. Two Russian squadrons were situated near American costs during in 1863-64. They were supposed to attack British trading ships in case of the war. But British authorities were very impressed by Russian cruisers in New York and San-Francisco which led to collapse of anti-Russian coalition. American Expedition approved the doctrine of cruisers' war in Russian navy which defined Russian shipbuilding until the beginning of the 20th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
