1878. With Illustrations by Mrs. Hugh Blackburn. London: Virtue & Co., 1878. Original blue cloth decorated in gilt, beveled, all page edges gilt. First Edition. This is the tale of Trollope's round-trip voyage from Scotland to Iceland, via the Færoe Islands, aboard the yacht "Mastiff," belonging to his long-time friend John Burns (later Lord Inverclyde), the chairman of the Cunard shipping line. (The passengers on board the "Mastiff" called themselves "the mastiffs" -- hence the title.) In addition to a colored lithograph map, there are two actual 1878 photographs (silver prints) -- one of the ship anchored at Reykavik, and the other of the "mastiffs" (including Trollope) astride Icelandic horses.~In addition there are many pencil-drawing illustrations by fellow passenger Mrs. Hugh Blackburn (who, in her memoir of the voyage, described Trollope as "a rough-spoken good sort of fellow; one wondered how he came to write such good novels"). According to the text Trollope found the Icelandic countryside "curious but not beautiful," and Reykavik "a dear little town, pervaded by a flavour of fish."~This was Trollope's last so-called "travel book" -- and is his most unusual one, being of such a large format (measuring 11 3/8" x 8 7/8"). It was "never formally published" and "not issued for sale" [Sadleir]; the book was actually privately printed for Burns.~This is in near-fine condition, with the cover gilt still bright (minor wear at the ends of the spine). This is a Trollope title that we seldom see. Sadleir (Trollope) 51. Housed in a felt-lined cloth clamshell case with leather label.

Catalogue illustré des Livres Précieux, Manuscrits et Imprimés, faisant Partie de la Bibliothèque de M. Ambroise Firmin-Didot..

[Compiled by G. Pawlowski]. 195 plates & facsimiles (some in color & some double-page). Six vols. Large thick 4to, cont. green half-morocco & marbled boards, t.e.g., other edges uncut. Paris: 1878-79-81-82-83-84. A magnificent set in matching bindings of the rare illustrated issue, limited to 500 numbered sets and printed on special and large paper, of one of the most magnificent collections of early French books, manuscripts, and fine bindings ever assembled. This is the only issue to contain the very fine reproductions in lithography, photogravure, and chromolithography, of illuminated MSS. and bindings. The Firmin-Didot sale marked the apotheosis of "classical" French bibliophily; it was the finest collection formed, and eventually dispersed, in 19th-century France. This set, "no. 60" was reserved for F.S. Ellis, the London bookseller, most likely for his greatest client, Sir Thomas Brooke (with his bookplate in the first five volumes). It was Brooke, of course, who owned the celebrated Pillone library. This set comes from the library of A.R.A. Hobson and, I believe, his father, G.D. Hobson. Laid-in are a number of rubbings of bindings and the occasional note concerning the whereabouts of various books from the library. A really fine and handsome set. Volumes 1, 2, and 5 have been ruled in red with prices in a contemporary hand. The final volume is numbered "197.".

        Why Work Is Scarce

1878 - GEORGE, Henry. Why Work Is Scarce, Wages Low, and Labor Restless. [San Francisco]: The California Tax Reform League, 1878. Octavo, 16-page pamphlet in printed self-wrappers, re-stitched at an early date. Housed in custom cloth clamshell box. $1600.First edition of the text of this lecture delivered by George in the Metropolitan Temple, San Francisco, on March 26, 1878.One of George's few separate publications prior to his immensely influential landmark work, Progress and Poverty, which appeared in 1879 shortly after this speech was delivered. Addressing the causes of poverty and class conflict""the central theme of Progress and Poverty""George here calls for a confiscatory tax on land in order to maintain the American traditions of cheap land and entrepreneurial freedom. Though his analysis was scorned by trained economists like Alfred Marshall, Karl Marx, and George B. Dixwell, it proved extremely popular with the American public. Reformers such as the California Tax Reform League, who sponsored this speech, propelled George to the head of the Single Tax Movement opposed to monopolism and socialism. In 1886 George narrowly lost the mayoral election of New York City (but finished far ahead of Theodore Roosevelt). Tiny stain to front wrapper, otherwise a fragile piece in exceptionally good condition. Scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Montana, 1878. Nineteen sepia-toned photographs, housed in plastic sleeves and stored in a three-ring binder. Almost all 5 x 7 inches. Three photographs separated into pieces, some somewhat faded. Else good. A group of photographs of the Bigfork and Flathead Lake area of Montana, from the collection of U.S. Army officer Lieut. Morris C. Foote. Highlights include an image of Kootenai Indians near Dayton Creek, located on the west side of Flathead Lake, as well as multiple views of camp scenes in which several men are gathered together, including images of a surveying party and images of hunters armed with their rifles. The two images featuring the surveying party could very well emanate from Foote's scouting expedition in the Black Hills in 1878, while his unit was assisting in building telegraph lines in South Dakota. A view of what appears to be a train accident, a ship in harbor, and landscape photographs are also included. Images from this area of the West during this period are rare.

DOSTOEVSKY ON NEKRASOV] Na pamyat' o Nikolae Alekseeviche Nekrasove [i.e. In memory of Nikolay Alekseevich Nekrasov]

F.S. Suchinsky, St. Petersburg 1878 - 147, III pp. 8vo. Frontispiece is a drawing from a photo of Nekrasov on his deathbed by William Carrick. Contemporary quarter-leather. Good condition. Spine leather restored. Rare. A volume of stories collected to commemorate the death of the Russian classic poet, N. A. Nekrasov (1821-1877) printed immediately after his passing in a limited number of copies. In this collection different contemporary writers shared stories about him. The most well-known figure among them is Dostoevsky (1821-1881) who wrote three of the stories. Others include Polonsky, Arseniev, Palmin etc. The profit from the sale of the book was used to fund the Nekrasov Scholarship for students of St Petersburg University. The drawing at the front of the book is a rare picture of Nekrasov made by I. Mikhailov from a photograph that William Carrick took just days before Nekrasov's death. William Carrick (1827-1878) was an artist and photographer from Edinburgh, Scotland, who spent most of his life in Russia. He had a photographic studio in the center of St Petersburg. He was associated with the finest Russian artists of the time: Zichy, Ge, Kramskoy and Vasnetsov, who hired him to take photographs of their works and to make prints. His son, Valery, became one of the most successful children's writers in pre-revolutionary Russia. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

St. Petersburg: Kom. po ustroistvu dobrovolnogo flota, 1878. VIII, 490 pp. 25x18 cm. Later cloth binding. Owner's signature on the last page, very rare light foxing. Otherwise a near fine crispy copy. First edition. Interesting book regarding the influence of American navy on Russian naval system. Raphael Semmes (1809-1877) was a captain of the commerce raider Alabama during the American Civil War. He was later promoted to rear admiral and also served briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate army. This book was compiled from the diary and other documents of captain Semmes. It contains description of events took place during the Civil War. Also it bears a few supplements: Sumter and Alabama's prizes, Alabama's measurements, correspondence about Tuscaloosa and others. It was translated and published in Russian possibly because of its high relevance in Russia at that time. Fleet of the Northern States in the beginning of the war started to block Southern coast and in 1864-1865 southerns had to stop the trade. Southerns couldn't create a strong fleet to compete with Northern so they focused on the struggle for water communications by sending attacking cruisers. One of the first such privateer was CSS Sumter, the merchant steamship purchased by the Confederate Government in April 1861 and captured 18 ships by February 1862. Unable to repair it confederates ordered a new steam boat Alabama. This cruise ship captured 68 Northern ships in two years. In general all Confederate cruisers were able to capture or sink about 200 merchant US ships but it didn't cause much damage to the merchant fleet of the opponent. The effect caused by Confederate cruise privateers was quite big in the world. They were not too fast and had their disadvantages but had its influence on shipbuilders across the world immensely. These ships also had influence on the American expedition of Russian fleet. Two Russian squadrons were situated near American costs during in 1863-64. They were supposed to attack British trading ships in case of the war. But British authorities were very impressed by Russian cruisers in New York and San-Francisco which led to collapse of anti-Russian coalition. American Expedition approved the doctrine of cruisers' war in Russian navy which defined Russian shipbuilding until the beginning of the 20th century.

Hi, This lot is an Original 1878 Wisden Paperback with facsimile spine, The last of the rarer first 15 books. This is in Very Good condition, for the year. The covers are original and less faded than most 1878 which all have a sheen to them (same as in '79) there is a line across the front cover from the top left corner to a third of the way down from the right hand side. It has a couple of light marks too, the rear cover (Oxford vs Cambridge which is incorrect in many facsimiles) is in very good condition. Internally very nice indeed, a small amount of foxing to the odd page and red speckles to the page block. A very nice first 15 Wisden.
