Through the Dark Continent, or the Sources of the Nile Around the Great Lakes of Equatorial Africa and Down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean

Harper & Brothers (1878), New York - With 10 maps and 150 woodcuts. Two volumes: xiv, 522; ix, 566, with a pocket in the back of each volume with a folding map. Stanley's own account of his 999-day brutal trek across the unknown reaches of Africa. Several hundred men, mostly Africans, died during the expedition. According to an early review: 'If [Stanley's] book . shows that he has not yet succeeded in revealing the grand secret of the Nile sources, it goes to prove that he has at least contributed largely towards narrowing the problem down to comparatively circumscribed limits, and added many striking facts to the common stock of geographical knowledge. By the aid of the camera he has enriched his book with a number of interesting pictures, which are particularly valuable because of their being faithful illustrations of the beautiful scenery of Central Africa, and of the manners prevailing among her savage tribes. The itineraries of his arduous travels, and his copious maps of the great African lakes and rivers, will be especially acceptable to those who are interested in diffusing the light of modern civilization over the broad extent of the 'Dark Continent.''?International Review, 1878. While Stanley's journey was sponsored by two newspapers, one American and one English, the British edition of this work appeared first, in May 1878. This American first edition was available in late August. First American edition. Near fine hardcover copies; no dust jackets, as issued. Some wear to the extremeties with a bit of fraying at the corners. Pocket maps have a few closed tears at the folds, else near fine. Volume 2 spine slightly concave. Previous seller's small stickers on endpapers indicating a 2-volume set. A large, heavy set. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A lovely, fine set in original brown cloth with pictorial gilt. Borba de Moraes I, 92: "Captain Palm, a Swedish officer and protege of his King, succeeded in interesting the Brazilian government and the Baron of Maua in a railroad plan which would cross South America at about Parana from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Sixteen engineers, divided into four groups, carried out the preliminary surveys from 1870 to 1872. Bigg-Wither, as chief of one of the groups of engineers, explored the Ivai Valley. The book he left, written in a fluid and picturesque style, is of great interest and full of excellent observations about the region of colonies and the 'sertao' of Parana. It is certainly one of the best travel books concerning that part of Brazil.

Original Signed Letter and Photograph - Ambassador to Constantinople

Original letter penned and signed by Layard after the Bulgarian uprising in the Balkans. ALS measures approximately 7 inches x 9 inches, dated February 23, 1878, while he was HBM Ambassador in Constantinople. The letter provides a reference for a James Long, MA who was a humanitarian. Long was about to go to Bazandjik on the Danube in Bulgaria which had recently been occupied by the Russians during the Russo-Turkish War. Together with the letter is an original portrait photograph of Layard measuring approximately 8 inches x 10 inches as well as a contemporary bigraphical sketch from the 1880's. Letters from Layard while abroad are rare. Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894), was a British traveller, archaeologist, cuneiformist, art historian, draughtsman, collector, author, politician and diplomat, best known as the excavator of Nimrud. Between 1842 and 1851 he explored and excavated in Mesopotamia, especially at Nineveh. In the period from 1852 to 1869 he held various government positions, including those of under secretary of foreign affairs and chief commissioner of works. Later he was minister to Spain (1869-77) and ambassador to Constantinople (1877-80). His fine collections are in the Assyrian section of the British Museum. Among his books are "Discoveries in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon" (1853) and his autobiography (1903).

"Unquestionably the most prominent and best known of American [economic] writers" (F.W. Tausig, quoted in DAB X:343-44). Bookplate.Interior quite nice, only minor rubbing and soiling to cloth.         Vintage photograph of Shigeru Yoshida in his Kimono. In his role as first secretary at the embassy in London in the year 1921. The photograph was taken atthe famous Daimaru Store in Kyoto but signed and dated by Shigeru Yoshida in London in 1921. From the collection of British Colonial Official Sir Harry Luke, the photograph comes with the original envelope and is addressed to Harry Luke's father: J.H.Luke, St.James Club, London, England.

Original, Vintage Photograph mounted on original, cardboard. 9,5 cm (wide) x 13,7 cm (high)/mounted on blindstamped cardboard 14,5 x 22,5 cm. Excellent, MINT condition of the photograph, the envelope with some staining. Extremely scarce and wonderful portrait. Shigeru Yoshida (22 September 1878 20 October 1967) was a Japanese diplomat and politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan from 1946 to 1947 and from 1948 to 1954. Yoshida was born in Yokosuka near Tokyo and educated at Tokyo Imperial University. He entered Japan's diplomatic corps in 1906 just after Japan's victory against Russia in the Russo-Japanese War. He was Japan's ambassador to Italy and the United Kingdom during the 1930s and finally retired from his last appointment as ambassador to London in 1938. Throughout the 1930s and before the war ended in the 1940s, Yoshida continued to participate in Japan's imperialist movement in early 1945 he was the Munitions Minister, and attempted to construct underground armament-manufacturing facilities to protect them from aerial bombing. After several months' imprisonment in 1945, he became one of Japan's key postwar leaders. Yoshida became the 45th prime minister on 22 May 1946. His pro-American and pro-British ideals and his knowledge of Western societies, gained through education and political work abroad are what made him the perfect candidate in the eyes of the postwar Allied occupation. He is de facto the last prime minister of the Empire of Japan, before it was abolished following the signing of the constitution. (Wikipedia)

In the Time of Constantine - Alma-Tadema, 1878.

Prijs: € 575,- (incl. lijst) .

        The Return of The Native

London: Smith, Elder and Co. 1878 - Three volumes. First edition, first printing, in Purdy's first state binding. Original publisher's brown cloth, decorated in black and blind, lettered in gilt, cream endpapers. About very good, with replaced endpapers (original flyleaves pasted as endpapers) and some discreet repairs to the cloth spines in Vols. I & II, spines cracked and holding inside the covers, wear and some red residue to the endpapers, rubbing to the extremities, former owner's inscriptions to the front endpapers, a few faint spots to the page edges, else bright and clean. Housed in a custom quarter sheep slipcase with matching chemises. Purdy pp. 24-27. The Return of the Native is Hardy's sixth novel and one of his most popular works. Set on the fictional English moor called Egdon Heath, this novel tells the story of Clym Yeobright, the "native" who has returned to his rural home after living a more cosmopolitan life in Paris. Notably, both the conflicts in Clem's relationship with his Eustacia and his cousin's Tomasin's tumultuous relationship with her husband Damon serve as allegories for the dichotomy between the calming power of pastoral tradition and the unsettling manner of urban novelty. I send the new edition. Your objection to choosing a doublet at random, as "disheartening", must be set against that raised by the Guilford party, that to make out Chains made up from you robbed the game of all interest, & that the only ones they cared to try were words chosen at random. From my experience I should say the chance of an impossible doublet is, with words of 3 letters, next to nothing, 4 letters, 1/100, 5 letters, 1 / 20. Yrs Afft CLD"

Life and education of Laura Dewey Bridgman, tne deaf, dumb and blind girl

Boston: New England Publishing Co., 1878. [Bridgman, Laura Dewey Lynn (1829-89).] Lamson, Mary Swift. Life and education of Laura Dewey Bridgman, the deaf, dumb and blind girl. xl, 373pp. Frontispiece portrait, plate, 3 folding facsimile leaves of Bridgman’s writing. Boston: New England Publishing Company, 1878. 192 x 122 mm. Original cloth stamped in gilt and black, light wear to extremities, front hinge barely cracked. Light toning but very good. Leaf with pencil signature “Laura D. Bridgman,” presumably in her hand, laid in. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Lamson on the flyleaf: “To my pastor, with grateful remembrances, M. S. Lamson.” Leaf with pencil signature “Laura D. Bridgman,” presumably in Bridgman’s hand, laid in. First Edition. Laura Bridgman, left blind and deaf at the age of two after a bout of scarlet fever, was the first person with deafblindness to learn verbal language, fifty years before the more famous Helen Keller. At that time deafblind people like Bridgman were considered to be feeble-minded, but Samuel Howe, the director of the Perkins Institute for the Blind, was convinced of Bridgman’s intelligence and persuaded her family to send her to his school. Shortly before her eighth birthday Bridgman was enrolled at the Perkins Institute, where Howe succeeded in teaching her how to communicate in English both by tactile sign language and by means of a writing board. During her adolescence Bridgman became famous, attracting the attention of celebrities such as Charles Dickens, who devoted nearly an entire chapter of his American Notes to the “sightless, earless, voiceless child” he had visited in 1842 during his first American tour (Dickens’ account later inspired Helen Keller’s mother to hire Perkins graduate Annie Sullivan to teach her own deafblind daughter). After reaching adulthood Bridgman fell back into obscurity, spending most of her life at the Perkins Institute where she died at the age of 59. Mary Lamson, the author of this biography, was a teacher at the Perkins Institute who spent three years as Bridgman’s special instructor. We are offering an inscribed presentation copy of her work, with an example of Bridgman’s signature done with the aid of her writing board (presumably by Bridgman herself) laid in. 7745.

Report of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce for the Year 1876-77.

Bombay: Bombay Gazette Steam Press,, 1878. Presented to the annual general meeting held on the 30th October 1877. Octavo ( 206 x 127 mm). Contemporary red hard-grain morocco over bevelled boards, richly gilt spine, black label, decorative gilt roll tool border on sides, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Minor rubbing at extremities, closed-tear to one leaf (pp. 67-68) with an old but neat repair. A particularly handsome copy. First and only edition, decidedly scarce: no copies cited in either Copac or OCLC. This attractive copy has an excellent provenance: bearing, on the front cover, the gilt arms and motto ("crux mihi grata quies" - "the cross gives me welcome rest") of the Adam family. This is almost certainly from the library of Sir Frank Forbes Adam, first baronet, (1846-1926), who had a distinguished career in Indian commerce and was President of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce 1884-88. Riddick gives a potted biography of his Indian career: "[born] in Stirlingshire... 1872 went to India and entered firm of Graham & Co., Bombay... 1884-90 selected Member, Bombay Legislative Council; for a period was Member, Bombay Port Trust". A comprehensive report dating from a fascinating point in Anglo-Indian relations: Victoria became Empress of India on 1 May 1876 and the Second Anglo-Afghan War began in November 1878; it was also the period of the terrible Southern India famine of 1876-78 (covered in the current work under the heading "Financial measure to be adopted providing for the famine expenditure"). Other subjects covered include the newly opened Rajputana-Malwa railway ("Western Rajpootana Railway"), the fall in the price of silver, the Opium Bill of 1876, the trade in silk and cotton, "expediency of substituting cocoanut for colza oil for lighthouses in India", commercial fishing in the harbour of Bombay, and the shipment of grain.

        The Original Ferntree Gully Hotel

Single Rare Photograph of the Original Ferntree Gully Hotel, constructed circa 1871, Operating under Thomas Grimwood. Large format sepia photograph measures approximately 23,5 cm x 14 cm. Period views of the original Ferntree Gully Hotel are extremely rare, whether a photograph or even a drawing. The Fern Tree Gully Hotel was owned by English carpenter Thomas Samuel Grimwood (1824-1895) who was born in Tunstall, Suffolk, England, and who emigrated to Australia in 1854, becoming a pioneer settler of Ferntree Gully. Grimwood also made noteworthy contributions to Melbourne as an early builder and hotelier, having carried out several construction works for the government, building the first battery and mounting the first gun at Emerald Hill, for example. He also leased numerous hotels including the Victoria, the Collingwood, and others. At the Thistle Hotel on Elizabeth Street he catered a meal for 25,000 on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh during his tour of Australia in 1867. About 1875, Grimwood took interest in Fern Tree Gully, that year leasing the Fern Tree Gully Hotel which had been erected by Edmund Ashley around 1871-72. Nestled in the Dandenong Ranges, then some 40 kilometres east of Melbourne, Grimwood had a grand vision for the quaint hotel and lush property, that it would be the centre of recreation and community activities, the hub of Fern Tree Gully social life, and indeed it became so, from 1875 over 30 years, as he himself also began creating such activities. He set about establishing, for example, a cricket team in October 1885, calling it the Glenfern Cricket Club, and subsequently became a most influential contributor to cricket in the area. The hotel was photographed by a foreign visitor and thus appeared in the London Illustrated News in the 1870s. Grimwood's second wife continued to operate the hotel for a short time after his death, until 1896, when a Mr. Cocks took over, as was described in the private diary of Melbourne artist and photographer Charles Hammond who stayed at the hotel for an entire year in 1896. Hammond also made paintings of the hotel and its beautiful surroundings in 1896. [This building was later found to be erected encroaching onto the main road, and eventually was replaced by what is now the Middle Fern Tree Gully Hotel.] The hotel's origins are connected to the locally famed 'Dickson's Beer Shanty' which was a simple slab shack with a shingle roof built on the banks of a creek in 1857. Edmund Ashley purchased the building and two acres of land from George Dickson at the cost of £22 in 1870. On this property, shortly thereafter he erected the Fern Tree Gully Hotel, which he leased to Grimwood in 1875. This rare photograph shows the predecessor to the hotel at the same location today, 1130 Burwood Hwy in Ferntree Gully, being the 'Middle Ferntree Gully Hotel', with a function room named 'The Shanty' after its origins. Possibly capturing a special event organized or hosted by Grimwood, one man in the leading carriage is holding a large camera, while men in formal attire are lined up on the front veranda. Ferntree Gully is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, situated at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, and established in 1880. Originally the summer hunting grounds of the Wurundjeri people, the first European to visit the area was botanist Daniel Bunce in 1839. A number of timber-splitters established camps in the forest in the 1850s, and a paling shack was built by a Mr. Dickson in 1867. Smaller landowners also began to select land here in the 1860s. The picturesque scenery and lush flora started attracting visitors from the 1870s. Access to Fern Tree Gully was not easy however. By coach or horseback along a rough track from Oakleigh one could reach the tiny settlement of Upper Fern Tree Gully. From there they walked into the forest along tracks built by the timber splitters. A small hotel built nearby in 1875 made it a favourite spot for visitors from Melbourne. A road was finally opened in 1878. The first suggestion to preserve "The Gully" as a park came from Thomas Samuel Grimwood - licensee of the Ferntree Gully Hotel, and a Mr. W. Westfield. The two men approached the Minister of Agriculture in 1881 and the following year, 168 hectares of Fern Tree Gully and nearby One Tree Hill were reserved for public recreation. Thereafter, the reserve was known as the Ferntree Gully National Park, the second in Victoria after Tower Hill near Warrnambool. Grimwood was a trustee of the reserve, as well as the local cemetery. Throughout the 1880s the township began to grow. Shops were established, as well as hotels, churches, and a primary school. With the arrival of the railway line, extended from Ringwood in December 1889, the area became more accessible to visitors. [The hotel photographed here is not to be confused with the 'Royal Fern tree Gully Hotel' which opened its doors in August 1889, situated at the top of Wheeler's Hill, in Upper Fern Gully, and which also still exists today. Nor is it the Ferntree Gully Club Hotel, built in 1866.]
