        La Fortification du Champ de Bataille

      Brussels, Librairie Militaire C. Muquardt, , 1878. Octavo, original purple cloth, title gilt to spine with elaborate panelling in gilt and black, upper board similarly decorated centred on a large tool of a trophy of arms, lower board panelled in black, all edges gilt, marl endpapers. 19 folding plates at the rear. Some light foxing to the fore-edges of the plates, which stand proud of the text-block, otherwise very good indeed. First edition. This appears to be in the de luxe binding with the "atlas de planches" bound in at the rear, and is certainly one of a few copies printed on Holland paper. Essentially the final revision and expansion of Brialmont's Fortification Improvisée of 1870 - "une simple conférence, écrite pour l'armée belge" - taking into account the unfolding events of the Russo-Turkish War, and developed into "une oeuvre arrivée à maturité, un traité complet." Brialmont was one of the most significant thinkers in the field in the latter part of the nineteenth century. A really lovely copy.

MAPS (about 7) PRESENT IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK (with one having a minor tear)!!!! The complex relation between ancestor worship and Christianity in China is not merely a question of theory. It has long been a practical issue of great moment change among Christian missionaries. Indeed, the problem has bulked so large in the past that the events to which it gave rise stand out clearly in the pages of general history. There have been four major chief movements in the history of Christianity in China. There was the Nestorian, beginning in the seventh century; the Franciscan, which was a relatively brief episode chiefly of the early fourteenth century; the basic Roman Catholic movement beginning with the Jesuits in the sixteenth century; and the Protestant movement, beginning in the early nineteenth century and covering the span of this book.         Lives of the Irish Martyrs [ Also, a very full and complete history of The Penal Laws]

      James Sheehy, New York 1878 - New York: James Sheehy, 1878. First Edition. Numerous engravings, fold-out hand-colored map. 9 3/8" x 6 1/2", 751 pp. Green cloth with decorative gilt imprinting, all edges gilt. Light shelf wear, moderate foxing and toning, small scale corner bumping. But for the foxing, Near Fine; as is, better than Very Good Plus. A very handsome copy. Certainly one of the best preserved examples of the sought-after Myles O'Reilly account of famed Irish martyrs, this copy still boasts robust hinges (a common point of failure with this hefty 751 page tome) and a bright, nearly flawless binding. The total absence of previous owner's marks and the virtually original condition of the fragile hand-colored foldout map make this a copy for the serious collector of higher grades. Replete with engravings from the Irish countryside - as well as a remarkable frontispiece engraving of Oliver Plunkett - and treating as it does some several hundred Irish figures, this is a seminal treatise on the subject.         O’Why’he Voyaging Canoe in Hawaiian Waters

      1878 1878 - Cecil Gamlin “O’Why’he Voyaging Canoe in Hawaiian Waters” Signed and dated: “Cecil Gamlin. London Missionary Society. 1878.” Gouache watercolor on paper 8 1/2” x 13 1/4”; 19” x 24” framed (measurements in inches) Even a century after Captain Cook’s death the sense of adventure and exoticism with which Europeans regarded the South Pacific and the Pacific Islands in general had not waned. English missionaries fulfilled many roles as they traveled the globe, including that of providing visual documentation of what they encountered. Cecil Gamlin was a missionary and an artist who worked not just as an English emissary to the islanders, but endeavored to return to Europe with images of the natives that would make them more familiar, and less a people to be feared. This gouache scene of Hawaii is beautifully colored. It highlights the striking landscapes of the Hawaiian islands, while also illustrating the maritime customs of the Hawaiian people.         DICK SAND;

      1878 - or, A Captain at Fifteen. A Novel. New York: George Munro, 1878. 2 pp undated ads. Original green cloth. First Edition in English of this tale originally published in France as UN CAPITAINE DE QUINZE ANS.~A whale hunt in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and the Americas ends in tragedy and Dick Sand, as the only surviving crew member, becomes captain, at fifteen years of age. Not possessing the full skills of a sailor, Dick tries to get the ship east to the South American coast. However, the cook on board has plans of his own and manages to get the ship diverted to eventually land in the country of Angola on the continent of Africa. The cook's plans involve killing Dick and selling the other passengers of the ship into slavery. [Kytasaari]~This tale was first published in English, in November 1878, by the American pirate publisher Munro -- both in a two-volume wrappered format and in this plain green cloth format ("the best manufactured of all Verne books published by Munro"). Sampson Low's authorized London edition was published the following month, in December, at the end of which month Charles Scribner's Sons also published their edition (both dated 1879). Both the Sampson Low and the Scribner editions were titled DICK SANDS (with a final "S").~This is a fine copy, virtually as new. Taves & Michaluk V018; Myers 15.         A History of Gibraltar and its sieges. With photographic illustrations, by J. H. Mann.

      Provost London 1878 - Second edition. 8vo. (22 x 16cm), pp. [v-viii], map, 280; with 16 photographs mounted on thick paper, captioned beneath image; occasional light spotting. Original blue cloth, upper cover and spine richly blocked in gilt, all edges gilt; spine fading, tail of spine slightly rubbed. Luxury edition of Gibraltaran history illustrated by sixteen albumen photographs in attractive contemporary cloth. A History of Gibraltar and its sieges has been consistently attributed to Frederic G. Stephens, the famed art critic and member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. It records Gibraltan history from the days of the Phoenicians until The Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), and concludes recounting a visit by Nelson "a week after the Battle of Trafalgar". It is illustrated with pasted in photographs by J. H. Mann depicting the renowned 'Rock of Gibraltar', coastal scenes and panoramic views of the area. This edition is a "presentation edition" (Gersheim) containing sixteen photographs, rather than standard editions which contained four, or sometimes only one. Two further editions were produced in 1879 and 1900 with the text completely rewritten and all photographs replaced by engravings, hence why this edition is sought-after.         The Consistency of the Axiom of Choice and of the Generalized Continuum-Hypothesis" [and] "Consistency-Proof for the Generalized Continuum-Hypothesis" [and] "The Independence of the Continuum Hypothesis, I-II" in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Volume 24, (1938), pp.556-557 and Volume 25 (1939), 220-224

      - TWO MILESTONE PAPERS ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS. Two volume first edition of Kurt Gödel's proof of the consistency of the axiom of choice and the generalized continuum hypothesis with the axiom of set theory. In 1878, German mathematician Georg Cantor put forth a hypothesis that said any infinite subset of the set of all real numbers can be put into one-to-one correspondence either with the set of integers or with the set of all real numbers ("There is no set whose cardinality is strictly between that of the integers and that of the real numbers"). The continuum problem, as Cantor's problem came to be know, was the first in Hilbert's famous list of mathematical problems, presented in an address in 1900. All attempts to prove or disprove Cantor's conjecture failed until 1938, when Kurt Gödel, in these papers, showed it was impossible to disprove the continuum hypothesis. "Gödel studied the relationship of the continuum hypothesis and the axiom of choice to basic set theory as formulated by the mathematicians Ernst Zermelo and Abraham Fraenkel. In 1940 Gödel showed that both the continuum hypothesis and the axiom of choice are consistent with the axioms of set theory. More precisely, he demonstrated that if the Zermelo-Fraenkel system without the axiom of choice is consistent, then the Zermelo-Fraenkel system with the axiom of choice is consistent, and that the continuum hypothesis is consistent with the Zermelo-Fraenkel system" (Ryan, Thinkers of the Twentieth Century, p. 212f). "Godel's result, joined to [Paul J.] Cohen's (1963-1964), set the stage for a whole new era in the theory of sets in which a host of problems of the consistency or independence of various conjectures in set theory relative to this or that set of axioms are being investigated by constructing models" (Shanker, Godel's Theorem in Focus, 66-67). CONDITION & DETAILS: Eaton: Mack Printing Company. 4to (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). Both volumes handsomely rebound in aged brown cloth (identical to original binding). Gilt-lettered and dated at the spine. Solidly and tightly bound, with both volumes set into a gilt-titled brown slipcase. New endpapers. Very good to near fine condition in every way.

Original light brown pictorial sand grained cloth, titles and decorations to spines and front boards in black and gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Scott, Montagu, South Africa to front free endpapers, Volume I with contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper and binder's ticket of Leighton Son and Hodge to rear pastedown of Volume I. Extremities slightly bumped and rubbed, a few small nicks to spine ends, minor mottling to rear boards, some gentle spotting to fore-edges, prelims lightly foxed, a few roughly opened folds, large folding maps a touch tanned with a few short splits. Volume I: inner hinges cracked, two loose leaves. A very good set. First edition of Stanley's account of his controversial Trans-African Expedition of 1874-7. Exploring equatorial Africa and, in particular, the Great Lakes regions, Stanley finally dispelled Livingstone's notion that the "Lualaba was the source of the Nile and vindicated Speke's claim that the lake seen on his expedition with Burton was indeed one of the sources" (Howgego). While the success in "solving the remaining mysteries of African geography" (ODNB) brought Stanley great acclaim, this was tempered by criticism of the militarisation of his expedition. Following Samuel Baker's lead, the Trans-African Expedition involved "the show and sometimes use of military-like force to counteract local opposition" (Newman, Imperial Footprints: Henry Morton Stanley's African Journeys, p.xix).

This varied treatise, the first of its kind, was produced for a wide circle of gardeners, not the strict horticulturist or botanist, and is aptly presented by American's venerable printing firm of L.       Pernambuco [i.e. Recife], Brazil: F.H. Carls, [1878].. Chromolithographic titlepage, prospectus leaf (tipped in at left edge to inner margin of first plate), followed by forty-eight chromolithographs. Oblong quarto. Original green cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt, boards also stamped in blind. Cloth with slight wear at corners, spine ends, and along the joints; stain in front board near the foredge. Endpapers printed on poor paper. Light scattered foxing to the plates. Very good overall. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. An exceptionally rare Brazilian colorplate book, the first copy we have encountered. The handsome chromolithographs show sights and scenes in the region of Pernambuco (now called Recife), in northeastern Brazil, and were drawn by Franz Heinrich Carls, who also published the work. Born in Germany, Carls arrived in Brazil in 1858, aged thirty, and modified his name to Francisco Henrique Carls. Responsible for the lithographs in Luis Schlappriz's MEMORIA DE PERNAMBUCO (1863), the present series of views is Carls' greatest achievement. With regard to the detailed quality of the images, Correa do Lago supposes that the chromolithographs were based on contemporary photographs. Carls states in the prospectus (tipped into this copy) that he is producing this book in response to the encouragement of a number of friends who have sought a volume of views of places and buildings around Pernambuco that would reflect the recent growth and improvements in the region. He goes on to explain that he intends to produce forty or fifty plates, and that they would be issued by subscription in groups of three or four views at a time. The views include the capital city of Recife, its various neighborhoods, as well as nearby Olinda, Santo Agostinho de Cabo, and Jaqueira. There are also views of the Caxanga road, Rua Barao da Victoria, Rua 1 de Marco, canals, bridges, and busy ports and harbors. There are many views of notable buildings, the state assembly, the presidential palace, churches, railroad lines, large public squares, the main commercial street in Olinda, theatres, gymnasiums, large homes, hospitals, etc. Many of the images reflect the early Dutch influence of the region, since the Dutch West India Company controlled the area for almost a century in the 17th and 18th century and founded the city. They started the sugar plantations which continued to dominate the region, and helped form vast fortunes among the planter class. The overall impression is of a region of progress and wealth, with grand homes and public buildings, broad avenues, and a lively civic and commercial life. OCLC lists only one copy of this title, at the Oliveira Lima Library at Catholic University in Washington, DC. Their copy contains fifty leaves of plates (Correa do Lago states that the number of plates varies, with some copies having as few as fifteen or twenty) but no prospectus leaf, and they give a date of 1860, apparently based on the fact that Carls arrived in Pernambuco just two years earlier. Correa do Lago gives a publication date of 1873, but the prospectus in our copy is dated August 1878, hence our attribution of that date. Not in Borba de Moraes. "O colorido e bastante tenue, o que contribuiu para o atrativo desta extensa serie de imagens que formam uma das reportagens visuais mais abragentes realizadas no periodo sobre qualquer cidade brasileira" - Correa do Lago. This is the first copy we have encountered in more than three decades of active interest in such books. Extremely rare and desirable, with lovely chromolithographs of Brazil. CORREA DO LAGO, BRASILIANA ITAU, pp.328-29. OCLC 40949947.

"Ew. Excellenz wolle mir gestatten, folgende Bitte auszusprechen. Original half morocco over marbled boards, spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in three compartments, gilt tooling in remainder, gilt borders on covers, t.e.g., marbled endpapers Sir Francis Palgrave, FRS, born Francis Ephraim Cohen, (1788-1861) was an English archivist and historian. Palgrave had unparalleled access to original material in the preparation of his history. Palgrave was called to the bar in 1827 (after a long period working for solicitors, 1803-1822). He is best known for his work with what is now the The National Archives, and for his numerous publications. In 1822, he had advocated publishing the national records, and from 1827 he edited several volumes of medieval texts for the Record Commission, including Parliamentary Writs and Writs of Military Summons (2 volumes, 1827 and 1834; including in vol. 2 a text of Nomina Villarum) and Rotuli Curiae Regis: Rolls and Records of the Court held before the King's Justiciars or Justices (2 volumes, 1835). Meanwhile, he was also publishing historical works of his own, including A History of England (1831), The Rise and Progress of the English Commonwealth (1832), An Essay on the Original Authority of the King's Council (1834), Truths and Fictions of the Middle Ages: the Merchant and the Friar (1837) and The History of Normandy and England (1851-64, 4 volumes, of which the last two appeared posthumously). Palgrave is considered the founder of the Public Record Office. In 1834 he succeeded John Caley as the Keeper of the Records in the chapter house of Westminster Abbey, in which were stored the ancient records of the Exchequer (including Domesday Book), as well as various parliamentary records. From this appointment emerged another important editorial work for the Record Commission, The Ancient Kalendars and Inventories of the Treasury of His Majesty's Exchequer (3 volumes, 1836). In 1838 he was appointed Deputy Keeper of the new Public Record Office, holding that position until his death. He was knighted in 1832.. The set is immaculate, bright, crisp, clean and unmarked except for a former owner's printed bookplate on each fep. An extremely attractive set. FINE. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

        Uber Spinalganglien und Ruckenmark des Petromyzon. Offprint

      Vienna, 1878. Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939). Uber Spinalganglien und Ruckenmark des Petromyzon. Offprint from Sitzb. der k. Akad. d. Wissenschaften, 3 Abth., 78 (1878). [Vienna: K.k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1878.] 87 [1]pp. 4 folded lithographed plates by F. Schima after Freud. 244 x 156 mm. (uncut & unopened). Original brown printed wrappers, tears along spine folds, slightly chipped at extremities. Slight foxing but fine. <p>First Separate Edition. Freud&#39;s third paper published as a medical student continued his research on the large Reissner cells in the spinal cord of the fish Petromyzon, which he had undertaken at the direction of the eminent physiologist Ernst Brucke, under whom he was studying. Freud determined these cells to be "nothing else than spinal ganglion cells which, in these low vertebrates. . . remain within the spinal cord.</p><p>" Freud was aided in this research by his improved methods of tissue preparation: "By the use of a gold maceration technique it was possible to make a complete survey of the spinal ganglia of Petromyzon" (Freud, Standard Edition III, p. 229). Freud made a major contribution to evolutionary biology by showing that the spinal ganglion cells of Petromyzon, which "exhibit every transition between bipolarity and unipolarity" (ibid.), represent a transition between the bipolar cells of lower and the unipolar cells of higher vertebrates. He also, in these early researches, took some first steps toward the theory of the neuron, as noted by Freud&#39;s biographer Peter Gay:</p><p>"Some of Freud&#39;s earliest published papers, written between 1877 and 1883, detail findings that are far from trivial. They substantiate evolutionary processes revealed in the nervous structures of the fish he was examining under his microscope. What is more, it becomes clear in retrospect that these papers form the first link in the chain of ideas leading to the draft of a scientific psychology he would attempt in 1895. Freud was working toward a theory specifying the ways that nerve cells and nerve fibrils function as a unit. But he moved on to other investigations, and when, in 1891, H. W. G. Waldeyer published his epoch-making monograph on the "neuron" theory, Freud&#39;s pioneering research was ignored. "It was not the only time," Ernest Jones has noted, "that Freud narrowly missed world fame in early life through not daring to pursue his thoughts to their logical-and not far off-conclusion" (Gay, Freud: A Life for our Time, p. 36).</p><p>Grinstein 34.         THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE. In Three Volumes. (First Edition in Untouched Original Cloth, Primary Binding)

      London: Smith, Elder, 1878. Hardy, Thomas. THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE. In Three Volumes. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1878. First Edition, first issue, printed in an edition of 1,000 copies. Frontispiece map in Vol. 1. A VERY GOOD, untouched and honest copy, all three volumes with double-ruled blocked-in-blind borders on the back covers which definitively denote the primary binding. Original publisher&#39;s brown fine-ribbed cloth, spines and front covers blocked in black, spines blocked in gilt, with cream endpapers. Single leaf of ads at the back of Volume 2. Extremities lightly rubbed, some minor bubbling to the cloth and mild bumping to the corners. Volume 3 shows indents where this set was once bound up (as was the custom of the times) with string. Inner hinges starting, prelims and edges with moderate foxing, no prior ownership markings. Yet despite faults, there is residual freshness to this copy and even a touch of original gloss to the cloth making this several cuts above the average example of this title which is usually found ex-library, worn to bits, or in the three-rule secondary binding (which without question belonged to a remaindered second binding-up of 100 copies accomplished in 1882 by W. Glaisher, wholesale booksellers, a four-year gap from the first binding-up). This is a similar situation to Hardy&#39;s THE TRUMPET-MAJOR (Smith, Elder, & Co., 1880). No matter how some bibliophiles might try to spin it, the two-ruled primary bindings are far preferable to the three-ruled versions which were bound years later. The lending libraries swallowed THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE and THE TRUMPET-MAJOR whole, causing them to be read to pieces and leaving nice, clean copies in the primary binding without library labels few and far between. THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE, Hardy&#39;s sixth novel, remains after 135+ years, one of the great literary masterpieces of the late Victorian era and one of Hardy&#39;s most popular novels, still easily readable today unlike so many other well-known Victorian classics. Plot: Eustacia, the high-spirited tragic heroine, is stifled by life inside bleak Egdon Heath and marries earnest and educated Clym Yeobright as an escape. Eustacia&#39;s former lover, Damon Wildeve, spitefully marries Clym&#39;s cousin Thomasin in revenge for Eustacia refusing to succumb to his physical charms. Bad things happen; there is little justice or mercy for all involved and their fates are not particularly upbeat leaving Hardy, as usual, open to unfair accusations of gleeful pessimism. But a closer reading of THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE shows Hardy&#39;s distinct tenderness toward his flawed characters, simply victims of the same human condition we all endure, constantly smacked around by circumstance and coincidence. An excellent copy of a highly desirable first edition. Housed in a new brown & black matching slipcase spine-lettered in gold. Purdy, pp.24-27; Sadleir 1113. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good.
