PAULET (Vincent) & SARAZIN (Jean)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Radcliffe, J.D.; Stevenson, G.D.; Cox, R.L. (eds.)
Privately Printed, 1877. Four volumes (3,4,5 and 6), bound together as one. First two volumes edited by J.D. Radcliffe; second two edited by G.D. Stevenson and R.L. Cox. Each volume contains around 70 beautiful large-format full-page illustrations which include sketches, details and plans of various buildings, furniture and decorations, mostly but not entirely in England. Bound in half leather with grey boards and gilt text (P.S.B./Vols. 3.4.5.6.) and bands on spine. Overall good condition - pages a little faded with light foxing at edges and sometimes on pages. Endpapers a little grubby and quite darkened at edges; noticeable liquid stain on some pages near ends. Binding secure but a bit shaky. Hinges very worn at outside, heavy wear to corners and spine, boards quite grubby/faded, light overall wear to edges. Overall, though, a fascinating, beautiful and unusual volume. PLEASE NOTE: this is a very large and heavy volume and will attract additional shipping charges, depending on buyer location and desired speed of delivery. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

F.V. Hayden
1877 - In 1869 Hayden was given a large appropriation and made head of the "United States Geological Survey of the Territories." The biggest and best-known of the Great Surveys. Hayden was a good theoretical geologist but his eye was on practical. The purpose of his expeditions to the Rocky Mountains was to find coal and other minerals; consequently he was always well supported by Congress as well as local western interests. In addition to his interest in western minerals, Hayden was also one of the first to see the West as the land of the nature-loving tourist. In 1871 Hayden made an expedition into the Yellowstone Geyser Region resulting in spectacular photographs taken by William H. Jackson. The Yellowstone expedition made Hayden famous, but perhaps his most important was the detailed exploration and mapping of Colorado. Here his teams worked through some of the most rugged country in the West to complete the masterful Atlas of Colorado. This map of Central Colorado is from Hayden's Geological and Geographical Atlas of Colorado and Portions of Adjacent Territory, published in 1877. Cities, towns, topographical features, rail roads and proposed rail roads are illustrated. A fantastic map with fine detailing. In excellent condition.

BURTON, Sir Richard F.
London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1877. London:: Richard Bentley and Son, 1877., 1877. 2 volumes. 8vo. xii, 343; iv, 331, [1] pp. Half-title (vol. I as called for). Dedication page to the memory of General Walter Scott, Bombay Engineers. Original mauve cloth stamped with black decorative pattern, gilt-stamped spines; neatly rebacked to match original, preserving original spines. Bookplates of George Merryweather. Very good. FIRST EDITION. This is essentially an annotated reprint of Burton's 1851 book, Scinde, or the Unhappy Valley. For this edition he made a return pilgrimage back to the Karachi area on the coast of present day Pakistan. // As with the first printing, this edition also includes the tale of the Persian girl (vol. I, pp. 119-123). The tale would be seemingly insignificant and yet Georgiana Stisted writes that the romance was true. Lovell seems to be correct in interpreting a poem written by Burton, previously unpublished, telling of the beauty and tragedy befalling this Persian princess. Lovell's position is that the story is fiction and the poem seems to support that theory it is not autobiographical because Burton never visited Persia "or other places mentioned in the poem", nor was he old when he wrote the piece. Seemingly he was interested in the process of story-telling and adding elements that imitated a Persian classic tale, using their own traditions, ideals and consequences. See: Lovell, pp. 59-64. // Farwell reports "… there is an interesting footnote in Sind Revisited relating to Charles Darwin. Darwin's Descent of Man had been published in 1871 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith, Philip H
Pawling, New York: Published by the author, 1877. First edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. A scarce work which includes the large folding color map (17 1/2 x 28") of the county at the front of the volume. Dutchess County is mis-spelled in the title. The county was one of the 12 original divisions of the Colony of New York, organized by the first Colonial Assembly in 1683 and named in honor of the Dutchess of York, wife of the Duke (later King James II), to whom New York had been granted by King Charles II. The Appendix includes Brief sketches of the towns of Putnam County (formerly in Dutchess); Extracts from the records, including rolls of revolutionary soldiers from the county; list of newspapers, and genealogies of a few families. 8vo, 507pp, b&w frontispiece of the city of Poughkeepsie, b&w woodcut illustrations throughout, folding color map of the county, b&w illustration at colophon. Dark brown original cloth covers with gilt title on spine; spine tips chipped, corners lightly bumped. The folding county map has slightly popped the lower binding due to its thickness, and the map has an early reinforcement on the verso of the lower part, a bit of damp marking at lower portion; the title page and frontispiece a bit frayed lower edges, otherwise good + condition.

John Albert Chirnside's obituary notice appeared in the MelbourneArgus on Friday 20 April, 1877: 'CHIRNSIDE-On the 18th inst., at Mount Rothwell, Little River, of convulsions from diarrhoea, JohnAlbert, fourth son of Robert and Margaret Chirnside, aged 10 weeks.' This dramatic studio portrait must have been taken shortly before the infant's death. John Albert's mother, Margaret Chirnside, was the wife of Robert Chirnside of Mount Rothwell station, Little River, just north of Geelong. Robert was the nephew of two of Port Phillip's wealthiest pastoralists, Thomas and Andrew Chirnside, owners of a vast amount of land in the Western District and of the neighbouring Werribee Park station. Robert had purchased his land at Mount Rothwell in 1865. The Mount Rothwell homestead, an Italianate bluestone building, was designed by P. Colquhuoun and completed in 1872. This heritage listed building - which has survived with its original features, including internal walls with stencilled and painted art work, essentially intact - is considered to be one of the finest extant examples of an early Port Phillip squatter's residence. The railway line between Melbourne and Geelong had been completed in 1876, the year prior to John Albert's death. It seems reasonable to assume that Margaret Chirnsi … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERTAGNOLLI C.
Tipografia Barbera, 1877. In 16, pp. 232. Anon.
Manuscript poem, comprised of thirty four-line stanzas written in ink on seven sides of four small quarto sized sheets of lined paper, unsigned but dated after the first seven stanzas Dec. 2 1877 and at the foot of the final pageNov. 7 1878. Complete, clean and legible. The steamer London, out of Plymouth and bound for Melbourne, sank in the Bay of Bisay on 11 January 1866, with the loss of 220 lives. Only 19 souls were saved. On board the London was the English actor Gustavus Brooke, who is reputed to have manfully assisted in operating the ship's pumps in a vain attampt to avert disaster, and to have uttered the words: "If you succeed in saving yourself, give my kind farewell to the people of Melbourne." A full account of the loss of the London - one of many published at the time - appeared in the Illustrated Sydney News on16 April 1866. The anonymous manuscript poem we offer here, commemorating one of the most infamous maritime disasters associated with Australia, was written within twelve years of the event and appears never to have been published. A short contemporary commentary on the disaster written by Tom Cringle, titled 'The loss of the London', was published in Melbourne in 1866, copies of which are held in the State Library of New South Wales and State Library of Victoria. An anonymous broadside ballad, also with the same title, is known, but is completely unrelated to the present manuscript.
