Zwerger, Johann Baptist, österr. Fürstbischof von Seckau (1824-1893).
Graz, 1877. Akademien. Der Verfasser zahlr. READE (Charles, D C L )
In three volumes. William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1877. All Rights reserved. 3 Vols.; integral advertisement leaf at end of volumes two and three; pp.[iv]+280; [iv]+285+[i (blank)]+[ii]; [iv]+282+[ii]; diagonally very fine ribbed Royal blue cloth, ruled and blocked black on front cover, blind on back cover, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; top- and fore- edges uncut; end-papers coated dark chocolate. Spines very slightly worn at extremities, with small chip to cloth (2 x 8mm) at tail of volume one; small hole in front end-paper of same volume, and slight cracking to some end-papers; otherwise, and in general effect, a fine copy in a fine green quarter calf book-form slip-case. The Morris L. Parrish copy, with his book-plate on each front paste-down. Includes (on p.149 in volume three) the first use of the phrase 'new woman'. Of particular interest in that context are Chapters XIV and XV (pp. [1] - 74) in volume two, which made the case for the equal treatment of women, and arguably sparked off the whole Women's Movement in the latter part of the nineteenth century. One of the heroines, it is delicately hinted, is a lesbian, though this is incidental to the major theme. Rated six in sadleir's schedule of 'Comparative Scarcities', but not in his collection; 'Excursions', p.166; this title not in Wolff. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Polgar, Alfred, Schriftsteller (1873-1955).
8° An Evchen (d.i. Sie fehlen uns sehr, w i r k l i c h . . Sprache: Deutsch. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[San Francisco]: Morse's Gallery, 1877. Albumen photographic panorama mounted on eleven panels, the entire panorama measuring a total of 7 1/2 x 87 1/4 inches. This remarkable panorama dramatically shows the growth of San Francisco nearly thirty years after the onset of the Gold Rush. In the 1870s, San Francisco audiences were hungry for panoramic displays, and the rest of the country was intrigued by San Francisco, the largest city in the West. Muybridge satisfied all appetites by providing a 360 view of the city, creating what Rebecca Solnit calls "an impossible sight, a vision of the city in all directions, a transformation of a circular space into a linear photograph." David Harris calls Muybridge's San Francisco panorama "one of the supreme conceptual and technical achievements in the history of architectural photography." Eadweard Muybridge took the photographs that make up this panorama from a vantage point on the central tower of the unfinished Nob Hill residence of railroad baron Mark Hopkins, then the highest point in the developed portion of the city. The work was done in June or … [Click Below for Full Description]

Upton, William Henry
1877. Four volumes, small quarto, 756 pages plus blanks, and several pages of accounts, bound in either original ¼ leather and marbled boards, or ¼ leather and cloth, entries written in a neat legible hand in either pencil or ink. Four diaries kept by Upton as a young man, the first dates from when he was an 18 year old in Portland, Oregon, to 1877 when he graduated from Yale. Upton's diaries contain a frank account of his activities, attending school, preparing for college, and descriptions of life in Portland and later college life at Yale, and his interior life, his religious faith, which was often in conflict with other aspects of his personality, his literary efforts - poetry writing, and constant self-examination - Upton concludes that he suffers from Depression or "hypochondria" as it was then sometimes called. He is by turns self-confident, jealous, and insecure, he was also equipped with a powerful and obsessive attraction for members of the opposite sex, Upton is extremely frank and revealing about his desires and his actions upon them for a person writing at this time. Upton also reveals himself as the perpetrator of an infamous episode in 19th century Yale history - the break in, on the night of September 29, 1876, of Skull and Bones. Upton along with two of his associates were the self-styled "Order of the File and Claw," which accomplished this feat. Upton also reveals himself to be the author of a pamphlet describing the event which appeared anonymously later that year, entitled: The Fall of Skull and Bones. Compiled from the Minutes of the 38th Regular Me … [Click Below for Full Description]
