SEWELL, Anna.
London: Jarrold and Sons, [1877]. London: Jarrold and Sons,, [1877]. Rare presentation copy Octavo. Original brown cloth, rebacked with original spine laid down, spine and front board lettered and decorated in black and gilt, rear board blocked in blind, brown endpapers (Carter's B binding), edges trimmed. Housed in a custom red morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Housed in a custom dark red folding case, front cover with a panelled onlay of Black Beauty. Engraved frontispiece after C. Hewitt, 8 pp. publisher's ads at end. Tips restored, worn, inner hinges reinforced, occasional soiling, a well-read copy, good. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in her own hand on the first blank, "For the Patients of the London Temperance Hospital with the Author's best wishes", and with a secondary ownership inscription ("Hughes") above. Conceivably this is John Hughes (1827-1896) who was treasurer of the London Temperance Hospital for about 25 years. A very apposite association: the London Temperance Hospital, in Hampstead Road, London, opened on 6 October 1873 by initiative of the National Temperance League, and was managed by a board of 12 teetotallers. Anna Sewell and her mother were both heavily involved in the temperance movement and the theme is strongly invoked in Black Beauty. This Victorian classic was the only book of its bedridden author, who died shortly after its publication, much too soon to appreciate its slowly accumulated worldwide success. Presentation or inscribed copies are understandably rare and the majority are not inscribed by the author h … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORRIS, William:
London, Ellis and White, 1877. Octavo, viii, 392 pages. Three-quarter dark blue morocco and cloth (with the stamp of the binders, Root & Son); spine gilt in compartments; sides ruled in gilt; top edge gilt; leather a little rubbed at the extremities; the rear top corner lightly bumped; an old tear to the first contents leaf neatly sealed; light traces on the front pastedown where a bookplate has been removed; trifling signs of use; overall an excellent copy. Provenance: T.G.H. Strehlow (Melbourne, 31 January 1945), with these details in ink on an early binder's blank. This provenance is significant, given that Strehlow was soon to begin work on his magnum opus, 'Songs of Central Australia' (not published until 1971). 'A dense, often bewilderingly literary work, with Greek and Norse mythological analogies, ["Songs"] seamlessly merged his own and his father's research into Arrernte sacred verse and totemic geography' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). Morris's epic would have been of interest to Strehlow both for its subject matter (the Volsung saga) and for its setting in an archaic loose epic metre. Strehlow invokes Morris explicitly at least once in 'Songs' (in the conclusion), and draws regularly on archaic verse forms and Norse legends in his exposition of the ceremonial verse of the Arrernte people.

Wagner, Richard [translated by Alfred Forman]
London: Schott, 1877. First Edition. 1/2 cloth. Near fine. 1st collected edition in English, complete in 356 pages (a copy with less pages is missing something). The Rhein-Gold, The Walkyrie, Siegfried, and Dusk of the Gods, preceded in English only by the privately printed individual librettos (a hastily gathered, abridged assembly, of 238 pages total, published to secure copyright). Our edition (issued to accompany Wagner's conducting of the cycle in London) has all 4 parts with all the stage directions and dialogue. Contemporary half cloth, marbled boards, printed paper label, near fine, complete with the volume half-title, the 4 half-titles for the individual parts, and the coda (To Richard Wagner). Ex-Edw. Schuberth, with his company's oval stamp to the general half-title. The source was the prodigious German epic poem Das Nibelungen Lied, anonymously written by an unknown massive-aggressive in the 12th century about events in the 5th or 6th. It recounts the deeds of Siegfried the Dragon Slayer (the Germanator), his betrayal and murder, and the revenge of his wife Kriemhilda (the real heroine). In 1816 Professor of philology Karl Lachmann began a careful study of the 11 known, more or less complete, manuscripts, then ordered them chronologically, collated, corrected, translated and amalgamated them, to finally produce the version in Middle High German. It remains a foundational pillar of European literature, but it was Wagner (1813-1883) who transformed it into an opera (the only venue where people die of love) by first revisiting Lachmann, then brooding upon it, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kleines Bibliotheksschild am Rücken unten, sonst sehr gut erhalten. Umfaßt u.a. auch den Briefwechsel mit J. Herschel dem bekannten Astronomen, C.Herschel's Neffe.
