PRISSE D'AVENNES, A[chille] C[onstant] T[heodore] Emile.
Paris Morel. Four volumes comprising 3 folio volumes of lithographs and 1 text volume, 4to. pp. viii, 296; viii; viii; viii. Illustrated with 200 lithographs plates, 130 in colour, 48 tinted; text volume with 34 plates and 73 text illustrations; 5 plates smaller and mounted to size, scattered light foxing. Modern dark blue half morocco gilt, marbled sides, a very good, attractive set. One of the most important books on Islamic art and architecture, focusing on monuments in Egypt. Emile Prisse d'Avennes, orientalist & Muslim convert, obsessive in his attention to detail, was, after Champollion, the greatest pre-twentieth century Egyptologist. A French nobleman by birth, though impoverished, Prisse d'Avennes seems to have spent his life in the pursuit of the exotic. After a period fighting for Greek independence he travelled to India, a journey that prefigured his extensive Middle Eastern travels, which during the next 40 years took him to Palestine, Syria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Arabia, Persia, and most importantly Egypt and Algeria where he lived. Like Coste, Prisse d'Avennes worked for the Viceroy Mohammed Ali, though he quarrelled with Mohammed Ali subsequently and left his service. In 1860, Prisse d'Avennes returned to France with the fruits of his travels: 300 folio drawings, 400 metres of bas-reliefs, 150 photographs of important architectural details, 150 sketches, and daguerrotypes and numerous plans, details and elevations copied on the scene; he also returned with 29 skulls from ancient mummies, to each of which he had succeeded in ascribing a date, name and function. BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION]
London H. M. S. O 1877 - First edition. Folio, viii, 484pp., 16 folding maps, 16 plates, illustrations in the text, contemporary blue half roan, marbled boards, lightly faded, neat restoration to extremities, an excellent copy. One of the most valuable sources for the history of exploration in northern Canada. The Nares expedition, so called after its commander George Nares (1831-1915), sailed in two ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery, in late May of 1875, in quest of the North Pole. The ships reached Lady Franklin Bay on North Ellesmere Island and the Alert went on to reach the extreme north of the island, the highest latitude that had yet been reached by a ship. In April 1876, three separate sledge parties set out but the men showed serious signs of scurvy and several members died. Nares was forced to abandon the expedition and returned to England in September that year. Despite the difficulties faced by the expedition, it did produce important scientific results including a study of Inuit dog disease and a volume of physical observations. The Nares expedition is one of the best documented Arctic expeditions, with eight Parliamentary Blue Books alone devoted to it between 1875 and 1878. Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson wrote "[The Arctic Blue Books] are beyond comparison the most important tool of knowledge in this field ." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

WALLACE, D. MacKenzie.
Cassell London 1877 - Sixth edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xiv, 466; viii, 472pp., 2 folding coloured maps, owners' inscriptions to half-title in two hands. Publisher's orange cloth with gilt lettering to upper covers and spines; soiled, some spotting to upper cover of vol 1, some wear to extremities of spines. Wallace (1841-1919), a newspaper correspondent and editor, was engaged in qualifying for a professorship in Comparative Law in Germany when he accepted a private invitation to visit Russia. He had expressed a desire to study the Ossetes, a peculiar Aryan tribe in the Caucasus. However, he remained in Russia nearly six years, studying not the Ossetes but the Russians. He familiarised himself thoroughly with the life of the people by settling for long periods in remote villages. In 1876 he returned to England where he published the present work, his most famous work. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris, en vente chez tous les libraires, 1877, 8, 32 pp., Abbildungen, Broschur. "La Théorie Hugodécimale ou, La Base scientifique et definitive de l'Arithmologistique universelle. Par le Cte. Léopold Hugo. (Paris, 1877.) M. Hugo continues to pour forth his pamphlets with their polyglot inscriptions. On this we have " Urbi et orbi. Hic tandem triumphaliter fulget REGULARITAS!" " La pan-imaginarité Hugomathique : CONTINUITAS ! CONTINUITAS ! TRICONTINUITAS ! " We have, in a former notice, glanced at the " Géométrie Hugomoïdale." One or two extracts must suffice to show how our author proceeds :- "Évocation Chino-Tibétaine. " Salut ! Salut ! Tevis, A[ugustus] H[avens], Rev , A M
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1877. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12 mo - over 6.75" to 7.75" tall, 259 pgs. As a current book review stated, "It seems like a dream to have seen the first vessel sailing for this El Dorado in 1848, and now within thirty years to be reviewing the history of an Empire". Not surprisingly for a farm boy (see below), part of this book extolls the "returns of nature to the husbandman" - the review states that "no where in America is the harvest, owing to the freedome from dampness, more certain than in California". The volume contains many more observations and notes on the area, including the giant trees of Yosemite, with measurements given of "the greater monsters", a chapter on the (alas, somewhat prevalent view of the day) of the "Heathen Chinee", and observations on the educational faciliites and charitable institutions, which are claimed to be "second to none". The author offers some interesting observations, such as "Do not try to beat a professional gambler out of his coin", "never touch spirituous liquors, leave drinking to the pioneers of '49" and " no man should entertain the thought for a moment of starting in business on borrowed capital". ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR: The Rev. Augustus Havens Tevis (1841-1904) was born in Indiana to a farming family and left college in 1861 to enlist as a Union solider in the Civil War, serving for three years. He was mustered out in November of 1864 and re-entered college, graduating with his A.M. degree in 1868. After travelling for the church as far away as Palestine and Peru, he was s … [Click Below for Full Description]
