1877 - Seyffardt's Gids Door Amsterdam Met Platte Grond (Amsterdam guidebook with folio lithographed folding city plan) Issued 1877, Amsterdam by Seyffardt. Fine, appealing and very uncommon old map with original hand color. Still contained within the original 20 pp. guide-book as issued. Very scarce thus. Apparently not mentioned or seen by Hameleers in his authoritative cartobibliography on Amsterdam city plans. The example he shows has an entirely different arrangement to the list Key seen at both side bottom corners. The example he shows starts with #45 and continues to 70 in right column, which contains a long list below this. Our example starts here at #41 lower right and stops at #69. As originally issued long ago, an actual antique/ vintage printed sheet of paper, not a modern copy or reprint of an old map. The paper will show various minor signs of age, but if we are offering it for sale, you can be certain it is entirely worthy of ownership by even the most discerning collector or dealer. Sheet remains well preserved, keeping in mind it is not modern or new, so minor flaws to paper unworthy of specific mention are sometimes to be expected. Some light age wear or surface spotting/ soiling, all of which is hopefully visible within the zoomable scan. Paper and image remains overall clean & sound. Old maps & prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jeans, James
First edition, first impression of this elegant Art Deco style volume on cosmology, uncommon in the dust jacket. Author James Jeans (1877-1946) was a respected Cambridge mathematician and astronomer, best known for his work on rotating, gravitational bodies, " a problem of fundamental importance that had already been tackled by some of the leading mathematicians" (ODNB), and the motions, structures, and life-cycles of stars and stellar clusters. "In 1928 Jeans's academic work Astronomy and Cosmogony came to the attention of S. C. Roberts, the secretary of Cambridge University Press, who appreciated the general interest of its subject matter and the attraction of Jeans's writing style. He persuaded Jeans to write a popular account, The Universe Around Us, which was published by the press in 1929" (ODNB). Jeans's popularity as a writer "depended partly on his topic--new, thought provoking views of the universe--and partly on his style, which combined an authoritative knowledge of the subject with a vivid turn of phrase" (ODNB). The present volume was the second of Jeans's works for a general readership, and is an expanded version of the Rede Lecture he gave at Cambridge in 1930. It includes chapters on the origin of our solar system, "the new world of modern physics", the relationship between matter and energy, relativity theory, and the structure of the universe, and is illustrated throughout by stylish Art Deco woodcuts. The book proved to be so popular that Jeans's conclusion, 'the Great Architect of the Universe now begins to appear as a pure mathematician', has often bee … [Click Below for Full Description]

FALCONI Agostino.
Roux e Favale, 1877. Prima edizione italiana. Cm17x11,3. Pg.142. Codice libreria 129456.

Hg. Sarah Lees. London 2013.
[Attributes: Hard Cover]
