WYNTER, A.
London: Henry Renshaw, 1877. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, red edges, black coated endpapers. Spine rolled, covers rather mottled and slightly rubbed, inner joints cracked but sound. The scarce second edition - first published in 1875 - of this influential work by the physician and author Andrew Wynter (1819-1876), "his only serious and substantial treatment of a medical subject, [in which] he expressed his firm belief in the importance of treating victims of mental illness without recourse to physical restraint. This volume was reissued with five additional chapters by J. M. Granville in 1877" (ODNB). There are essays on non-restraint in the treatment of the insane, the training of imbecile children, "brain enigmas", hallucinations and dreams, and "the suicidal act". Granville (1833-1900) - inventor of nerve-vibration therapy and designer of the electric vibrator, or percussor, but known colloquially as "Granville's hammer" and patented in the early 1880s - added chapters on "eccentricities of the mentally affected" and four others entitled "Mazeland", "Dazeland", "Driftland" and "Counsel". These are an early attempt at psychiatric nosology and prefigure the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The American edition of Borderlands (New York: Putnam's, 1875) was reviewed by William James ("the author writes an excellent style. and we do not scruple to express the hope that Dr Wynter's little work will be widely read"). Copac locates copies at only five British and Irish institutional librarie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leyden, Ernst v. -
Berlin 5.VII.1877. 1 2/3 Seiten 8. Gedruckter Briefkopf.

[Click Below for Full Description]
