Hg. Sarah Lees. London 2013.
[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Buffalo & Chicago: Phoenix Lithograph Co, (n. d.). Ca 1877. Printed self-wrappers. Abrasions & chipping at edges, perhaps evidence of prior mounting (affects caption lettering at bottom). 1/2" splt along one fold. A VG copy.. 1 sheet, printed both sides. 2 publisher horizontal fold-lines. Recto with 3 color lithographs, "The Palace Depot of the World", "The Palace Steamer of the World", & "The Finest Route to All Points East." Sheet: 10-5/8" x 6-13/16" This pamphlet announces the May1st 1877 re-opening of the NYC - Boston transit which combined sea & rail, having ceased operation 30 years earlier. In this updated iteration, 2 steamboats, the Massachusetts (newly constructed) and the Rhode Island ("Queen of the Sound") plied the waters between Pier 29, North River, NYC & Fox Point Wharf, Providence. From Providence to Boston was accomplished via rail, 42 miles in "60 minutes". Per an 1880 New York Times notice, the steamers were "magificent", and the rail ride was judged "one of the smoothest". Scarce bit of ephemera documenting this popular New England transit route.

ALEXANDER
1877 - saying se is delighted "to do anything for you or your Bishop but it is very true that much of my hymns are copyright. Of those that you have named only the last two 'We are but Little Children' and 'When Wounded Sore' are at my disposal and I freely place them at your disposal. The first hymn you name 'For all thy Saints' is not mine. I enclose the hymns that I wrote lately and which have never been published, perhaps the Bishop might approve of them for the New Zealand collection ." she goes on to apologise for her late reply as she has been away and hadn't been able to "get hold of the enclosures till today. Dear Caroline Abraham! the sight of you at Croydon brought her so vividly to my mind but it was not a place to speak of what was in one's heart. I should so have liked to have a good talk with you . I hope we may be able some day to make out a visit to Lichfield when we are in England, it would gratify us both very much but the Bishop of Derry is generally in a hurry .", 4 sides 8vo., The Palace, Derry, 27th October, no year, circa She began writing verse in her childhood. Her religious work was strongly influenced by her contacts with the Oxford Movement and in particular with John Keble, who edited one of her anthologies. By the 1840s she was already known as a hymn writer. Her book, Hymns for Little Children reached its 69th edition before the close of the nineteenth century. She wrote some of the truly classic hymns and carols notably "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "There is a Green Hill Far Away" and "Once in Royal David's City".

Blanc de Saint-Bonnet, Antoine, franz. Philosoph, Soziologe u. Schriftsteller (1815-1880)
Lyon u.a., 1857-1877. MORE, Robert Jasper.
London, Henry S. King, 1877. 8vo. Original green pictorial cloth, blocked in gilt and black; pp. xii, 272. 32 (advertisements), with wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, one folding lithographic map, wood-engraved plate and several illustrations in the text; cloth a little marked, one corner bumped, a few pages with light spotting. Scarce first edition; presentation copy, inscribed From the Author on half-title. Published two years before the Berlin Conference which aimed at sorting out the unruly remnants of the Ottoman Empire on the Balkans and based on the English liberal politician's tour to Bulgaria, which was in unrest and insurrectionists, some supported by Russian circles, made his sojourn rather interesting. More reports on the customs of Bulgarians, their economics, agriculture and relation to the Turkish masters, the Turkish rulers and their administration, who had brutally suppressed the uprising in central Bulgaria in May. The American Roberts College in Istanbul had been the channel for information about the events to the West, and More investigated himself what was going on in a part of the world almost completely unknown to the British. The map shows the region around Plovdiv.

Charles Daremberg - Edmond Saglio
Bel ensemble. A.Ph. [Click Below for Full Description]

Albumen print photograph, 150 x 205 mm, laid down on original card mount, 245 x 300 mm, recto with printed caption beneath image: Aboriginal natives of Victoria hop gathering; verso with series title and number, followed by a paragraph of printed text: 'The growth of Hops has of late years occupied the attention of farmers in most of the colonies, and with the most encouraging results. It has been introduced with considerable success on most of the Aboriginal Stations in Victoria. Our illustration represents a group of Natives gathering Hops on the Station at Bairnsdale, in Gipps Land'. A good, clear print with excellent tonal range; mild foxing to the margins of the mount. Following the great success achieved by the Aboriginal community on the Coranderrk Reserve near Healesville, east of Melbourne, market gardening and hop growing were experimented with on other Aboriginal reserves and missions. This important photograph by Nicholas Caire shows Aborigines in their hop garden within the Lake Tyers reserve in far east Gippsland.
