Paris, Boulevards, 46 etchings - Martial, Adolphe-P
Paris, Imprimerie de Baillet, 1877. circa 44,4 x 33,5 (binding)., 46 etchings (11,3 x 16,2 to 14,3 x 24,3 cm) mounted on large leaves of heavy paper. Contemporary brown Morocco with richly gilt spine, covers and fore-edges, gilt arms on both covers (binding by Gelz-Niedrée) Bénézit VIII, 446 (see A.M. Potement). Rare suite of etchings by Adolphe Théodore Jules Martial Potémont (1828-1883), who had studied with Léon Cogniet and Brissot de Warville. Originally only 20 views were published with texts by Saulnat and others. We can trace series of up to 45 etchings - here there are 46! Most have a description in pencil, the title is also signed and has the information "tiré à 5 (9?) exemplaires, no 2". This is obviously number 2 of a very small edition printed for a few collectors. The suptuous binding by Gelz-Niedrée (cf. Helwig II, 175) has been made for a British aristocrat (a standing lion to the left under three horseshoes with the motto "pro legibus et regibus" - possibly the Wilson family). Among the beautiful views are several bookshops, cafes, hotels, passages etc. Walter Benjamin writes about Martial in his "Stadt-Bild im Wandel". - Nice and clean, the magnificent binding with small scratches or a little rubbed, but very decorative. Assez bel exemplaire. Ex-library bookplate and embossed stamps (incl. title). Very good. FIRST EDITION OF LORD RAYLEIGH' SEMINAL WORK ON ACOUSTICS. First edition. While Strutt won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904 for his discovery of argon with William Ramsay, and did significant research in numerous fields, his most notable achievement was on acoustics, which is still referred to today by acoustical engineers. "The Theory of Sound was kept up-to-date with appropriate revisions and is still a vade mecum in every acoustical research library." - DSB XIII, p. 104. / "While laying a firm foundation for his acoustical research... Strutt began to write The theory of sound ... in December 1872 in the cabin of a boat on the Nile, where he was taking a rest cure after an attack of rheumatic fever that had nearly killed him. His excellent mathematical skills, which were imparted by his coach E.J. Routh, were highlighted in analyses of mechanical vibrations relating to sound. He aimed at a generalized mathematical treatise, which would be abreast of William Thomson's and P.G. Tait's Treatise on natural philosophy (1867) and Maxwell's Treatise on electricity and magnetism (1873)." He returned to London the following year in 1873 and consulted with his colleagues. Maxwell was one of those. H.M. Taylor contributed as proofreader. "The academic response to this treatise was beyond expectation. McLeod, Donald (1779-1879). Canadian Rebel General & Patriot who was a strong supporter of Canada's independence from Great Britain.
West Cleveland, [Ohio], circa [1877]. [1877]. West Cleveland, [Ohio], circa [1877]., [1877]. Very good. - General Donald McLeod's autograph on a 2-5/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide buff white card. Signed "Genl. Donald McLeod, Age Ninety Nine, West Cleveland" in an understandably slightly shaky hand given his advanced age (McLeod was 101 years old when he passed away 2 years later). The edges of the card are slightly darkened with some minor soiling. Very good. Born in Scotland, Donald McLeod (1779-1879) joined the British navy in 1803 and subsequently switched to the infantry in 1808. McLeod came to be regarded as a British War Hero following his participation in several battles against Napoleon's forces, including Waterloo, and subsequent pivotal battles for Colonial Canada. Settling in Prescott, Ontario he became a major in the militia and a school teacher. McLeod published a newspaper which pushed for political reform in Canada. A Tory mob trashed his printing office in retaliation after Mackenzie's attack on Toronto and the Battle of Montgomery's Tavern. An angry McLeod fled to the U.S. to join up with Mackenzie. At 59, he came to the Patriot War with more war experience than any others and soon found himself a general leading over 500 men over 500 miles during the Winter. The U.S. neutrality law forbade attacks on Canada, and McLeod's weapons and supplies were confiscated by U.S. officers. Though it was illegal to attack Canada according to the neutrality law, it was not illegal to plan and prepare to attack the U.S.'s Northern neighbor. So, on February 24, 1838, Gener … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cameron's route across Africa, from the mainland opposite Zanzibar to Benguela in Angola, is clearly illustrated on the large and detailed folding map. Cameron had begun his career in the Navy and served in the Red Sea in the 1860s in order to suppress the slave trade, where he learned Swahili and some Arabic. In about 1870 'Cameron was appointed to the steam reserve at Sheerness, from where he began an active campaign to convince the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) to send him as part of a search expedition to find David Livingstone in central Africa. He was not chosen to participate on the expedition under L. S. Dawson that the RGS eventually sent, but the news that Henry Morton Stanley had found Livingstone caused that expedition to be abandoned even before it left Bagamoyo, on the east African coast. This proved a boon to Cameron, who, after continuing to offer his services to the RGS, was finally selected to lead a further expedition to find Livingstone - then … [Click Below for Full Description]

Levinstein, Eduard:
London: Henry Renshaw,, 1877. New Edition, Revised. With Five New Chapters by J. Mortimer Granville Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, red edges, black coated endpapers. Spine rolled, covers rather mottled and slightly rubbed, inner joints cracked but sound. The scarce second edition - first published in 1875 - of this influential work by the physician and author Andrew Wynter (1819-1876), "his only serious and substantial treatment of a medical subject, [in which] he expressed his firm belief in the importance of treating victims of mental illness without recourse to physical restraint. This volume was reissued with five additional chapters by J. M. Granville in 1877" (ODNB). There are essays on non-restraint in the treatment of the insane, the training of imbecile children, "brain enigmas", hallucinations and dreams, and "the suicidal act". Granville (1833-1900) - inventor of nerve-vibration therapy and designer of the electric vibrator, or percussor, but known colloquially as "Granville's hammer" and patented in the early 1880s - added chapters on "eccentricities of the mentally affected" and four others entitled "Mazeland", "Dazeland", "Driftland" and "Counsel". These are an early attempt at psychiatric nosology and prefigure the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The American edition of Borderlands (New York: Putnam's, 1875) was reviewed by William James ("the author writes an excellent style... and we do not scruple to express the hope that Dr Wynter's little work will be widely read"). CAMERON, Verney Lovett.
1877 - London, Daldy, Isbister & Co., 1877. Two volumes, 8vo. Original blue cloth gilt, map of Africa in gilt to upper covers; pp. xvi, 389, [4, advertisements]; xii, 366, 8 [advertisements]; numerous wood-engravings. including 29 full-page, 4 tinted facsimile letters including 3 folding, 1 large folding map in rear pocket to volume one; very light rubbing to binding; a beautiful set; contemporary ownership inscriptions to titles. First edition. A superb account of Cameron's journey from the east to the west coast of Africa, relating details of the customs and manners of the indigenous people encountered along the way. This proved a boon to Cameron, who, after continuing to offer his services to the RGS, was finally selected to lead a further expedition to find Livingstone … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOURDAULT JULES.
Hachette, 1877. In Folio (370x280); pagg. VIII, 743.
