Riemer, Gustav Adolph:
O.O.1877. 97 (davon 3 doppelte) Original-Stereofotografien. [Click Below for Full Description]

Whistler, James Abbott McNeill, American painter and etcher (1834-1903).
N. p., [probably early 1877]. 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To "my dear Black": "Noch nicht! noch nicht! my dear Black! I am a little behind hand - curious aint it! That confounded Peacock Room has nearly ruined me and I have had to work frightfully to make up for it. It will be all right directly of course but I am woefully pushed. - Beseech HRH to be indulgent and appoint some day next week - say Saturday or Friday afternoon at about 5 'o'clock and I will try to be ready for her and shall be so enchanted to see her interest in what I have been doing - I think you will like the pictures - manage this my dear Black for your [xxx] [Whistler's butterfly monogram]. Just write a line to say it is all right". - The letter discusses a proposed visit from Princess Louise, the daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquis of Lorne. The Princess was herself an artist - a sculptor of note - and Whistler's correspondence indicates she took a keen interest in his work. The two pencil sketches appear to have been drawn before the letter was written. If they are by Whistler, we can assume that they have something to do with a commission he was working on for Princess Louise. The drawings seem to be preliminary sketches for a crest, which features a dog and crossed swords. - The stupendously opulent and beautiful Peacock Room was painted by James A. McNeill Whistler during late 1876 and early 1877. The entire room is decorated in oil colour and gold on wood, leather and canvas, its Orientalist theme crowned by Whistler's painting The Princess from the Land of Porcelain. The Peacock Room is … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORE, Robert Jasper.
London, Henry S. King, 1877. 8vo. Original green pictorial cloth, blocked in gilt and black; pp. xii, 272. 32 (advertisements), with wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, one folding lithographic map, wood-engraved plate and several illustrations in the text; cloth a little marked, one corner bumped, a few pages with light spotting. Scarce first edition; presentation copy, inscribed From the Author on half-title. Published two years before the Berlin Conference which aimed at sorting out the unruly remnants of the Ottoman Empire on the Balkans and based on the English liberal politician's tour to Bulgaria, which was in unrest and insurrectionists, some supported by Russian circles, made his sojourn rather interesting. More reports on the customs of Bulgarians, their economics, agriculture and relation to the Turkish masters, the Turkish rulers and their administration, who had brutally suppressed the uprising in central Bulgaria in May. The American Roberts College in Istanbul had been the channel for information about the events to the West, and More investigated himself what was going on in a part of the world almost completely unknown to the British. The map shows the region around Plovdiv.

Cameron had begun his career in the Navy and served in the Red Sea in the 1860s in order to suppress the slave trade, where he learned Swahili and some Arabic. In about 1870 'Cameron was appointed to the steam reserve at Sheerness, from where he began an active campaign to convince the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) to send him as part of a search expedition to find David Livingstone in central Africa. He was not chosen to participate on the expedition under L. S. Dawson that the RGS eventually sent, but the news that Henry Morton Stanley had found Livingstone caused that expedition to be abandoned even before it left Bagamoyo, on the east African coast. This proved a boon to Cameron, who, after continuing to offer his services to the RGS, was finally selected to lead a further expedition to find Livingstone … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is interesting that his book, Spinal Disease and Spinal Curvature, was written and first published while he was visiting in England in 1877. . . . In 1877 Sayre was a delegate from the American Medical Association to the British Medical Congress, held in Manchester, England. His fame in the treatment of spinal disease had preceded him, and he was asked to lecture and give demonstrations of his methods of treating tuberculosis of the spine and scoliosis in the leading surgical centers in Great Britain and Ireland. . ." "The patient was literally suspended by an overhead traction apparatus attached to a specially constructed chin and occiput halter. Only his toes touched the ground, and this was permitted just enough to avoid serious discomfort. While under this severe traction, a snugly fitted plaster of Paris jacket was applied. Later lateral traction bands were added to the suspended body according to the nature of the deformity, and the plaster applied around them. These bands were removed before the finishing layer was applied" (Bick, Source Book of Orthopaedics, pp. 434-35). … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Quatre volumes in-12 (151x88 mm), frontispice, (4)iv-352 pages / (4)-283-(1) pages / (4)-335-(1) pages / (4)-327-(1) pages Dos légèrement passés. . Bel exemplaire. [Click Below for Full Description]

"'Arab Art', however, is more than a monument to the author's tenacity, skill, and devotion. For the historian of architecture, it is a precise source, a unique documentary record [...] On an entirely different level, Prisse d'Avennes has provided today's architects, designers, artists, and illustrators with some of the finest examples of measured drawings, pattern details, and illustrations of selected aspects of the built environment of a medieval Islamic city. But 'Arab Art' is not merely an exercise in architectural description. Prisse d'Avennes writes about and records in the plates art forms ranging … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, Boulevards, 46 etchings - Martial, Adolphe-P.:
Paris, Imprimerie de Baillet, 1877. circa 44,4 x 33,5 (binding)., 46 etchings (11,3 x 16,2 to 14,3 x 24,3 cm) mounted on large leaves of heavy paper. Contemporary brown Morocco with richly gilt spine, covers and fore-edges, gilt arms on both covers (binding by Gelz-Niedrée) Bénézit VIII, 446 (see A.M. Potement). Rare suite of etchings by Adolphe Théodore Jules Martial Potémont (1828-1883), who had studied with Léon Cogniet and Brissot de Warville. Originally only 20 views were published with texts by Saulnat and others. We can trace series of up to 45 etchings - here there are 46! Most have a description in pencil, the title is also signed and has the information "tiré à 5 (9?) exemplaires, no 2". This is obviously number 2 of a very small edition printed for a few collectors. The suptuous binding by Gelz-Niedrée (cf. Helwig II, 175) has been made for a British aristocrat (a standing lion to the left under three horseshoes with the motto "pro legibus et regibus" - possibly the Wilson family). Among the beautiful views are several bookshops, cafes, hotels, passages etc. Walter Benjamin writes about Martial in his "Stadt-Bild im Wandel". - Nice and clean, the magnificent binding with small scratches or a little rubbed, but very decorative. MARY LINCOLN
London, 1877. No binding. Very Good. Signed Book. ""Mary Lincoln. / 1878,"" in her copy of Charles Duke Yonge, The Life of Marie Antoinette Queen of France, 2d rev. ed. (London: Hurst and Blackett, 1877), xvi, 432 pp., 8vo. bound in tooled purple cloth boards with titled spine. A carte-de-visite portrait of Mary Lincoln has been affixed to the front free endpaper. ""she bore her accumulated miseries with a serene resignation, an intrepid fortitude, a true heroism of soul, of which the history of the world does not afford a brighter example."" Historical BackgroundMary Lincoln likely identified with the guillotined French queen's plight. Their words (whether truly said or not) and their intentions were frequent targets of abuse in the press. The press of their respective days viewed both as spendthrifts and harshly questioned their motives, attacking Marie Antoinette's commitment to the welfare of the French people (""let them eat cake""), and Mary Lincoln's loyalty to the Union in light of her southern familial ties.Perhaps Mary Lincoln drew comfort and inspiration from Yonge's closing tribute to his royal subject, quoted above. An incredible association copy, acquired and inscribed by Mary Lincoln while she was living in France.Mary Lincoln (1818-1882) was born into the prominent Todd family in Lexington, Kentucky. Educated at female academies and boarding schools, she learned to speak French fluently and also studied literature, dance, drama, and music. She was very well-educated for her time, place, and gender. In November 1842, she married Abraham Lincoln in Springfie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Utagawa, Yoshitora
Yokohama: Okura Magobei, 1877. Three-part coloured woodblock print (not attached, each part with printed artist's name stamp 'Yoshitora ga'), together ca. 35,5x73,5 cm. Minor residue of the old glue on the left and right extremities of each leaf, otherwise the print is in very good condition. Attractive Yokohama print with a colourful scene of the launch of hot air balloons at the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy in Tsukiji, Tokyo. On the left part of the triptych is shown the American embassy (which is historically correct as it was located in the foreign settlement of Tsukiji in 1874-1980); the embassy has an American flag waving above, and two officials and several ladies are watching the launch from the porch. The launching of the balloons is shown in timeline: on the far right the balloon has just lifted above the ground, and the central part depicts two balloons already high in the sky; all three balloons are decorated with Japanese flags. The scene is fictitious and is a slightly changed version of an earlier print by the same artist, showing ''Launching of Balloons in Philadelphia during the First Japanese Diplomatic Mission to America'' (Yokohama: Shimizuya Naojirô, 1867). ''The architecture rendered here appears to be based not on pictures of America but of India, specifically buildings in Agra. Japanese artists, confused about the localities of architecture portrayed in Western illustrations, often produced incongruous representations of foreign lands'' (Yonemura, Yokohama Prints, no. 67). SCHMIDT, Johannes.
Dean II, pp. 405-407, cf. H. Ueda, Physiology and ecology of fish migration, p. 82. Huge volume containing an important collection of articles and papers on fish and especially eels, by the Danish biologist Ernst Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933), probably all his papers published in this period. Schmidt is best known for his findings on the migration patterns and breeding places of the eel, which he researched during various Danish expeditions in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. He also, accidently, caught the first leptocephalus larva outside the Mediterranean Sea, which are also discussed in many of the papers. The book opens with a general title-page Havundersøgelser (Ocean studies), followed by a portrait, a letter and all the articles. Most of them are written in English, although a few are in Danish, German or French. Discussed in the articles are eels and their larvae, cod, halibut, sun-fishes and other fish, and one deals with various turtle species in the Danish West Indies. Many of the articles include illustrations in text, folding plates, maps and/or tables, showing migration routes, a fish's growth stages etc. Full list of contents available on request.Browned throughout, some articles have frayed or slightly torn margins or dog ears. Oskar Ursinus (1877-1952), pionnier de l'aviation allemande.
Oskar Ursinus (1877-1952), pionnier de l'aviation allemande. Photographie originale dédicacée à Georges Abrial (1898-1970), pionnier de l'aviation française. 15,9*23,9cm. Shaffrath, Paul
(), 1877. 83 letters from Paul Shaffrath, along with 2 pieces of related ephemera and 2 photographs. Paul Shaffrath (1877-1961) was a long time Seattle lawyer who moved to Seattle in 1906 looking to establish himself on the West Coast. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States with his family circa.1885. Their home became Waterbury, Connecticut. Shaffrath graduated from Exeter Academy in New Hampshire before graduating from Yale University (1904) and Yale Law School (1906). The letters in this collection are written to Maria Louise Brown, Shaffrath's fiance. Louise Brown (1880-1939) was from Pittsfield, New Hampshire and graduated from Mt. Holyoke college in Massachusetts in 1905. During the time of this correspondence, Miss Brown is teaching high school at Presque Isle, Maine (1906-07) and West Springfield, Massachusetts (1907-08). [Approximately 100 love letters that Miss Brown writes to Shaffrath, 1906-1908, are included]. After a cross country train trip from New England to California, where his brother Max lives, Shaffrath travels up to Seattle where he makes contact with some old Yale friends, namely Donald McDonald and George Albin. Following a brief job search, McDonald introduces Shaffrath to Austin E. Griffiths. Austin Griffiths (1863-1952) at this time is the head of a small, but high profile Seattle law firm and is on his way towards a long life in the public affairs of the city. Between 1913 and 1934, Griffiths at various times served as city councilman, chief of police, judge and school board member. Shaffrath's letters give an insider's view … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kansas
[Lecompton, Lawrence, Topeka, Leavenworth, and the "bogus legislature" from Washington], 1877. Fourteen separate volumes, comprising fifteen territorial and state legislative sessions, one volume of the laws of the "bogus legislature," and the first House Journal after Statehood. Paginated variously, some volumes with institutional rubberstamps and bookplates. Otherwise, texts are clean, with bindings in various conditions: some with loosened or detached sheep covers, others in intact sheep or 20th century cloth bindings. Overall Very Good. The Territorial years in Kansas were a prelude to Civil War; Free State and Slave State factions struggled violently for control of the territorial government. Special attention, for example, is paid to the crime of burning down houses in the nighttime, particularly with persons inside. The Legislature passed "An Act to Prevent and Punish Armed Invasions from or into this Territory," designed to deter the pro-slavery Missouri Border Ruffians from causing trouble. A Memorial to Congress sought help in defeating those "marauding parties, that robbed and plundered the settlers." Another Act "forever prohibited" slavery. Territorial Governor Medary vetoed it, but it became law when the Legislature, by a two-thirds majority, overrode him. We also offer the earliest laws of the State of Kansas which, after seven years of strife and turmoil, entered the Union as a Free State in late January 1861 under its 1859 Wyandott Constitution, which prohibited slavery. The power of the Slave States to block its admission had finally been broken by the … [Click Below for Full Description]
