Alexander Wilson, Charles Bonaparte
New York: J.W. Bouton, 1877. See description. The three volume set for sale is American Ornithology: or The Natural History of the Birds of The United States by Alexander Wilson and Prince Charles Lucian Bonaparte - The Illustrated Notes and Life of Wilson by Sir William Jardine, in three volumes, New York: J.W. Bouton, 706 Broadway, 1877. An exceptional three volume work beginning with the Life of Wilson, then covering the American Birds in alphabetical order. The color plates showing each species are especially nice with great detail and bright colors. The volumes are in relatively good condition with some wear to the covers and top and bottom of the spines. Volume three has the most wear to it's cover. Some of the pages show age spotting, mostly at the front and backs of the books and occasionally within. Volume three shows the most spotting. (Please see the photos). Beautiful color illustrations (100 plates in all) make this a wonderful three volume set of Wilson's American Birds. Thanks for looking and check out out my other listings.

Dickens, Charles
Boston: James R. Osgood & Company, 1877. Reprint of the extremely rare privately printed edition of 1851. 96pp. 1 vols. 24mo. According to Eckel, "there are only three known copies traceable" of the original edition of this little farce which Dickens wrote with Mark Lemon, editor of Punch, for the Guild of Literature and Art, and that the pamphlet from which this reprint was made was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is an exceptionally fine copy of the reprint which is, in itself, becoming very scarce. Eckel, pp. 165-66. Full olive-green morocco, gilt cornerpieces of three-leaf clover, gilt spine, raised bands, gilt turn-ins with floral sprays, t.e.g., by WOSFORD. Fine copy.

Beadle, J. H.
Cinncinnati, Philadelphia, Chicago: Jones Brothers & Co., [1877]. Hardcover. It is an exciting account of seven years travel and adventures in the far west. An amazing narrative by Beadle, who traveled "to tell the exact truth about the country west of the Mississippi." With fascinating details about every aspect of the trip, from the people they met, the weather, terrain, and much more. He writes disapprovingly about the Mormons and movingly about the death of Custer. Bound in original reddish brown cloth with ornate black designs to front and back covers as well as spine. The title on the front board is black with a gilt background. Pictured in gilt is a man from the wild west as well as a cow and pig. Bumping and light chips to corners of boards and spine. Otherwise in very good condition. Interior pages show slight aging, and front and back hinges loose from the weight of the book. Black and white illustrations throughout and a fold-out color map of the Indian nations in the new world. Map is fine. 624 pages. In very good condition. AMHIST/070710. Very Good.

Richmond, VA: 1877. One of the more important agricultural magazines in the South, The Southern Planter was begun in 1841 and ran until 1867 until it merged with The Farmer. With many pages of farming advertisements --mowers, pigs, guano, and the like. Issues are uncommon -- to get an entire year's run in the original wrappers is especially nice. A revealing picture of agrarian life in the South at the end of the Reconstruction period. With frontispiece portraits.

Anna Sewell
Jarrold and Sons, 1877. The Autobiography of a Horse. Translated from the Original Equine. Published by Jarrold and Sons, London; 1877. First Edition, First Printing. Extremely rare in condition such as this. Highly collectible. Very Good + condition This is a lovely, collectible copy of this extremely rare first edition of Anna Sewell s only publication. She completed the novel, in spite of her ill health and sold it to her mother s publishers for £40, who published it on 24 November 1877 when she was 57. She wrote it for those who worked with horses with the aim being to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses (Mrs Bayly, 272) and it has gone on to become one of the most cherished children s classics. Bound in the original red cloth binding with gilt and black design [variant of Carter s B binding]. Engraved frontispiece. Preserved in a Fine red morocco folding case. This is an excellent example of this much-loved children's first edition and the boards are smart and in lovely conditions, depicting the horse's head on the front. There are just some minor signs of ageing, as might be expected on a book of this age. The hinges are weakening a little and there is some wear to the corners, edges and spine. There is some minor rubbing to the boards. Apart from these small signs of age, the binding is in excellent condition. Inside, the pages are remarkably clean and bright, with just some small signs of foxing and toning to the edges. A few page corners are creased where they have been folded and there are a couple of faint pencil marks to the endpa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mark Twain
London: Chatto and Windus, 1877. First Thus . Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No jacket - as issued. 20 x 14 (8" x 5.5"). True Williams. THE NOVEL: This classic relates a small-town boy's pranks and escapades with timeless humor and wisdom. In addition to his everyday stunts (searching for buried treasure, trying to impress the adored Becky Thatcher), Tom experiences a dramatic turn of events when he witnesses a murder, runs away, and returns to attend his own funeral and testify in court. The story is set in the 1840s in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived as a boy. Originally a commercial failure the book ended up being the best selling of any of Twain's works during his lifetime. The novel has elements of humor, satire and social criticism; features that later made Mark Twain one of the most important authors of American literature. Truman W. "True" Williams was an American artist known as the most prolific illustrator to Mark Twain's books and novels and was the first to visually portray such characters as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He was also a notorious drunk, which slowed his work and made him unreliable. PUBLISHING DETAILS: First illustrated edition, published by Chatto & Windus of London in 1877. 339 pages, plus 32 page publisher's catalogue. Size: 20 x 14 cms (8" x 5.5"). Weight: 647g (1.4 pounds). CONDITION: I would rate this as very good commensurate with its age. The book has been neatly rebacked, with the original spine laid over (see photo). The covers are sound overall, with a little a … [Click Below for Full Description]
