Notes on Psychology from Lectures Given by . . . Published for Private Circulation Only.

      n. p.,, Princeton, N. J.: 1877 - 8vo, contemporary half calf and cloth sides, v, [1], 121 pages interleaved with blanks, printed final exam questions tipped in. A scarce detailed outline of the prominent Princeton educator and college president's lectures. McCosh (1811-1894) marked something of a transition from the Old Psychology to the New Psychology. With the ink ownership signature of W. G. Emery, Jr., Princeton class of 1879, on the front paste-down and the title page, with numerous notes (some critical of McCosh) in ink and pencil to the blanks and text throughout--including occasional notes putting the class work into context: "Last lecture of '79's Junior Year - June 5th, 1878." The printed sheets with exam questions for the Junior Exam on Dec. 10, 1877 as well as the final exam for June 12, 1878 are tipped in, as is an early instance of stencil or other mechanical duplication--a leaf of autograph facsimile in aniline purple dated April 10, 1878 posing four sample exam questions, and a fairly early example of use of this reproduction technology. Matthew Gault Emery, Jr. (1855-1887) was a classmate of Woodrow Wilson and had been an attorney in Washington, D. C. Neatly rebacked, with the original spine laid down; somewhat rubbed; a good, sound copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

THE SOUTHERN PLANTER AND FARMER DEVOTED TO AGRICULTURE, HORTICULTURE, AND RURAL AFFAIRS [12 ISSUES, 1877]

Richmond, VA 1877 - One of the more important agricultural magazines in the South, The Southern Planter was begun in 1841 and ran until 1867 until it merged with The Farmer. With many pages of farming advertisements --mowers, pigs, guano, and the like. Issues are uncommon -- to get an entire year's run in the original wrappers is especially nice. A revealing picture of agrarian life in the South at the end of the Reconstruction period. With frontispiece portraits.

HAILING'S CIRCULAR. Volumes I and II (all published, complete in 24 numbers).

Cheltenham: Thomas Hailing, The Oxford Printing Works, 1877-1889. Two volumes. 10 x 12 1/2. Frontis portrait of Ben Franklin, (8), 113, (3);frontis portrait of A. V. Haight, (8), 139, (2) pages. Original publisher's decorated cloth over beveled boards, fancy endpapers, all edges gilt. Light wear to bindings, about fine. A "typographic artist," Hailing devised this elaborate specimen of self-promotion for his customers. The Circular sought to educate them about type faces and good design & printing, and argued the merits of ornamental printing. The Circular's popularity within the printing community, however, turned the Circular into a full-fledged trade journal. Hailing initiated a subscription fee and took display ads (all of which he designed). Each issue was elaborately printed, in numerous colors and gold. The Queen's Jubilee number is printed entirely in gold. Each number is filled with news, reviews of other Journals, and technical articles (with much on the American scene), and strove to make connections among printers on both sides of the Atlantic. The International Printers' Specimen Exchange was Hailing's brain-child. Demand for early numbers of the Circular caused some to be reprinted--presumably from standing type. The present volumes contain two reprints. Volume I, no. 1 has a slug at the end reading "third edition 1880." The slug on Volume I, no. 2 is "second edition 1882." Despite the large number printed, Hailing's Circular is very uncommon.

The Sculpture Gallery - Sir Lawrence (Lourens) Alma-Tadema.

Prijs: ?2.750,- (incl. lijst).

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1877 - 1877 Original Wisden Rebound with Covers

This 1877 Wisden was rebound a little time ago in brown boards with a green leather spine and corners. The original wrappers have been preserved and are in excellent, unrestored, clean condition. There are are one or two small marks to the front and rear boards. The spine has the title and year in gilt and an old owner's initials at the base of the spine. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition. The wrappers are complete, unrestored with just the odd tiny mark. The remaining contents are complete, original, unmarked and in fine condition. I suspect that the book was rebound quite some time ago and as a result the original contents and wrappers have been brilliantly preserved. A really nice example.

(Chadenat, 2085. Leclerc, 1115-1118 et 2528). Reliure légèrement frottée. Bel exemplaire, très frais, bien relié, non rogné.         DALMATIA, CROATIA: DALMACIJA NACRTAO I NARISAO JU J.J. PAULINY U BE?U. NAKLADOM ALBRECHTA I FIEDLERA U ZAGREBU.

Zagreb: Albrecht & Fiedler, []. 1877 - Chromolithograph on 12 sheets (Complete), uncut and un-joined (Very Good, splendid chromolithography, marginal chipping and various marginal tears, a few hairline tears just entering image but with no loss, some wear and minor creasing along old centrefolds of sheets, all tears closed on verso with archival tape), each sheet (with blank margins): 49 x 62 cm (19 x 24.5 inches), if all sheets joined would form a map approximately 140 x 240 cm (55 x 94.5 inches). An extremely rare and colossal wall map of Dalmatia (1.4 x 2.4 metres), printed by a resplendent technique of chromolithography, designed by the Austro-Hungarian cartographer Jacob Josef Pauliny and printed in Zagreb by Albrecht & Fiedler. This colossal 12-sheet wall map showcases all of Dalmatia in spectacular detail, being the largest map of the region we have even seen (1.4 x 2.4 metres / 4.5 x 8 feet). Designed by the prominent Austro-Hungarian military engineer Jacob Josef Pauliny, and predicated on the latest official surveys, the map was chromolithographed using a most resplendent technique and issued in Zagreb by the leading publisher Albrecht & Fiedler. Its scope extends along the Adriatic, from just beyond Zadar, in the north, all the way down to Kotor (Montenegro), in the south, with the major centres of Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik in between. In the interior, the map’s scope extends inland to include the southern two thirds of Bosnia & Herzegovina, including Sarajevo, going as far east as ?a?ak, Serbia. The map is predicated on the latest Austro-Hungarian government surveys, which, during this time employed amongst the most advanced scientific techniques in the world. The map’s chromolithography employs an exquisite palate of colours to represent the varied topography and heavily indented, island-strewn coastline of Dalmatia. Croatian toponymy is employed throughout the map, and its legend (lower left corner) explains the host of symbols used to identify cities, towns and villages of various sizes; regional administrative centres; as well as the locations of castles, churches, mosques, monasteries, post offices, rural guesthouses and mines. Also noted are major roads, railways and railway stations. The map also grants sophisticated information on land use, including farmland and forests, as well as various types of topographical and fluvial features. While the map is undated, its appearance in a list of newly published maps in the 1878 edition of Petermann’s Mitteilungen confirms the date of issue as 1877. Historical Context - Dalmatia is a region of stunning natural beauty and cultural wealth, occupying a rugged coastal region along the Adriatic, the nexus for a variety of different cultures since ancient times. Split was famously the birthplace and frequent home of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (244–312 AD), and for centuries Dalmatia played a central role in the Pan-Mediterranean economy. From 1358 to 1808 the southern part of Dalmatia, centred on Dubrovnik, was the independent state of the Republic of Ragusa, an immensely wealthy maritime trading power, generally allied to the Ottoman Empire. Most of the rest of Dalmatia, was part of the Republic of Venice, and while also thriving on seaborne trade, had to continuously fight epic battles for survival against the Ottomans, who occupied Bosnia, the borders of which lay only short distance inland. Venice and Ragusa dominated Dalmatia until the Napoleonic Wars, when the region was taken over by Napoleon Bonaparte’s legions. It became part of the French Province of Illyria. Following the wars, at the Congress of Vienna (1815), Dalmatia, along with the rest of the Croatian lands was given to the Austrian Habsburg Empire. Under Austrian rule, Dalmatia played a critical role in the development of the Empire’s rapidly rising international maritime economic and military presence. In particular, a large percentage of the sailors in the Austrian Navy, as well as the staff of the globally prominent shipping line Austr

Codice libreria 116360.

Tri sily. Publichnoe chtenie. (Three Forces; A Public Reading.)

Moscow: M. Katkov,, 1877. Octavo (222 × 150 mm), pp. 16. Original printed paper wrappers. Housed in a black cloth rounded-spine slipcase and chemise by the Chelsea Bindery. Small circular library label to front wrapper, oval library stamp to blank portion of First and last leaves. Wrapper largely split along spine, but still holding, front wrapper and First leaf a little crumpled at head, with a short tear but no loss, trace of library label and shelfmark to front wrapper; a very good copy. Scarce first edition of the Russian philosopher, theologian, poet, pamphleteer and literary critic Vladimir Soloviev's rousing lecture, "Three Forces", read to the Society of Amateurs of Russian Literature in April 1877. "In the academic year 1876–7 Soloviev returned to teaching and worked on a second book, The Philosophical Principles of Integral Knowledge. Before the year was over, however, he resigned his academic post and moved to St Petersburg … In the light of his later career Soloviev's move can be seen as a step towards the lifestyle which suited him best, that of an independent scholar and publicist. Soloviev picked a good time to begin his publicistic career. Early in 1877 Russia declared war on the Ottoman empire in response to Turkish violence against Orthodox Christians in the Balkans. For the first time since the end of the Crimean War (1856), the Eastern Question returned to the center stage of European politics and and lent new urgency to the issue of Russia's historical mission … Hitching religious philosophy to Russian messianism … his thesis was as simple as it was bold. The world is dominated by two opposed, but equally flawed, religious principles: the Islamic or oriental principle of 'the inhuman God,' a formula justifying universal servitude, and the modern European principle of 'the godless human individual,' a formula validating 'universal egoism and anarchy.' The conflict between these principles can only end in a vicious circle. Fortunately for humanity there is a country, Russia, where East and West meet and transcend their spiritual division in a higher religious principle: bogochelovechestvo, the humanity of God. As history's 'third force' Russia is destined to blaze the path not just to Constantinople but to the universal, divine-human cultural synthesis of the future." (Paul Valliere, Modern Russian Theology: Orthodox Theology In A New Key, p. 114). "The great Russian religious philosopher V. Solov'ev, wrote about the influence of the religious philosophy of Islam on the cultural history of Western countries. He said that in the development of the history of humanity there are three forces: the first would like to subdue humankind to God; the second would skip 'the unity of the world' and give freedom to the individual form of life; the third would reconcile the unity of God with individual freedom. In the modern world, according to Solov'ev, these forces exist in three historical cultures: the first is the Arabian East, the second is Western civilization, and the third is Slavonic." (Abdusamedov Anvar, "The Place of Islamic Culture in Social Progress", Spiritual values and social progress, Uzbekistan philosophical studies, 1, p. 70).

Buenos Ayres: Calla Derecho, Imprenta de Razon,. 1877. original green cloth, front panel ruled in black, spine panel stamped in black and gold, rear panel ruled in blind, chocolate-brown coated endpapers.. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, some scattered foxing and. soiling, mostly to preliminary and terminal leaves, several text. leaves age-darkened, especially pages 216-217, lacks front fly leaf,. still a tight, very good copy. A very scarce book.(#149618). First edition. Title leaf is a cancel and the imprint is evidently fictitious. Title leaf verso records copyright holder as "Elton R. Smilie." Lyle Wright, American Fiction 1876-1900, records the other issue of this book (the DLC copy) with imprint "Cambridge: Printed at the Riverside Press, 1877" (this variant title leaf is also a cancel). Eccentric lost race novel which provides a report of a German expedition exploring the headwaters of the Paraguay River and its tributaries. The expedition finds a vast walled city, "Heraclea," which was founded millennia earlier by ancient Romans and is now populated by their descendants. Living nearby are other races, including tiny people who vary from dwarf to insect size, called collectively the "Manatitlans." These ancient people have long dwelled in harmony near and with the Romans and are described as having evolved from the intestinal parasites of the god Hercules. The book includes some heavy- handed satire of European society and some utopian touches, but its focus is a discussion of "Manatitlan" society (which has existed for 11,000 years), especially its educational system.
