The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species

London: John Murray 1877 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's green cloth, lettered in gilt, brown coated endpapers. About near fine, some rubbing to the spine ends, rear corners bumped, spine lightly starting inside covers, a few faint spots to the first few leaves of text, otherwise sturdy binding. From the botanical libraries of Swedish professors, Nils Svedelius and Nils Fries Swedish with their bookplates and stamps to front pastedown and title page, and Svedelius' signature to first blank. A very bright copy. The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species is a presentation and analysis of Darwin's research on evolution in plants. Specifically, he focuses on heterostyly, or plants that bear flowers with differently sized sex organs - a highly-evolved trait developed to encourage crossbreeding. The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species is a continuation of Darwin's exploration of his that cross-pollinated plants would produce biologically superior offspring to those of self-pollinated plants, which he theorized in On the Origin of Species (1859) and demonstrated in The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable Kingdom (1876).         Wien 1858 - 1933 München). Auf der Dorfstraße. Öl auf Holz. Um 1900. Unten links signiert. 13 x 17,5 cm.

A great photographic rarity, Gustav Riemer's self-published album of original photographs from the voyage of the SMS Hertha to the Far East, the Pacific and Australia includes many important ethnographic images, among them a series of portraits of Aboriginal groups taken at King George Sound, Western Australia in 1877. Teplitz : G. Riemer, 1878. Folio, original embossed cloth boards decorated and lettered in gilt (rubbed), spine with small loss at tail; brass clasp; silk lining papers; dedication leaf, title leaf, pp [8], [2], followed by [63] leaves with 343 mounted albumen print photographs in various formats ranging from 90 x 90 mm to 200 x 150 mm, all with printed numbers and captions; the leaves and photographs are in fine condition throughout. Gustav Adolph Riemer (1842-1899) worked as paymaster on the Imperial German Navy corvette SMS Hertha on its 1874-77 voyage to the Far East, Australia and the Pacific. A self-taught photographer, Riemer took with him on the voyage a large-format wooden camera with a bellows extension and a Petzval lens, with which he created this extremely important visual record of the places visited. Among these were Madeira, Brazil, Singapore, Borneo, Sulu Islands, Philippines, China (Hong Kong, Canton, Amoy), Japan, Bonin, Micronesia (Marianas, Caroline Islands, Palau), East Siberia, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand and Australia. Riemer's photographs include many significant ethnographical images, the most important of which are probably the six of Aboriginal groups taken at King George Sound (Albany) in Western Australia (nos. 326-331), together with the extensive series of Micronesian peoples (nos. 198-240) taken prior to the Carolines and Marianas coming under formal German colonial administration, and numerous exceptional views and portraits taken in Samoa and Tonga. Riemer also carried a stereoscopic camera, and although his stereoviews were separately published by Stiehm in Berlin, these images are also included in the album as 'single' views. Only two examples of Riemer's highly important album are held in Australian collections (National Library of Australia and State Library of New South Wales).

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, And What Alice Found There

Macmillan 1877 - Fortieth thousand, i.e. a later issue of the first edition as per Williams Madan Green 84. Publisher's special deluxe binding of white textured paper covered boards to imitate vellum, with gilt lettering and vignettes, in the exceptionally rare unprinted original lilac dustwrapper. All edges gilt. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the half title, "May Forshall from the Author / Dec 3. 1877" A fine copy with exceptionally clean white covers and bright gilt, just a couple of trivial marks to the edges. Internally fresh with tight hinges. Two pin holes to the front endpaper and a faint mark to the edge of the preliminary pages. Dustwrapper rather worn, with small chips to the spine ends and corners and a larger chip to the corner of the back panel. An exceptional copy. Included with this book is an original carte-de-visite mounted photograph of Mary Forshall taken by Carroll, numbered by him (2485) in violet ink on the reverse. Black and white illustrations throughout by John Tenniel. Mary Forshall (known as May) was the daughter of the Highgate physician Francis Hyde Forshall, an acquaintance of Charles Dodgson's. Dodgson recalls his first meeting with May in a diary entry of 27 November 1877, "Dined with Sampson, to meet Dr. Forshall with his sister, etc., and May Forshall, a nice child of 10." In the 1 December 1877 entry, Dodgson mentions May "came to be photographed" at 11am, an appointment which was repeated two days later, with the result that Carroll took, "5 negatives, of which 2 failed". It was on the second meeting that Dodgson presented one of his newly received copies of Through the Looking Glass, in a specially commissioned presentation binding. Dodgson took an obsessive interest in the production of all his books and would habitually order small quantities to be bound up in a variety of non-standard styles and hues for his own use, wanting to have a ready supply of special bindings, which differed form the shop bought version, to be used as presentation gifts. Of these styles, the white binding seems to have been the one chosen by Dodgson for his most favoured presentations. It is also a style of binding which has fascinated latter day collectors. For the publication of The Hunting of The Snark, the year before this book, Dodgson had commissioned an array of coloured bindings including "20 bindings in white vellum and gold". This was changed to parchment style paper or cloth and gold, on economic grounds. Dodgson appears to have placed a similar order for both Alice (then in its sixth edition) and Through the Looking Glass, which were delivered late in 1877. They are now of the utmost scarcity, seldom appearing in commerce. When they do, they are usually in a poor or repaired state, as the fragile white boards were particularly prone to damage. In this case the presence of the original dustwrapper, itself probably a unique occurrence, has meant that the white binding has remained in exceptional condition.         The New Republic; or, Culture, Faith, and Philosophy in an English Country House.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1877. 2 vols, 8vo, original decorated gray cloth, gilt decorations and lettering. 36-page publisher's catalogue dated March 1877 in volume one. The first novel by William Hurrell Mallock, a famous Peacockian roman à clef, written while Mallock was an undergraduate at Oxford, which brings together under one roof several poets, philosophers, critics, and dilettantes to discuss the problems of religion, society and the arts. Many of the characters are thinly based on well-known persons, including Huxley, Ruskin, Carlyle, Arnold, Pater, Ouida, and Violet Fane (to whom the novel is dedicated). "The most successful conversation novel of the period . . . Mallock's epigrammatic satire on liberalism, radicalism and cant plays freely over the ensuing talk and talkers. It ends inconclusively with the half-hearted verdict that things are best as they are." - Sutherland, Victorian Fiction. Ink signature dated 1877 in the top margin of the title-page. Edges a little worn; hinges on volume one starting, but sound; very good copy.

BLACK BEAUTY: His Grooms and Companions. The Autobiography of a Horse. Translated from the Original Equine

Jarrold and Sons 1877 - First edition. Small 8vo. Original green cloth with decoration embossed in gilt and black, Carter's variant B. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on publication, "Mary and Catherine Sewell from their affectionate cousin, the Author, Christmas 1877." A very good copy with the front joint neatly repaired, lacking the front endpaper. Light wear to the spine ends and corners. Engraved frontispiece after C. Hewitt. A wonderful family association being a Christmas gift from Anna Sewell to her spinster cousins. Anna Sewell lived only a few months after the publication of her book making inscribed copies extremely uncommon. Confined to the home after a childhood accident, Anna first mentioned that she was writing Black Beauty in her journal on 6th November 1871. She wrote "I am writing the life of a horse, and getting dolls and boxes ready for Christmas". In December 1876 she wrote, "I am getting on with my little book 'Black Beauty'." By this time Anna was becoming more and more crippled and spent much of her time on a sofa writing in pencil, with her mother making a copy. She wrote "I have been confined to the house and to my sofa, from time to time, when I am able, been writing what I think will turn out a little book, its special aim being to induce kindness, sympathy and an understanding treatment of horses". Black Beauty was published at the end of 1877 and Anna lived just long enough to hear of its success. The book has a strong moral purpose and is said to have been instrumental in the abolition of the cruel practice of using the check rein. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

London: John Murray, , 1877. 2 volumes bound as one, octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to spine, gilt panelling to upper board, all edges gilt. Tinted engraved frontispiece to each, and 6 other similar plates in all, folding map. Edinburgh University prize copy with bookplate to the front pastedown and gilt supralibros, a little rubbed overall, some slight discolouration of the lower board, hinges repaired, text block lightly toned, but overall a very good copy. First edition. "In 1873 Major de Cosson, after wintering in Egypt, started for Suakin with his brother, the intention of the travellers being to seek for sport in the country described in Sir Samuel Baker's 'Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia', but meeting on the way with General Kirkham, of the Abyssinian Army, who was returning with a letter from Queen Victoria to King John of Abyssinia, they decided on visiting that monarch and his country. They visited Adowa, Gondar, and Lake Tana, near which they found King John established with his army" (RGS obituary). In an audience, de Cosson obtained a written promise from King John that he would endeavour to stop the slave trade in the country. Recalled to duty, he rode "with one Egyptian servant to Khartoum, and thence across the desert to Suakin, enduring considerable hardships on the way." He subsequently advised on the route of the Gordon Relief Expedition, and served at Tofrek "where his horse was shot under him." Czech notes that vol. I, "primarily dwells on their journey," but that vol. II contains accounts of the brothers' time at Lake Tana where they "enjoyed considerable sport after hippopotamus, with additional hunts after leopard, lion, and Gazelle.

Morgan knew and favorably impressed Charles Darwin; was a significant influence on Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels; and was cited favorably by Sigmund Freud. Born near Aurora, New York, Lewis Henry Morgan originally trained as a lawyer and practiced for 18 years in Rochester, often dealing with railroads. The expansion by these railroads through Upstate New York caused massive expropriations of native American lands and dislocations of native residents. As a result, beginning in the 1840's, Morgan became absorbed with Native Americans and their rights. Such concerns led him to make exhaustive studies of the Iroquois. (See his major ethnographic study: The League of the Ho-dé-no-sau-nee, or Iroquois, 1851). He also formed a social club of men interested in Iroquois affairs. (One suspects that some of the other signatories to this unique volume may have been early members of Morgan's fraternity, but more research in the archives of Rochester and related libraries is necessary.) Morgan continuously championed the welfare of tribes within the League of the Iroquois whose lands were being expropriated. Further encroachments then caused him to study another of their endangered tribal League, the Seneca. In particular, Morgan researched their kinship patterns and nomenclature. So profound was his knowledge, plus so successful were his efforts to protect their ancient tribal rights, that the Seneca tribe adopted him as one of their Sachems or wisemen. Morgan further pursued the kinship relationships of Amerindians into similar Asiatic forms. He concluded that Amerindians had originated in Asia. (See, Systems of Consanguinity and Affinity of the Human Family, 1871, which inaugurated the study of kinship systems as a fundamental organizing principal of preindustrial societies.) His influential studies led to his development of the theory of cultural evolution--in support and convergence with the work of Charles Darwin. (Darwin was also impressed by Morgan's study of the greatly endangered beaver, which confirmed the British scientist's analysis of the continuities between animals and humans.) From the beginning of the Civil War, Lewis Morgan served with distinction in the New York State Assembly (1861-68); followed by two years in the NY State Senate. One notes that among the co-signatories of this volume the presence of several former physicians who also served for the Union during the Civil War. Lewis Hery Morgan (1818-1881) is regarded as a--if not THE--principal founder of the modern schoool of ethnology, kinship studies, and scientific anthropology. (See also a recent edition of Morgan's work with an Introduction by anthropologist, Robin Fox.) In Ancient Society, the author elaborated a social evolutionary scheme which identified three main stages of human history: savagery, barbarism, and civilization. Each stage reflects a close correlation between technology, economic, and cultural achievements. His theory thus became a key foundation for Social Darwinism, though it should hardly be thus delimited. Through his comparisons of human institutions and discoveries, Morgan became convinced of mankind's unity of origin and of the similarity of human needs, aspirations, and accomplishments at comparable stages of development. He also did important work on monogenesis and the evolution of the human family. According to the author, the human race is "one is source, one in experience and one in progress." Morgan's work was enthusiastically endorsed and used by Mark and Engels--subsequently by Gordon S. Childs and Robin Fox--as supporting a evolutionary, social, and materialist interpretation of history. Howes M-803. Previous flourishing ink ownership marks of "Mr. N. [or possibly "H"] Peck / Rochester, N.Y. / Dec. 4, 1879." The Pecks were a well established and prominent family in Rochester. (One suspects, for example, that the 20th century actor, Gregory Peck, may have had distant connections to this owner.) Cloth is slightly faded with minor rubbing to extremities (most noticeably a bit of fraying to the upper and lower spine caps). The hefty volume is slightly shaken and the front endpapers and title page are somewhat loose. Internal joints have splits at pastedowns revealing the webbing but Not evidently affecting the sewing, so that the hinges are very good. Internally, very slight age toning to the otherwise clean, unspoiled pages. In what follows, I bracket what information I deem most probable for briefly identifying the notable individuals--all from Rochester--who signed with highly legible signatures beneath L[ewis] H[enry] Morgan on the free front endpaper opposite the title page of this first edition of Ancient Society: "L.H. Morgan" [Dr.] "E.M. Moore" [physician and father of Samuel P. Moore below] Robert Matthews [hardware merchant, b. ca.1843, Ireland, m. Elizabeth G., no children.] [Dr.] "Charles E.[verts] Rider" [born 26 May 1839 in New Haven, VT; attended Oberlin & Middlebury Colleges, the Univesity at Giessen, Ecole de Médicine, Paris, MD University of Vermont,1863; physician and surgeon. Professor of Pphtalamic and Diseases of the Ear, 1872-80. Pioneering expert of the Rochester Microscopical Society, one of the largest scientific organizations of its kind. The Microscopical Society was later folded into the Rochester Academy of Science in 1881. His son "Wheelock" also signed this important volume.] Porter Farley [very active in antislavery efforts and the Underground Railroad; then during the Civil War, a former Union Captain and hero of Little Round Top at Gettysburg; married to Susan; see: An Unvarnished Tale: The Public and Private Civilian Writings of Porter Farley, 140th NYVI] [Dr.] "M. L. Mallory" [later Chairman of the Committee on the American Microscopical Society] "J. H. Hopkins" [John H. Hopkins, b. 1843, married Martha P., daughter Esther A.Quaker lawyer] "J. H. Boucher" [Described as a "jobber" of the Rochester firm Mathews [var. "Mathers"] and Boucher. From one of his essays, Boucher appears also to have been a progressive economist profoundly interested in balancing the fruits of production, distribution, labor, and capital for "the Universal Prosperity of All Citizens of this Country." Possibly associated with Harvard University in 1888.] "F. P. Smith" [engineer and member of the American Society of Municipal Engineers] [Dr.] "S. P. Moore" [Samuel Prescott Moore, b. 3 Jan., 1854, physician son of Dr. E. M. Moore {above}] [Dr.] "Wheelock Rider" [born 1 June, 1863, in Vermont; son of Dr. Charles Edward--listed above--& Delia W. Doctor Wheelock, a smoker, died in 1927.] [Dr.] "Oscar Craig" [a physician, who with his wife, became very concerned about the welfare of epileptics, which caused him--or them both--to found Craig Colony for their care.] "William B. Lee" [attorney and member of the BAR] [Dr.] "Richard Curran" [born 1838 in Lenox, New York; a former Union military surgeon; married to Almira J. Craine; son. Arthur, b.1864; became a druggist at Curran & Goler after the Civil War and sold surgical instruments; very active in municipal afffairs.] Overall, an extremely remarkable SIGNED & ASSOCIATION copy by this major American scientist.

        Les oiseaux de la Chine.

      - Paris, Masson, 1877. In two volumes (text and atlas). Large 8vo (24.7 x 16.0 cm). Text: half-title, title, vii, 573 pp.; Atlas: 124 finely hand-coloured lithographed plates by Arnoul. Uniform near contemporary burgundy morocco over red buckram boards. Spines with five raised bands and gilt title. Top edges gilt.l A quite rare and important work on the (until then) very poorly known Chinese avifauna, by the "father" of Chinese zoology, Abbé Armand David (1826-1900) and the French professor of zoology and ornithologist Jean-Frédéric Émile Oustalet (1844-1905). The fine plates, drawn and lithographed by Arnoul, depict the birds' natural habitats. Nissen states: "probably the most important systematic monograph yet written on the birds of China". 807 species of birds are described in this book, of which 249 are supposed to be particular to China, including new taxa. Of the illustrator, Arnoul, little is known. Even Ronsil has no information on him, although Arnoul was responsible for many fine bird plates as an illustrator and as a lithographer. The atlas does not include the title and six preliminary pages. All the plates are present. Very light foxing and a small faint dampstain to the margins of only a few plates. In other copies the plates are often browned or age-toned, but here they are nearly all exceptionally clean and fresh. Loosely inserted: a Wheldon and Wesley invoice, dated 9 June 1989. A very good copy. Nissen IVB, 221; Ronsil, "Iconographie ornithologique", p. 111; Wood, 311; Zimmer, p. 159. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Notes on Psychology from Lectures Given by . . . Published for Private Circulation Only.

      n. p.,, Princeton, N. J.: 1877 - 8vo, contemporary half calf and cloth sides, v, [1], 121 pages interleaved with blanks, printed final exam questions tipped in. A scarce detailed outline of the prominent Princeton educator and college president's lectures. McCosh (1811-1894) marked something of a transition from the Old Psychology to the New Psychology. With the ink ownership signature of W. G. Emery, Jr., Princeton class of 1879, on the front paste-down and the title page, with numerous notes (some critical of McCosh) in ink and pencil to the blanks and text throughout--including occasional notes putting the class work into context: "Last lecture of '79's Junior Year - June 5th, 1878." The printed sheets with exam questions for the Junior Exam on Dec. 10, 1877 as well as the final exam for June 12, 1878 are tipped in, as is an early instance of stencil or other mechanical duplication--a leaf of autograph facsimile in aniline purple dated April 10, 1878 posing four sample exam questions, and a fairly early example of use of this reproduction technology. Matthew Gault Emery, Jr. (1855-1887) was a classmate of Woodrow Wilson and had been an attorney in Washington, D. C. Neatly rebacked, with the original spine laid down; somewhat rubbed; a good, sound copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

HAILING'S CIRCULAR. Volumes I and II (all published, complete in 24 numbers).

Cheltenham: Thomas Hailing, The Oxford Printing Works, 1877-1889. Two volumes. 10 x 12 1/2. Frontis portrait of Ben Franklin, (8), 113, (3);frontis portrait of A. V. Haight, (8), 139, (2) pages. Original publisher's decorated cloth over beveled boards, fancy endpapers, all edges gilt. Light wear to bindings, about fine. A "typographic artist," Hailing devised this elaborate specimen of self-promotion for his customers. The Circular sought to educate them about type faces and good design & printing, and argued the merits of ornamental printing. The Circular's popularity within the printing community, however, turned the Circular into a full-fledged trade journal. Hailing initiated a subscription fee and took display ads (all of which he designed). Each issue was elaborately printed, in numerous colors and gold. The Queen's Jubilee number is printed entirely in gold. Each number is filled with news, reviews of other Journals, and technical articles (with much on the American scene), and strove to make connections among printers on both sides of the Atlantic. The International Printers' Specimen Exchange was Hailing's brain-child. Demand for early numbers of the Circular caused some to be reprinted--presumably from standing type. The present volumes contain two reprints. Volume I, no. 1 has a slug at the end reading "third edition 1880." The slug on Volume I, no. 2 is "second edition 1882." Despite the large number printed, Hailing's Circular is very uncommon.

The Sculpture Gallery - Sir Lawrence (Lourens) Alma-Tadema.

Prijs: ?2.750,- (incl. lijst).
