Laughable lyrics: A Fourth Book of Nonsense Poems, Songs, Botany, Music

London: Robert John Bush, 1877. Square octavo; original maroon cloth, rebacked, recased; some loss of letters on front cover but a good copy nonetheless, with the final 4 pp. advertisements. Lear had written his first Book of Nonsense for the children of his patron the Earl of Derby in 1845. Laughable Lyrics, the fourth nonsense book, and 'last but not least' (Muir, p. 147) 'included some of the best manifestations of Lear's rhythmic gifts and his flair for the invention of words…' (Thwaite, p. 127). 'His work… provides an almost unique example of the perfectly matched text and picture… it was due to him that entertainment bulked larger than instruction in the late Victorian children's book' (Bland, p. 256).

Two Autographed Letters Signed and a Telegraph

Cairo, 1877. unbound. Archive of two autographed letters signed and one telegram by the British General nicknamed for his victory in Beijing. Both letters were written on the day of his arrival in Cairo, and all of these items relate to the building of the Sudan railroad, which would be used by the opposition Mahdi to kill Gordon in the course of defeating the British. The telegraph is 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, pencil with pen notations (faded), announcing his planned day of departure: "I leave on Thursday. Gordon. Suez." Cairo, February 2, 1877. The first autographed letter signed is 1 page on onionskin, 6.25 x 4.75 inches, headed by hand "Mo. 85 So Re" (pinholes in the upper left, one rust-stained), authorizing a payment "for arrears," probably a bribe to speed work, Cairo, February 18, 1877. The second autographed letter signed is 1 page on onionskin, 6.25 x 4.75 inches, headed by hand "Soudan Railway No. 86" (pinholes in the upper left, one rust-stained), charging the Bank of Egypt for railroad materials, Cairo, February 18, 1877. The telegraph is fragile and wrinkled; good condition. The letters are both in very good condition with faint creases and tiny pinholes.

BLACK BEAUTY. His Grooms and Companions. The autobiography of a Horse. Translated from the original Equine by Anna Sewell

Jarrold and Sons. London. No Date. (1877). Jarrold and Sons. London. No Date. (1877). FIRST EDITION. 8vo.(6.8 x 4.5 inches). Engraved frontis. 8 pages of publishers adverts at rear. A good copy in the rare Carter binding variant 'B'. Original publishers green cloth with front board showing the horses head facing right, stamped in black and with gilt reins, within a gilt and black floral and rustic design and the title stamped in black letters, the lettering expanding from the middle of each word. Rear board ruled in blind. This copy has been professionally re-cased and re-backed with a new matching plain green cloth spine. Original brown coated endpapers. Neat contemporary previous owners inscription on the front free endpaper. The edges are a little rubbed and the pages are thumbed and spotted with a few corners creased where they have been previously turned down but overall an acceptable copy of this scarce first edition in a rare binding variant. In his book, More Binding Variants in English publishing: 1820-1900, the Bibliographer John Carter describes three bindings. Binding A and B he suggests are "undoubted primaries, while C may be a simultaneous style or may be a later one". The third binding is "comparatively common" (due to changes in the text of volumes found in that binding many now think that it was actually only used on early reprints of the book), but "A and B are so rare that deductions are inevitably conjectural". It is now generally accepted that the A binding was used for presentation copies and that the B binding was used for the regular published first edition.

Fertilisation of Orchids (The Various Contrivances by which Orchids are Fertilised by Insects)

John Murray, London 1877 - PUBLISHING DETAILS: First printing of the second edition (revised) of Darwin's first book of evidence in support of 'Origin of Species'. Published by John Murray of London in 1877. 300 pages plus 32pp publisher's catalogue dated January 1876. Size; 19 x 13 cms (7.5" x 5"). Weight; 635g (22 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate this as very good. The original green cloth covers, with gilt titling to the spine, are generally sound and clean, with a little bruising to the extremities and a light scratch on the front (see photo). The binding remains generally tight and secure throughout. The text and wood engraving illustrations are generally clean, bright and free from foxing with just one or two freckles on the odd early page. There are 2 newspaper cuttings pasted to the prelims, which have offset on to the half title and title pages (see photo). All in all, this is a tidy early edition of a collectible Darwin title - at a price several hundred pounds below that of a first edition. THE BOOK: From Darwin's autobiography: 'On May 15th, 1862, my little book on the Fertilisation of Orchids, which cost me ten months' work, was published: most of the facts had been slowly accumulated during several previous years. During the summer of 1839, and, I believe, during the previous summer, I was led to attend to the cross-fertilisation of flowers by the aid of insects, from having come to the conclusion in my speculations on the origin of species, that crossing played an important part in keeping specific forms constant. I attended to the subject more or less during every subsequent summer. For some years before 1862 I had specially attended to the fertilisation of our British orchids; and it seemed to me the best plan to prepare as complete a treatise on this group of plants as well as I could, rather than to utilise the great mass of matter which I had slowly collected with respect to other plants.' Freeman on the second edition: 'In 1869, Darwin published a paper (No. 1748) which is an English version of some matter which was prepared for insertion in the first French translation of the book. This matter was incorporated in the second English edition of 1877. The text of this was considerably altered and the inserted Figure I is now incorporated. Its title is condensed by the omission of On and British and Foreign as well as the last phrase.' [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sylvia's Lovers and Mary Barton

78 - London - Smith, Elder and Co., 1877. 78 - London - Smith, Elder and Co., 1877 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two serious works of social concern by Elizabeth Gaskell in elegant decorative cloth bindings. Bound in green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. Two Volumes. On Mary Barton: When it was published in October 1848 Gaskell'sstate of the nation tale of Chartism, strikes, murder, and prostitution, misery and redemption prompted praise from concerned men as different as Samuel Bamford and Thomas Carlyle- ODNB. Sylvia's Lovers, which she felt was the saddest story she ever wrote, was eventually published in February 1863. A haunting, experimental mixture, its complex plot sets personal dramas and betrayals against wider debates about responsibility and torn loyalties: in business life, in the relation of family to state, and the nation to the people, even in the tension between divine and human law -ODNB. Condition: The text bindings are generally tight and firm. The hinges of Barton have failed and are seperate from the text block. The first leaf ofBarton is partially detached and the first few pages of Lovers are becoming partially detached. The inner hingesof Loversare somewhat strained. There is mild wear to the extremities, includingmildrubbing andbumping. Internally the pages have browning to the edges and intermittent spots. Overall the condition of Sylvia'sLovers is good and Mary Barton is fair..

London: Ward, Lock, and Tyler, No Date (1877). - ". Bulgarian atrocities, strength of the contending armies and navies; and topography of the death of war; with large map, portraits, and views of interesting localities." Original illustrated wraps. Size: 12.3 x 17.9cm. Pages: 144 + 2 (advertisements) collating complete with large folding map, and several illustrations in the text, including double-page and full page. The wraps are quite worn, but remain attractive with the colourful cartoon-like illustrations to the front. The paper to the spine is fragile with full loss to the bottom 5cm, and partial loss higher up. The wraps are quite tender, but holding. The binding is mostly secure, but tender in places. The pages are generally fine, lightly tanned with occasional spotting. The map is fine, neatly folded, and without tears. Very rare - Copac lists only one copy, held at Cambridge. Undated, but contemporary with the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War. Although this topical guidebook is concerned with the war specifically, it is concerned more broadly with the "Eastern Question" raised by the implications of the decline of the Ottoman Empire, and growing Russian territorial expansionism, This also covers "The Great Game", raising the issue of a possible invasion of India. From the opening pages: "We are now witnessing the commencement of what may be one of the greatest wars which have ever shaken the continent of Europe, if, indeed, it does not extend into Asia, beyond the present limits of the Turkish empire, and affect interest which may lead to action on the part of the Western Powers, now watching with anxiety the development of events." Aerial Navigation

London - Macmillan and Co, 1877. London - Macmillan and Co, 1877 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce first edition of this detailed investigation into aeronautics by an extraordinary character. Edited by his brother Robert Blachford Mansfield. With a preface by J. M. Ludlow. With illustrative figures in the text throughout. Binder's label of Spottiswoode and Co, London,to rear pastedown. Charles Blachford Mansfield (18191855), chemist and traveller. Vegetarian, teetotaller, and mesmerist, brilliant conversationalist, and eccentric, Mansfield possessed a personality which dazzled all who fell into his company. His works, published at various intervals after his death by his brother, Kingsley, and Maskelyne, are unfortunately mere fragments to which he had not added the finishing touch, yet each bore the unmistakable impress of a polymathic mind of the highest order. In 1848, after completing the chemistry course at the Royal College of Chemistry, Mansfield undertook, at the request of its director, A. W. Hofmann, a series of experiments which resulted in the fractional distillation of impure benzene, toluene, and xylene from coal tar, and the development of procedures for the large-scale conversion of benzene into nitrobenzene. He manufactured aniline for Hofmann's researches and helped him prepare scientific papers and reports. The extraction method, which he patented in May 1848 effectively laid the foundation of the European coal tar and dyestuffs industries. In September 1850 an account of a balloon inflating machine constructed in Paris led him to investigate aeronautics, and in the next few months (following correspondence with Sir George Cayley), he wrote his Aerial Navigation, an original and suggestive work that appeared posthumously in 1877. In addition, he published a Utopian fantasy on space travel in Fraser's Magazine. In the winter of 18512 he delivered a Royal Institution lecture course on the chemistry of metals, which apart from remarkable generalizations, contained strange triadic speculations concerning chemical classification which were published posthumously as A Theory of Salts in 1865, by which time the theory of chemical structure had superseded it. DNBCondition: Rebacked in cloth with original decorative cloth boards and spine laid over. Externally smart despite some rubbing to the original cloth. Library annotation to spine. The hinges have been reinforced. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean throughout, just one or two handling marks. Ink library stamp and annotations to title, as well as a library blindstamp.
