Abby Smith and Her Cows, with a report of the law case decided contrary to law

Hartford, Conn: [American Publishing Co.]. 1877. First Edition. 8vo, 94pp; buff printed wrappers. Frontispiece engraving of Miss Smith and her cows. The delicate wrappers are worn, but generally intact, spine starting to split with about 1" lost at each end, small hole at center of front wrapper at hinge about 1/2" x 1/4", closed tear about 1" at bottom, small hole on rear cover about 1/4" x 1/4", bottom corner of back wrapper chipped, ownership stamp on front wrapper along with "property of" in ink, repeated on page v of front matter, rear cover with two closed tears professionally restored, about very good. Inside front wrapper with ad for Julia Smith&#39;s translation of the Holy Bible, inside back wrapper with ads for other publications of American Publishing Company, back wrapper with ad for American Publishing Company soliciting agents, noting "Women who can devote time to the work, often make the best of canvassers."& Abby (1797-1878) and Julia Smith (1792-1886) were two of five daughters born to Zephaniah Hollister Smith, a minister, lawyer and farmer, and his wife Hannah Hadassah Smith, an accomplished astronomer. While the five daughters had little formal education, their home education was formidable including a number of languages (Latin, Greek and Hebrew, in the case of Julia, for instance, who became the first woman to translate the Bible into English in 1876). In 1873 the two elderly sisters, then in their 80s, lived on the family farm in Glastonbury, Connecticut tending their Alderney cows from which they made their own cheese and butter. They received notice from the tax collector that taxes for their farm as well as property owned by two widows in town had been increased. Curiously, only properties owned by women had been assessed higher taxes. The Smith sisters decided to attend the next town meeting; though Abby was allowed to speak, her pleas regarding the unfair tax increase were ignored. The sisters decided to refuse to pay the taxes. The town promptly auctioned off their beloved Alderney cows, though the sisters persuaded a friend to bid for them so the cows soon returned home. Abby and Julia continued to resist the unjust assessment against their farm, however. At the next town meeting, the sisters were not allowed to speak and this time the tax collector foreclosed on their farm for non- payment of taxes and auctioned it off. & The sisters sued the tax collector and as their suits were being adjudicated, Samuel Bowles of the Springfield, Massachusetts REPUBLICAN (the editor who first published Emily Dickinson&#39;s poetry) learned of their plight and took up their cause. Soon newspapers across the country were publishing accounts of how the Glastonbury town fathers first singled out two little old ladies for special taxes and then persecuted them when they raised the cry of &#39;No taxation without representation&#39;. Suffrage leaders such as Abby Foster Kelley, Isabella Beecher Hooker, Lucy stone and others weighed in on their behalf and the sisters found themselves invited to speak at suffrage gatherings and elsewhere. In January, 1878 Julia addressed the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections while in March Abby testified in Hartford before a committee of the Connecticut legislature. Eventually the sisters won their case, but not before the cows went up for auction two more times, making them national celebrities in their own right. Here Julia compiled everything related to the case: letters, speeches and newspaper accounts. A women&#39;s rights cause celebre that garnered national sympathy for the sisters and for the suffrage movement. NAW III, pp, 302- 304.         Sind Revisited: With Notices of the Anglo-Indian Army; Railroads; Past, Present and Future, etc:

London Richard Bentley & Son 1877 - First Edition. Original Grey-Mauve cloth with border on front cover enclosing a black stamped floral resign. Lettered in gilt. Re-cased. The binding is a little faded and soiled, but overall in very good condition. Library number in white, and remnant of a contemporary library sticker to the base of each spine. Internally, largely clean and tidy, but with a little darkening to the edges and occasional light foxing. This is an ex-library copy, and although there are not many library marks to the book, there are a few. Namely: Vol. I. Number to half title; discolouration from removed sticker to the verso; small (2cm diameter) circular library stamp to the title page. The end papers in Vol. I. have been replaced from old, contemporary black end-paper stock. Initially Burton had written a report on the Sind and its population in "Reports on Bombay" in around 1849, hence the "revisited" here. Burton intended that this much updated text on India after the mutiny be illustrated with a map and photographs taken on this 1876 journey with Isabel. However, his publisher returned the map and photographs he had sent them, as he considered that the expense would be too great. Half-title to Vol. I., not called for in Vol. II. xii, 343; iv, 331. pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Coleoptera Sanctae-Helenae

London, John van Voorst, 1877. 8vo. xxv, 256 pp., one engraved plate. Publisher&#39;s blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine.* The first monograph on the beetles of Saint Helena in the subtropical South Atlantic. As could be expected from a very isolated island-fauna most species described in this work are endemic and new, and several were new until Thomas Vernon Wollaston, FLS (1822-1878) himself described them in previous, much smaller papers. Nine species are figured. This work is one of a series of eight island faunal studies, the others being on the insects of Madeira (published in 1854), Madeira, Salvages, and Canaries (1865), Cape-Verde Archipelago (1867), the Coleoptera of Madeira in the British Museum (1857), as well as those of the Canaries (1864), on the landshells of the Atlantic islands (1878), and on the variation of species, with especial reference to the insecta (1858). The latter paper in particular is an important contribution to evolution. However, Wollaston, concluded from his researches that species were created under a divine plan to best suit local circumstances. Published in the year previous to Darwin&#39;s "On the origin of species", it was kindly received by Darwin. In turn, Wollaston, who could not shed his religious beliefs, published quite a negative review of Darwin&#39;s work. Thereafter sympathy between both men although they were working on much the same subject deteriorated slowly but steadily. The present work is certainly one of Wollaston&#39;s rarest, market-wise. Uncommon in zoological libraries (with about 25 copies in the World Cat listing), hardly a single copy has been for sale during the last 30 years, and auction records are wanting. Tiny cut in front board edge, the plate a bit foxed, curiously mostly on the figures, otherwise an excellent clean copy. Very rare. Although illustrated not in Nissen ZBI. Hagen II, p. 294-295; Horn-Schenkling II(4)p. 454.

ARABIC ART IN CAIRO (Fine Facsimile 3 Volume Edition)

Giunti. New;. Hardcover. <p>3 volumes (size 480 x 620 mm) bound in buckram and leather with gold stam ping on the front-boards and spines. </p><p>IN 1877 A SERIES of engravings on the subject of the manifold expressions of Arab art that flourished in Cairo from the seventh until the end of the eighteenth century was sent to press by the publishers Ve A. Morel et Cie. Most of these works were created by Prisse d&#39;Avennes (1807-1879) , a distinguished scholar who, with the documentation collected during his many travels in the Middle East, gave a decisive contribution to the knowledge of Arabian, and especially Egyptian, art. </p><p>In the 200 plates presented by the French publishers, D&#39;Avennes depicts palaces, mosques and minarets of the Egyptian capital with expertise and graphic skill (often livening them by the introduction of various figures in compliance with the taste of his time) , dwelling in detail on architectural ornaments, wall decorations and furnishings. Of great interest are also the engravings that reproduce glass panes, fabrics, carpets, armour and the decorations that adorned the pages of the Koran. </p><p>Later the French edition was revised and published by the Khayat Book and Publishing Company of Beirut, and it is in this same version, with all care devoted to its graphic presentation and to the chromatic effect of the illustrations, that D&#39;Avennes&#39; work is reproposed today as precious witness to an art and culture of everlasting fascination. </p><p> </p> .

Message of Elisha P. Ferry, Governor of Washington Territory, to the Legislative Assembly, Session of 1877.

Olympia: C. B. Bagley, Public Printer, 1877. - 8vo., (8 ½ x 5 ¾ inches). Original printed wrappers (a bit toned, lower corner chipped). First edition. An important pamphlet in the history of Washington state and the American West. Ferry served two terms as the Governor of Washington Territory, and later went on to become the Governor of Washington State. From the pamphlet: "No event of an extraordinary character has transpired within our Territory since the adjournment of the last Legislative Assembly. Our people have enjoyed uninterrupted health. Our progress in wealth and population has been as rapid as could have been expected and, under the circumstances, must be regarded as eminently satisfactory. Our isolated position and the great distance to be traveled, and the large expense incurred by immigrants will necessarily operate to retard our advancement until a continuous line of railroad to the Eastern States is secured. Our agricultural, manufacturing and mining industries have been unusually prosperous and, when we contrast our financial condition and business prosperity with that of other localities, we can realize how highly we are favored. Here, the laborer has received remunerative wages; capital has been profitably employed; manufactures have increased; the earth has yielded abundant harvests and all departments of business have been successfully prosecuted; while in other portions of our country wide spread financial trouble, embarrassment and distress have prevailed." Shallow loss to. cloth at upper spine end, lower spine end and corner tips rubbed, a. tight, very good copy. A very scarce book.(#131696). First edition. Title leaf is a cancel and the imprint is evidently fictitious. Title leaf verso records copyright holder as "Elton R. Smilie." Lyle Wright, American Fiction 1876-1900, records the other issue of this book (the DLC copy) with imprint "Cambridge: Printed at the Riverside Press, 1877" (this variant title leaf is also a cancel). Eccentric lost race novel which provides a report of a German expedition exploring the headwaters of the Paraguay River and its tributaries. The expedition finds a vast walled city, "Heraclea," which was founded millennia earlier by ancient Romans and is now populated by their descendants. Living nearby are other races, including tiny people who vary from dwarf to insect size, called collectively the "Manatitlans." These ancient people have long dwelled in harmony near and with the Romans and are described as having evolved from the intestinal parasites of the god Hercules. The book includes some heavy- handed satire of European society and some utopian touches, but its focus is a discussion of "Manatitlan" society (which has existed for 11,000 years), especially its educational system.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        ON HORSEBACK THROUGH ASIA MINOR

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle. Complete 2 volume set bound in original decorated cloth binding. 1877. 3rd edition. hb. Royal 8vo, pp. 352, 399. Boards show some bumping, edge-wear, scuffing & light soiling. conts. clean; overall, g/vg condition. . Frederick Gustavus Burnaby&#39;s account of a five months&#39; horseback ride through Asia Minor, during which he traversed a district extending over 2,000 miles. His observations "of remarks which were made by the Mohammedans about the Christians and by the Armenians about the Turks and Russians..." are both interesting and apropos. Burnaby (1842-1885) was a cavalry officer and inveterate traveller, who was educated at Harrow and in Germany. He became an accomplished linguist and travelled to Central and South America, Spain and Morocco, South Russia, the Sudan and, in 1875, travelled on horseback from Kazala to Khiva. The following year he rode from Scutari into Armenia and thence to Batoum. In 1880, he attached himself to the British Egyptian Expedition, and in 1884 he was killed in action attempting to relieve Khartoum (DNB; also see Nerhood, "To Russia and Return", #322). With oval photographic portrait of the author, mounted as frontispiece to volume I. Three coloured folding maps. 24 page publisher&#39;s catalogue at end of volume I. Period advertising on rear endpapers of both volumes. Bindings of both volumes are a bit stressed, as from the books being opened and pressed flat, but hinges and joints tight, and nothing loose. Small, oval, former owner&#39;s name stamp on front free endpapers of both volumes. No other markings. .

        Coleoptera Sanctae-Helenae.

. London, John van Voorst, 1877. 8vo. xxv, 256 pp., one engraved plate. Publisher's blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine.* The first monograph on the beetles of Saint Helena in the subtropical South Atlantic. Published in the year previous to Darwin's "On the origin of species", it was kindly received by Darwin. In turn, Wollaston, who could not shed his religious beliefs, published quite a negative review of Darwin's work. Thereafter sympathy between both men although they were working on much the same subject deteriorated slowly but steadily. The present work is certainly one of Wollaston's rarest, market-wise. 454..

        A Woman-Hater.

London: William Blackwood: First edition 1877 - 3 volumes, 8vo., ([iv], 280pp.) + ([iv], 285pp.) + ([iv], 282pp.), half-titles to each volume, marbled endpapers and fore-edges, bound in contemporary good quality half calf over marbled boards (by Stevens & Haynes, Temple Bar, London), gilt decorated spines in compartments with floral rolls and thistles, light occasional wear to some extremities. A generally VG+ clean set in a handsome binding. Not recorded in Sadleir or Wolff. Ex Libris Benjamin Bickley Rogers, the renowned English classical scholar, with his finely engraved bookplate to upper pastedown. Charles Reade 1814-1884), was an English novelist and dramatist. Reade began his literary career as a dramatist, and he chose to have "dramatist" stand first in the list of his occupations on his tombstone. In 1861 Reade published what would become his most famous novel, The Cloister and the Hearth. In this work Reade continued his commentary on trade unions while also tackling the topic of women doctors and the insanitary conditions of village life. Few writers of the nineteenth century could contend on the score of wide and eager interest in life with Charles Reade, whose physical and mental vigour animate his pages, sometimes to the point of violence. Reade's novels were popular, and he was among England's highest-paid novelists; however, many libraries refused to carry his works on the grounds that they were indecent. The author George Orwell summed up Reade's attraction as "the same charm as one finds in R. Austin Freeman's detective stories or Lieutenant-Commander Gould's collections of curiosities&#151;the charm of useless knowledge," going on to say that "Reade was a man of what one might call penny-encyclopaedic learning. He possessed vast stocks of disconnected information which a lively narrative gift allowed him to cram into books which would at any rate pass as novels. If you have the sort of mind that takes a pleasure in dates, lists, catalogues, concrete details, descriptions of processes, junk-shop windows and back numbers of the Exchange and Mart, the sort of mind that likes knowing exactly how a medieval catapult worked or just what objects a prison cell of the eighteen-forties contained, then you can hardly help enjoying Reade."
