Pictures of Life and Character in New York

1877. [NEW YORK]. AVERELL, G.W. (lithographer). Pictures of Life and Character in New York. [20] ff., each with full-page lithograph on recto and advertisement on verso. 4to., 303 x 260 mm, bound in original publisher's brick-red cloth, embossed and gilt (somewhat worn), preserved in a black cloth case. New York: Averell, N.D. (advertisements dated 1877). |~||~||~||~||~| Probable First Edition. The New York Historical Society copy bears an advertisement on the rear paste-down for "Cash assets, Jan. 1, 1878" -- the present copy, unsophisticated in the original binding, never had advertisements on the paste-downs; and yet internally there are two different advertisements dated May 1877 -- thus preceding all recorded copies by six months. This is a charming and rare depiction of New York social life and customs in the late nineteenth century. The plates cover a wide range of subjects, including Fulton Ferry, Castle Garden, Jewish tailors and life on Chatham Street, a boarding house on Seventh Avenue, an opium den in Chinatown, horse racing, a walk in Central Park, unsavory characters, beggars, and street vendors throughout the city, and more. The advertisements offer similar documentation of city life during the 1870s, with goods and services such as tobacco, music boxes, optical instruments, suspenders, pianos, carriages, varnishes, hair tonic, printing materials, kid gloves, steam boat voyages, perfumery, champagne, chocolate, billiard tables, relief from sea-sickness, and much more. Traces of damp throughout, first blank torn along gutter margin, but an excellent, unsophisticated copy in original condition.

Cartas á la dona. Noticias exactas detalladas de la Exposició universal de Filadelfia en 1876 y d'un viatxe pels Estats-Units

Nova-York [New-York]: Estampa de John Smith 4to. 285 pp., illus.. 1877 The first book printed in Catalan in the United States" (according to the title-page) => but really printed in Barcelona. Arus (1845?-91), a Catalan playwright and writer for newspapers and other periodical publications, acted here on a request from Arturo Cuyas, the compiler of a highly successful 1876 Spanish-English dictionary that is still in print and the editor of the first Catalan magazine in the United States, La Llumanera (1874?-81), a weekly that dealt with everything except politics. Cuyas wanted Arus to supply a "chronicle" of the Philadelphia International Exposition for publication in his magazine, and had J. Garriga, a representative of La Llumanera, send him writings and documents, content and detail, that Arus, who himself never visited the Exhibition, then transformed into a series of 13 "letters" in verse form addressed to Cuyas and signed "Pau Pi y Pla." From their basis in simple "noticias" of the United States, of Philadelphia in particular, and most especially of the wonders of the Centennial Exhibition, the letters => flower into a social and literary study of customs, satirically comparing the those of United States with those of Catalonia. Following several introductory sections, each page of text of the letters is printed within one of a number of => illustrated wood-engraved borders, and each carta is illustrated with one or more comic cut(s), roughly one-third-page in height, highlighting points in the text. The title-page statement that "illustrat ab preciosos dibuixos dels primers artistas catalans" is borne out by the list on pp. 9 and 10 of the => some 70 illustrators who supplied the wood-engraved illustrations and borders. The title-page labels this "Tomo I" but the second volume never appeared. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate => only three U.S. libraries reporting ownership. Late 19th-century quarter red leather with red textured paper sides, round spine with modest gilt tooling and lettering; boards rubbed. Text variably foxed as are the copies with condition statements in the few Spanish library OPACs reporting ownership. From a disparate variety of points of view, a volume => fascinating to contemplate.

        Coleoptera Sanctae-Helenae.

      - London, John van Voorst, 1877. 8vo. xxv, 256 pp., one engraved plate. Publisher's blind-stamped cloth with gilt title on the spine.l The first monograph on the beetles of Saint Helena in the subtropical South Atlantic. As could be expected from a very isolated island-fauna most species described in this work are endemic and new, and several were new until Thomas Vernon Wollaston, FLS (1822-1878) himself described them in previous, much smaller papers. Nine species are figured. This work is one of a series of eight island faunal studies, the others being on the insects of Madeira (published in 1854), Madeira, Salvages, and Canaries (1865), Cape-Verde Archipelago (1867), the Coleoptera of Madeira in the British Museum (1857), as well as those of the Canaries (1864), on the landshells of the Atlantic islands (1878), and on the variation of species, with especial reference to the insecta (1858). The latter paper in particular is an important contribution to evolution. However, Wollaston, concluded from his researches that species were created under a divine plan to best suit local circumstances. Published in the year previous to Darwin's "On the origin of species", it was kindly received by Darwin. In turn, Wollaston, who could not shed his religious beliefs, published quite a negative review of Darwin's work. Thereafter sympathy between both men although they were working on much the same subject deteriorated slowly but steadily. The present work is certainly one of Wollaston's rarest, market-wise. Uncommon in zoological libraries (with about 25 copies in the World Cat listing), hardly a single copy has been for sale during the last 30 years, and auction records are wanting. Tiny cut in front board edge, the plate a bit foxed, curiously mostly on the figures, otherwise an excellent clean copy. Very rare. Although illustrated not in Nissen ZBI. Hagen II, p. 294-295; Horn-Schenkling II(4)p. 454. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Because the original publishers failed to copyright the novel, its author neither received royalties nor kept control of the text. "The novel's action takes place just before the fall of New France, when the supporters of the popular Chien d'Or trading house, headed by the bourgeois Philibert, struggle against the decadent and corrupt Grand Company of the Intendant BIGOT. Two ill-fated romances are interwoven: that of Amélie de Repentigny with Philibert's son, Pierre; and that of Le Gardeur (Amélie's brother) with the self-seeking Angélique des Meloises, who eventually persuades him to kill Philibert. This action precipitates the collapse of the colony. The novel mixes Gothic and historical romance with Québecois history and legend; it also provides insight into 19th-century English Canadian perceptions of French Canada's past." from the Canadian Encyclopedia.       London: John Murray, , 1877. 2 volumes bound as one, octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to spine, gilt panelling to upper board, all edges gilt. Tinted engraved frontispiece to each, and 6 other similar plates in all, folding map. First edition. "In 1873 Major de Cosson, after wintering in Egypt, started for Suakin with his brother, the intention of the travellers being to seek for sport in the country described in Sir Samuel Baker's 'Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia', but meeting on the way with General Kirkham, of the Abyssinian Army, who was returning with a letter from Queen Victoria to King John of Abyssinia, they decided on visiting that monarch and his country. They visited Adowa, Gondar, and Lake Tana, near which they found King John established with his army" (RGS obituary). In an audience, de Cosson obtained a written promise from King John that he would endeavour to stop the slave trade in the country. Recalled to duty, he rode "with one Egyptian servant to Khartoum, and thence across the desert to Suakin, enduring considerable hardships on the way." He subsequently advised on the route of the Gordon Relief Expedition, and served at Tofrek "where his horse was shot under him." Czech notes that vol. I, "primarily dwells on their journey," but that vol. II contains accounts of the brothers' time at Lake Tana where they "enjoyed considerable sport after hippopotamus, with additional hunts after leopard, lion, and Gazelle.
